How to fund your tertiary studies

The #Feesmustfall movement garnered a lot of publicity in recent months. While some inroads have been made, students still have to pay for tertiary education. Private banker and professional speaker Samke Mhlongo-Ngwenya says that while securing sufficient funding may be difficult, there are options you could consider.

Funding option 1: Company scholarship

For a long time, company scholarships have been the go-to tertiary funding option for many disadvantaged South Africans, especially during the apartheid era. One of the benefits of this option is that company scholarships usually have a work-back period, which provides guaranteed employment upon the completion of your studies.

"Sadly this option has become more difficult to secure due to increased competition as there are more matriculants qualifying for university entrance," says Mhlongo-Ngwenya. "In addition, there tend to be more scholarships available in fields such as accounting and engineering, for instance, and less in the humanities."

Funding option 2: Take a gap year and save

A working gap year, whether in South Africa or abroad, allows you to earn some money that can be directed towards funding your tertiary education. Furthermore, additional work experience may be an added advantage when competing for job opportunities later.

The downside is that students who opt to take a gap year will be a year or two older than other graduates upon completion of their studies. However, this is becoming less of an issue for potential employers. Another restriction to consider is that it is unlikely that you can generate enough money in 12 to 24 months to fully fund a diploma or degree, but saving money while working before going to university will ease the financial burden.

Funding option 3: Take out a student loan

A student loan is a reasonably accessible funding option but it comes with the burden of debt.

"Many student loans are only repayable after the student has spent a minimum period in employment, which gives the false illusion that they are easily manageable," says Mhlongo-Ngwenya. "Not many people realise that interest on the student loan accrues from the day in which the funds are dispersed, thus ballooning the total repayable figure relative to the initial loan amount."

She says that the advantage of this option is that it affords many more people the opportunity to fund their tertiary education, thus improving their employment prospects.

Funding option 4: Work full time and study part time

Many students in developed economies choose to work straight after high school in order to fund their tertiary studies. This suggestion may not be easily implementable in South Africa where we are facing an estimated 27% national unemployment rate and over 50% youth unemployment rate.

However, if it is possible to secure employment that generates enough income to fund your tertiary education, there are two main benefits: You will not have a huge debt balance at the onset of your working career and you will have years of work experience that other graduates may not, thus adding to your marketability.

Warning of heatwave in Gauteng and tips to stay cool

South Africans are urged to brace themselves today as the South African Weather Service sent out warnings of a heatwave.

It's going to get hotter in Gauteng from today until Friday with temperatures reaching 34 degrees Celsius in Johannesburg today.

The Department of Water and Sanitation is still urging South Africans to use water sparingly and save as the drought in the country continues.

The heatwave comes despite heavy rainfalls that caused floods and damaged infrastructure and people's property.

According to The Department of Water and Sanitation, heavy rainfalls have improved South Africa's water levels. However, there is still a call for South Africans to save water.

Russel Meiring, spokesperson at emergency services ER24, says South Africans should follow the following tips to deal with the heatwave:

Stay out of the midday sun. Heatwaves are generally at their highest between 11 am -2 pm.

Wear a hat and high SPF sunscreen.

Stay hydrated by drinking water and cool liquids but stay clear of energy drinks that have caffeine, as caffeine makes you urinate and lose water.

If you feel overwhelmed by the heat, move yourself to a cool area out of the sun and possibly next to an air conditioner.

If you are in need of medical help please call 084 124 for ER24's emergency assistance.

The experience gained from it will come to good use as I prepare to address the African Studies Association's Annual Meeting - the largest gathering of African scholars and professionals. Wayde on top of the sporting world

Olympic medallist Wayde van Niekerk became the first athlete to win the SA Sports Star of the Year awards back to back after he scooped yet another accolade in as many months in Bloemfontein last night.

The awards have kept pouring in for Van Niekerk ever since he made Olympic history in August.

The sprint sensation was honoured at home last night, reigning supreme at the 11th South African Sports Awards.

Like last year, Van Niekerk won the sportsman of the year award and was also honoured with the best Olympic athlete award.

But the night didn't only belong to Van Niekerk, as 800m runner Caster Semenya also ascended the podium to claim the sportswoman of the year award.

Semenya, who fought the odds to win gold at the Olympics, was also nominated for the main award, along with Van Niekerk and Proteas cricket star Kagiso Rabada.

But it was Van Niekerk's record-breaking feat at the Rio Olympics which seemingly proved the difference.

The 24-year-old sprinter pulled off one of the most amazing pieces of Olympic history as he clocked 43.03 to win the 400m race, breaking the 43.18 record set by American sprinter Michael Johnson 17 years ago.

He has already raked in two international awards for his Olympic exploits and his achievements at the African Championships.

Ilse Hayes won the sportswoman of the year with disability award after she ran a season best to win gold at the Paralympics while Charl du Toit won the sportsman of the year with disability for his Olympics exploits.

Ntando Mahlangu pipped Henri Schoeman and Brad Binder for the newcomer of the year award – just reward for the 14 year old's silver medal in the 200m at the Paralympics.

The team of the year award went to Mamelodi Sundowns mainly for their league championship and the League Cup. But it may well have been for their CAF Champions League success.

However, the coach of the year award went to Anna Botha and not Pitso Mosimane. Botha guided Van Niekerk to Olympic glory.

Very few athletes can quite capture the imagination of Jamaican sprint king Usain Bolt.

But that's exactly what Van Niekerk did as he also left many around the world in awe.

Yet there can no fitting and greater honour than national recognition.

South Africa must focus on climate change

As the impact of climate change is becoming more evident, environmentalists have urged South Africa to work harder in fighting against climate change.

The appeal comes as the countries including South Africa wrapped up the Climate Change International Conference (COP22) in Morocco.

WWF South Africa’s climate change programme manager, Jaco du Toit, said that focusing on renewable energy was critical.

“During the meetings in Marrakech, 50 countries in the Climate Vulnerable Forum pledged to achieve 100% renewable energy between 2030 and 2050. Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Rwanda and Madagascar and several other African states are included.

“The Africa Renewable Energy initiative also reported strong progress on setting up the infrastructure to deliver on its target of 300GW of new renewable energy by 2030,” he said.

He said that South Africa which had been negatively impacted by the ongoing drought should follow in the foot steps of other African countries.

“Any further expansion of carbon intensive infrastructure will make it impossible for South Africa to realise its international commitments and to do its part in keeping warming below 1.5°C – especially considering that average temperatures during 2016 are already projected to be 1.2°C above pre-industrial levels,” he said.

July this year was recorded as the hottest month on record since records commenced in 1880.

It is also predicated that 2016 is set to be the hottest year on record.

He also spoke of a need to ensure finances were available for climate change projects.

“With another series of negotiations on African soil wrapped up it is becoming ever more urgent to scale up climate finance, particularly support for those already bearing climate change impacts.

“Progress on the national adaptation strategy must be maintained,” he said.

Rapper Mos Def apologises to SA Government

American rapper Mos Def (real name Dante Smith Bey) will be leaving South Africa on Tuesday night after he apologised to the South African government for contravening the South African Passports and Travel Documents Act.

According to South Africa’s immigration laws, foreigners entering and departing from South Africa require a valid passport. Def, however, was arrested when he attempted to leave South Africa in January with a document called a “World Passport” which SA does not recognise as a valid passport.

Speaking at a press briefing, Director General at Home Affairs Mkuseli Apeni, said he has accepted Smith Bey’s apology and will grant him the opportunity to leave the country tonight, without further action taken against him.

“Mr Smith Bey has unreservedly apologised to the Government of South Africa and more particularly to the Department of Home Affairs for his actions and for any inconvenience or prejudice this may have caused,” Apeni said.

“The department is satisfied with the apology, and has agreed in principle for him to depart from South Africa on Tuesday using a valid passport.”

Apeni says the rapper will no longer be granted access to South Africa in the future as he has been declared an “undesirable person”. However, the Department of Home Affairs says he is welcome to apply for a waiver should he be returning to the country for a good cause.

Excitement builds for South African Sports Awards

Excitement is building for the South African Sports Awards at the Sand du Plessis Theatre in Bloemfontein on Sunday.

The 11th edition of the awards will be held in the City of Roses for the second consecutive year after a successful event last year.

All eyes will be on the world 400m, Olympic 400m champion and world record holder Wayde van Niekerk, who is expected to dominate the awards for the second year running.

The 24-year-old Bloemfontein-based athlete is a big favourite to sweep all before him after he was nominated in three categories, sports star of the year, sportsman of the year and people’s choice award.

General opinion suggests the fact that the Cape Town born sprinter has won three major titles this season gives him an edge over other nominees.

Van Niekerk was recently voted best male athlete from the Rio Olympics by the Association of National Olympic Committees and is also in line to scoop IAAF’s male athlete of the year award.

Many reckon even though Van Niekerk faces stiff competition from 800m Olympic gold medallist Caster Semenya and Proteas fast bowler Kagiso Rabada in the sports Star of the year category, he is seen as an overwhelming favourite to be the star of the night.

Semenya and Rabada are, however, expected to push him all the way for the people’s choice award.

Van Niekerk was the big winner last year when he walked away with R1m and a new car. Earlier this year he received a hero’s welcome in Bloemfontein upon his return from Rio.

Sports, arts, culture and recreation MEC Mathabo Leeto said the city is ready to host the glittering event and this year’s event will be bigger and better.

A total of 18 categories will be contested which includes the sportsman of the year, sportsman of the year with a disability, sportswoman of the year, sportswoman of the year with a disability and team of the year, among others.

Six Paralympic athletes are in contention for the sportsman of the year with a disability and sportswoman of the year with a disability while CAF Champions League winners Mamelodi Sundowns are expected to be named the team of the year.

South Africa’s sporting public are also able to be involved by voting in the people’s choice of the year award.

Why your cooldrink bottle isnt trash

Mpact Recycling has called upon consumers to take greater care when disposing of their refuse. “We urge consumers to separate recyclable plastic bottles and other recyclable items at home instead of relying on recyclers to do so at landfill. By that time the plastic is often too contaminated with items like soil to be recycled,” says Ronald Fairbanks, General Manager: Mpact Polymers.

Considerable progress has been made to increase the recycled portion of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) in the manufacturing of new plastic bottles. An increase in the percentage of Recycled PET (rPET) bottles is conditional upon two things: improving the industry’s capacity to recycle (which has been achieved by Mpact Polymers PET recycling operation); and by improving the quality of PET being processed in the operation. By consumers ideally separating recyclables at source, they can ensure that the bottles don’t end up in landfills as part of the municipal waste collection process which ultimately prevents them from becoming too contaminated to be recycled.

With the formal sector’s increased investment into new recycling capacity, Mpact Polymers operation accounts for 85 direct jobs and indirectly, an anticipated 1,000 additional jobs are expected to be created within the recycling industry. This would be as a result of a greater demand for collectors, small businesses and buy-back centres.

In its latest results for 2015, PETCO (the PET Recycling body) reports that the organisation recycled an additional 15% of post-consumer bottles in comparison to the previous year and that the total PET market grew by 8.5% to 210 000 tonnes. The 1.7 billion PET bottles that were collected across South Africa in 2015, which equates to approximately 4.7 million bottles collected each and every day, sustained over 50 000 income opportunities. An annual PET recycling rate of 52% of post-consumer bottle PET was achieved and, for the first time, PETCO recycled more bottles than those going into landfills. The goal is to reach 170,000 tonnes by 2022 and the industry is on track to achieve this.

“Notwithstanding the positive improvement, we could be doing considerably better if we were to receive a higher quality of PET material. Consumers need to be educated that their cool drink bottles are not trash, but a livelihood for many, and an essential raw material to improving sustainable plastic manufacturing. Mpact encourages consumers to support recycling wherever possible. Doing your bit at home can make all the difference to job creation and protecting the environment,” says Fairbanks.

Consumers need to learn to separate waste in the home. In the case of PET, this requires ensuring that recyclable plastic is kept separate from other waste and either delivered to recycling centres or left out for collectors to take away separately from municipal waste,” concludes Fairbanks.

Minimum wage is important

Chairman of the Minimum Wage Panel set up by Cyril Ramaphosa, Imraan Valodia, said the new target proposed on Sunday, would have a dramatic effect in the lives of many South Africans.

Ramaphosa revealed that the Minimum Wage target for South Africa would be R3500 a month or R20 per hour, going forward. Valodia said it was a figure that was not easily reached, following a series of robust debates among members of the panel.

However, he also explained that the overwhelming evidence pointed to a figure that would change the lives of about 40 percent of working South Africans.

"They (the proposals) come from an exhaustive process, where we looked at all of the research being done in this field. We have thought really hard for about three months," Valodia told journalists.

"We have had many heated debates among the panel, we have looked at all the options and we have come to the view that the minimum wage for South Africa, to start with, should be set at a rate of R20 per hour. Depending on how many hours you work, that comes out in the region of about R3500 per month," added the panel chair.

"We have looked at what the impact of this Minimum Wage would be and there is really three types of evidence that has been put before us," he said.

The first is micro economic evidence, which looks at patterns of wages and levels of poverty in South Africa.

"I think this body of evidence highlights the enormous importance of us having a minimum wage. One statistic to share with you is that taking our proposal of R3500, it is quite striking that something around 40 percent of South Africans who do have work, who do go to work every day earn a wage below R3500," added Valodia.

He said that in that context, the impact of the minimum wage would be quite important in that it will change the lives of a significant portion of the population. He said this would go some way to addressing inequality in South Africa and providing an economic boost.

"We are not the only ones to do this. Through this we join a large community in the world where this has been done successfully."

How to draw up a solid business plan

Question:

My friend and I would like to open a catering business, but we don't know how to write a professional business plan and we don't have funds to start the business. What can we do?

Joshua Maluleke answers:

As Benjamin Franklin put it: "If you fail to plan, you're planning to fail." There are many formats you can use when writing a business plan, but there are five main areas that the plan should cover:

*Your core business

*The marketing plan

*The operations plan

* The staffing plan

*The financial plan

There are many institutions in the country that assist aspirant entrepreneurs with writing business plans. Because they provide free, good-quality advice, I recommend the Small Enterprise Development Agency (www.seda.org.za) and the SME Toolkit South Africa (www.southafrica.smetoolkit.org/sa/en).

If done properly, financial planning will enable you to identify ways of raising start-up funds for your business. There is no rule of thumb for raising funds, but the most logical way to do it is to search your own pockets first. This will help you avoid any interest that you're likely pay should you get loans or funding from external parties. If the combined contributions of your money and that of your friend are not sufficient to cover your start-up financial requirements, then I'd advise you to approach family members and friends, as they will likely charge you minimal or no interest on loaning you start-up capital. If it's still inadequate, then you may approach financial institutions – armed with the business plan that you would have already prepared.

China takes lead in #Smartphone growth

Chinese manufacturers are driving growth in the smartphone market as sector leaders Samsung and Apple sputter, a survey showed Thursday.

The survey by Gartner Inc. showed that in the third quarter, three Chinese vendors — Huawei, Oppo and BBK Communication Equipment — together accounted for 21 percent of the smartphones sold worldwide, and were the only vendors in the top five to increase sales.

"Sales of smartphones in China grew by 12.4 percent, and the vendors who most successfully exploited the sales opportunities there were Oppo and BBK," said Gartner analyst Anshul Gupta.

"In Oppo's case, 81 percent of its smartphone sales came from China, while BBK accounted for 89 percent of smartphones sales in China. These two vendors also grew strongly in India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Russia."

Gartner's survey confirmed other reports showing Samsung and Apple at the top of the global market but with slipping sales.

The research firm said Samsung's market share dropped to 19.2 percent amid the fiasco over its Galaxy Note 7 smartphones, which were recalled and then halted after overheating batteries leading to fires.

"The decision to withdraw the Galaxy Note 7 was correct, but the damage to Samsung's brand will make it harder for the company to increase its smartphone sales in the short term," said Gupta.

"For Samsung, it's crucial that the Galaxy S8 launches successfully, so that partners and customers regain trust in its brand."

Apple's share dropped to 11.5 percent as the iPhone maker failed to get much benefit from Samsung's woes, Gartner said.

"The withdrawal of Samsung's Galaxy Note 7 may benefit sales of Apple's iPhone 7 Plus only slightly, as Note 7 users are likely to stay with Samsung or at least with Android," said Gartner's Roberta Cozza.

"To some extent, other Android vendors could capitalize on this situation in the short term for example, Huawei and other Chinese brands present in the premium Android phone segment."

Cozza said the Samsung problems could also benefit Google, which recently introduced its Pixel and Pixel XL devices.

Gartner said overall smartphone sales in the quarter rose 5.4 percent to 373 million units.

Adopt a child this festive season #ChristmasWishes

Where Rainbows Meet, a constructive non-profit organisation in Vrygrond Cape Town, South Africa has started a crowdfunding campaign through Jumpstarter South Africa to help the impoverished children of the community this Christmas.

Starting this November, the locally founded non-profit organisation Where Rainbows Meet has begun their annual Adopt a Child for Christmas Campaign, focusing on providing some of the world's most victimized children with a real Christmas. The organisation would like to raise over ZAR 20,000.00 to fund the campaign this Christmas season. This event not only provides basic necessities to the children of the community, but also shows them that they are not forgotten, unloved, or condemned to a life of poverty. More than often, children in the community face abuse and neglect from their parents and extreme violence into their adult years.

The campaign was first attempted in 2014 and was a resounding success with the project raising over ZAR 100,000.00, over 10 times the fundraising goal of ZAR 10,000.00. This success allowed the organization to provide not only food, clothes, and medicine to over 2,500 children, but also toys, hygiene materials, education materials, and even a safe and fun community event for the people to enjoy. Last year we were able to match the amount raised the previous year and this year, Where Rainbows Meet hopes to surpass last year with a bigger impact through this campaign in order to give back to its community in a unique fashion.

The very active nature of the organization paired with its very real presence in the hearts and minds of the local community means that every donation will make a real difference in the lives of these children and will not be just another drop in the bucket.

"It really amazes me to see people from all over the world willing to contribute towards this campaign! It's definitely a good cause and I'm very excited to see how much we'll be able to give these kids." said Prianka Daud, an international volunteer from the United States.

Since 2008, Where Rainbows Meet has offered a wide variety of programmes to provide education, food, a legal outlet for crimes committed against members of its community, and a place to provide loving care to local children who are abused, neglected, and/or abandoned. Programmes for all members of the community include: Early Childhood Development, Youth Development, nutrition, computer and life skills training, organic gardening, and the Siyazenzela beading and sewing center.

Everyone is welcome to attend the events on December 15th and 16th 2016.

So just what is a #DJ

One of the coolest professions in the industry, the DJs are the biggest life-savors of any party. On the other side, the DJs hold the biggest responsibility for making or breaking your event, We look at it as the DJ is the Pilot of the plane and must navigate everyone on board to a great destination, a fun ride and good time. Based on different kinds of celebrations, sometimes you need different types of DJs like Sweet 16 DJ bar & Bat Mitzvah DJ, Wedding DJs, and others. It is an interesting thing to become a Disc Jockey, and the best part the profession can be pursued by both males and females. Here are things that you will need if you wish to become a DJ: Here's a significance of what you have to win and figure out how to end up an awesome DJ.

Personality and Knowledge Needed

Being a DJ requires two things from your identity – the capacity and simplicity of mixing and act of spontaneity. As it were, being the DJ for a party you have to advance a steady situation of enjoyment, paying little heed to the group or the place. You have to comprehend that group, read body language, age and nationalities, so you have to take in the stream of the masses to adjust and play the sort of music that will have individuals snared to your style constantly.

Extra Duties

A decent DJ will dependably educate the group about what's happening outside the room. Keep yourself redesigned on movement reports to tell the general population on the off chance that they can take a superior course when they head home. Fuse the crowd into your set, connect with them and take two or three demands every once in awhile. In some cases, great behavior function as fine just like a renegade DJ as well!

Being a DJ is undoubtedly an intense calling. In the event that you don't love your occupation like it's justified regardless of your life, then I propose you find anothercareer as it's a passion not a job. For the rest, the message is clear. There is an entire world past that, simply sitting tight for you and your style, however the question stays to whether you have what it takes.

Hate your job? Here is how to love it!

Like any other aspect of life, there will be good days and bad days at work. On some days, the passion will shine through and everything will flow work-wise. And exactly the opposite will happen on other days.

Change Partners Psychologist and Executive Coach Lindiwe Mkhondo says when the bad days start outnumbering the good ones, perhaps it's time to re-evaluate your job.

"It's normal at some point in your career to feel uninspired and stuck in a rut. While it's easy to place blame on your workload, colleagues or environment, very often these reasons for your dissatisfaction come from within you," she says.

Mkhondo adds that by taking action and making use of small introspective steps, you can make a real difference in your career. "Don't settle for mediocracy in your job. If you aren't happy, it's important to believe that you are capable of bringing your desires to fruition. Remember that small steps, done consistently will get you where you want to be. Plant seeds of positive attitude and affirm yourself."

Explore your purpose

Envision your happiest self. What do you look like? What kind of work are you doing? Where are you working? And how does this make you feel?

Once you have determined what would make you happiest, analyse what you need to do in order to achieve it. Write down a list of steps you can implement, as well as a deadline for each step, to move you closer to your goals. Also analyse how your current job fits into the bigger picture. A defined purpose will give you the motivation to work towards something as opposed to coasting along.

Clarify your values

Let your values guide your decisions and your priorities. Commit to living each day as a testament to what you have declared to be most important in your life. Make sure your work aligns to these values and you'll be more driven at the workplace.

Challenge yourself

Feeling uninspired is often linked to boredom. If you feel as if you have plateaued or are no longer being challenged, aim to take action and get out of your comfort zone.

Learn more about your industry by attending suitable networking events or seminars, reading journals and sector publications, or furthering your studies. You could also further your career by improving other skills such as public speaking, business writing or management skills. Choose a skill that you haven't mastered and strive to improve it. Try to change habits, attitudes and behaviours that limit your full potential.

Take on more responsibility

Inform your line manager that you would like to diversify your skill set or take on more responsibility. Also offer to help your colleagues out where suitable. Not only will you stand to learn new skills, but this will also show management that you have a positive and willing attitude.

Empower others

You may have reached your ceiling within your company, but you stand to achieve great fulfilment by sharing your knowledge and empowering others. Take the time to assist those who are new or less experienced or offer to become a mentor.

Twitter improves features to report and prevent online abuse

On November 15, Twitter announced via the company's blog that considerable improvements have been made to the platform to enable users to prevent and be protected from online abuse.

The social media platform has unveiled some significant updates to its abuse policy. Once the changes have rolled out, anyone — not just the victim — can report abuse, defined by Twitter as "specific conduct that targets people on the basis of race, ethnicity, national origin, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, religious affiliation, age, disability, or disease." Behavior that breaches these guidelines will also be easier to report.

Twitter users will also see an expanded "mute" feature, where they will be able to moderate notifications received for certain words, phrases, usernames, emojis or hashtags.

David Beckham won't venture into management

Former Manchester United, Real Madrid, AC Milan, PSG and LA Galaxy star David Beckham was in Johannesburg on Monday to speak at the 2016 Discovery Leadership Summit in Sandton.

Beckham, celebrated globally as one of the most marketable footballers ever, told Mzansi's next generation of young footballers and future leaders that he will not venture into management.

"I've worked with great people and great brands and that's led me to wanting different things. It's great to go on the TV and talk about the game we all love and that I've loved for so many years. But I felt that there were other things that I actually wanted to do and to achieve," said Beckham.

"Over the years I've been part of many different companies and many different sponsors. Five years ago I sat down with my management team and told them that I wanted to build a brand and to build companies. I have to go into things that I'm passionate about. I was passionate about playing the game but I'm not passionate about being a manager.

"Management is not something I feel I will be great at."

President Zuma accepts #SABC Board resignations

President Jacob Zuma has accepted the resignation of two more SABC board members.

"President Jacob Zuma has received and accepted the resignations of Ms Vuyo Mhlakaza and Dr Aaron Tshidzumba as members of the board of the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), with immediate effect," the presidency said in a statement.

"The president has thanked the two former board members for their contribution during their tenure at the SABC and wished them well in all their future endeavours."This means that the chairperson, Mbulaheni Maguvhe, is the only non-executive member.

The board needs nine members to form a quorum.

This comes as Parliament's ad hoc committee set up to look into the SABC board meets for the first time on Tuesday to discuss if the board is still fit to do its job.

The ad hoc committee was appointed by the National Assembly. It has until January to decide on the board's future.

Three board members resigned after former chief operations officer Hlaudi Motsoeneng was reinstated in a senior management role in September.

On October 5 SABC board members Krish Naidoo and Vusi Mavuso announced their resignations at a meeting with Parliament's communications committee.

Maguvhe has said he will not step down from his position, despite the inquiry, the SABC reported.

A Donald Trump presidency - Africa responds

The victory of Donald J Trump as the 45th President of the United States of America has been dubbed 'the biggest political upset in modern history', leaving both international experts and global markets reeling.

The US is a significant trade, investment and development partner for Africa. In a recent poll, 83% of participants were convinced the outcome of the US elections would have an impact on Africa.

For this reason, SAIIA asked leading partners across Africa for their views on US priorities for Africa under the new administration. The responses have been published in a new feature, 'A Trump Presidency: Africa Responds.' Some excerpts are included below:

"With Trump's clear opposition to free trade, US alliances and foreign aid, some US engagements in Africa may be adversely affected. This lack of interest in supporting foreign projects and programmes is likely to be extended to US support to Africa's health and education sectors." ~ Chukwuka Onyekwena, Executive Director, Centre for the Study of Economics of Africa, Nigeria

"Trump's greatest impact will be on global efforts to combat climate change. The UN's Paris Agreement on Climate Change will be severely compromised without US support (including financial), and without US national policy to stem carbon emissions." ~ Anton du Plessis, Executive Director, Institute for Security Studies.

Want to be part of the dynamic Ferguson Films?

Ferguson Films has also introduced us to a number of new actors such as the likes of Kamo Modisakeng who acts as "Bassie" on Rockville and many more.

"People need to pester their agents because the bottom line is that we send out briefs to agents, we don't have one on one contact with actors.

We do get a lot of actors sending through their C.V's and their profiles but it's difficult to try and contact and negotiate with an actor, directly and an actor that you've never worked with before so it's easier to just go via agents.

So again, we send out briefs and what we get from agents is what we work with. Actors really need to work closely with their agents and ask them, 'What's happening? I need work, What's happening with Ferguson Films? Are there any briefs coming in?

So actors really need to be more pro-active when it comes to working with their agents." Said Connie.

Donald Trump vows to do 'great job' as President #election2016

Donald Trump has claimed victory before a crowd of cheering supporters at his New York headquarters, calling on Americans to "come together as one united people" and congratulating Hillary Clinton on a hard-fought battle.

Trump made a lot of promises relating to immigration, law and order, health and the economy during the election campaign.

The triumph for Mr. Trump, 70, a real estate developer-turned-reality television star with no government experience, was a powerful rejection of the establishment forces that had assembled against him, from the world of business to government, and the consensus they had forged on everything from trade to immigration.

#FNB Life customers to earn up to 15% in eBucks

As of November, FNB Life customers who have a Life Cover policy can now earn up to 15% of their monthly premiums back in eBucks and collect 1,000 eBucks reward level points each month.

FNB is the first life insurer in South Africa to offer a monthly rewards back benefit on its premiums as part of an integrated bank rewards program.

The percentage of Life Cover premiums paid back in eBucks will be calculated on the customer's total monthly premiums and their eBucks reward level. Additionally, FNB Premier, Private Clients, Private Wealth and RMB Private Bank eBucks members will also be able to collect 1,000 reward level points each month for all of the Life Cover policies that they hold.

Lee Bromfield, CEO of FNB Life says "Our innovative approach and continuous effort to improve customer experience has led us to be the first life insurer to offer a rewards back benefit on premiums monthly, in this way. Unlike other life insurance rewards schemes, FNB Life rewards are based on the same behaviour that customers currently use to earn eBucks, making it simpler for them to engage and earn.

Following the expansion of our comprehensive Life Cover product range that now takes care of death, disability and critical illness risks, up to R100 million, R50 million and R5 million respectively, we found it fitting to leverage FNB's existing eBucks Rewards programme to give more value to policy holders."

"We've spent a great deal of time studying market and consumer trends, and firmly believe that our expanded comprehensive Life Cover product range and rewards offering brings a new dimension into the life insurance space," adds Bromfield.

For customers who hold more than one qualifying policy that offers premiums back in eBucks, the percentage of premiums earned back will be calculated on the sum total of their respective policy premiums.

Premiums earned back in eBucks will depend on customers' eBucks rewards levels. For example, customers on reward level 1 will earn 1% back in eBucks; reward level 2 - 2.5%; reward level 3 – 5%; reward level 4 – 7.5% and reward level 5 – 15%.

In order to qualify, customers must be qualifying eBucks members and up to date with their monthly premium payments - made from their FNB Cheque or RMB Private Bank Account. Only the individual who pays the premiums will earn eBucks.

"eBucks Rewards is an integral part of the FNB ecosystem and brand value, and it was important to offer rewards on the back of our life insurance products," says Bromfield.

"Under the current economic conditions, consumers want to ensure that every cent counts, but still demand maximum value. This is why we have clearly defined the value-aspects of our offering while still retaining competitive pricing and industry-leading flexibility," he concludes.

All eyes on Trump and Clinton #election2016

White House rivals Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump were still flailing for a knockout blow Monday as a presidential race that has cast a pall over US democracy neared its end.

With one day of campaigning left, both sides had packed schedules in the swing states that will decide whether the Democrat can convert her slim opinion poll lead into final victory.

Trump, a populist tycoon who co-opted the Republican Party and created a raucous, nativist grassroots movement in his own image, was still campaigning at midnight Sunday.

Branding 69-year-old Clinton the "most corrupt candidate ever to seek the office of the presidency," he urged supporters to "deliver justice at the ballot box on November 8."

Clinton, the former secretary of state running to become America's first female president, had events planned through midnight Monday to take her into polling day itself.

The Democrat spent the last eight days of campaigning under a renewed FBI inquiry into whether she had exposed US secrets by using a private email server at the State Department.

That burden was finally lifted on Sunday, when the FBI confirmed it would not seek criminal charges, but at the cost of another cycle of headlines about an issue that has hurt her.

She tried to end Sunday's round of rallies on a note of optimism about the United States, albeit couched as a warning that her supporters need to rise to counter the Trump threat.

"I really want each and every one of us to think for a moment about how we would feel on November 9, if we were not successful," she said in Manchester, New Hampshire

"When your kids and grandkids ask you what you did in 2016, when everything was on the line, I hope you'll be able to say you voted for a better, stronger, fairer America."

The world has looked on agog during the campaign, as Trump's once mocked reality television shtick became a plausible vehicle for victory in a divided and suspicious country.

World markets were rocked last month when the renewed FBI probe threated to sink Clinton's chances, and Asian exchanges opened higher after that threat was lifted.

But Trump came back fighting, and experts said the renewed scandal had already damaged the Democratic former first lady's chance of succeeding President Barack Obama.

Clinton's lead dropped from 5.7 to 2.9 percentage points in the week since the scandal returned, according to influential data journalist Nate Silver of FiveThirtyEight.com.

Trump is predicting a ballot upset on a par with Britain's shock vote this year to quit the European Union, or what on Sunday he called: "Brexit plus, plus, plus."

Clinton has booked a star-studded roster of supporters — headlined by President Barack Obama and rock star Bruce Springsteen — for her final events on Monday.

But Trump is also touring key swing states and was determined not to let Clinton off the hook over her email, a symbol for his supporters of the corruption of the Washington elite.

– 'Rigged system' –

"The rank and file special agents of the FBI won't let her get away with her terrible crimes," Trump told a rally in Michigan, a state won comfortably by Obama in 2012.

"Right now she's being protected by a rigged system. It's a totally rigged system. I've been saying it for a long time," he declared, as his supporters chanted "Lock her up!"

Late last month, with Clinton seemingly on a glide path to victory, a renewed FBI investigation in Clinton's email use sent shock waves through both campaigns.

Trump, the 70-year-old property tycoon and Republican flag-bearer, seized on the opening, condemning Clinton's "criminal scheme" and arguing that she is unfit to be president.

He has previously threatened to reject the result of Tuesday's vote if he loses, alleging that the race has been "rigged" by the media and the establishment elite.

Opinion polls tightened as Trump began to recover ground he lost after several women accused him of sexual assault, and the race looked headed for a photo finish.

Clinton made no direct reference to her reprieve during her Sunday campaign stops.

Instead, she hammered her opponent over his sometimes ugly rhetoric and, implicitly, the alleged covert Russian interference that have poisoned the race.

"There are powerful forces inside and outside of America that do threaten to pull us apart," she said.

"We've arrived at a moment of reckoning in this election. Our core values as Americans are being tested."

If Clinton wins, she will seek to build on Obama's cautious but progressive legacy, including his controversial health insurance reforms.

Trump has vowed to tear up the reform along with free trade agreements, to rebuild a "depleted" US military and review US alliances.

The latest polls give Clinton a narrow national lead of between three and five percentage points, but rolling averages point to a closer race, with Trump up in some swing states.

Silver has Clinton as a two-to-one favorite against Trump, but warned Sunday that her lead appears "less solid" than Obama's did before his re-election victory in 2012.
