The latest liqour shakeups for 2020 #BeAClassic #FridayFeeling

When it comes to alcoholic beverages, consumers are spoilt for choice.
Walk into any notable cocktail bar or liquor outlet and you'll find
yourself in a wonderland of distilled spirits, bottled tipples and
canned crafts. Throw in a line of psychedelic shooters and exotic
aperitifs and things soon get a little overwhelming.

"Finding a beverage you fancy can be complicated," says Marson
Strydom, mixologist at The Really Great Brand Company (RGBC). With all
the varieties and flavour combinations available (there are well over
300 gin brands on the South African market alone), choosing exactly
what one wants can be a conundrum. "Consumers are fatigued by an
overload of different brand labels, shapes and colours. Customers tend
to shop with their eyes – anything pretty gets picked up. Yesterday,
pink was a colour, today, it's a flavour."

As long as there is an abundance of liquor products on our shelves,
consumers will continue to 'drink pink'. But will consumers follow the
fads in 'Twenty Plenty', or will they fold and stay with what works
for them?

With SA Cocktail Week kicking off on 29 February, Marson Strydom
explores some of the shake-ups we can expect to see on shelves, in
bars, at festivals and at home in 2020 and beyond.

Less is more

Over-the-top cocktails and sugary concoctions are fizzling out as
mixologists turn back the clock and serve the classics. Gone are the
days of frivolous garnishes and flavour enhancers that dilute a drink
for what it is. Savouring a simple, classic drink allows us to
appreciate its true taste and quality.

Healthy alternatives

The growth of a health and wellness culture has spilled over into the
liquor market. As consumers become more aware of what they put into
their bodies, there is a greater need for high-quality, low alcohol by
volume (ABV) and alcohol-free products. We have already seen a rise in
non-alcoholic products on shelves – even the launch of an alcohol-free
drinking festival to celebrate sobriety – as well as low-calorie
spritzers and mixes. You can expect this health trend to grow.

Convenience

Alcoholic beverages are increasingly being packaged in ready-to-drink
(RTD) varieties to satisfy consumers' needs for convenience. One-litre
bottles and two-litre mixes are making way for easy-to-handle
innovations like gin-in-a-tin and pocket-sized spirits for consumption
on the go. No longer do you have to carry around multiple mixes and
ingredients to make a drink, because it's all conveniently canned.

Conscious consumption

Consumers are basing buying decisions not only to quench their thirst
– albeit with a kick – but also on whether a brand aligns with their
lifestyles. While 'low calorie' and 'alcohol-free' are important
factors, sustainability is seemingly the number one draw card when
choosing products.

"Local brands are embracing sustainable processes, ingredients,
packaging, and paying it forward with community and environmental
projects. At The Really Great Brand Company, we're dedicated to the
survival of all things classically South African. That's why for our
Wixworth gin brand in particular, for every bottle of Wixworth sold,
we contribute to stoprhinopoaching.com to help in the fight against
rhino poaching," says Strydom.

Local is lekker

There's a growing culture among local brands that embrace South
African culture and local ingredients. "We pride ourselves on our
locally produced products with local ingredients. Our unique flora –
like the renosterbos that is used to produce our Wixworth Gin – is
envied among distilleries around the world, and there is no reason why
our spirits shouldn't be either," says Strydom.

The popularity of gin

Gin is still on the rise and will be for a while. "We'll see new gins
come and go over the next two years, along with up and coming craft
spirits like spiced and botanical rums, but we'll also see gins form a
solid foundation that will carry them for years to come," says
Strydom. "Innovation will subside and we'll see a great number of gins
being discontinued. Consumers will fall back into their comfort zone
and purchase what they are most confident in – the classic gins like
Wixworth that have withstood all the trials."

An ode to the African women who are setting the #entrepreneurship bar high

The African Pride Hotel in Johannesburg recently hosted the Pan African
Women's Business Association, showcasing success stories of African
businesswomen such as Rose Ali, of Wine Routes, who specialises in
importing SA wines into Kenya for the Kenyan hospitality industry and
Kenyan Airlines business class clients, to name but a few of her
initiatives.

All these awesome African women's commerce goings-on were showcased on eNCA
#Africa.

Women need to be in every facet of traditionally maledominated strongholds
— government, politics, business, entrepreneurship,

SMMEs, civil society, religion and so on.

You name it, women need to be in there, their opinions sought and their
participation encouraged, even in traditional strongholds such as culture
or custom.

They will rightfully have their say in all aspects concerning humanity, as
they are responsible for life among all humans.

That said, it is deeply gratifying and assuring to see women step up to the
plate and break glass ceilings so long established and ensconced in the
male dominance domain.

I do not have a chromosome deficiency, or too much, in my take on total
women emancipation.

I'm a hot-blooded male like any other, and speak from that platform for our
female folk unequivocally and without malice.

African women mentioned in #Africa this week are infusing art into
furniture and interior design using traditional symbols such as the drum,
calabash shape and walking stick.

These are incorporated into beautiful designs for items like chairs,
chandeliers and lampshades.

These women ooze so much talent, drive and verve that they will eventually
have to employ, yes, male artisans to get local, national and international
orders done.

Today's interconnectedness makes things just the touch of a button away,
spawning industries that will take Africa to greater economic growth and
benefits.

Let no man stand in the way of feminist progress, lest he thwart peace here
on earth in the process.

Remember men, God put Adam to sleep and removed his rib to give him a
partner, as it was not good for man to be alone.

The way women can multitask leaves us bamboozled, so do the right thing and
don't stand in their way!

Forget gifts & roses. Grow your #love in a love bank that has #poems, letters, rings & more

How do you make your love grow? Deposit it in a love bank, of course.

The vaults of Slovakia's Love Bank are covered in the 2 900 verses of a
romantic poem and each deposit box is filled with keepsakes, such as
wedding rings, World War II letters and even ticket stubs from the first
movie that couples in love saw together.

The exhibition in Banska Stiavnica is housed in the cellar of the
inspiration for the 1846 poem Marina – whose parents married her off to
another man rather than letting her wed poor student and poet Andrej
Sladkovic.

"I think the story is great when love, no matter the hurdles, lasted
forever," said Eliska Galisova, who was yet to choose what trinket her and
boyfriend Matus Rezny would leave for all-time.

SA #poems hog #Oscars limelight as Brad Pitt, Tom Hanks, Joaquin Phoenix & more could read #Mzansi poems

Brad Pitt, Joaquin Phoenix, Tom Hanks, Scarlett Johansson, Charlize Theron and Quentin Tarantino could be reading poems about SA after the Oscars today.

A bestselling poetry book featuring two poems about SA by an author who has lived in the country and is married to a man from Cape Town is included in one of the exclusive swag bags delivered to 92nd Academy Awards nominees.

Graffiti Lane, a debut poetry collection by Kelly van Nelson — who is originally from England and now lives in Australia — is among the expensive gifts such as a 12-night cruise, false eyelashes, Botox, and a medical urine kit that tests for infections, that are given to the 24 biggest stars of the night.

Van Nelson was sworn to secrecy about her book's inclusion in the gift basket by gift bag company Hollywood Swag Bag.

She told the Sunday Times this week that she had to include SA in her book as it was a part of her children's heritage and "penning poems about it helps keep the memories of our great years in the southern Cape alive.

"I love to write about everyday life. Places I've been, people I've met, the contrasts we see every day in life but so often are blind to. SA is full of vibrant contrasts. It has so many challenges but is an insanely beautiful place with a rugged coastline that is world class. It has a pulse like nowhere else I've been to, and I've travelled to more than 60 countries.

"Even though we now live in Australia, my kids have a South African father and a British mum and they love their heritage."

Van Nelson moved from the UK to Goodwood, Cape Town, in 1996 and lived there for about a year with her husband, Shaun, and his parents. The pair moved to Scotland but returned to SA with two young children in 2009 and lived in L'Agulhas for three years.

The two poems are titled The Tablecloth and Zoetendal.

Cape Town ready for Nadal and Federer as Trevor Noah and Bill Gates sail along

Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer will clash in Cape Town for the benefit of children next week — but before that there will be a doubles match like no other when Rafa and Trevor Noah take on The Fed Express and Bill Gates.

Federer will play Nadal on February 7 at 8pm at the Cape Town Stadium.

Tickets, which went on sale in early September, sold out in minutes as the two icons attempt to set a world record for most attendees at a tennis match. The stadium has a capacity of more than 50,000 spectators.

Noah sent a friendly warning to his opponents this week, reminding them that local fans will probably be on his side.

"Hey@RogerFederer, you &@billgates want to play doubles against me & @RafaelNadal!? Okay. We accept your challenge, but be prepared for the crowd in SA to be on our side! See you Feb 7 in Cape Town! Masihambe!," he tweeted.

"This Match in Africa is a dream comes true," said Federer. "I will play in my mother's home country against my toughest rival and friend Rafa Nadal. We share not only the love for tennis but also for the good cause of giving children a better start in education and in life. I feel privileged to have other leading philanthropists on board to entertain millions of people in the stadium and on TV. It will be a once-in-lifetime moment for my family and me."

Nadal said: "Roger and I have shared so many magical moments on and off the court. Travelling with him to Cape Town and playing for the benefit of children is something I am very excited about. It will be my first time in the region with Roger as a tour guide that will be fun."
