#AVBOBPoetry winners announced as latest #Competition opens up! #Poetry #MotivationMonday

The calibre of poems entered into this year's AVBOB Poetry Prize competition made it a challenge for the 11 language editors to choose winners.

This year's competition drew more than 29 000 entries and was open to 11 official languages with a winner of each language category. The winners were announced at a gala event on Thursday, with each of the 11 firstplace winners receiving a R10 000 cash prize and a R2 500 book voucher.

The poems will be captured in the second volume of the competition print anthology, I Wish I'd said, which was compiled by competition editor-in-chief Johann De Lange, and academic, poet and author Mandla Maphumulo.

Volume Two includes 101 poems with English translations: 55 specially commissioned poems, and 44 poems drawn from the second competition.

AVBOB chief executive Frik Rademan said: "In our darkest hour, we all need upliftment and consolation. And so we built the themes of love, hope and birth into the competition. The AVBOB Poetry Competition and print anthology – along with the 'What If, South Africa?' campaign – serve to address our collective need for comfort and care. And they offer us a meditation on the things that bring us together as a nation – our experience of loss, our desire to unburden, and our need for hope."

The respective language submissions winners, along with their poems, are: Afrikaans, Tom Dreyer, Slaap jy solank, dan hou ek die fort; English, Jaco Fouché, A feeling like leaving harbour; isiNdebele, Mfana Skhosana, Isivunguvungu; isiXhosa, Simphiwe Ali Nolutshungu, Emaxhoseni; isiZulu, Halalisile Mkhize, Ubungumthombo; Sepedi, Kgabo Sebatjane, Mmane Makalawua Sebatjane; Sesotho, Kaizer Tjokoane, E thobile thatohatsi; Setswana, Thatayaone Dire, Ke a dira; Siswati, Nokukhanya Mahlalela, Ngiyafisa kube ngasho; Tshivenda, Matodzi Magoro, Nga duvha langa la vhufhelo; Xitsonga, Patrick Khosa, U tatana.

"Homage is paid to the Khoisan languages, with the inclusion of two poems by the /Xam poet Diä!kwain. And with the third AVBOB Poetry Competition launching on August 1 and running until November 30 2019, the poets, and people of South Africa will once again be able to take up pencil and paper, mobile and laptop, and craft poems that connect us one to the other , and offer us comfort and consolation," said Rademan.

Competition entrant Gregory Jumanji confirmed this with a tweet: "I feel like the poetry is inside my bloodstream. AVBOB really saved the nation with this one."

The anthology can be ordered at www.naledi.online or 078 648 8616, and is available from most bookstores. Alternatively, SMS the word 'poem' to 48423 (at a standard cost of R1.50 per SMS) to have it posted to you at a total cost of R220.

We are the #SowetoDerby so let's savour the moment! #FridayFeeling

It might not be a competitive fixture to set the tone for the new season, but the annual off-season Carling Black Label Cup tomorrow at FNB Stadium gives Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs a chance to showcase their new signings.

And what better way to do so than by giving the newbies a run in the massive fixture that is the Soweto Derby. The two giants have made marques acquisitions and many can't wait to see them in action, pitted against each other in the biggest match-up local football has to offer.

This may not be the real thing, which only starts in two weeks' time when the league kicks off, but there is no denying the excitement around the match .

We urge the fans, passionate as they are, that it is only a game and let everyone enjoy themselves.

Being #unemployed is never easy but don't lose #hope! #Inspiration

To all new graduates, please note that the world of employment is a jungle: you can either eat or be eaten. Unemployment is real and can deter your hopes and dreams if you are not strong but never give up.

There will always be those who say, "They have graduated, let us see if they will gain employment."

But know that all employed people you see today were once unemployed, so it is a possible transition.

Patiently continue your search for a job and also volunteer if need be, just for experience. Sooner or later you will smile and you might even forget that it was once an uphill climb.

Nobody said it was going to be easy. The most important thing is that you are more employable than you were yesterday. Keep going.

The world has a habit of making a way for those who know where they are going.

Get #shopping in the comfort of your home & have your groceries delivered in an hour. Thanks to #Zulzi

Zulzi, an online delivery platform which allows customers to order from retail stores such as Woolworths, Pick n Pay , Spar, Dis-Chem and Clicks and have their goods delivered to their doorstep within an hour, is the brainchild of entrepreneur Donald Valoyi.

The Zulzi app also has a database of clients' information, including grocery items frequently requested. Customers are charged a R45 delivery fee and a 7% charge on the price of groceries bought.

Valoyi said: "The company started in 2012 as an e-commerce platform where we sold books and electronics to students. In 2016 we changed our model by focusing on delivering liquor, restaurant takeaways and groceries. After a year of operating we focused on groceries because they had more potential."

The 34-year old former software developer admits that starting Zulzi came with challenges.

"The most difficult aspect of starting a company is funding. You start a business to generate money, but along the way you realise you need more capital to take your company to the next level. Families play a key role in supporting you financially and emotionally. So many businesses are funded by families, even though some entrepreneurs don't come from families with capital," he said.

Valoyi urged aspiring entrepreneurs to stay fierce and hard-working.

"You just have to start. It is not an easy journey. What you are fighting for has to be big enough for you not to sleep at night. Build a product for the future by finding a niche. Always look to other countries in the First World. Look at what they do differently that side. The world of internet is very connected. Countries like China and India have intelligent entrepreneurs who keep on cracking their own market, so it is difficult for foreigners to break through."

Zulzi has a staff complement of 70, including 50 personal shoppers.

Team leader Michael Nyathi said: "I enjoy and love my job, even though it comes with challenges because sometimes you find yourself doing multiple orders with limited time, but I eventually make it on time."

Zulzi is available in Johannesburg and Cape Town and will be launching in Pretoria in August.

Harvesting #energy from walking is the new trend!

Chinese researchers have developed a device that can harvest energy from its wearer's knee and generate 1.6microwatts of power while the wearer walks at a normal speed without any increase in effort.

The study published in the latest edition of Applied Physics Letters described the device that can power gadgets like health monitoring equipment and GPS devices.

A group of researchers from the Chinese University of Hong Kong used a smart macro-fibre material, generating energy from any sort of bending to create a mechanism similar to the slider-crank used to drive a motor.

Every time the knee flexes, the device bends and captures the biomechanical energy.

She may not have won Wimbledon but for many, Cori "Coco" Gauff is this year's champion. For someone so young, she's an amazing tennis player.

We do hope she doesn't fall prey to the stresses and temptations that often lead young athletes astray or wear them down before they reach their prime.

Here's hoping we will get to enjoy her playing for years to come.

Building #Mzansi - We all have a role to play

A lot of discussions and arguments have been raging since President Cyril Ramaphosa's State of the Nation address last month.

We have to be realistic and understand that South Africa will need a miracle to achieve what the politicians have promised us.

Instead of protesting we should all try to help to build our country and not just complain while expecting the government to provide all we need.

We have to learn not to ask what the government can do for us and instead start asking what we can do for the government.

Let us try and find opportunities for employment and, if we cannot find them, let us create them ourselves.

Anyone can start small – you can sell vegetables, clean someone's yard, wash someone's car or offer to take your neighbour's dog for a walk – and get paid for it.

Once you develop a ''work mentality'' you will see how easy it will be to attract opportunities.

After all, Rome was not built in a day.

Be inspired and play your part.

#Mzansi streets are drowning in litter

Now that I don't have a car, I do a lot of walking.

I now really notice things that one misses by zooming past in a car. To wit: we are a nation drowning in litter. The extent of it is beyond shocking!

Why people can't take it with them until they find a bin is beyond me. This has to stop, immediately.

Let's keep our streets free of litter and as attractive as the Protea flower.

#TechThursday: #Rain, #MTN and #Vodacom to accommodate eSims

South Africa's two largest cellular network providers Vodacom and MTN, and newcomer Rain, plan to accommodate eSIM-cards by 2020.

An eSIM-card is built into a smartphone and needs to be activated by a mobile network to be operational. Like a traditional SIMcard, it allows users access to mobile networks to make calls, surf the Internet or send messages.

A SIM and an eSIM can be used together in one device, and consumers would therefore be able to access different networks on one device.

A number of devices — like the iPhone Xs, iPhone Xr, Samsung Galaxy S9 and Samsung Galaxy S9+ — already have eSIMs.

Vodacom was the first South African company to accommodate eSIM cards with the Samsung Galaxy Watch, launched in March.

"[We] are currently targeting the first half of 2020 with eSIM support for other devices," a Vodacom spokesperson told Business Insider South Africa.

MTN said it is in consultation with manufacturers to finalise its eSIM service.

Newcomer Rain said the launch of its eSIM-cards is dependent on its ability to launch a RICA online platform where consumers would be able to register their SIM cards without standing in queues.

Meanwhile, Cell C said most new mobile phones do not yet contain e-SIM cards and it would, therefore, only launch the technology when most devices do.

Does height really matter? #GirlTalkZA

A new study suggests that height of a potential partner doesn't matter that much to women — or does it?

There's actually good news for all the guys who didn't quite make the height cut.

More often than not, when a woman describes her perfect man, "tall" is pretty much one of the key descriptors used among other things like dark, intelligent or handsome.

This point was proven earlier this month by Twitter user @aluve_ngoo whose thread about a date she had with a short guy sparked conversation on social media.

While many people didn't agree with how she went about "describing" her distaste for short men, other girls on the app shared her sentiments.

A Men's Health article about a study, however, implies that women actually don't consider a man's height as much as we assumed.

According to the article, in a study conducted by dating site Dating.com, they used the findings of a survey conducted on 5 000 women and 5 000 men between the ages of 21 and 50, to determine the preference of most men and women, and it revealed some interesting results.

A whopping 68% of women preferred "shorter" men, while 81% said that they would date a guy who was the same height as them.— Women24.

Five tactics to cut #bank charges! #Nedbank #FNB #Standard #Capitec #TymeBank #Absa #AfricanBank

1. Draw money at the till

Drawing money at the till is a sure way to save on banking charges.

2. Check your balance online or on your app

ATM balance enquiries cost R4 to R5, whereas those made using an app or online banking are usually free.

3. Get a low-cost bank account

When people hear "lowcost", they tend to think of an inferior product or service – that's not the case with bank accounts. With the general push away from branches and towards digital banking, some low-cost bank accounts perform just as well as a regular account but at a fraction of the price.

4. Pay on time; avoid having debit orders rejected

Debit order rejection charges are amongst the highest bank fees you can incur – R25 per R100 at some banks.

To avoid these charges, ensure there's always enough money in your account when your debit orders go off. Arrange for debit orders to be made soon after pay day.

5. Be aware of variable withdrawal charges

If you must withdraw from an ATM, remember the cost of a withdrawal sometimes varies according to the amount withdrawn.

#Makoti's are not our house maids. #OPW

The relationship between a makoti and her in-laws is always toxic and a bitter pill to swallow.

What breaks the camel's back is the pathetic ill-treatment of makotis. Why do we have to reduce them to slaves and housemaids?

In African culture, a makoti automatically becomes part of her new family. She is expected to cook and wash for us. But what we really don't understand is that times have changed with regards to modern, working-class women.

How can she come home late from work, fatigued after long hours and be expected to cook for us and do all the house chores?

And this while the house is full of our unemployed, school drop-out siblings who just sit around lazily, don't cook and eat all the food in the fridge and in the house, and keep on piling up the dishes. Fiddling with their smartphones is what they do most and know best. And who buys that food they eat? The makoti.

Ever wondered why our makotis and women nowadays are reluctant to commit to long-term relationships and courtships?

Recently married makotis don't waste time to move to their own places after the wedding to avoid all the family chaos and drama. Can we blame them?

Maybe if we in-laws become more considerate, the makotis will prolong their stay. Mind you, I am not advising them to overstay their welcome. Makotis are not slaves or housemaids. They need to feel a part of our families. They deserve dignity, compassion and respect. Let's stand by them and support them without reservation.

Makotis, we love you.

#Rihanna to work with #maskandi muso

When maskandi star Mbuzeni Mkhize performed his remix of Diamonds by Rihanna in Istanbul, Turkey, little did he know that talent scouts were watching.

Mkhize, known for his unique maskandi sound, got a call from the team of the LA based pop star that she wanted to do a song with him after he had remixed her 2012 hit track Diamonds.

This was a year after Mkhize had wowed an audience in Istanbul. Mkhize, who hails from Mkomazi, south east of KwaZulu-Natal, said he was shocked when he was contacted by Rihanna's team.

The revered guitarist is heading to the US where he will collaborate on a song with the Barbados-born singer in December.

He told Sowetan he has already began working on the song.

The globetrotter maskandi star regards the invite as something that will take the

maskandi music to its biggest level in the international arena. "Rihanna could have chosen any person to work with her. But she choose me out of hundreds of maskandi artists. For that, I am honoured and humbled. I thank my ancestors for the gift [of singing]." Mkhize explained that the deal came after an international promoter who saw him performing in Turkey last year, took a video of his performances.

"He showed the videos to Rihanna, who liked my interpretation of her song and the way I did it. She asked to meet me and if we can do a maskandi song that will be in both our albums."

Mkhize believes his reputable international profile has begun to open doors for him.

Other South African musicians such as chart-topping and globetrotting DJ Black Coffee and rapper Kwesta have had collaborations with top US artists such as Alicia Keys, and rappers Rick Ross and Wale.

Clean up and keep the #kasi clean

Nowadays we seem to have developed a very bad habit of throwing rubbish all over the place, feeding rodents in the process – something that's become problematic ekasi.

With this type of behaviour, getting rid of rats will take a long time. Littering puts our lives, particularly those of our children, in jeopardy and leaves us vulnerable to infectious diseases.

We dump dirt and plastics in rivers, causing water and air pollution. That puts the lives of animals at risk.

There are designated walking places and dumping areas at our recreational parks yet we choose to walk on the lawn and litter everywhere. Motorists also throw stuff out of their car windows, including lit cigarette butts.

Joburg used to be rated among the cleanest and tidiest cities in the world but look at it today. Also, there's nothing as disgusting as seeing men urinating anywhere they please.

By keeping our environment clean and tidy we'll surely be visiting doctors less because we'll stay hearty, healthy and as strong as oxen.

Is Zodwa Wabantu going to continue with her "rich" #DurbanJuly fashion fever

South Africa's biggest event, the Durban July is next weekend and we are curious as to what dancer and entertainer Zodwa Wabantu will wear.

Famous for her revealing wardrobe and dancing without underwear, Zodwa Wabantu is a hot topic in the press and social media.

Her Durban July barely-there outfits for the last two years have been iconic.

Last year she attended as a unapologetic nudist and donned a black lace floor-length gown with a middle high-slit and cutaways at the hips by Nonkosi Collection.

In 2017, she wore a black dress with a slit that exposed half of her bottom.

The dancer lives in Durban but is originally from Rockville, Soweto, and says the way she dresses is not to seek attention.

During an interview with East Coast Radio about her Durban July 2017 outfit, Zodwa Wabantu said she didn't care about what people said because she's not doing it for them.

"I bought the material, took it to the tailor and told him what I wanted. I didn't care about people, I always don't care about people. I wouldn't say I made the dress to draw attention," said Zodwa Wabantu.

What will Zodwa Wabantu wear this year? Will she stick to her signature style of being semi-nude or will she shock the nation and be fully dressed? Whatever she decides on wearing, it's bound to cause a stir.
