Kolisi helps women achieve #fitness goals

Rachel Kolisi teamed up with her personal trainer and friend Tammy Rawtron, to encourage other women to reach their personal fitness goals.

They created a community-based transformation guide called Rise, which was inspired by Kolisi's own fitness journey.

On September 14 they will host their eighth Rise event in Port Elizabeth.

Mistakes we all make when cooking #rice

Rice is without doubt the most delicious type of grass ever to grow in a swamp. That is not praise to be given lightly. As long as humans have lived in houses, they have eaten rice.

With the rise of convenience culture in response to rapidly diminishing supplies of free time, more people reach adulthood without internalising recipes and cooking techniques.

Here we give you some of the mistakes people make and should learn to avoid. Choosing the wrong tools

Tools depend on what you are cooking. Your choice of pot is very crucial.

A pot with a thick bottom will retain and distribute heat evenly. Thick bottoms are crucial for boiling rice in the absorption method as the formation of steam pockets play a key role in cooking it.

Not washing your rice

Many advocates of rice-washing claim that industrial by-products of the milling process (like talc) remain on the finished product. The claim is that pre-washing helps remove excess starch and any undesirable leftovers. Most domestically processed rice is free from talc, but imported strains like basmati may be processed with it. A rinse or two, using cold water, will yield fluffier, more distinct grains.

You might even grab a fine mesh strainer and pop one cup of rice under the tap. When the water draining from the grains is clear, you are good to go. The only exception should be when cooking risotto or sushi rice, where that starchy goodness is craved.

Not pre-soaking aromatic rice

Aromatic rice, like basmati and almond rice, should be pre-soaked in order to preserve the oils responsible for their signature aromas. Cooking destroys these oils, so in order to minimise cooking time, pre-soak the grains in more water than you will cook them in. This expedites cooking time by an average of 20 percent, resulting in restaurant-grade bouquets.

High temperatures

Cooking too fast causes the grains to burst open like a butterfly steak, which not only releases starch, but also ruins the texture of your meal. Even if you are aiming for porridge or pudding, ruptured grains must be avoided. Automatic rice boilers are designed to only reach boiling temperature, so anything past that is too much. — mashed.com

#September celebrates the growth of #poetry with the #AfroPoetryTimes. #DigitalMagazine #magazine #PressReader #Poem #Poet

A poet always dreams of growth.

Life, as we all know it, is a beautiful journey that begins with a single step.

Life comes packed with a lot of 'branded' lessons that teach us the skills of survival. Lessons of humility, working hard,
networking, development, growth etc. All these lessons adequately prepare us as we crank up reality in pursuit of our dreams.

Being a poet is no different.

There comes a certain phase in a poet's life were the ultimate mission automatically becomes that of growth.

Like a watered seedling clamouring for attention, every poet dreams of taking on the world through their work. Some succeed  while others drown in misery. Many never give up until they see the dawn of day.
In the Afro Poetry Times September issue, we feature some inspirational stories that will add some zest to your success seeking endeavours.

We have interviews with some poets who are doing marvellous things in the sector and we look at a Kenyan poet who left his well
paying job as a banker to realise his poetry dream.

As usual, we also have some great and amazing poems. So read on and enjoy the Afro Poetry Times – the only poetry magazine that's crafted with you in mind.

Remember you can get all back copies of the Afro Poetry Times on the PressReader App or www.pressreader.com.

Continue being the strong woman even after #WomensMonth. #GirlTalkZA

August is Women's Month, and one woman who inspires me is Caster Semenya. Even though she has constantly faced difficulty and opposition, she is still standing strong.

Strong women don't consider kindness a weakness, rather they see it as a very necessary part of their being which helps them to connect with others emotionally – and they build others up rather than tear them down.

Strong women don't use their egos for evil, but for good. They see others as their brothers and sisters and treat them as such.

Strong women don't depend on others for their happiness, they create it. If you're a strong woman, you don't let other people's feelings get you down.

You also don't let your own inner turmoil run your life. You rise above and make the best of this beautiful journey.

The #Samsung #GalaxyNote10 makes you own your lifestyle. #ProductReview

The Samsung Galaxy Note 10 is svelte, refined, and probably not worth more than a Galaxy S10.

It is the most compact Note phone to date.

* Attractive Aura Glow color

* Impressive screen

* Handy S Pen improvements

* Windows integrations close the gap between phone and PC

* Doesn't support 45W charger
* No MicroSD card support or headphone jack
* Minor changes to camera over *10, no depth camera
* Average battery size

The Galaxy Note series has set Samsung apart from other phone manufacturers since its inception with its much larger screen, the built-in S Pen stylus, and a focus on productivity.

With the latest Galaxy Note 10, Samsung is moving all of these core areas forward, fitting a larger screen in a smaller package, adding S-Pen air gestures as well as key Microsoft integrations for professional-level productivity.

But for the first time there are two Note phones: the Note 10 Plus is for those attracted to the traditionally massive screen, whereas the Note 10 is the "compact" version; it's still big, but by compact I mean it's easier to use.

Rassie is ticking the right boxes ahead of #RWC

I love the way Rassie Erasmus is honouring players in the lead-up to
the World Cup.

His blended in youth and experience and his also gone the extra mile
of bringing in new faces such as Herschel Jantjies. Jantjies has been
a marvel to watch in the green and gold. Many pundits have predicted
that he could be the key man for the Bokke in Japan with his Xfactor

Scarra's cap and Schalk's captaincy are but two examples of Rassie's
doing. But do the Boks overally have the legs to win the World Cup in
Japan? Get your copy of Trendnation South Africa on Pressreader and

Here is what to expect at the #PoetryInMcGregor Festival. #Poetry #AfroPoetryTimes

The Poetry in McGregor Festival has become a popular literary festival, with about 150 poets expected to arrive in the picturesque village soon.

From August 23 to 25, the weekend celebration of poetry will include readings, workshops, music and poetry, and open mic sessions.

The founder of the festival, Billy Kennedy, said: "Poetry is intensely valuable to me, and I reckon for the planet, too. From a child, blessed by the presence of a passionate English teacher, to this present day, as a retreat director at Temenos, poetry has been a constant thread running through my life.

"Like Zorba, poetry can embrace and celebrate the 'full catastrophe' of being alive, the paradox of what it is to be fully human and divine. It can launch one into a moment of unsurpassed beauty, and into an extraordinary awareness of being connected to a myriad things.

"It can also be an antidote to despair or tiredness and loneliness. One can even truly solve problems with its lines – not just their lexicon, but the life breathed into form by rhythm, rhyme or meter.

"It is the borrowed voice that colours a deeper awareness of who we are and what we experience.

"Poetry is often undervalued and avoided perhaps because it has a potential to propel one, on one hand, into introspection and on the other, into a vast realm of previously unimagined possibilities."

To celebrate its seventh year, the 2019 theme is "The heart of the moon."

Participating poets include Joan Hambidge, Michelé Betty, Sally Ann Murray, Brian Walter, Malcolm Gooding, Quinne Brown, Douglas Reid Skinner, Christopher Culpo, John Maytham, Luna Paige, Willem Fransman jr, Zane Dangor, Makhanda Senzagakhona, Kobus Moolman, Phillipa Namutebi, Toast Coetzer, Erns Grundling, Dan Wylie, Pieter Odendaal, Dominique Botha, Peter Fox, Thandi Sliepen, Lerato Sibanda, Hugh Hodge, Julia Kramer, Patricia Schonstein, Dorian Haarhoff, Marguerite van der Merwe, Diana Ferrus and Andries Walter Olifant. The festival is organised by The MAC Project.

Stay cool and avoid road rage

Road rage is on the increase on our roads, leading to obnoxious behaviour, and deaths as a result of anger.

Anger can be very quick and powerful, and make us do things we typically wouldn't do. Nowhere is anger more common, and potentially more dangerous than when we are behind the wheel of a car.

Road rage impacts everybody on the road. There are plenty of idiots on the roads. They speed up to beat red lights, they tailgate you, they flash their lights, they cut you off without so much as a signal to warn you, they honk their horns, and give the one-finger salute to enrage you.

Ignore rude drivers, and safely move away. Aggressive drivers can be unpredictable and it is important to keep yourself safe. Do not retaliate, drive away to fight another day.

Ke nako... The #Tropika Island of treasure. Whom & what would the 6 celebs take to a deserted island? #TIOT9

It's almost time for another season of the reality competition series Tropika Island of Treasure, in which six celebs team up with six contestants to compete for R1 million. The breathtaking Curaçao in the Caribbean will be the backdrop for season 9.

We asked this year's celeb contestants who they'd take with them if they were going to be stranded on a desert island – and what else they'd want to take along.

ACTRESS AND TV PRESENTER NTANDO DUMA

My ultimate crush, [American actor] Michael B Jordan. And I'd definitely take sunscreen.

ACTOR AND MUSICIAN BOUWER BOSCH

[American actor] Will Ferrell. Imagine what a fun time that would be. And I'd take my moustache cream and a hammock.

TV PRESENTER AND ACTRESS SIMPHIWE NGEMA

My two sisters – we're really close and get along so well. And my mascara. Anything else would run out fast – my mascara will last a very long time.

TV PRESENTER AND ACTOR KAY SIBIYA

It would have to be my boys [friends] – they know how to make the best of every situation and it'd be hella funny. And some kind of internet connection. I'd die without YouTube and Google.

SOCIAL-MEDIA INFLUENCER AND SINGER NADIA JAFTHA

Three people – my mom, manager and best friend. And my cellphone, sunscreen and a little red bikini.

ENTREPRENEUR AND TV HOST SIPHESIHLE VAZI

I'd want to be stranded with Ntando or Simphiwe – they're both strong strategists and would keep us alive! And I'd take a giant box of matches.

Three weeks ago, Mo revealed that he was going to be the new host of the morning show after DJ Fresh was shown the door by the station.

Fresh was booted out last month for using foul language on air in response to a listener.

Life is an infinite series of choices #WCW #WomensMonth

Life is an infinite series of choices. Most decisions are small, but it's the big decisions – the ones that can change your life forever – that are tough to make.

So many people can be affected by one individual's choice.

Each person has the right to make decisions about how they live their life. Each person has different ideas about what is important and what makes them feel best.

Making your own choices about the things you do is important because it gives your life meaning.

Success is adapting to change and being relevant #MondayMotivation

Some golden opportunities people miss in life are a result of dinosaurs' attitude – failure to adapt to change. Such an attitude causes one to be outdated and irrelevant.

Life evolves. Should one resist positive change for any reason, they automatically block their own way to bettering their lives.

The state of being incompetent puts one at a high risk of being substituted. So, self-introspection plays a pivotal role if we want better results in any area of our lives.

Insanity is doing things the same way and expect different results. The number of new good things you recently learned is a reflection of how much you managed to revolt against regressive attitude.

SABC's #PSL blackout, even on radio, is killing the masses. #AbsaPrem

Whatever impasse that exists between MultiChoice and SABC, it's unfortunate that ordinary soccerloving South Africans are now affected. It's true that when bull elephants fight, the grass suffers.

This country has produced legendary soccer commentators like late Phillip "Babayi" Zwane, Cebo Manyaapelo, Dan Setshedi and many others.

This was because South Africans were never deprived of soccer even during the dark days of apartheid.

Football in this country means so much, particularly for ordinary people. And radio still plays a crucial role in rural households.

I don't want to point fingers but it's fair to say the day SABC lost PSL rights was the beginning of all the problems.

Management of SABC in the last decade or so has left so much to be desired. Whatever decision the SABC takes in the near future, it must take into account the suffering masses who rely on football for entertainment.

Not everyone can afford the satellite dish and subscription.

Choose #love and fight for happiness. #FridayFeeling

Don't go into a marriage hoping your spouse will change. People are what they are and few, if any, will ever change.

In some cases they can alter a thing or two about themselves to impress you, but it will only last for a short while. Some will even pretend to be what you want them to be, but the core of who they are remains the same.

Don't torture your soul trying to change another human being. If you can see that your marriage isn't working, let it go.

It's better to walk away smiling than to stay miserable for someone who doesn't care about you. Choose happiness and fight for your happiness.

Tonight's #Powerball is worth a staggering R120m

National lottery operator Ithuba says not a single person was able to match the six winning PowerBall numbers on the R110m Tuesday draw. This has led to the operator upping the stakes to a whopping R120m for Friday's August 16 draw.

Ithuba said if there was a winner on Friday‚ he or she would join the list of the richest winners.

"If won on Friday‚ the winner will join the list of the richest PowerBall winners in the history of the South African lottery‚" said Ithuba spokesperson Naledi Masopha. Masopha said one player won R145m in August 2018 while the biggest winner bagged a massive R232m in February 2019.

The R145m PowerBall jackpot was a 34-year-old engineer based in Secunda. In an interview at the Ithuba offices in Sandton‚ the man said that he could not believe he had won and that his life would change for the good.

The R232m winner was a 50-year-old Capetonian who said the winnings would open many doors for him.

"For me it will open doors for my kids' education because that is very important to me. I'm very happy and I'm glad‚" he said in a clip posted on the eNCA news channel's Twitter feed at the time.
