Mzansi teen scoops top #Google prize

It will be a lovely weekend for a 16-year-old South African school
school who won the grand prize at Google's science fair for using
orange peel to develop a cheap super-absorbent material to help soil
retain water.

The teenager, Kiara Nirghin beat students from all over the world for
a $50,000 (£38,000) scholarship with her "fighting drought with fruit"
submission.

Her work was in response to the recent drought that has hit South Africa .

The drought, the worst since 1982, led to crop failures and animals dying.

Kiara who is a student at St Martin's High School in metropolitan
Johannesburg, said three experiments over 45 days resulted in her
coming up with the "orange peel mixture" as an alternative to
expensive and non-biodegradable super-absorbent polymers (SAPs).

It was made out of waste products from the juice-manufacturing
industry, she said.

These included molecules found in orange peels and naturally occurring
oils in avocado skins.

"The product is fully biodegradable, low-cost and has better water
retaining properties than commercial SAPs. The only resources involved
in the creation of the 'orange peel mixture' were electricity and
time, no special equipment nor materials were required," Ms Nirghin
added in her online submission.

The student, who was awarded the prize at the annual fair in
California, said she hoped it would help farmers save both money and
their crops.

The competition was open to children from the ages of 13 to 18.

Ronaldo's plane crashes in Barcelona

Cristiano Ronaldo's private plane crashed during a landing at
Barcelona's El Prat airport on Monday. No injuries were reported.

Ronaldo, who was in Dortmund at the time as Real Madrid were preparing
for what resulted in a 2-2 Champions League group stage draw against
Borussia Dortmund, was not on the plane at the time of the crash.

The Real Madrid forward leases out the Gulfstream G200, for which he
paid a reported €19 million, to corporate clients when he is not using
it.

According to Spanish media reports, the plane's landing gear broke
upon descent and the plane, which seats eight passengers and a crew of
two people, ran off the runway upon landing.

#BlackBerry to outsource smartphone manufacture as sales slump

BlackBerry will not make any more of its signature smartphones itself.
It was one of the world's largest smartphone makers but its global
market share has fallen to about one percent as other devices took
over.

BlackBerry built a reputation for innovative smartphone technology and
in 1999 rolled out its RIM 950 allowing on-the-go wireless email. The
move announced on Wednesday signals a strategic shift for the company.

The Canadian company said it will now focus on growing its software
business. "We believe that this is the best way to drive profitability
in the device business," chairman and CEO John Chen said in a
statement on Wednesday.

All development for BlackBerry-branded phones is to be left to the
company's partners, which will license its technology and brand. It
plans to make the move by February 28, when the company's financial
year ends.

Blackberry has signed one agreement already with a telecom joint
venture in Indonesia - BB Merah Putih. The move will reduce
BlackBerry's expenses by cutting out the need to carry inventory and
by lowering the number of staff and reducing the amount of equipment
it needs to hold.

SA tennis player banned for life for match fixing offenses

South African tennis player Joshua Chetty has been banned from the
sport for life after being found guilty of match-fixing charges.

The 21-year old admitted to approaching another player with financial
inducements of $2,000 to underperform in a singles match, and $600 in
a doubles match, during the ITF Futures F1 event in Stellenbosch,
South Africa, in November 2015.

The player approached by Chetty, whose identity will remain
confidential in accordance with the provisions of the Tennis
Anti-Corruption Program (TACP), rejected the corrupt offers and
reported the matter to the Tennis Integrity Unit (TIU).

The findings of a resultant TIU investigation were referred to
independent Anti-Corruption Hearing Officer, Ian Mill QC, who
considered the case and imposed the lifetime ban from all professional
tennis.

Mr Chetty is currently ranked 1,857 in singles, with a career-high of
1,370 in June 2015.

The breaches of the TACP for which he has been found guilty fall under
Sections D.1.e and D.1.g, namely:

D.1.e. No Covered Person shall, directly or indirectly, solicit or
facilitate any Player to not use his or her best efforts in any Event.

D.1.g. No Covered Person shall, directly or indirectly, offer or
provide any money, benefit or Consideration to any other Covered
Person with the intention of negatively influencing a Player's best
efforts in any Event.

The lifetime ban from all professional tennis applies with immediate
effect and means the player is not allowed to compete in, or attend,
any tournament or event organised or sanctioned by the governing
bodies of the sport.

The Tennis Integrity Unit is an initiative of the Grand Slam Board,
the International Tennis Federation, the ATP and the WTA, who are
jointly committed to a zero tolerance approach to corruption in
tennis.

What we liked about Pearl Thusi's Quantico debut

Mzansi is all about Pearl Thusi once again after the star made her
eagerly awaited Quantico debut. Most of surely tuned into the show as
the thought of missing this one didn't sound right.

That said, here are some of the best moments from her debut as
summarized by Jucy Africa.

1 Her first onscreen appearance

When she strutted down those steps looking like a boss!! Only Mama
Panther can make dropping a bunch of files look so glamorous. Also,
that grey shift dress is work wardrobe goals.

2 Looking all serious in that briefing room

After spending what felt like an eternity waiting for Pearl to come
back onscreen she reappears looking pensive and is introduced as one
of the recruits from the other groups. Cause as we've already learnt
the CIA is all about secrecy.

3 Meet your new roomie

Okay so Dayana and Alex didn't get to do major bonding in this episode
but I'm hoping the fact that they are roommates means there will be
plenty of screen-time for Pearl. Because if there's one thing we have
learnt from watching the first season its that things are never quiet
around Alex.

Let's hope Pearl is going to continue slaying it like the world is on
fire. We will always rally behind her.

How Zahara maintains her afro

When Zahara broke into the scene, she didn't just make a statement
with her angelic voice and guitar skills. She laos drew a lot of
attention with her afro. Yes guys, we've learnt that her afro is
actually hers for real. We didn't believe it at first, but yeah, all
that hair is natural. But how has she managed to keep it fresh after
so many years?

In an interview with Frochic, Zahara gave all the answers to all your
questions about her hair. Read below:

Now on to your hair; our readers are crazy about it! Is it all yours
or do you add extensions to it? Many of our readers are very curious
to know if that is all yours.
Yep! It's all mine.

Why did you decide to keep your hair natural, especially in this
industry? Many artists seem to choose to wear weaves, or relax their
hair which is usually perceived as the norm.
I have always had my hair natural. I don't like weaves. I also have a
very sensitive scalp, so I choose not to relax my hair. I used to love
braids before but that is pretty much it.

What is your hair regimen? How do you maintain your hair length, the
polished look, styling etc?
I plait my hair every night before going to bed; even if it is just
two rows. In the morning I'll wash it, comb, apply hair food and I'm
done.

With being on the road most of the time, travelling to gigs and doing
a lot of performances, how do you protect your hair from constant
styling and the manipulation that comes with preparing for a show?
I always keep my hair covered under a scarf. I do not style my hair
that much. I just give it a little nourishment and comb it.

Please dish on your must-have hair products?
I use normal hair food or petroleum jelly.

Do you believe in the saying "I'm not my hair"? Or do you believe your
hair contributes to who you are?
No, hair does not define who you are. What matters is who you are within.

How to be more confident at work

If you need a confidence boost in your day-to-day routine, check out
these tried-and-true tips. You'll bolster your sense of assurance,
come off more poised, and kick some butt in the workplace, too.

1. Ask Questions

Not knowing everything—whether that's because you're new on the job or
have incomplete information—can make you feel insecure and lead to a
lack confidence. But remember that (no matter what stage you're at in
your career) you're never going to have all the answers. So don't be
shy about asking questions, especially when you're feeling uncertain
or insecure. Instead, arm yourself with the information you need to do
your job well by asking for it.

2. Be Curious

Curiosity not only sends the message that you're ambitious and eager
to learn, it also positions you well to interface with more people and
take on new projects. So don't just do the work that comes easily. Try
something new, something that scares you just a wee bit—whether that's
asking your boss to lead the next client meeting or learning HTML.
You'll emerge more confident and empowered than if you stick to what
you already know.

3. Accept that Everyone Makes Mistakes

If you always need to be perfect, you'll always feel inadequate: that
standard is wholly unattainable. Everyone makes mistakes on the job.
You will too, and that's okay—you'll learn from them, and you'll move
on. Plus, once you let go of the need to be perfect, you free yourself
to take risks and take on new responsibilities.

4. Go Above and Beyond

With each new assignment, think of ways you can knock the ball out of
the park. Can you suggest new ideas, clients, or products? Make a
process easier or more streamlined? Or even just get the report on
your boss' desk three days early? You'll feel better about yourself if
you go the extra mile—and you'll probably get some good feedback from
others, too.

5. Ask for Feedback

Don't wait to be told that your work stinks or shines—ask for feedback
along the way. Doing so demonstrates that you care about your work and
want to succeed in your job. Plus, instead of anxiously wondering what
you're doing wrong, you'll gain a better sense of your performance,
your strengths, and your areas for improvement.

Weekend Sports Wrap

Is there stopping Manchester City this season? That is the question
bubbling on any football fans lips.

Sergio Aguero marked his return from a three-game ban for a wayward
elbow as Manchester City won 3-1 away to Swansea – the second time in
a week they had triumphed at the Liberty Stadium after their EFL Cup
victory over the south Wales side.

Manager Jose Mourinho's pre-match message of embracing the occasion of
playing in front of a packed Old Trafford crowd inspired Manchester
United to a 4-1 rout of Premier League champions Leicester City,
defender Chris Smalling has said.

After back-to-back Premier League defeats by Manchester City and
Watford, United were under pressure from their fans and returned to
winning ways with Smalling beginning the rout of the champions with a
first half header followed by goals from Juan Mata, Marcus Rashford
and Paul Pogba.

Arsenal overpowered London rivals Chelsea 3-0 at the Emirates Stadium
on Saturday to mark Arsene Wenger's 20th anniversary as Gunners boss
in style.

Like City, another team with a 100% record are the Bavarians. Joshua
Kimmich's late winner preserved Bayern Munich's 100 percent Bundesliga
record in Saturday's 1-0 win at Hamburg.

The win leaves Bayern three points clear of Borussia Dortmund, who
beat Freiburg 3-1 on Friday when Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored his
fifth goal in five games.

In Spain, Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane insisted Cristiano Ronaldo
has to learn to live with being substituted after sulking off the
field visibly frustrated in the European champions' 2-2 draw at Las
Palmas.

Zidane replaced the three-time World Player of the Year with Madrid
leading 2-1 18 minutes from time, but an unhappy Ronaldo watched from
the bench as Sergio Araujo equalised to ensure Real dropped points for
the second time in four days.

Five time champions Zamalek of Egypt will meet South Africa's Mamelodi
Sundowns in the 2016 edition of the CAF African Champions League final
scheduled for October.

Golden Arrows are the surprise leaders of the Absa Premiership after a
round of weekend matches.

Most universities to remain shut on Monday #FeesMustFall

Most universities across the country will remain shut today as the
#FeesMustFall protests intensify.

The University of Witwatersrand, University of Cape Town, and Nelson
Mandela Metropolitan University in Port Elizabeth, would be shut on
Monday.

Wits spokesperson Shirona Patel stated that the institute's senior
executive team would meet on Monday to consider its options.

Students across the country began demonstrating last week, demanding
the immediate implementation of free quality education.

The recent wave of protests – some violent – were in reaction to
Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande's announcement last Monday
that universities could hike their fees by up to 8% for next year.
Poor students would not have to pay any fee increase.

The universities of Pretoria and KwaZulu-Natal have both elected to
open their doors on Monday.

According to Stellenbosch University's last update on Friday, classes
and tests on the main campus would continue as scheduled.

Hello Zlatan, I am Ibrahimovic

There is no denying that Manchester United striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic
has plenty of lookalikes.

One even made it past security at Old Trafford on Saturday as United
bullied Leicester, but the great Swede didn't seem too impressed with
his mirror image.

We are just glad that he didn't mete out at him with a 'Cantona' flying kick.

DJ Zinhle is going to be one of the highlights at the inaugural
Essence Festival Durban

The Essence Festival is an entertainment and lifestyle extravaganza
which takes place between November 8 and 13 in Durban.

DJ Zinhle will perform alongside the likes of Ne-Yo, Wizkid, Black
Coffee and many more.

In an interview with the Sowetan on the festival, she said she prayed
to God and asked him to open a door for her so she can be apart of it.

"When I heard that Essence was coming, I was just like 'God please let
me be part of the experience'.

"Durban is a beautiful city. I'm a DJ. I'm going to be on stage and we
love big crowds. More than anything I want to be in the crowd
experiencing the festival. I'm already thinking of my set. I mean it's
a big international crowd. You have to plan and I want memorable sets
every time."

First lady of House, but rather with opening the door to more women.

#FNB to maintain prime lending rate #MPC

First National Bank (FNB) will maintain its prime lending rate at
10.5% following the decision earlier taken today by the South African
Reserve Bank (SARB) Monetary Policy Committee to leave rates unchanged
until the final MPC meeting for 2016 on 24 November. The decision
applies to all prime-linked accounts.

"We are seeing a gradual recovery in business activity from a sharp
contraction earlier in the year," says FNB CEO Jacques Celliers.
"Consumers, however, remain extremely cautious and low levels of
confidence are restraining growth. We have seen an impressive growth
in savings placed at FNB showing a high level of resilience in these
tough times."

Yet, while activity remains at this low point, there are clear
opportunities for expansion in sectors benefiting from currency
weakness and lower prices such as property and tourism," adds Mr
Celliers.

"This period of stable interest rates offers indebted consumers an
ideal opportunity to reduce their lending and create greater personal
financial stability. We continue to see stable credit health across
our consumer and business sectors; indicating that the majority of
customers are weathering current tough conditions. I urge those
customers experiencing difficulty to approach their bank to
restructure loans rather than defaulting," Says Mr Celliers

Says Sizwe Nxedlana, Chief Economist at FNB; "The SARB's decision to
keep rates on hold comes as very little surprise given the weak
economic growth backdrop and an inflation outlook that is likely to
improve. While GDP surprised on the upside in 2Q16 leading indicators
suggests that growth in 3Q16 will be softer. Headline inflation has
persistently surprised to the downside and does not look set to move
meaningfully above 6% for the year as a whole. Furthermore, underlying
inflationary pressures have remained contained with core inflation
averaging 5.5% year to date. The early parts of 2017 should see
headline inflation rate return comfortably within the SARB's target
range. The rand exchange rate has remained relatively stable over the
past few months, this combined with the downturn in international
agricultural commodity prices as well as easy global monetary policy
conditions suggests that the central bank may have reached the peak of
its hiking cycle," adds Mr Nxedlana

was disclosed on Thursday is the latest setback for the beleaguered
internet company.

Yahoo believes that the hack was state-sponsored.

The stolen data includes users' names, email addresses, telephone
numbers, dates of birth, hashed passwords and security questions for
verifying an account holder's identify.

Yahoo is recommending that users change their passwords if they
haven't done so since 2014.

Big football night as Barcelona entertain Atletico Madrid

Providing they don't slip up against Villarreal on Wednesday, Real
Madrid will be able to watch Barcelona's match against Atletico Madrid
with a smile on their face, knowing that whatever the result, they'll
have enhanced their lead over at least one of their title rivals.

A defeat for Barca could see them theoretically slip as many as six
points behind Madrid, while a draw could potentially allow Zinedine
Zidane's men a five-point cushion over Luis Enrique's side. If
Atletico are the damned at Camp Nou this week, though, they may find
themselves seven points behind their city rivals come Thursday
morning.

There will only have been five games played -- and 33 still to play --
but it would represent a significant amount of breathing space for a
Madrid side who are desperate to win the league having seen both Barca
and Atletico get their hands on the trophy since their last triumph in
2012.

And so the stage is set for the first heavyweight battle of the new La
Liga campaign, not that Barca's clashes with Atletico have needed much
hyping or stage setting in recent years.

It's the Catalan side who have won seven of the 14 meetings spread
over the last three seasons, but that doesn't tell the whole story.
Atletico knocked Barca out of the Champions League in 2014 and then
went on to win the league title at Camp Nou with a draw on the final
day of the season. A win for the Blaugrana would have earned them the
crown.

#SuperSport to broadcast live on Facebook

SuperSport's streaming service will take on another exciting dimension
this week with its first live TV broadcast on Facebook.

With a total social audience of over 14 million, SuperSport is
widening its digital reach by offering a live stream of the Varsity
Football Final between TUT and UJ on Thursday from 5.15pm (CAT).

This is a first for SuperSport, making TV content available for free
on SuperSport's Football Facebook page, one of the biggest on the
continent.

"SuperSport has built a massive community of engaged sport fans and we
are excited by the possibilities of this step," said Gideon Khobane,

hope this appeals to people on the move and unable to watch on the
traditional television platform.

"We encourage varsity sports fans who can't get to a TV to join the
live stream and show their support for their team."

Khobane assured that SuperSport will continue to explore various
streaming options on multiple digital platforms, including
SuperSport.com.

Khobane's elation was shared by Francois Pienaar, founder of Varsity Sports.

"We're very excited by the latest developments by our broadcast
partners, SuperSport, to allow for live streaming on their Facebook
page. This is a first for us and we believe this will open Varsity
Football to a much wider audience."

Don't miss the Varsity Football final - TUT vs UJ – LIVE on Thursday
on SS4, SS-Select SA and www.facebook.com/SuperSportFootball at 17:15
(CAT).

The feed will only be made available in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Inaugural Sports And Events Tourism Awards Nominations Open

Who knows better than South Africans about the power of sport to draw
a nation together? From the 1995 Rugby World Cup, to the recent
support for Team SA at the Rio 2016 Olympics, these moments are our
finest hours, when we stand united.

There are a host of events that contribute to nation building in our
country, and it is time that they were recognized for their
contributions to our society and to our economy.

With this in mind, we call for nominations in various categories for
the upcoming Sports and Events Tourism Awards:

Best International Event that contributes to tourism growth
Best Domestic Event that contributes to tourism growth
Best Event Improving the Brand Profile of the Destination
Best Event Leaving a Development Legacy
Best Emerging Township Event Contributing to local Economic Development
Best Event City or Province
Event owners, Host Cities & Sponsors may nominate events by submitting
impact assessment reports along with supporting documentation of their
events through the SETE Awards online submission forms at
http://www.thebereed.co.za/sportsandevents/sports-and-events-tourism-awards/

An Evaluation Panel made up of event tourism experts and national
government institutions will adjudicate each submission and shortlist
the nominees that will be invited to the Awards Dinner to be held on
the 26th October 2016 in the City of Tshwane. The deadline for
nominations and submissions is 7 October 2016

The Awards are an initiative of the Sports and Events Tourism Exchange
(SETE), a highly effective global business-to-business platform now in
its sixth year. Organised by Thebe Reed Exhibitions, the intention of
SETE is to position South africa as a Sports and Events Tourism
Destination.

"We strongly believe that sports & events have a significant
importance in the development of our country," says Sugen Pillay,
Commercial Director at Thebe Reed Exhibitions and the Programme
Director for the Sports and Events Tourism Exchange Conference. "From
morale boosting, to the economic injection of the proceeds of sports &
events tourism, sports & events play a constructive role in nation
building and it is time that their organisers received the recognition
they deserve. SETE is appropriate fitting forum for this recognition."

Sports and events tourism is a growing global industry with
significant economic benefits for both the event and the impact of
travel and tourism related benefits on host destinations. Since its
inception SETE has become the meeting place for key decision-makers in
the sports and events tourism industry to network, do business and
debate issues of national importance affecting the growth of the
sports and events tourism sector.

Tbo Touch set to take #DataMustFall campaign to Parly

The price of data in Mzansi is just too exorbitant. We have all at one
point run out of data just when we are in the middle of something very
important, right?

Well maybe that could soon be a thing of the past as some influential
figures are leading the #DataMustFall campaign.

Radio personality, Tbo Touch will be taking the #DataMustFall campaign
to parliament to address the issue surrounding the increasing prices
of data bundles. Bravo Touch Bravo!

Tbo has been invited to parliament to address the issue to the
Portfolio Committee on Telecommunications and Postal Services on
Wednesday.

He has also invited customers/subscribers to join him in parliament
and has asked them to forward their suggestions to him about the
on-going data issues.

The hashtag #DataMustFAll has been trending on social media, with Tbo
spearheading the entire campaign.

In an interview with TMG Entertainment, Tbo said that the prices of
data bundles are affecting the people in SA's pockets.

"Young people should be able to enjoy the benefits of e-learning by
downloading textbooks online or catching up on a lecture on Youtube,
but they can't do that because everything revolves around data and
wifi".

Data must fall! Data must fall! Data must fall!

Meat prices set to increase

How much are you paying for your meat? Yes a lot I know. But do you
know that you are about to pay more for it?

As braai season approaches, red meat prices are expected to trend
higher by at least 9 to 15 percent from now until December due to
tight supply and increased demand from consumers during the festive
season.

Currently, red meat prices are relatively stable to strong due to
tight supplies as livestock farmers hold on to stock and avoid
slaughtering in the hope that pasture conditions will improve should
seasonal rains materialise sooner.

Paul Makube, Senior Agricultural Economist at FNB says red meat
slaughtering has been substantially higher this year compared to the
past three years as a result of the drought. For example, the
cumulative sheep slaughter number is currently 111% and 69% higher
than the 2015 and 2014 levels respectively.

"In terms of the outlook for beef, we are heading into a seasonal
price increase of between R3.4 and R5.7 per kilogram (kg) for Class A
beef as braai season returns. Consumers that prefer to braai lamb can
expect to pay between R5.6 and R9.4 per kg more for Class A lamb over
the festive period," says Makube.

Pork will also benefit from the price gain of red meat. However, there
won't be much of a price movement in poultry due to increasing
imports.

"Even during tough economic conditions, we have picked up a trend
where consumers will usually cut back on luxuries and non-essentials,
but generally spend more on food and meat, during the festive season."

However, Makube cautions that prices would have to return to normal
levels in January post the festive season to avoid resistance from
consumers.

He says that with rain expected in the coming months, the situation
should start improving for livestock farmers that have suffered
financial losses as a result of the drought. Forecasts are now
projecting neutral conditions for the 2016/17 season, meaning that we
should expect normal, instead of above normal rainfall as had been
previously estimated.

Meet your #Idols top ten finalists

The Idols SA Season XII's Top 10 contestants are….

Lucia Jakeni (26) from Vereeniging in Gauteng. When she entered Idols
SA for the second time, she had one focus only – to pick the songs
that will make her husky rough diamond voice shine brighter than any
other on the show. So far, so good.

Noma Khumalo (22) from Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal. The Grade 4-7
assistant teacher by day and vocalist in a band by night is fast
becoming the soul sister of the season with her heart-tugging song
choices.

Valentine Mathe (20) from Mamelodi, outside Pretoria. Her infectious
smile and love for life translate every time she takes to the stage to
belt out a song. Born on Valentine's Day, she epitomises love and
happiness.

Nosihe Zulu (28) from Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal. Her
performances have been dominated by contemporary strong female songs
that have served her well. She certainly made an indelible impression
when she brought her young brother to the auditions.

Keegan Martin (23) from Roodepoort in Gauteng. Fourth time's the charm
for this young singer. The first three times he didn't get far;
finally trying his luck this season to rave reviews from the judges
seeing him make the Top 10.

Simphiwe Shobede (28) from Mtubatuba in KwaZulu- Natal lives on his
own and is a full time musician, actor and presenter. He will
continue with his entertainment industry career regardless of the
outcome of his Idols journey. His talent and flexibility have served
him well enough to get to the Top 10 so far.

Tebogo Louw (24) is from Stellenbosch, Western Cape. Arguably the most
watched and talked about returnee by the judges, he knows that he does
not have an easy road ahead. So far, his single-minded focus has seen
him impress all round.

Terra Kocks (28) Eden Park, Alberton. When he steps on to the Idols
stage, not only does he open himself to every single emotion the song
demands, but his incredibly layered voice sees him leave his soul on
that very stage.

Sanele Mkhize (21) is from Ntumaza in KwaZulu-Natal. During his
audition, Somizi called him "refreshing" and Randal said Robbie
Malinga, whose song he sang, would love him.

Bevin Samuels (19) from Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape. He was the
first to receive four yesses in Cape Town where he auditioned, bowling
the judges over with his performance of Billionaire by Bruno Mars.

Wanna be sociable? Research says grab a beer!

Researchers from Switzerland have confirmed what most of us already
know - drinking a single glass of beer can make people more sociable.

The team from University Hospital in Basel tested 60 healthy people,
with an equal number of men and women drinking alcoholic and
non-alcoholic beer.
They took part in a range of tasks, including a face recognition test,
empathy test and sexual arousal test.

The lead researcher said there had been little previous research in this area.
Prof Matthias Liechti explained: "Although many people drink beer and
know its effects through personal experience there is surprisingly
little scientific data on its effects on the processing of emotional
social information."

The desire to be with others, in a happy, talkative and open
environment increased in the group which drank the alcoholic beer and
was more marked in women and those with higher initial inhibitions.

As well as enabling the participants to recognise happy faces more
quickly, the beer also enhanced participants' emotional empathy,
particularly in those with lower levels of initial empathy.

Participants were also shown pictures of explicit sexual content.

After drinking non-alcoholic beer, participants rated them as less
pleasant than neutral pictures - but they were rated as more pleasant
by those who drank alcoholic beer. This was most marked in the women
participants, but researches found it did not actually enhance sexual
arousal.

Weekend Sports Wrap

All the headlines this past weekend were grabbed by Manchester
United's loss to Watford. This was United's third defeat on the trot
under Jose Mourinho's watch. Man United are currently looking like a
big budget film that flops at the box office because it lacks
creativity and story. Is it Moyes' curse or Van Gaal's anger haunting
them?

While United continue losing as if its the next hot beat, Manchester
City continued their perfect start to the season and remained top of
the Premier League table with a 4-0 win against Bournemouth at the
Etihad Stadium.

Goals from Kevin De Bruyne, Kelechi Iheanacho, Raheem Sterling and
Ilkay Gundogan secured City's eighth successive win -- an
unprecedented feat for the club at the start of a season -- since
Guardiola took charge.

In the MTN8, Bidvest Wits sailed through to the final after being
frustrated to a nil all draw by new boys Cape Town City.

In the CAF Champions league semi finals first legs, Zamalek hammered
Wydad Casablanca 4-0 while South Africa's representatives Mamelodi
Sundowns suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Zesco United.

In the Championship, the Springboks seem to be having a curse of their
own. They are warmly complimenting Man United's tumble by also
succumbing to their third successive defeat after falling to the
mighty All Blacks. The world champions clinched the Castle Lager Rugby
Championship with a 41-13 win in Christchurch. Elsewhere, Australia
sailed to a 36-20 victory over the vastly improved Argentina.

Germany's Nico Rosberg celebrated his 200th Formula One race by
retaking the championship lead from Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton
after a pole to flag win in Singapore on Sunday.

Northern Cape clinched Pool B of the Africa T20 Cup in the most
convincing style imaginable when they thrashed Kenya by 97 runs in
their final qualifying match at the Oudtshoorn Recreation Ground on
Sunday.

Lastly in tennis news, Argentina made it to the Davis Cup final on
Sunday after they dispatched holders Great Britain 3-2.

Nkalakatha hitmaker Mandoza succumbs to brain cancer

Kwaito legend Mduduzi Tshabalala, better know in the South African
music fraternity as Mandoza, died on Sunday, after being taken to
hospital earlier in the morning.

The news was confirmed by TMG Entertainment, although there has been
nothing forthcoming from the family as yet. The Nkalakatha hitmaker
had a tumour in his brain. Prior to this weekend, his condition had
been serious, yet stable.

The 38-year-old musician was among the most versatile in the country,
having been discovered by King of Kwaito Arthur Mafokate. His rise in
the industry was meteoric, and he became an inspiration to many young
South Africans throughout his career – a symbol of somebody who had
defied all the odds to become one of the country's greatest music
sensations.

His first album, 9II5 Zola South, was a top seller and a sign of major
things to come. Just one year later (2000) he released Nkalakatha,
which earned multi-platinum status and entrenched Mandoza's status as
one of the foremost and relevant musicians in South Africa.

The title track Nkalakatha was also significant because it broke
boundaries, becoming a chart topper on both traditionally black and
white radio stations. It was recognised as the best song in South
Africa in 2001. However, that was not the end for Mandoza.

The 2000s were defined by Mandoza hit after Mandoza hit. They
included: It's All Right- with Tokollo and Kabelo (2001), Godoba
(2002), Tornado (2003), S'gelekeqe (2004), Same Difference – (with
Danny K) (2004), Phunyuka Bamphethe (2005), Ngalabesi (2006), Champion
(2007), Ingwenya (2008) and Real Deal (2010).

Three uses of salt that will thrill you, for real

Apart from using salt in our meals, we hardly use it for anything
else. We use a pinch when baking or a teaspoon in lots of water when
we have a sore throat. But common salt is usually ignored.

Kitchen items like baking soda, lemon juice etc. get all the publicity
and stuff. But no longer. For our purposes here, use iodized salt.
This contains sodium, chlorine and iodine. Here are three uses you
didn't know you can get out of your table salt:

1. Hair Softener
Does your hair break when you comb it? If you belong to the class of
people who have very coarse and hard hair texture, then your table
salt can rescue you. Add two tablespoons of salt to your shampoo.
Shake well to mix it together. Wet your hair. Then apply the salt
shampoo mixture to the roots of your hair. Massage properly. Then wash
off. This will remove product buildup and keep your hair softer.

2. Dandruff Treatment
Dandruff is a problem for many people. The flaky itchy nuisance called
dandruff can easily be cured. All you need? Just some salt! Partition
your hair into sections. Wet your fingers. Then pick up some salt with
your wet fingers and massage that section. The salt will act as an
exfoliator and remove the dead skin cells that cause those
embarrassing flakes. Wash your hair with shampoo and conditioner after
you've massaged your entire hair with salt.

3. Increase Hair Volume
People with full hair are often the envy of those with thin and scanty
hair. The full hair struggle is one that I'll simply say:

If you want fuller and bouncier hair, salt can help you with that. Mix
equal amount of salt and conditioner in a bowl. Shampoo your hair like
you'd usually do. Then apply the salt and conditioner mixture to the
roots of your hair. Wait 20 minutes before rinsing it off. Do this
once in two months. This is so the salt doesn't dry out your hair.

Jessica Nkosi gets another Our Perfect Wedding fling #OPW

After her short stunt on Our Perfect Wedding, holding the show down
for Thembisa Mdoda, Jessica Nkosi returns as the host of Mzansi's
popular wedding show.

As from the 9th of October 2016, the well-known actress famous for her
role as Qondi on Mzansi Magic's telenovela-turned-soap-opera, Isibaya

Siyakha Tshayela disconnected from #Idols

Is today Friday the 13th? Hmmm no it isn't.

But some bad news that crept into my inbox is that Siyakha Tshayela
has been withdrawn from the 2016 season of Idols South Africa with
immediate effect as a result of a dispute between herself and an
independent recording company.

It turns out that participants are required to sign an exclusive
recording deal with the Idols-appointed recording label when they
enter the series.

On the 1st of August, Siyakhainformed Idols that she had entered into
discussions with an independent recording company before entering the
competition, but she maintained there was no contract in place. The
recording company insists there is.

"Discussions have been held with all the affected parties since then,
but there is still no resolution. Due to conditions stipulated by the
Idols format rights holder, we are unable to continue with a
contestant that is currently involved in a legal dispute of this
nature. Ms. Tshayela is therefore not able to continue as a
contestant," said Idols.

One has to feel sorry for the young lady after getting this far. With
the power of her voice, she just has to pick up the pieces and soldier
on.

Bayern Munich gear for #Oktoberfest

There is nothing that beats a cold beer. And if you are a fan of
Bayern Munich, then you know just how good a cold beer tastes like
after a game.

Beer and celebrations do go along just perfectly. Smart from their
convincing 5-0 demolition of Rostov in the Uefa Champions League,
Bayern Munich enjoyed a beer or two while wearing their new Lederhosen
ahead of the opening of the famous Oktoberfest.

The festival is a world famous Bavarian event, and it starts on 18
September and runs all the way until the beginning of October in the
city of Munich.

The German giants partnered up with the beer sponsor of the event,
Paulaner, to take a few images for the opening of the festival.

This year was Italian manager Carlo Ancelotti's first time being
involved in the build-up to the event, and you can see the club's
stars with beers in their hand.

Its beer aplenty in Munich.

New #Renault Megane has arrived

The long-awaited and much-anticipated NEW RENAULT MÉGANE is here.

Mapaseka Koentle sheds light on her Dintle character #Scandal

"So is that it? Where is the jewellery? This is a jewellery moment,"
she vents out at her not so rich husband.

She graces our screens as the vivacious Dintle who stops at nothing
until she gets what she wants. She is all about the money and breaks
all the rules for some jewellery and top quality clothes.

Dintle is just the sort of young woman that most parents warn their
children from being friends with but the actress who plays her says
she is more of an honest, hard-working girl who tries to be nice to
people.

Mapaseka Koetle alludes that while her role in 'Scandal!' fits her
perfectly, she doesn't herself have any of the ruthless qualities of
her character …

Speaking to SunBuzz recently, award winning Mapaseka divulged: "Dintle
loves money so much she sold her daughter. She is always scheming and
wants all the best things, but doesn't want to work for them.

"I also have a lot of energy, but I don't like hurting people. I
believe in hard work to get what I want."

Productivity awards for productive businesses #ProductivitySA

The entity responsible for promoting productivity within South Africa,
Productivity SA, will hold an awards ceremony to recognise the winners
of the Western Cape Regional Productivity Awards at an event to be
held on 19 September 2016 in Cape Town at the Table Bay Hotel,
Waterfront.

Through awarding these organisations, which are from the public,
private and emerging sectors, Productivity SA aims to encourage other
organisations to strive to be productive and globally competitive. The
CEO of Productivity SA, Mr. Mothunye Mothiba says as the country's
fight against unemployment intensifies, it is through organisations
like the finalists that unemployment can be tacked head on.

These awards seek to recognise individuals, organisations and
communities for their contributions to building South Africa's
productive capacity.  The awards provide a platform to inspire a
competitive and productive South Africa.  Productivity improvement is
considered the most effective way of ensuring ongoing competitiveness,
economic growth and, consequently, more wealth for all.

All South Africans (not only workers in the formal sector) are central
to this process.  South Africa currently faces major challenges, for
example on how to create employment opportunities, stimulate economic
growth and reduce poverty. If South Africa is to reduce unemployment
and poverty, and increase its economic growth, emphasis should be on
developing productive capacity in all sectors of the economy.
