5 ways to support a small South African business

5 ways to support a small business:

1.    Looking for a new Spring wardrobe? – we have many great
designers, choose a local clothing brand to complete your look – there
are many brands available in local stores, pop-up shops and online.

2.    Spring has sprung! If you want to fill your house with flowers
or treat a loved one – stop and shop at your local florist or even a
roadside stall.

3.    Fancy a snack or weekend treat – Mom and Pop shops have not died
out yet, look for one in your local area and treat yourself to their
many goodies.

4.    Spring Cleaning or DIY fever hitting you? Support your local
hardware store, they are many well located stores with knowledgeable
staff to assist you with your project.

5.    Having a Spring party – consider local bakeries, home industries
and caterers, their produce is always fresh and tasty!

The National Small Business Chamber (NSBC), with Title Sponsor
Nedbank, is gearing up for its 5th Small Business Friday (SBF) this
Friday 2 September. The movement is about mobilising all South
Africans to support their local small businesses. Mike Anderson, CEO
and founder of NSBC, says that entrepreneurship is one of the
cornerstones of the South African economy and it is thus vital to
sustain this sector.

How much it costs to hire #Mzansi celebs

Ever wondered how much your favourite SA artist bags home after a
performance? It's not secret, South African musician make some real
money especially if they get a lot of bookings. We did some digging
online and put together this list of the playing fees of some of our
musical faves. Start saving those pennies guys!

AKA-  Between R90k & R130k

AKA recently revealed his price during a discussion on how much he
earned campaigning for the ANC during the local municipal elections.

Cassper Nyovest — R120k plus

According to a Sunday World report in February‚ AKA's rival Cassper
Nyovest is said to earn anything from R120‚000 per show. Although he
did say in a tweet a little after that he doesn't know how much he
charges anymore because the price "keeps going up."

Uhuru — R100k plus

A report in Move magazine at the end of 2014 claimed that popular
kwaito-house group Uhuru charges nothing less than R100‚000 a show.

The same report also claimed to reveal the cost of hiring Mi Casa and
Mafikizolo at a cool R80k each.

HHP- Between R55k and R100k

January is generally the time that things may start to slow down for
artists as bookings start to dry up. So‚ you can excuse Motswako rap
legend HHP from advertising his services to fans via Twitter early
last year.

"Anybody wanting to book HHP this year‚ I only play with a band. So
it's either you book full or half band…Half R55k. Full R100k. Thank
you‚" he told fans.

DJ Zinhle — R70 K

A few months later DJ Zinhle revealed to Gareth Cliff that she earns
around R70 000 a show.

"I'm doing a show for a launch and we're charging them 70‚000‚" she
told Gareth in a CliffCentral interview.

Nathi Mankayi — Between R50k and R140k

A recent report in Sunday World claimed that Nomvula hitmaker Nathi
Mankayi charges between R50‚000 and R140‚000.

The same report claimed the following figures:

Zahara – R100k plus

K.O –  R70k

Kelly Khumalo — R35k

But none of those figures come close to what the publication claims
legendary Jazz musician Hugh Masekela costs.

The paper reported that Hugh Masekela costs a whopping R280k per gig.

Plight of SA's junior doctors to be shown on film #Doc-U-Mentally

A new film which documents the crazy hours junior doctors have to work
in South Africa – set to be released this September – will give the
public a glimpse into the gruelling pressures our more than 5 000
junior doctors have to face every day.

The movie, Doc-U-Mentally, which is set mainly at Ngwelezane Hospital
in Empangeni (KwaZulu-Natal), is not for the faint-hearted and shows
real-life scenes of stab-wounds, gashes that must be sown up, near
drownings, and everything in between that junior doctors need to deal
with during a regular shift.

It features Dr Saishrien Rasen in the surgery unit, Dr Yenziwe Ngema
in orthopaedics, Dr Wanele Ganya in paediatrics, Dr Amy Salvesen in
emergency medicines and Dr Lourens Wahl in casualty.

The documentary also drew the interest of Pharma Dynamics, one of SA's
leading generic pharmaceutical firms, who along with the support from
the SA Medical Association (SAMA), KwaZulu-Natal Film Commission and
funds raised by fellow doctors via a crowdfunding campaign, made the
documentary a reality.

Doc-U-Mentally will be screened at both the upcoming Jozi- and UGU
Film Festivals (KZN) on the 17th and 18th of September.

Show times are as follows:

Jozi Film Festival:

· Eyethu Lifestyle Centre, Soweto – Saturday, 17 September at 2pm
· Rosebank Cinema Nouveau – Sunday, 18 September at 12pm

UGU Film Festival:

· Desroches Hotel – Saturday, 17 September at 2.30pm

Awesome Brands - #Nitida Shiraz 2012 @NitidaWine

When one opens Nitida's 2012 Shiraz, the sensational aroma that oozes
from the bottle narrates a story only known by wine lovers. The story
of love, happiness and victory. An amazing story indeed.

The taste notes are splendid and match well with the elegantly crafted
bottle. Nitida's wines are well known for being bold without being
aggressive.

Nitida's Shiraz has a heavy bouquet full of pink peppercorns, jasmine,
lavender and light vanilla.

The rich aromatic nature of this incredible wine lights up the palate,
with the young tanning structure coming through to add a much needed
dry finish.

This wine is good for food pairing and i will try my next bottle with
a roast leg of lamb studded with lots of garlic. I could also pair it
with beef dishes or a braai. Its just a match maker made in heaven.

To find out more about this great wine and other super Nitida wines,
visit www.nitida.co.za. You can also purchase this lovely wine on
their online wine store.

Predictive analytics helps SME's overcome cash flow issues

As the economy continues to contract, optimal cash flow management and
forecasting has become a critical component for the success and
failure of small businesses.

Consequently, SMEs are now spending more time managing cash coming in
and going out of the business in order to improve financial
performance and eliminate operational efficiencies.

Dr Yudhvir Seetharam, Head of Analytics for FNB Business says
adequately keeping track of customer invoice payments while making
sure the business has enough stock and revenue to pay employees can
prove to be difficult for small businesses that are just starting out.

"Furthermore, when the economy is not doing well, business owners
often spend every minute projecting cash flow to avoid risks."

However, this is not practical as business owners may be required to
focus their attention on other areas of the business. The challenge
lies in accurately and efficiently collecting data, analysing it and
using the information to make strategic business decisions.

According to Dr Seetharam, predictive analytics tools can be a
solution to this problem as they would allow business owners to
produce valuable insight from financial data. This would make the
process of cash flow management more efficient by eliminating human
error and improving accuracy as the systems use proven models and
formulas to analyse the information.

"The insight can be used to determine where the business is falling
short, allowing management to make key strategic decisions. For
example, a business that is facing challenges due to late invoice
payments can offer customers discounts for paying earlier and free up
cash in the process," says Dr Seetharam.

Having a positive cash flow balance can make SMEs more competitive,
placing them in a good position to take advantage of business
opportunities.

There are a number of free and commercial online predictive analytics
tools that SMEs can use for cash flow management. For example, FNB
offers its customers a free online solution known as Instant Cash Flow
which shows a business' actual historical cash flow movements as well
as projected cash flows for the upcoming months. It produces graphs
that are calculated by analysing historical patterns from transactions
in the client's bank statements.

As a result, businesses are able analyse the data as it comes in,
making cash flow forecasting a seamless process. Moreover, SMEs can
establish benchmarks for when the business has more cash reserves. In
this way they can seamlessly transfer surplus funds into an
appropriate investment account, and back again in time for when they
may need them. Data then becomes a planning tool that businesses can
use to maximise return on cash reserves.

"With cash flow management being a key ingredient for business
success, there is no reason why SMEs should not consider using
predictive analytics to increase efficiency and complement their
financial management tools," concludes Dr Seetharam.

Young entrepreneurs are redefining business

Young entrepreneurs are building the future of our country. That
future will be shaped, to some extent, by their values, priorities and
characteristics.

Some of the most interesting local findings on South African young
entrepreneurs include:

-       78% say they would sacrifice profit to stay true to their values

-       80% see doing social good as a high priority

-       52% make time to socialise with their team at least once a
week, with 23% committing to every fortnight

-       57% say Facebook is their preferred channel for brands to
communicate with them, followed by personalised emails at 34%

-       29% started a business to be a master of their own destiny,
followed by 21% to make money, and 21% to turn an idea into a reality.

The report, which examines the attitudes and behaviours of young
entrepreneurs around the world shows that they are optimistic and put
in the hours, but want flexibility over when, where and with whom they
do business. They are determined to surround themselves with people
who share their values and ambitions. And, they are especially good at
using technology to overcome obstacles, using mobile tools to work
remotely, stay in contact with co-workers, and run their business.

This generation is serious about maintaining their work/life balance,
making investments in philanthropy and staying true to their personal
values.

Puma's win over awful #Springboks was well deserved

The Springboks were beaten 26-24 by Argentina and headlines of that
rather 'expected' loss have been dominating both print and online
media.

To be honest, the Springboks played second fiddle to a rejuvenated
Argentina side and could have easily lost the game had injuries not
plagued Los Pumas in the second half.

Buoyed by their multitudes in Salta, the Puma played with much
positive energy and hunger. Star fly-half Nicolas Sanchez, the leading
points scorer at the 2015 Rugby World Cup in England, was impeccable.

Many Boks fans thought they would leave it until late to catapult
another win like they did in Mbombela but dololo.

Perhaps the Springboks talking point should about that crucial fly
half position. Elton Jantjies was in the news all week for not
delivering. But he started the game and was replaced by veteran Morne
Steyn whose kicking game also left a lot to be desired.

The Pumas were supreme when it came to attacking flair and innovation
against a Bok team that still looks like it is between games – much
like the Stormers appeared to be for much of Coetzee's reign at the
Cape franchise – and it wouldn't have come as any surprise that they
scored the first try off a move that started deep inside their own
half. Fullback Joaquin Tuculet was the man who rounded it off.

The Bok defence was one of several areas where they were found
wanting, and too frequently the Pumas were able to ghost through gaps
that shouldn't have been there.

After claiming the Bledisloe Cup courtesy of two emphatic wins over
Tasmanian rivals Australia, the All Blacks now comfortably seat at the
top of the Rugby Championship with 10 points. Both South Africa and
Argentina are second on 5 points each while the Wallabies anchor the
standings without any points on the board.

The next round of matches is on the 10th of September when the Boks
visit Brisbane while New Zealand host Argentina.

Minnie Dlamini started working aged 14

She stands among the most loved media personalities Mzansi has ever
produced. Her journey to fame stems back to 2010 when she won SABC 1's
Live presenter search competition.

Yes, its Minnie Dlamini.

After just a few months of presenting Live, Minnie received a role on
SABC 1's soapie, Generations as Miranda. Her star was shinning and the
amount of exposure and variety of audience she received from these two
shows was more than enough to turn any unknown into an instant star.

Speaking to Anele Mdoda on the Real Talk, Minnie opened up about the
challenges she faced when her father lost her job. Although things
became tough, Minnie rose above the challenge when she started working
at an young age.

"It was rough because we were at a verge of loosing everything but the
house. But instead of that breaking us apart as a family, we came
closer. I started working at the age of about 14 /15 and I started
making money that went home."

That testimony surely has that ability of inspiring anyone. If you
believe, you can pull through. Let me end off with Boity Thulo's famed
quote; 'Own Your Throne"

Inflation triggering downward salary trend #BanservAfrica

The growth gap between salaries and pensions continues to widen,
according to the latest BankservAfrica Disposable Salary Index (BDSI)
and Private Pension Payments (BPPI) indexes – a trend that began in
January this year due to economic pressures.

BankservAfrica tracks take-home pay and pensions that are paid via the
South African payment system on a monthly basis and provides valuable
insights on South African consumers as well as salary and pension
trends.

For the second consecutive month, disposable salaries - as paid
through the South African payment system via BankservAfrica – declined
in real terms due to increased inflation.

"The decline of 2.2% year-on-year in real terms in July is the biggest
since early 2015 when government salary increases were delayed by
three months," says Dr Caroline Belrose, Head of Knowledge and Risk
Services at BankservAfrica.

The impact of higher inflation and the weak economy is very evident.
Although salaries increased in nominal terms by 4% year-on-year, the
inflation rate is far higher. This is exacerbated by the fact that
formal sector employees are not getting salary increases to make up
for this. High-income earners are also bearing this burden.

"Take-home salaries are being squeezed further by increases in
deductions on gross salaries, such as personal tax hikes, and medical
insurance, which increased by 9.2%, nearly one-and-a-half times the
inflation rate," says Mike Schüssler, Chief Economist at Economists
dotcoza.

Furthermore, the data shows that the weakened economy has reduced the
probability of bonus payments, while the strained economic conditions
have lowered hopes of salary increases.

The only notable difference was in the public sector. Representing the
largest employment sector, salaries here increased by 7.6%. If it had
not been for the late payment of government salary increases last
year, the data shows that most of the month's salary increases would
have been below the rate of inflation. As a result, government
employees, with two effective salary increases – due to the late
payment of salaries last year – had a substantial impact on salary
increase in this month's BDSI.

Wanna be ambitious and competitive? Here's how

Ambition gets a bad rap. The trait that pushes someone toward success

it's about beating the other person. Channel it correctly, however,
and ambition can bring great results.Ambition gets a bad rap. The
trait that pushes someone toward success can sometimes turn into a
game where winning isn't about achieving; it's about beating the other
person. Channel it correctly, however, and ambition can bring great
results.

Here how you can become a very ambitious and competitive person in 5 ways:

1. Select something you wish to accomplish in the next 1-5 years.

There are many factors that go into what you would like to accomplish.
Your age, educational qualifications, bank balance and family
connections all factor into the equation. Be realistic and go for
something you feel like you can achieve which would make you happy.

2. Try to go for a 1-year plan.

This will make it easier for you as you will then be able to see
tangible results quickly and can feel happy that you've made progress.
Waiting 5 years can be hard and many things can happen during this
time. It could be as simple as mastering Photoshop and then using that
skill to make money.

3. Make money with your accomplishment.

Being able to make money with the thing you desire to achieve is very
important as it provides impetus. Money is necessary for continuous
improvement and to network with people in the industry. For instance,
if you wanted to be truly great at Photoshop you would need to have
some money to move to a place where there are ample jobs and top
professionals who can share their expertise. Not to mention you also
want to attend conferences and events that are relevant to this skill.

4. Share your knowledge

In this day and age, it is all about continuous learning and one has
to be ready to adapt as quickly as possible. It is who knows you and
you want to put your best foot forward by letting people know that you
have expertise. Additionally, it is great way to connect with
like-minded people who can fuel your competitive drive. It is hard to
be a loner so being good at something you enjoy and hanging out with
such people will give you immense pleasure.

5. Set goals to achieve something you would be proud of and then look
to gather the knowledge necessary to live an independent life.

This is very much necessary to keep you motivated and be at the top of
your game when competing. So try to look to get your own place even if
it is on rent and your own food, etc. To do this you may have to go
against the grain and be disruptive in your line of work. At the end
of the day, if you are very good at something then you must get paid
what you're worth.

Hilton Worldwide SA awards internships

Yes fella's, it is that time of the year were matriculants are gearing
up for the exams that will shape their lives. We all passed through
that phase and here we are today. Celebrating success in our careers.

Anyway yesterday was a memorable day as Hilton Worldwide's local
hotels in South Africa, in conjunction with The Culture, Art, Tourism,
Hospitality, and Sport Sector Education and Training Authority
(CATHSSETA), awarded internships worth almost R 3.5 million to 60
university students from across the country.

The initiative, is aimed at creating sustainable careers for the youth
by way of learning and development opportunities to train them in the
skills they require for potential future positions in the hospitality
industry.

In attendance was South African Minister of Tourism Derek Hanekom,
members of CATHSSETA, as well as inspirational guest speaker Tankiso
Motaung. Motaung, a qualified engineer, made headlines earlier this
year after a photograph of him begging for a job in the Sandton
Central Business District went viral.

Alexandra based, Minerva High School Choir also made a special
appearance and celebrated the 60 beneficiaries in true South African
spirit.

Addressing attendees at the event, the honorable Minister of Tourism
Derek Hanekom, said that boosts in tourism meant more opportunities
and jobs for the industry at large. He encouraged the youth, who will
one day make up the future workforce of the hospitality industry, to
take full advantage of their internships and the opportunity to learn
from Hilton's world class offering.

"The focus of the Hilton Internships and Work Integrated Learnerships
is to provide a consistent high-quality model that not only meets the
requirements of providing participating students with work experience,
but also to expose them to the industry and all that it has to offer."
explained Jan van der Putten, Hilton Worldwide's Vice President
Operations.

Are you ready to live it out loud? #SuperDiski kicks off tonight

Super Diski is back and the best of local football hits our screens
this evening as Wits University welcome a new look Kaizer Chiefs
outfit.

Personally, I cannot wait to see the referee blowing the first whistle
to signal the beginning of yet another action packed season. And I am
sure you, the fans, have already begun sparking some interesting
debates on social media.

It seems like most pundits are tipping defending champions Mamelodi
Sundowns to reclaim their title after their lop-sided title win last
season when they won by a record 14 points.

However, Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates will be
desperate for an improvement on the past 12 months when they both
failed to win silverware.

The likes of BidVest Wits and SuperSport United cannot be counted out
and will also be keen to make an early impression with positive
results on match day one.

Other fixtures on Tuesday will see the new Cape Town City franchise
play Polokwane City at Cape Town Stadium, while reigning National
First Division champions Baroka FC take their top-flight bow at home
to Ajax Cape Town – a match to be played at Old Peter Mokaba Stadium

So, let us all sit back and live it out loud! Welcome back PSL. My
telly will definitely be bringing the action into my living room this
evening.

Leicester City will be available in SA from September for just R999

They came, they saw, they conquered and won over a million
'sympathisers' during their search for glory.

Yes, at one point or another Leicester City touched our energy as they
crafted arguably the biggest surprise in modern day football by
clinching the lucrative Barclay's Premiership crown.

Good news South Africa is that effective September, Leicester City's
iconic jersey will be available at PUMA outlets.

The sleek contemporary style brings a bold, geometric jacquard design
to the body and sleeves to create an eye catching on pitch statement,
while also boasting a traditional yet stylised collar. The textured
form stripe and contrasting piping featured on the shirt and shorts,
give a subtle flash of gold to showcase the club's Champion status
giving players and fans alike a look of which they can be proud.

The new official 16/17 home kit football jersey, retailing for R999,
will be available at PUMA stores from September 2016. #ForeverFearless

Kelly Khumalo to hit the big screen

Kelly Khumalo is shooting a movie bluh bluh bluh... That's not
something that you hear everyday right?

Well it turns out that the singer and actress is indeed set to become
movie star too. And this will happen early next year. Kelly is going
to feature in a movie called Zulu Wedding, alongside Hollywood talent
such as Darrin Dewitt Henson and Carl Payne.

She will play the character of Yvonne, who is friends with the movie's
female lead (played by former Generations actress Nondumiso Tembe).

"The movie is scheduled for cinema release in March next year, "
publicist Koketso Phala told Drum magazine.

Some well known names appearing in the cast include Generations: The
Legacy's heart-throb Vuyo Dabula, Bubu Mazibuko, Lorcia Cooper and
S'thandiwe Kgoroge.

Great that Kelly is getting movie gigs. Her acting prowess can never
be undoubted as she once had an exciting role on eTV's Rhythm City.

Struggling farmers to benefit from low fuel prices

The heavens weren't so forgiving this past season as many crops
wilted. Yeah we all know that when such a catastrophe happens, a
drought strikes. This drought has had a devastating effect to farmers
since they used many farming inputs and are now there for struggling
financially.

With the price of fuel and diesel set to go down by at least 65 cents,
farmers will greatly benefit from this.

Dawie Maree, Head of Information and Marketing at FNB Business,
Agriculture, believes that farmers in South Africa have endured a
daunting test due to the drought and it will take a couple of years
before they fully recover.

Okay so logically speaking, fuel and diesel is commonly used for
tillage, harvesting, machinery and transportation. This then makes it
a critical component for both small-scale and commercial farmers, as
well as the entire agricultural value chain.

Given the tough economic environment, subdued growth, coupled with the
possibility of another interest rate hike this year and the imminent
tyre levy, savings on fuel and diesel are bound to have an immediate
impact on the bottom line of farmers.

"Furthermore, lower fuel costs in the long-term would probably result
in lower food inflation, which would benefit consumers, who are also
under significant pressure. However, consumers should expect a delayed
effect as it could take several months before the savings translate to
lower food prices, considering that fuel prices do not increase in the
interim," concludes Maree.

Lower food inflation does keep us all happy in the end. So bravo to
the reduction of fuel prices. Its just what the doctor ordered to make
our 2016 December holidays even more memorable.

Mark Boucher named as new Multiply Titans coach

If you go to war, just make sure the feisty diminutive fighter with
the big gloves is on your side. He was in the South African changing
room for 14 years, representing the Proteas in 147 Tests and 295
One-Day Internationals (ODIs).

Now Mark Boucher has been appointed as coach of the Multiply Titans,
winner of all three domestic titles the past two seasons.

He will replace the successful Rob Walter, who recently left the
Titans to join the Otago Volts as head coach.

Boucher's Test career was terminated by default rather than by design
as he was hit in the eye by a bail in a warm-up game on the tour to
England in 2012.

As a wicketkeeper he finished with a world-class record of 532 catches
and 23 stumpings and established a career as one of the finest
glove-men in the recent history of the game.

Boucher loved the scrap, the heat of the battle. He lived for the big
moments of the game. When the chips were down, Boucher was at his
best.

Friday Night Football, the dawn of a new #EPL era

Who would have thought that the world's most expensive player Paul
Pogba will make his eagerly awaited 'return' debut at Old Trafford on
a Friday night? Certainly not I.

Well the guys at the Premier League have ushered in a new Premier
League era - Friday night football and the very first clash will
feature Jose Mourinho's Manchester United vs Southampton.

There has been a lot of mixed reaction from South Africans of all
walks of life about the new Friday Night Football slot but how huge is
such a night? Without any great tradition in England of Friday night
sport, Saturday afternoons have always been the natural home of
football.

This serves as a reminder of the game's origins as the reward at the
end of the English worker's five-and-a-half-day week. When factories
and mines emptied out, the crowds headed in large numbers to the
football stadium for a 3 p.m. kickoff.

But the primacy of Saturday football has long since eroded away.
Midweek games became commonplace in the 1960s, in part due to the
advent of the League Cup, while regular Sunday football has been
around for more than 30 years.

So guys expect more Friday Night Football in the coming months. It is
a new era and aren't we proud to be part of it?

South Africa needs more startup businesses

The Global Entrepreneur Monitor (GEM) global report says that while
South Africa is not alone in its decline and failure rate for small
businesses, what remains concerning is the country's low level of
start-up activity, Mike Anderson, Founder & CEO of the National Small
Business Chamber (NSBC), says that there are many mixed messages when
it comes to the state of South Africa entrepreneurship, but what
remains key is to continue working towards building a culture of
self-employment and sustainability.

"If we had to rely on the statistics alone, South Africa would not
build a small business community at all, instead it would rely on
multi-nationals to develop the economy. This is the polar opposite of
what we need as a nation. We need to create our own wealth and
entrepreneurship provides one of the main engines of growth in any
healthy economy," says Anderson.

Gearing up for My Business Expo in Cape Town, Anderson says that one
of the main challenges for current and aspiring entrepreneurs is
funding. "The GEM report says that of the 73% of adults that recognise
entrepreneurship as a good career choice, just 9,2% actually start
businesses. While there are many factors that can contribute to
business failure, funding is probably the most common."

He says that this year's My Business Expo features the 'Build a
Business LIVE' free seminars and he will be discussing how to start a
business with no money: "We need to start encouraging South Africans
to think beyond a job. If we can alter mindsets, address the
challenges and realise what is possible, small business development
will develop naturally."

Let the games begin with #Alcatel Go Play

Ten lucky Alcatel fans and two Alcatel university brand ambassadors
got to experience an extreme and exciting adventure with Alcatel this
past weekend at the Gotcha home paint ball arena in Menlyn, Pretoria.

Together with well known twelebs and felebs, the fans and amassadors
were eager to gear up and get started! The two teams (Go Play 1 and Go
Play 2) were debriefed on the rules, and ready to go.

It was game on, and every time a team member got hit, they had to
return to the safe house to fulfil a task such as unlocking an app,
taking a selfie or posting on social media. Once the task was
completed, the player could return to the game and continue playing.

The loyalists were encouraged to share their learnings after the game
and in return they won  shopping and airtime vouchers.

#Emira Property Fund @EmiraPropFund achieves 8.8% distribution growth

Emira Property Fund Limited today reported distribution growth of 8.8
% per share for its full-year ended 30 June 2016, meeting its market
guidance with a strong set of results for Emira investors.

Geoff Jennett, CEO of Emira Property Fund, attributes the solid
performance for 2016 to contractual escalations across most of its
portfolio, benchmark-surpassing occupancy levels, tight cost controls,
effective recycling of capital and Emira's strong balance sheet.

Besides posting inflation-beating total distribution growth to deliver
real returns, Emira closed the year with moderate gearing with a
loan-to-value ratio of 35.4% and 93.1% of its interest rate exposure
fixed.

What's more, income from Emira's listed investment in Growthpoint
Properties Australia (GOZ) grew 22% because of increased distributions
from GOZ, the lower dividend withholding tax and the ZAR depreciating
against the AUD.

Commenting on the results, Jennett says: "Emira's revenue increased by
5.6%, during the year because of the effect of past acquisitions as
well as organic portfolio growth. Besides top-line growth, we also
kept expenses contained and improved recoveries of municipal expenses.
In general, we've made good leasing progress and vacancy levels match
or better industry benchmarks."

millions of Rands?

UEFA Champions League trophy last season.

To dream is to dare.

Excessive Online use puts your immunity at risk

A new study hints that too much time online could put one's immunity
in jeopardy, increasing the risk of colds and flu by 30%.

The recently released research study, which was conducted by Swansea
and Milan Universities, found that those who spend in excess of four
hours a day online for personal use, (over and above work) reported
more cold and flu symptoms than those who spend less time online. The
study involved 500 men and women between the ages of 18 and 100.

Mariska van Aswegen, spokesperson for Pharma Dynamics – one of SA's
leading providers of colds and flu remedies – says SA's 24.9 million
internet users should take note.

"According to We are Social – an international social media and
marketing agency – South Africans already spend an average of five
hours a day online whether they're on a PC, laptop or tablet and on
top of that an additional three hours could be spent surfing the net
on their cellphones, which puts their immunity at even greater risk.

"Most internet addicts also have other bad habits that can suppress
their immune system and make them more susceptible to infection. These
include lack of sleep, eating too much junk food, not exercising
enough, and they tend to smoke and drink more alcohol compared to
those who are less concerned about being connected 24/7," she remarks.

In addition, the study found that those who are addicted to the
internet may experience even more stress when being unplugged from the
net, and that this cycle of stress and relief may lead to an increase
in cortisol levels.

"Cortisol is the stress hormone released by the adrenal glands, which
plays an important role in regulating the immune system," says van
Aswegen. "If you're experiencing a lot of stress – in this case as a
result of being disconnected from the web – your cortisol levels
remain elevated, which can lead to more regular infections, such as
colds and flu, chronic inflammation, allergies and even autoimmune
diseases."

Rediscover these 6 classic books with a bottle of red wine

It is not only good food and wine that make the perfect pairing, a
classic novel paired with an iconic red wine is a match made in
heaven.

Here are six classics to rediscover while enjoying Roodeberg, a 67
year-old blend steeped in history.

Just as these books were written by some of the greatest writers and
re-mastered by some of the greatest filmmakers the world has ever
seen, so has Roodeberg been skilfully blended and enjoyed the world
over.

1. The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald

The novel chronicles the 'Jazz Age' era, focused on bootlegging,
unscrupulous behaviour and the Prohibition era it's perfect for a cozy
winters evening to delve into the 1920's Fitzgerald world. This
classic was re-mastered into a film in 2013 by Baz Luhrman.

2. Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov

Made famous by its innovative style and infamous for its controversial
subject makes for a heavy read as the protagonist Humbert Humbert,
becomes obsessed and sexually involved with a twelve-year old girl
named Dolores Haze. The movie directed by Adrian Lyne became a classic
in 1997 when it was released onto the silver screen. A glass of wine
is needed to calm the nerves.

3. Great Expectations by Charles Dickens

This was Dickens thirteenth novel and his penultimate completed novel.
Takes you on a journey of personal growth and development of an orphan
nicknamed Pip. Set in Kent and London in the mid-19th century delves
into themes like: wealth, poverty, love, rejection and the triumph of
good over evil. Classically revived in film by the box office hit
directed by Mike Newell in 2013.

4. Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Caroll

Any novel that has been around since the 1800's and still being
adapted in modern times is a shining example of how influential the
characters and imagery from this story have been in popular culture.

A number of film adaptations have been produced but in 2010, Alice in
Wonderland directed by Tim Burton allowed people of all ages to
rediscover this classic and more recently this year with the movie
Alice Through the Looking Glass.

5. The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

This classic novel is the fourth-most translated book in the world and
was voted the best book of the 20th century in France. It is a poetic
tale about a pilot stranded in the desert meets a young prince fallen
to earth from a tiny asteroid. This charming tale was rediscovered as
a movie last year by director Mike Osborne who took this 1943 French
novel and turned it into a animated movie which became the most
successful French animated film abroad of all time.

6. The Stand by Stephen King

A post-apocalyptic horror fantasy novel originally published in 1978
and re-released in 1990 as a complete and uncut edition, considered
one of Kings finest works. A four-part miniseries was also released in
1994, which starred the writer himself in one of the lead roles.

The story takes you into the new world, the day after the world
'ends.' Either you choose, sides or are chosen. Grab a glass, light
the fire and settle in to meet some unnerving characters.

Growthpoint Gems helps young talent shine through educational grants

Quality education has a key role to play in South Africa's future
prosperity. Now, a new initiative by Growthpoint Properties aims to
ensure smart youngsters reach their full potential and are well
equipped for a better, brighter future.

Developed as part of Growthpoint Properties' corporate social
investment programme, Growthpoint Gems creates value for lower-earning
employees and their immediate families by providing educational grants
to their children at primary, secondary or tertiary level.

The carefully developed programme which was launched this month will
provide Growthpoint staff's families with the support they need for
their children to thrive with a great education, creating tomorrow's
leaders and opening doors that may otherwise have remained closed.

Norbert Sasse, CEO of Growthpoint Properties, says: "At Growthpoint,
we believe corporate social investment starts at home, in the
communities where our staff live and where our business has an impact.
By ensuring bursaries are made available for their children, we can
add value to the lives of our employees with Growthpoint Gems. It
recognises the importance of a good education, yet also considers the
challenges many families face because of the escalating costs of
schooling and tertiary education in South Africa."

Shawn Theunissen, Head of Corporate Social Responsibility for
Growthpoint explains that, through the programme, primary and
secondary school education bursaries will be awarded to learners from
Grade 4 and up. The bursaries will cover costs related to prescribed
school fees, uniforms, stationery and other learning materials. In
addition, life skills, vocational guidance and general support will be
provided where necessary to help learners on their path to success.

While one objective of the Growthpoint Gems initiative is to care for
people by helping families realise their dreams for their children,
another aim is to make a meaningful impact by nurturing education and
enabling young people to contribute to economic growth for a more
prosperous South Africa.

Growthpoint Gems' tertiary education bursaries will be awarded to
students who are currently in grade 12, those that have completed
their secondary schooling and those already at tertiary institutions
studying towards an undergraduate degree or National Diploma.

Importantly, tertiary bursaries are not limited to courses within the
property management and construction management disciplines, allowing
youngsters to follow their own dreams.

Running with wings on his heels - Wayde Van Niekerk gets Olympic Gold

It was a lineup that featured three of the fastest 400m athletes in
the past 10 years - Kirani James of Granada, LaShawn Merritt of USA
and the poster boy of South African athletics Wayde Van Niekerk.

Whoever was going to win had to make it special.

Running in the difficult lane eight, the 24 year old Van Niekerk
obliterated  Michael Johnson's 17 year old record on his way to
securing the Gold Medal.

It took just 43.03 seconds for the flag bearer to win SA's first gold
in Rio and become only the second South African to break an athletics
world record at the Olympic Games.

Even the great man himself, Usain Bolt, was one of the first to
congratulate him soon after his race. Bolt himself also having broken
Johnson's 200m world record.

Speaking at a press conference later, Bolt said: "It was brilliant.
From lane eight, the way he runs, I knew he was going to be brilliant.

"When he was training in Jamaica my coach said he's probably the only
guy in the world right now who can break this 400m world record. He's
got speed and strength and he came out here and proved him right.

"I'm very happy for him. I'm really proud of him. He did extremely well."

Well done Van Niekerk.
