Gift Ngoepe makes history as the first African to play in the #MLB

Baseball, baseball, baseball!

The sport has gradually grown throughout Africa and on Wednesday evening, history was made at the PNC Park in Pittsburgh when Gift Ngoepe became the first African to play in the Major League Baseball.

The Polokwane born hard hitter played a staring role in the Pirates 6-5 win over the Chicago Cubs

"We finally have someone from Africa that made it to the big league. Representing my country and continent and them pushing me every single day is awesome support and love from them," Ngoepe told MLB.com just after the match.

Ngoepe began playing the sport aged three and has previously played for South Africa at the 2009 World Baseball Classic.

While budding soccer players across the continent look up to the likes of Riyad Mahrez, Yaya Toure and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for inspiration, baseball hopefuls have a new light to look at.

5 reasons to buy life insurance while you're still a young adult

You're under 30 years old, you don't have any children yet and you're in prime physical health. You might think that you don't need life insurance yet, but the truth is that there is no better time to invest in life cover than when you're young.

Taking a life insurance policy early in your life is a step towards responsible financial planning and a great investment in your future and your legacy, says Bryan McLachlan, Managing Director of Absa Instant Life. What's more, it's easier than ever to go online and buy affordable cover in 15 minutes, with no fuss and no medical checkups.

He offers five reasons why millennials should think about buying life cover:

1.       A policy costs less when you're young and healthy
When you buy insurance at a young age, your insurer will see you as a low-risk client and offer you a lower premium. You'll benefit from that lower premium for the 20-year duration of the policy, meaning that you'll already be affordably covered by the time you buy a house or have children.

2.       You can get something back if you don't claim
Many life insurers pay back a proportion of your premiums at the end of a specified period or at the end of the duration of the policy. Absa Instant Life, for example, pays back up to 20% of your premium every 10 years if you don't claim. This can be a nice windfall to contribute to your bond repayment or your children's education.

3.       Leave a legacy for the people you love
Even if you don't have children, you may have someone in your life who depends on your income. Perhaps you have bought a house with a long-term partner or a spouse. If something happens to you, their financial future will be assured.

4.       Take care of your debts
Depending on your circumstances, your family might have signed surety for debts such as your vehicle repayment, your bond or your student loan. A life policy can take care of these debts, leaving them with one less thing to worry about.

5.       Many life policies also offer cover for disability or critical illness
One of the best reasons for young people to buy life cover is to provide for themselves if they are unable to work as a result of a critical illness or accidental disability. Work Disability Cover will work for you when you are unable to work and provide for yourself. It will ensure you and your dependants can maintain your lifestyle if you become disabled or ill.

R7 500 to meet #Quantico star Priyanka Chopra in Jo'burg

Ever since Pearl Thusi won a gig on Quantico, the show has made itself a darling in many South African homes.

Great news is that Priyanka Chopra is coming to Johannesburg, and will "meet and greet" guests paying R7 500 for the privilege.

All this of course will be done for charity as it is part of the first fundraising gala of the UN Children's Fund in South Africa.

The fund says the event on Saturday next week at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Rosebank "is a VIP event that will help catalyse further investments for children in need".

As the main guest, Chopra will be joined by TV personality Jo-Ann Strauss and performer Zakes Bantwini. Four tables of 10‚ at R75 000 each‚ have been reserved. Another is available at R50 000. The organisation's spokesman, Sandra Bisin, said the dinner and Chopra's visit would highlight the fund's global "Ending Violence Against Children" campaign.

So there you have it! This is your chance to meet the actress while also doing some goodwill for charity.

R&B sensation Ayanda Jiya has big plans for 2017

The South African R&B scene has constantly been overshadowed by the local hip hop culture that seems to be producing new artistes everyday. There is no doubt about that!

While hip hop is getting all the attention, let's not forget the R&B wonders. One of these sensations is Ayanda Jiya.

With an incredible song such as Go Go Girl under her belt- the sky is definitely the limit for her. But she has even bigger plans for the year.

"R&B is not dead in South Africa. By releasing Go Go Girl, I wanted to prove that the genre is still alive. As a musician you can not be complacent. You have to grow and for you to grow you need to evolve and experiment," she said in an interview with Sunday World.

The 20 year old not only sings but she also owns her own record company - Ayandastand music.

"I want to get to a point where I am very happy with all that I have achieved in the industry. And I would like the opportunity to create and write music for other musicians," she stated.

Jiya is going to be releasing an album in August. Serenade us again girl, serenade us!

#RhythmCity's Reneilwe talks about her love for the character

There is no doubting that Rhythm City is one of the most loved and followed soapie in Mzansi. Errrrh did I say Mzansi alone? I meant internationally! Who can forget how global billionaire Bill Gates spoke out about his love for the show.

Anyway one of the Rhythm City stars Amo Chidi (who plays the role of songstress Reneilwe) has spoken out about her love for the character. In an interview with Sunday World, Chidi said that she was at home playing Reneilwe because of her love for music.

"I'm at home with anything that has to do with music. That's the reason I'm enjoying the space I'm at on Rhythm City at the moment," she said.

The 27 year old Amo graduated in music theatre at Tshwane University of Technology. She went on to state that playing Reneilwe was even exciting as the character was climbing a new ladder in her life.

"Rene is a goal better. Just like me in real life, she is passionate about music and she never let's setbacks get the better of her. When faced with setbacks, she punches and overcomes," she said.

Hmmmm we all wonder whether Reneilwe is going to seriously choose between Sifiso's pipeline 'studio' dream over the established Red Records. Be sure not to miss all the action as it unfolds weekdays from 7pm on e.TV.

#bizhub Highveld Lions launch Sleep Out

The 26th of April 2017 marks the launch of the first-ever Lions Sleep-out at the Bidvest Wanderers stadium in Illovo, which will see the bizhub Highveld Lions cricket team and its partners, namely Hirsch's Homeware,  Konica Minolta, Sun International, Cricket South Africa, Circa, Megaview, Imperial Toyota, Dairymaid, Coca Cola Beverages South Africa and Market Caterers arranging a sleep-out at the Bullring, with a 100 young aspiring cricket players from the Gauteng Cricket Board (GCB) amateur cricket development programme.

The GCB have done incredible work in developing the tremendous potential in their pipeline system, of which some unfortunately come from disadvantaged backgrounds.  The bizhub Highveld Lions are supporting these endeavours by arranging this sleep-out and giving these youngsters a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Subsequently, a partnership was formed with the various stakeholders for the event.

The aim of the Lions Sleepover has its sights firmly set on supporting the redefining of cricket development in South Africa and enabling the next generation of future stars to access meaningful opportunities and to pursue professional careers. The event will include interactive coaching clinics, workshops and activities to work at inspiring the young cricketers to keep on working to achieve their cricketing dreams.

"As a company, we are conscious of our need to build and maintain a credible profile as responsible corporate citizens. That is why we are committed to supplying a 100 beds for the sleepover," says Allan Hirsch of Hirsch's Homestore. "Our aim is to support and uplift these young players and it will start off with a good night's sleep,'' he further added. " In this way, I'm hoping that it will teach and inspire them. I'm looking forward to being part of the night, and watching them grow from strength to strength beyond the sleepover," Hirsch concluded.

Its Official! Study finds that drinking alcohol makes you eat more

Its happened to all of us – starting a dinner party with a glass of wine means, inevitably, ending it with a huge dessert and most of the cheeseboard.

Scientists have found that alcohol really does make you hungrier.

However, according to the British study led by London's Francis Crick Institute, the alcohol fires up neurons in the brain normally activated by starvation.

The researchers found the ethanol in alcoholic drinks activated so-called Agrp neurons in brain slices taken from mice.

These neurons are "normally activated by starvation and evoke intense hunger".

The study, published in the journal Nature Communications, states: "Drinking an aperitif to stimulate appetite has been mentioned as a human practice since at least the 5th century AD. Modern studies confirm that alcohol intake acutely stimulates eating, and correlates with obesity."

Responding to the findings, Dr Tony Goldstone, from the Faculty of Medicine at Imperial College, London, said: "It was also previously thought that drinking alcohol could simply inhibit your ability to say no to food.

"This study shows that an important starvation pathway in the brain is activated by alcohol.

"This is a paradoxical effect even when someone is not starving and has just consumed alcohol which contains calories."

The test was an "alcoholic weekend" test, where mice were given alcohol at doses that are the equivalent of about 18 units or three days. This led to an increase in food intake of 15 to 20%. – Daily Mail

The battle of Spain is on! Simply call it #ElClasico

Many pundits have hinted that whoever wins tonights titanium El Clasico battle should start cleaning up their trophy cabinet as they will surely bag the La Liga crown. Call it optimism at its best but this will be one huge battle that's different from many El Clasico's for a number of reasons.

In the context of this week's events, the massive Real Madrid and Barcelona encounter at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium should be one of the victorious versus the humiliated; the confident versus the frustrated; the leaders versus the followers; and the European record-setters versus the onlookers.

But none of that will count when the 233rd edition of El Clasico is played in Madrid on Sunday. When the two sides take to the field, history and current form will be merely academic. The sides will be equal and the ancient rivalry will be raw.

The thing about El Clasico is that it is never boring. Many other derbies – including our own Soweto derby – have their off days and do not live up to the hype.

Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric has revealed that he hopes to be able to "console" Barcelona's Ivan Rakitic after the game.

The second El Clasico of the 2016-17 campaign will take place in the Spanish capital on Sunday night as La Liga leaders Real Madrid welcome second-place Barcelona, who are three points off the pace in the table.

Victory for Real Madrid would place Los Blancos in a very strong position in Spain's top flight, and Modric is hoping to get one over on his fellow Croatian international Rakitic this weekend.

If you are not among the more than 500 million human beings watching Sunday evening's game, you are wasting our precious oxygen.

Why its very important to keep a clean credit record

Most people know that the way they manage their credit is tracked, but don't realise the role a credit record will play in their future financial wellbeing.

"A credit record is the documentation detailing payment history of current and previous debt," says Nico van Staden, Head of Credit at FNB Credit Card. "Credit providers, including banks, retailers and personal loan companies are required by law to submit information on your credit repayments to the credit bureaus," adds van Staden.

On a monthly basis a credit provider will supply the bureaus with detailed information on your loans. This includes what date you opened the loan, amount borrowed, outstanding amount and monthly instalment. Details such as frequency of payments, any missed payments, overdue accounts or judgements against you are also reflected in your profile.

So why is a credit record so important to you?

The information on your credit record is used by service providers to assess your affordability and risk profile. Any missed payments reflect on your credit profile. For example, if you miss payment and catch up the following month, the missed payment will be recorded at the bureau and stored for 24 months. The bureau record will show that you are up to date but missed payment the previous month.

"A credit record that shows you manage your loans badly, by frequently paying late, missing repayments or have any judgements against your name will make it difficult to get credit. In addition, this can impact the interest rate you pay on new credit as you will be considered high risk," says van Staden.

A bad credit record can potentially compromise access to finance for important life events such as access to a home loan, car finance or personal loan. Furthermore, if your child needs a study loan, this could be a problem as the parents credit record is taken into account.

How to keep your credit record healthy

Make sure that you have a solid budget in place and carefully monitor your spending habit. Also avoid taking credit for unnecessary expenses.

You are allowed to access your credit record profile for free once a year, take advantage of this. This is a good exercise to see if there are any defaults or judgments listed against your name, or if there is any incorrectly listed information on your profile.

Have a debit order loaded on your account for repayments.  This is the easiest way to ensure that you don't miss a repayment. Avoid reversing legitimate debit order on your account when you are financially strained as this will reflect on the bureau.

What to do if you have a poor credit record

Firstly, try to catch up on any payments where you are in arrears. This will mean changing your spending habits in order to achieve the end goal.

"Speak to your bank or credit provider if you are not managing, they may be able to help restructure your repayments," says van Staden.

Once you have caught up on your arrears, you will need to start paying back the short term credit facilities that you have such as credit card, store cards or personal loans. Start with the loan with the highest interest rate and do not be tempted to take out more credit once that loan has been paidoff .

R2 million dangling on #TwoOceans marathon records

Does winning R2 million for breaking a record excite you? Hmmm if only it was that easy to win it hey.

Well if you are a seasoned marathon runner or you just want to take your chances anyway, R2-million is on offer this weekend at the Two Oceans Marathon.

The huge bonus is up for grabs to a male or female runner who break either the men's and women's records on Saturday.

Since the prize was first announced in 2014 it has not been won on race day. The money, from headline sponsor Old Mutual, has caused conflict among competitors and coaches, who say it is unattainable.

"We tell our runners not to go for the record and, to be honest, they don't want the risk. You could throw your win away by going out too hard and ending up with nothing left near the finish," Nedbank national manager Nick Bester said.

Well I will be watching the race unfold on my telly and hopefully someone can bag that money. All the best to all the athletes.

New #Twitter Lite is light on data

Twitter has launched a faster version of its mobile service aimed at people with sporadic connections or little data on their smartphone plans, hoping to attract users in harder-to-reach emerging markets.

The company calls the version Twitter Lite, and it is aimed largely at users outside the US.

Twitter Lite works through a web browser, not a stand-alone phone application, but its appearance and functionality are nearly identical to what app users experience.

The launch comes on the heels of similar products from other US tech companies. Facebook released Facebook Lite in 2015, and, earlier this week, Alphabet's YouTube unveiled a low-data mobile app designed for India.

Twitter lags those companies in building a user base. It had 319 million average monthly active users at the end of last year, up 4% year on year but still a fraction of Facebook's 1.9 billion users. A primary reason in some parts of the world was how much data its app and earlier website consumed, said Keith Coleman, Twitter's vice-president of product.

"We didn't feel like we were reaching these other countries well enough, and this will allow us to do it faster, cheaper and with a better experience than we've had before."

Like YouTube, Twitter is eyeing India's 1.3 billion people, and it timed the release of Twitter Lite in part to coincide with the start this week of the Indian Premier League's Twenty20 tournament. —

Masasa Mbangeni returns to #etv in new drama series

Let's admit it, Scandal! is no longer the same without award winning actress Masasa Mbangeni who played the role of Thembeka.

The devious Thembeka, who went out of her way to get what she wanted, injected so much suspense, thrill and drama into the soapie.

Great news is that Masasa is making a huge comeback to e.tv. Not on Scandal! this time but on a new drama series that also stars Petronella Tshuma, Khanya Mkangisa, Muzi Mathebula and Vatiswa Ndara

Cheekly titled 'Harvest', the explosive drama series, follows the story of three women, Celia, Clementine and Tshepiso who are forced to take over an illegal business when their husbands are tragically murdered. The wives (now Widows) have to continue running the illegal business, which is under the guise of a global frozen foods empire.

Harvest answers the question: "Why do we make the choices that we make?" by focusing on the real trials and tribulations of women fighting for recognition in the high-stakes business world as mothers, lovers, sisters and bosses.

Harvest premieres on Monday, 1 May at 9:30PM on e.tv and eHD on OpenView HD

We cant wait to see what Masasa has lined up her sleeves... Tick tick tock!

British DJ to break world record by performing on Mount Everest

Influential British DJ Paul Oakenfold has reached Mount Everest's base camp where he plans to host the "highest party on earth", performing a set at 5,380 metres.

As climbing season in Nepal kicks into gear, few of the mountaineers heading to the world's highest peak were likely expecting to be joined by the three-time Grammy nominated artist and his dance beats.

Oakenfold - whose three-decade long career has included collaborations with Madonna and U2 – is due to perform a set at base camp on Tuesday morning.

"We are here now doing sound checks. We are really looking forward to the show tomorrow. Everyone is really excited here," Oakenfold told AFP by phone from base camp on Monday.

The 53-year-old artist said he had no trekking experience before he set out on the 10-day walk to Everest with a team of yaks and porters hauling the audio equipment needed for the event.

Oakenfold trained for four months before arriving in Nepal in between a hectic schedule of late night gigs, he said.

"I'm not going to pretend it was easy to get here... but it has been a wonderful trek. If you could see the view I'm looking at, it is very inspiring," he said.

The world's highest peak will provide a very different kind of high to Oakenfold's usual shows, which often draw thousands of revellers.

"The audience will probably be sitting mostly. The air is so thin here, you will run out of breath quite quickly," said Ranzen Jha, a Nepali DJ accompanying Oakenfold.

The gig is the first in the record producer's SoundTrek series, aimed at drawing attention to the effects of global warming and raising money for charities.

Oakenfold is also raising funds to help survivors of Nepal's devastating 2015 earthquake, which killed nearly 9,000 people and left thousands homeless, many of whom are still living in temporary shelters.

"I want to support in the rebuilding and to shed light on the environment... I would like to do my bit," he said.

But not everyone is keen on the idea, with some complaining that the renowned DJ is disturbing the peace and tranquility of the Himalayas.

#Panasonic donates solar lanterns

Since 2012, Panasonic Corporation has been working on the 100 Thousand Solar Lanterns Project, a project that aims to donate a total of 100 thousand solar lanterns to the world's non-electrified areas by 2018, which is the cenetennial of Panasonic's foundation.

As part of the effort, the company donated a total of 1,584 solar lanterns for the first time to three nonprofit organizations (NGOs) working in the three countries of the Republic of South Africa, Kingdom of Swaziland, and Kingdom of Lesotho.

On the 27th March 2017, a donation ceremony was held at the Nelson Mandela Foundation in South Africa.

The donation ceremony, held by the Nelson Mandela Foundation in South Africa, was attended by government officials from the Republic of South Africa and Shigeyuki Hiroki, Ambassador of Japan in the Republic of South Africa.

At present, approximately 1.2 billion people are living in areas without electricity, which accounts for about 16% of the world population, of which approximately 600 million people are in African countries.

Although many households in these areas without electricity use kerosene lamps for lighting, its smoke poses a health hazard and exposes people to the risk of fire.

By utilizing solar lanterns, children will be able to learn safely and women's groups can engage in activities that create income at night in the community, which will help them

100 Thousand Solar Lanterns Project has achieved over 80,000 donations in total to improve their lives and help a sustainable society.

Moreover, this reduces the economic burden of fuel purchase costs. In order to contribute to resolving these social issues, Panasonic has been promoting corporate social responsibility (corporate citizenship activities) by proactively using the company's core technologies and products, and as part of this, has been implementing the 100 Thousand Solar Lanterns Project.

Broken Vows is on tonight

Celebs braved the late night chill and rain on Friday and headed to the Four Seasons Hotel at The Westcliff for a screening of a new telenovela making its way to e.tv tonight.

It's no secret the 8pm slot is the most hotly contested in the world of telenovelas in the South African television market, and e.tv has seemingly joined in to stake their claim. They first started with Ashes to Ashes that aired for two seasons, then Gold Diggers of which the finale was on Friday, also after two seasons. Now they are bringing in a new drama series – Broken Vows.

The series is set against the backdrop of a family-owned wedding planning company, called Yours Truly Wedding Concepts based in Midrand.

The first episode is filled with laughter, intrigue and suspense all at once, and will surely keep viewers on the edge of their seats. The cast boasts veteran actresses Nomsa Nene, Charleen- Surtie Richards, who dazzled in red evening gowns, and Thembi Mtshali-Jones.

The cast were all seated at one table, instantly turning it into a place of envy for the night. They cheered and shared inside jokes, especially when they saw themselves on the screen. Actor Sello Sebotsane particularly looked closer when his scene appeared on the screen, and gave off that approving smirk.

These cheers happened during the screening, and actor Thapelo Mokoena had to explain that they have not seen the whole episode, and it was their first time as well. He together with Nambitha Ben-Mazwi, Enhle Mbali-Maphumulo and Joanne Reyneke, among others, complete the cast.

#Woolworth's Chief Executive wins Woman of the Year Award

Woolworth's chief executive Zyda Rylands this week won the inaugural Woman of the Year award at the World Retail Congress' International Women in Retail Reception.

The company said Rylands was given the special award as recognition of her inspirational work both as an international leader philanthropist and for her outstanding commercial success.

Rylands on Friday said she was honoured to be the inaugural recipient of the award.

According to Woolworths, Rylands joined the company in 1996. The company says she was appointed director of people and transformation in 2005, before becoming a chief operations officer a year later.

In 2015, Rylands was appointed to her current position.

"I love retail. It's in my blood. I, like everyone at the World Retail Congress, continue to be inspired and excited by the constantly changing retail landscape, the amazing variety of trends and innovation in our industry and the passion and dedication of the people who work tirelessly to keep giving our customers the best. I feel privileged to be part of Woolworths, and lead the people who work there – our people keep making a difference and are what really makes it such an incredible place to work and shop." Rylands said.

Woolworths is listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange.

In February, Woolworth reported its group sales had increased 6.7 percent to R37.8 billion despite a subdued consumer climate that has been characterised by low spending.

Profit before tax increased 37.9 percent while clothing and general merchandise sales grew by 3.5 percent.

Researchers create a #Smartphone screen that can repair itself

The days of scratched and cracked smartphone screens may be numbered: researchers have created a screen that can repair itself.

Researchers at the University of California Riverside have designed a new polymer that could eventually fuse cracks and paper over scratches.

The material can stretch up to 50 times its original size, which means that scratches don't have to be permanent. When completely cracked, it can also stitch itself back together again within 24 hours.

"A self-healing material, when carved in two parts, can go back together like nothing has happened, just like human skin," said Chao Wang, the researcher behind the creation.

Some phones are already fitted with similar technology on the back covers, such as the LG G Flex.

But Wang's attempt marks the first instance of a regenerating material that can conduct electricity, meaning it could be used for phone screens. Most phones have electrodes on the screen, which transmit taps and swipes to the phone.

It also fares better in varied environments such as humid places compared with previous versions, according to Wang.

He hopes the polymer will be available on cellphone screens by 2020.

Oude Meester Demant scoops Worlds Best Brandy award #OudeMeester

South African brandies made a clean sweep at the 2017 World Drinks Awards, claiming gold medals as well as the ultimate title of World's Best Brandy for the Oude Meester Demant.

Now in its tenth year, the World Drinks Awards is hosted in London by TheDrinksReport.com to recognize spirit drinks and select the very best in all internationally recognized styles.

"With an ideal climate and a history of brandy production stretching back over 300 hundred years, it comes as no surprise that South Africa is widely regarded among the world's best brandy producing countries," says Distell Brandy Ambassador, Nick Holdcroft. "It's fair to say our brandies compete on a par with the world's most recognized cognacs, and South Africans can be rightfully proud of our reputation as a global leader in terms of quality."

This is the second consecutive year that a South African Brandy has defended its claim for producing the world's best brandy - Klipdrift Premium walked away with top honours in 2016.

"Each award-winning bottle of Oude Meester Demant comprises a sublime blend of potstill brandies that have matured in French oak casks," explains Holdcroft. "The alluring nose of dark chocolate, nutmeg and slightly fruity notes of notes of dried apricot and pineapple, leads to an exquisitely balanced palate with hints of oak and delicate spice that softly finish with a lingering smoothness. It's not surprising it won this award."

Oude Meester also took the award for best extra old brandy with their 12 year old Reserve. An extra old brandy is one that is aged ten years or older.

The judging panel comprises a cast of highly respected and experienced authorities from the drinks and hospitality industry, who adjudicate hundreds of international submissions, scoring merit on nose, palate, finish, balance, character and quality.

Dineo Ranaka takes The Front Row

Dineo Ranaka has joined Metro FM and the screen goddess is going to be part of the Front Row crew.

Dineo's appointment comes less than 24 hours since Bonang resigned from the station. Despite insiders claiming that Bonang resigned after being informed about co-hosting with Lerato Kganyago, B rubbished the claims. Bonang told TshisaLIVE that she left "on principle" and that she was only notified about the changes an hour before she went on air.

"It could have been anybody else in that chair. It could have been male, female, a famous person or a non-famous person. It was principle that mattered to me," she said.

Dineo stepped into the role only hours after Bonang announced that she had resigned from the station. She started her first show as co-host with Lerato Kganyago on Tuesday morning.

Speaking to TshisaLIVE, SABC spokesperson Kazier Kganyago confirmed that Dineo had joined Metro FM and said that the station did all it could to replace Bonang with someone of a similar quality.

Speaking on the show, she said: "It was a conversation with Metro FM in the afternoon yesterday, and a conversation with Metro FM in the evening yesterday, and then a conversation with you [Lerato] in the evening, followed by a conversation with God later on in the evening, and now conversations with the rest of the country."

Avoid online travel scams this #Easter

Consumers who are travelling or have not yet finalised their arrangements for the upcoming Easter holidays should be wary of fraudsters who target people who are desperate to secure travel and accommodation at the last minute.

Sahil Mungar, FNB Digital Banking says, "If you have or haven't yet booked your travel and accommodation, not only are you likely to pay a premium, but you could also fall victim to some online scams."

"Fraudsters exploit potential holiday makers by falsely advertising holiday accommodation or timeshares on the internet and social media. Consumers are then deceived to pay upfront in order to secure their bookings. This further gives scammers an opportunity to request ID copies and bank details of their victims, which are then used for identity theft," adds Mungar.

When consumers become desperate to secure holiday travel and accommodation, they can easily overlook scams due to the pressure, only to find out that they've been defrauded when they get to the venue.

Mungar advises consumers to be extra cautious when booking accommodation online ahead of the Easter holidays.

 - Always try and book accommodation three months in advance or longer to avoid disappointments. This will help you to qualify for discounts and gives you enough time to do the necessary background and security checks.

- Use search engines like Google. If you're worried about a property or suspect that the photographs are fake, simply look it up yourself online.  Look for reviews from other travelers and Google Maps to ensure that the place exists.

- Use websites like tripadvisor.com, booking.com and similar websites to check reviews and to book accommodation securely. Generally these websites guarantee the booking.

- Call directly to publicly advertised phone numbers to confirm the booking availability. Even if you get called, rather hang up and call back on the official number.

- Avoid depositing or transferring money to an individual's bank account or sending your personal details to their private email address. Rather pay online on the accommodation's actual website or in person at the venue.

- Lookout for suspicious behavior. Take notice of bad grammar in emails, foreign phone numbers, or if the owner or property manager is not responding to emails. These can all be warning signs.

- If you have friends and family that stay close to the place, ask them to go and verify if it is legitimate.

#KWV named as World Class Distiller at the World Spirits Awards in Germany

KWV in Paarl, arguably South Africa's single most awarded wine brand, is adding another international accolade to its list of achievements – 'World Class Distiller' – as announced at the recently concluded World Spirits Award in Germany.

With a mission to set a benchmark in the world of spirits, the World Spirits Award attracts entries from distillers across the globe who submit their products to be adjudicated by a strict 'jury' of expert tasters. This year, a total of 95 participants and distilleries from 25 nations participated in the competition, with 400 spirits submitted for consideration. Spirits are rated according to the 100-point system, and "simply the best in spirits" receive top marks.

KWV, with its portfolio of spirits which include highly-awarded Cognac, Brandy and Gin, was the only South African distilling company who collected enough awards to be included in the list of 'World Class Distillers'. In addition to this recognition, KWV also received a Double Gold for its KWV 12-year-old Brandy – one of only 44 Double Golds awarded during the competition.

The KWV 12-year-old is a signature KWV Brandy, which was scored 95,3/100 by the judges, and was one in a line-up of aged KWV Brandies that successfully played into a noted trend at the World Spirits Awards: organisers reflected that "in the 100% distillate category it is noticeable that many products already have quite a few years of maturity under their belts and can thus already present themselves at their best - it's not always good to be 'young'."

KWV 12-year-old impressed with its "brilliant style and aromatic and perfumed nose… and delicate brandy character (with) aromatic grape, roasty notes, subtle rum ester, ligtht toffee, sponge, nut and nougat chocolate, honey, peach, leather, coffee, plump and yeasty sweetness, balanced (by a) compact (and) long finish"

Further to this Double Gold award, KWV also took home Gold for the KWV 20-year-old, KWV 15-year-old, KWV 10-year-old, Imoya Brandy, Heritage Cognac and its Cruxland Gin as well as Silver for its Laborie Alambic Brandy.

Says Anneke Mackenzie, Global Portfolio Manager of Spirits at KWV: "These results are noteworthy as they acknowledge and award, not one, but three, of KWV's distilling sectors – Cognac, Brandy and Gin –indicating that the Spirits Production team really are treating the products with the craftsmanship needed to achieve extraordinary new heights in these categories. We are very pleased – and know the public will be too!"

How to keep your skin radiant

Beauty is a multi-billion dollar global industry that is constantly evolving and providing women with the latest innovation to look and feel their best.

Kateko Ramoshaba, from body skincare experts Clere, says that keeping your skin healthy and beautiful does not always mean having to spend large sums of money on the latest skincare products.

"There are many simple, affordable and easy elements that you can add to your health and skincare routines that will work towards a beautiful looking skin." Ramoshaba shares her five tips:

- Taking care of your skin from the inside out is very important and the first step is to ensure that you are well hydrated! Make sure that you are drinking sufficient water throughout the day.

- Exfoliate regularly, ideally twice a week, so as to remove dead skin cells from your body and leave your skin prepared and ready to absorb body lotion.  Creating your own body scrub is cost effective and you can make it to suit your skin concerns, by adding one the following to your body lotion or crème.  Salt will help to relax your muscles, sugar is gentler on the skin, ground coffee has the benefit of caffeine constricting blood vessels and oatmeal is the gentlest exfoliator softening and hydrating the skin.  Including your favourite essential oils can help to relax, soothe or energise.  Once finished applying rinse off in the shower.

- Avoid baths that are too hot as this can dry out your skin.

- Apply a nourishing body lotion, ideally to your slightly damp skin.  Clere Hand & Body Lotions provide 24 hour moisturise as they are enriched with Vitamins E & A and Glycerine.

- Lastly, sleep is vital.  It's called "beauty sleep" for a reason! When you sleep your body has time to repair and recover.  Not only will you wake with a glowing complexion but you also help your body to generate collagen, which helps fight wrinkles.

Ramoshaba says that the fountain of youth may never be found, but by implementing these tips into your routine, you will help you skin to look youthful and feel beautiful.

The making of #Tokara five year old potstill brandy

Tasting Notes

Slow French oak maturation added the distinctive characteristics of the TOKARA Potstill Brandy. The mellowed spirit abounds with subtle complex flavours of dried fig, peach and raisin fruits, pot-pourri floral aroma and heady jasmine, orange blossom and vanilla notes with spicy pepper and saffron overtones. Innovative final blending enhanced the balance and synergy of the subtle flavours to create a distinctive spirit with fine length and depth of aftertaste.

Blend Information

100% Chenin Blanc

In The Vineyard

Base wine was made from Chenin Blanc grapes sourced from Stellenbosch vineyards, picked in January 2006 at a ripeness of 18° Balling.

In The Cellar

The juice was pressed off and fermented at 18° Celsius with selected yeast. The base wine, though high in acid, had a citrus character with concentrated fruit, aromas of pear, pineapple and green apple.

The wine was kept on the lees at 0° Celsius in stainless steel tanks for three months with regular lees stirring. Distillation by hand commenced in June 2006.

The traditional double distillation process was used with separating cuts and retaining only the heart fraction. The resultant spirit was 72% alc volume and was filled into 300lt French oak barrels of which approximately 33% was new Limousin oak and the rest being twenty-year-old brandy barrels.

The brandy was left to rest and mature for 6 years. Prior to bottling in 2012, final blending took place and the brandy strength was adjusted to 40% alc volume.

#Zapper mobile payment app reaches one million downloads

When planning to introduce any new app technology to an already saturated market, there are three all-important characteristics required to ensure success. It must be fresh, innovative and life-changing.

If the numbers are anything to go by, the Zapper mobile payment app is all that and more.

Earlier this week Zapper celebrated a momentous milestone by achieving one million downloads.

These landmark achievements come just three short years after Zapper and it's 'scan to pay' QR codes made their entrance onto the South African restaurant circuit. Since then, Zapper has experienced significant growth.

Through smart and strategic expansion across verticals that include hospitality, retail, ecommerce, bills, fuel and convenience, and donations, the award-winning app has steadily exceeded industry benchmarks, revolutionising payment technology and certifying its position as more than just a smartphone payment method.

Today, it stands as a lifestyle application with one million downloads and one million reasons to be proud of its accomplishment.

"This is a proud moment for Zapper. Over the last few years we have endeavoured to build a product that would impact the mobile payments arena and drive innovation forward," said Will Heygate, General Manager for Zapper South Africa.

Where many great apps have met with scorching hot fanfare, only to lose public interest and fade into obscurity in the months following their release, Zapper has built a noteworthy presence in fourteen countries around the world, including the UK, Spain and the tough-to-crack US market.

Zapper is currently available for free download on the app stores for iPhone, Android, and Windows phones.
