Nambitha Ben-Mazwi to empower artists with business skills #SheSpeaks

Port Elizabeth actress Nambitha Ben-Mazwi, whose talent has been seen on stages in New York and in many SA productions, is returning to her hometown to give a workshop on the business of the arts on February 22.

With Port Elizabeth a breeding ground for artistic talent, it is important to nurture and open doors for Bay artists, Ben-Mazwi said.

She said that knowledge of the business aspect of the entertainment industry was equally important, hence the workshop.

The workshop is the year's first instalment of Ben-Mazwi's #SheSpeaks series of talks, a women empowerment initiative she started in August.

However, the workshop is open to all genders.

"Yes, most of my followers are women and that's why I developed the #SheSpeaks concept but I have found that there are also a lot of men who are interested in this [topic] so I'm going to be speaking to men too because I don't want to marginalise anyone," BenMazwi said.

Ben-Mazwi has a business science honours degree and experience in the corporate world.

She had noted that many people in the entertainment industry were not well-versed in the business side of things.

Her aim is to use the workshop to equip aspiring and upcoming Port Elizabeth artists with the necessary knowledge to succeed in the entertainment industry.

"I know Port Elizabeth has a lot of talent but not everyone gets to where they deserve to be, so a lot of these aspirations that PE artists have, seem unattainable because opportunities are not within reach," she said.

"I want everyone — whether it be a presenter, actor or actress — to find their voice in the arts and entertainment industry, to figure out their purpose and how to go about pursuing it because I know sometimes our biggest problem can be knowing what you want to do, but not knowing how to start."

Having initially pursued a corporate career in New York, Ben-Mazwi later felt she belonged in the arts sector and quit the corporate world.

She bagged a role in the

Netflix hit remake of Black Mirror and the international BET production of Madiba.

Following her return to SA in 2013, she has been in various productions including e.tv's Broken Vows, Mzansi Magic drama Doubt and SABC3 breakfast show The Weekend Edition.

Ben-Mazwi's face can now be seen in three productions — SABC 1's Diamond City and Mzansi Magic's GrassRoots and The Queen.

Ben-Mazwi's Business of the Arts industry workshop will be held at the Boardwalk Hotel from 1pm to 6pm on February 22.

Port Elizabeth SABC 3 Presenter Search finalist Thato Moshoeshoe will MC the event.

Tickets cost R250 until February 1 and R300 thereafter.

Miss World donates school shoes to children of Mzansi

Reigning Miss World, Toni-Ann Singh, was recently in South Africa as a special guest of Chief Mandla Mandela. Nelson Mandela's eldest grandson celebrated his mother's 70th birthday in Mvezo.

Singh donated 1300 pairs of shoes as part of "Beauty With A Purpose" support of local schools and children.

The 23-year-old arrived in Mthatha,

Eastern Cape, and before the birthday celebrations was given a personal tour of the Nelson Mandela museum.

Singh said it was an honour to learn about the late icon.

"Legacy is the word of the day. What an honour and a privilege it was to learn more about the mark Nelson Mandela has left on our world. He fought for freedom, love, and unity. The spirit of Madiba lives on, not only in his grandson, but in all of us."

Following the tour, Miss World was a guest at the birthday celebration of Rose Rayne Mandela-Perry.

During the celebration, Singh, who is a singer, performed a "very emotional" happy birthday in front of all the invited guests.

Candice Modiselle bags new gig

Actress and presenter Candice Modiselle is the official host of Mzansi Magic's new fashion design competition show, Style Squad.

The show, which airs on Thursdays at 6.30pm and repeats Saturdays at 10.30am on DStv channel 161, features 10 young budding fashion designers from across South Africa battling it out for the chance of designing their own clothing range for Ackermans.

Sharing her thoughts on the show, Candice said, "Shooting Style Squad was truly such a rewarding experience.

"It's beautiful to see how fearless young creatives are and further reminds me of how unapologetic I used to be before I let the world's opinions inform what my art looks and sounds like."

Each week participants compete against each other by completing various design-related activities, that will test their creativity and fashion knowledge.

The top 2 designers (one male, one female) will design their own ranges, under the guidance of leading industry buyers and trends specialists, which will then go to retail at Ackermans stores nationwide later this year.

Candice announced the news on her Instagram account: "New year, new chapter… it's only fitting that there's a NEW SHOW!!!

"In Style Squad, powered by Ackermans, 10 of South Africa's youngest budding fashion designers showcase their talent through a range of challenges.

"Each of them stand a chance of winning the ultimate grand prize – their own range in Ackermans stores across Southern Africa.

"Can't wait for you to meet these fashion geniuses, every Thursday on @mzansimagic at 18h30."

#Zahara, #Msaki and #Berita team up to celebrate African women through music

Sensational female guitarists will team up in celebrating African women through music.

Songstress Zahara, Msaki and Berita will share the stage for the first time at Emperors Palace in Kempton Park in Johannesburg on February 15.

Zahara, who signed a resident deal with Emperors Palace last year, is looking forward to the "night of the girls".

Born Bulelwa Mkutukana, Zahara said the concert would encourage female musicians in general to support and love each other.

"I look forward to share the stage with both Msaki and Berita.

"I have absolute respect for them and regard them as my little sisters."

"This is just a celebration of music with guitar girls.

"We just going to have fun while entertaining the audience."

The award-winning star, who broke into the music scene with her timeless anthem

Loliwe, said the upcoming performance was not part of her residency at the entertainment venue.

"This is just a performance and it is not part of my residency. My residency which will feature many artists will start officially in April."

Msaki has established herself as the voice of the current generation, and her composing abilities shine in hits like Imfama Ziyabona, Ungazilibali and Nal'ithemba.

Berita is an award-winning artist from Zimbabwe who sings in isiXhosa, with some of her hits being Thandolwethu and Ndicel'ikiss.

Organiser of the event, Thato Radebe, said its main aim was to uplift women in music and to show that they could fill big venues by themselves.

"We have also decided to partner with female-owned businesses in putting together the concert.

"The aim is to empower women, which is something we believe should happen every day and not at certain times of the year."

Real Housewives of Joburg climaxes in style. #RHOJ

It has been three months since viewers started watching season 2 of M-Net's reality series, The Real Housewives of Johannesburg, and the tears, betrayal and confrontational friendships have been even more dramatic than in the previous season.

The seven women who star in the show – Lebo Gunguluza, Lethabo "Lejoy" Mathatho, Mpho Merriweather, Tarina Patel, Nompumelelo "Mrs Mops" Mophatlane, Brinnette Seopela and Christall Kay – celebrated the end of the series on Friday with a final reunion.

Lebo, who was quiet and demure all season, showed her gregarious side during the finale, when the women discussed this season's dramas with media personality Phat Joe. Viewers and cast members alike were delighted to see her other side as she took on Lejoy.

Lebo, who is married to business mogul Lebo Gunguluza, accused Lejoy of borrowing wigs rather than buying them, and said Lejoy did not have medical aid.

Unfortunately for fans of the show, Lebo said she would only reveal why she exposed Lejoy in season 3.

But at the finale, the robust Lejoy hit back. She labelled Lebo a liar who had misled the public by claiming to have spent R2 million on her wedding, adding that vendors had not been paid yet. Lebo responded by threatening to take Lejoy to court.

"You can't just make accusations like that and not qualify them," said Phat Joe to Lejoy. "Do you have proof?"

Lejoy replied by addressing Lebo, saying: "I will sue the sh*t out of you. That place you stay in, in Kyalami, you'll go back to the shack you came from. At least I have a shack. You live in a rented house."

How to prepare yourself for #university

University can be pretty daunting when you're fresh out of high school and not used to being independent, not to mention the multiple things that are involved with being a university student.

Here are a few tips and tricks to help you navigate and win at varsity life.

Learn how to budget

Sometimes you have to sacrifice going out now and then to focus on the more important things.

The best way to keep track of your spending is to create a monthly budget. Make sure you've also got a little saved up for unexpected expenses.

Get the energy flowing

There's no one that can prepare you for all the activities that take place in varsity – all the studying, social activities, parties, rallies etc.

They all require your time and energy but there's only one of you so how do you manage being sociable and network with your mates and still have the time to study and keep the grades up?

Study and prepare

As much as you should have fun and enjoy your time in varsity it's important to remember why you are there in the first place.

Always be prepared for class.

Teamwork makes the dream work

In your first year it would be a great help for you to find a group of classmates that you can study and share notes with.

Find a mentor

Never be too proud to ask for help. A third year student will know more about surviving varsity than one fresh out of high school.

#CottonFest is back with a bang!

The wait is over, Cotton Fest is back with a bang this year!

The countdown to the second annual Cotton Fest has officially begun. With just two weeks to go, party animals can look forward to 2020's first major music festival in Johannesburg.

Taking place at the old Park Station in Newtown on February 1, this year's line-up has over 100 artists including A-reece, AKA, Black

Cotton Fest is a celebration of music and fashion. It was started in 2019 by musician and fashion icon, Riky Rick.

Merging known and unknown South African talent, the festival platforms the diverse elements of the hip-hop culture, while fusing the gaps within the popular local movements.

"Cotton Fest much like

Desperados resonates with the culture, so the synergy was just an obvious one when we joined the team last year.

"With joint plans to take Cotton Fest to the next level this year, we are super excited to get behind this celebration of music and fashion, where so many of SA'S talent is showcased and saluted," said

Desperados brand manager Mathew Walton.

This year's festival promises new, exciting elements such as 16 unique food stalls, five themed bars (including a cocktail bar), as well as branded sneaker activations.

What Miss Universe Zozibini Tunzi is looking forward to in 2020 #MondayMotivation

The newly crowned Miss Universe says she doesn't believe in New Year's resolutions. "I never follow them through anyway. Life is always full of surprises and sometimes we just have to enjoy the ride," ZOZIBINI TUNZI says.

"I do believe in setting goals though, and I always follow those through no matter how long it takes." We asked Zozi what she's looking forward to in the new year. Here's what she had to say.

1 My biggest dream was to win Miss Universe – and I did! It's been my goal for a while now to have a platform that would be powerful enough for me to be able to fight for the social causes I believe in. I achieved that when I was crowned Miss SA and now as Miss Universe I can take it to a global platform.

2 In 2020, I want my purpose to shine through at its brightest. I believe we were all born for a reason and we have a purpose to fulfil on Earth. Mine has already started manifesting and I hope it continues not only through the year but for the rest of my life.

3 I've learnt that hard work beats any talent you have and in 2020 I intend to work the hardest I've ever worked.

Introducing the #magazine that links aspirants to their dreams: Inspire Mzansi. #MondayMotivation

One philosopher once said; "The difference between dreamers and achievers is that achievers once dreamt and took that huge leap to greatness."

That huge step either makes or breaks.

2019 was a very difficult year for many. The bumpy road swayed many off track and news filtered through that South Africa was on the wrong side of the unemployment chart. A 11 year high unemployment rate high.

But great news is that South Africa still has many beautiful and inspiring stories that add hope in hopeless situations. Stories of men and women who shrugged off the 'I can't' tag and made something out of nothing.

We are living in a world of possibilities. Even though nothing is guaranteed, everything is possible.

That is why Trendnation has rebranded to Inspire Mzansi – a digital motivational magazine that is curated with stories that add hope. The days of negative news are so yesterday.

The January 2020 edition of Inspire Mzansi features;

How Basetsana Kumalo's book can define your 2020 with leads to success

A young man who muscled the odds to start a business with under R500

Lessons we must learn from Sho Madjozi's music success

TV shows to look forward to in 2020

Why SA's first black bank CEO is preaching education.

And lot more stories and inspire your 2020.

How to prepare yourself for work #MondayMotivation

The first week back at work is not always easy and people often need some motivation to make it through the first few days.

Here are tips on how to survive:

*Get into a work routine as quickly as possible.

It is not going to be easy, but the quicker you can get yourself back to your usual routine, the better.

You will start enjoying your work.

*Stop dreaming about career changes.

Most people start fantasising about career change during the festive season – but the reality is many never actually do it.

*Avoid social media. Some people are still on holiday and checking their updates will make you feel worse than you already do.

*Tidy up your work station. Remove all the old papers that you do not need any more and make space on your desk.

*Sort out your e-mail inbox. Delete your unread e-mails.
