With the tagline “great taste, great fun”, Doctor Chocolate has launched on to the local market.

There are three product offerings: Doctor Chocolate Original, a hazelnut spread in a syringe pack; Doctor Chocolate Magic, a candy-coated praline; and Doctor Chocolate Chess, with milk and white chocolate chess pieces and a foldable chess board.

The brand will partner with Nontwenhle Mchunu, South Africa’s first black female chocolatier.

Thoenen says: “It has become an increasingly competitive space, but we are excited. Nontwenhle and I bring some unique dynamics to the brand, from a commercial point of view and as a chocolatier, respectively.”

Food in #MiCasa? J' Something launches food channel

Mi Casa's J'Something – restaurateur, TV host, author and foodie – has embarked on a new venture with the launch of Methionine's Cooking TV on YouTube.

At the launch of his cooking channel, J'Something took guests back to where it all began with his passion for food, infused with the love of music.

J'Something said: "Five years ago I posted on Instagram a picture of roast chicken and potatoes, that I cooked for my girlfriend now wife and and people were like, 'Oh my god he's a chef, he cooks, he dances' and I'm like 'no I'm not a chef, I'm just a cook. I Google recipes and I try them out'."

But it was the roast chicken post that gave birth to the hashtag "Something's Cooking" and the hashtag blossomed into a brand.

"Something's Cooking is now the name of a cooking channel on YouTube, it's the name of a cooking show that played on Mzansi Magic, the name of the cookbook and it's also on the door of a restaurant... but, in actuality, I'm just a musician and I like cooking. I don't understand how this has happened in the last five years. I'm grateful."

He confirmed his channel would provide a platform for up-and-coming food enthusiasts and chefs.

"This channel is about the food I love to cook, food my friends love to cook, and hopefully, it inspires you to get stuck into the kitchen."

Now here's a first! Fry Family adds plant based fish style fillets

The Fry Family Food Company has added fish-style fillets to its range of plant-based protein products. They're promoted as a more sustainable and healthier way for consumers to enjoy a product that tastes like fish, has the same texture and can be cooked in the same way.

The tempura batter contains rice, maize and wheat flour, raising agents, salt, dextrose and sunflower oil. The "fish fillet" contains vegetable protein (soya), wheat, thickener, pea flour, flaxseed oil (a source of Omega-3), garlic and flavourings. Coated in a crispy batter, they're a source of protein, contain fibre and are cholesterol-free and non-GMO.

Tammy Fry, of The Fry Family Food Co and director of Meat Free Mondays in South Africa says: "The idea behind creating a fish-style fillet began when my family were at the beach. My youngest son saw fish being caught in the distance.

"As a young, passionate ocean lover who dreams of becoming a marine biologist and protector of the seas he was deeply saddened at the thought of ocean life being killed, and so asked his grandparents what they could do to help. This sparked the idea to create a product that offered the taste, texture and versatility of a piece of battered fish."

Celeb chef Siba Mtongana carves her mark in tough US industry

Mdantsane born-and-bred celebrity chef Siba Mtongana scoops silver world medal at the 2019 New York Festival's TV and Film Awards

The Eastern Cape's very own Siba Mtongana has scooped yet another prestigious international award for her hit Food Network cooking show, Siba's Table: Sibalicious!

The Mdantsane-born and bred celebrity chef walked away with a silver world medal in Las Vegas at the 2019 New York Festival's TV and Film Awards and is ecstatic over her show's continued success.

"We are so excited and really honoured by this award, especially understanding how highly competitive the US market is," said Mtongana, 34.

"It takes an A team to put together a show like Siba's

Table from production company, crew members and support from Food Network to put together this amazing show."

Making its debut in South Africa in 2013, Siba's Table has since aired throughout Africa, Europe, Middle East the United Kingdom and the US.

Siba's Table was previously awarded four times in the US alone, taking home a myriad of international accolades since 2015, including two silver screen awards and two US film and television awards.

In 2017 Mtongana also received the award for the best international food show for Siba's Table in the film and TV category, gourmand world cookbook awards in China.

Mtongana said: "From a young age I've always known that I was going to be great and known one day. It was a strong feeling from inside but I never knew how and when, but I guess this has been a manifestation of destiny and purpose that God had for my life.

"It is truly humbling and something I'm always grateful to Him about. However, it comes with great responsibility as there are many people who look up to you."

Obtaining a degree in food and consumer sciences from the Cape Technikon after matriculating, Mtongana said that she always thought she was going to be a lawyer, but she was grateful that her parents allowed her to follow her heart.

"My mother made me fall in love with cooking.

"She was my first teacher in the kitchen and it was my time with her and her freestyle cooking that intrigued me," she said.

"My parents were against me following a career in food at first, but they have seen the results of that choice and have always been so supportive and happy for me and what I have achieved."

Well known for her original recipes and modern twists to traditional family meals, Mtongana strives to celebrate her roots while adding a global twist to her food. She said travelling was her biggest source of inspiration.

"It opens up one's mind to a whole new world but at the same time makes you appreciate what you have. Wherever I travel I make sure to try new dishes from that part of the world, but I always give my work a Sibalicious local flair," said Mtongana whose Mfino fritters with soy mayo and salmon are among her top favourite creations.

"To me it's not a job or career, but a calling, as I know what I'm doing goes beyond teaching people about food. The food is a vehicle, but I get to inspire people in many ways whether it's about being a woman of significance, an entrepreneur, a pioneer, a game-changer, wife, mother or someone courageous enough to break through boundaries that were hard to break."

What's the 5G noise all about and how will you benefit?

What will 5G really mean for you?

By Ernst Wittmann, Global Account Director MEA & Country Manager – Southern Africa, at TCL

Over the past few months, we have seen a storm of hype about 5G, the next evolution in mobile network technology. Handset manufacturers are starting to come to market with 5G-ready smartphones, while many mobile network operators worldwide looking to deploy 5G networks in 2019 and 2020.  KT in Korea, Rain in South Africa and Swisscom in Switzerland are examples of operators that have already launched commercial 5G services.

So what's all the fuss about? Let's start with speed. The companies that make network equipment for the operators estimate that 5G could initially deliver connections that are 10 to 20 times faster than 4G in a real-world setting (as opposed to some of the theoretical numbers that get thrown about).  These speeds could increase in the years to come as operators deploy standalone 5G networks running at higher frequencies.

This boost in speed will be welcome for mobile consumers who want to make use of applications such as ultrahigh definition video streaming and conferencing, virtual reality, and streaming of online games through services such as Google's upcoming Stadia. It could also help to turn 5G into a serious alternative to fibre in selected areas where it is too difficult or expensive to roll out fixed-line infrastructure.

But it will not be a quick fix for rural networks because its transfer distance is shorter than 4G or 3G. While 5G will boost speeds, it does require multiple towers to be close together to perform to its potential. That means that urban South Africans will be the ones who benefit from it most, at least when it is initially launched.

Less lag and delay

5G will also deliver a significant improvement in network latency—the delay between the time it takes for a packet of data to travel between network points. Lower latency will improve your experience with services such as VOIP calls (less jitter, echoing and delays), online gaming (less of 'lag' between pushing a button and seeing a response on screen) and video (less glitching and jerkiness).

But the real game-changing potential lies in how the enhanced speed and latency of 5G could enable new services—including some that we have not yet envisioned. The networking standard will be the foundation in top of which organisations, cities and governments will build truly intelligent networks of cars, robots, drones, wearable computers, sensors and more.

These devices will be able to communicate and react in real time, bringing the full potential of the Internet of Things to life. For example, 5G will help  autonomous (self-driving cars) vehicles to communicate with each other, read live map and traffic data, and use video vision to safely navigate the roads. That all lies a few years in the future.

A long road ahead

When it comes to South Africa, widespread commercial availability of 5G may be some way off. Most of the larger network operators have piloted 5G, but are appealing to the regulator, ICASA, for network spectrum so that they can deploy it more widely.  It seems likely that the evolution to 5G will be a gradual one, as was the transition to LTE/4G and 3G before it.

We'll see 5G networks appearing in the major cities, at first, followed by wider national rollouts. Initially, the technology may make a difference only to  early adopters who are already trying out 4K video streaming and virtual reality. But in less than five years from now, 5G will become ubiquitous and many of us will take its speed and the applications it enables for granted.

IEC should consider binary voting #Elections2019

With the national elections just a month away, a great variety of opinions have been expressed in the media by numerous experts on many aspects relating to the elections.

One of the topics was the fact that many people don't register to vote or turn out to vote on election day, particularly among the youth.

We also know of many examples where a political party has found itself in power not necessarily because most of the people voted for it, but because voters did not know who to vote for or simply did not vote at all.

This happens when voters do not like any of the political parties on the ballot paper, or none of the parties meet their requirements and criteria, or the voters feel that the political system has let them down, or that their vote won't make a difference.

Well, one way of changing this lack of support from the electorate is to introduce binary voting.

Binary voting gives each voter an option of either voting for a particular party in the form of a "yes" or positive vote, or voting against a party in the form of a "no" or negative vote.

This way, voters have the option of demonstrating clearly who they do want to govern or who they do not want to govern.

Four steps to cheaper driving #MondayMotivation

Modern cars are sold with very long service intervals compared to even a decade ago.

These intervals are, however, drawn up with ideal conditions in mind, like New Zealand, where dust is unheard of and short distances in low ambient temperatures are the norm.

Africans who often drive long distances in hot, dusty conditions will prolong their engine life and get extra kilometres out of every litre by giving their car a lube service at least every ten thousand kilometres.

Here are four steps to get extra kilometres from your tank:

Oil is the life blood of your engine. Keeping it fresh is expensive yes, but it will ensure smooth running and lower consumption.

The fuel, oil and air filters are the liver, kidneys and lungs of your car. Keep them clean. Blow dust out of the air filter whenever you put in fuel. Change the fuel and oil filter when you change the oil.

Keep the wheels pumped harder rather than softer. Monitor tyre pressure before driving. When buying new tyres, get low resistance rolling tyres. They help to reduce consumption, but note, they take longer to stop.

The attitude of the nut holding the steering wheel is the main cause of high fuel bills. Change the driver's attitude to enjoy the journey, instead of racing to get to the destination.

#Malls improving quality of life #ekasi. #KasiLife #FridayFeeling #Kasi

I have read many stories from people complaining about the presence of malls and big businesses in townships. They further suggest that malls are killing small businesses.

To me this sounds like those people are saying black people can't own malls or big businesses.

Right now Soweto has the following malls: Maponya, Jabulani, Protea Gardens, Protea Glen, Diepkloof, Dobsonville and Bara Square, the complex at Bara taxi rank.

Even before the malls existed, Sowetans flocked to nearby Southgate Mall. If you say Sowetans should buy only from small businesses, then you're undermining their buying power.

The other aspect that people forget is that such malls employ far more people than those small businesses. There are many Sowetans who now walk to work instead of using transport.

Soweto is considered a city on its own and it rightly has to have amenities comparable to elsewhere.

Before the advent of malls, a former colleague of mine used to hire a minibus and pay for each seat just to go and buy his monthly groceries in the Johannesburg CBD. Those days are gone now. Township residents deserve reasonably priced goods.

We still have room for small businesses but owners must dream big.

There are successful black people who own businesses in affluent areas. Small business owners should strive for that as well.

It's worth noting that Richard Maponya himself started selling stuff using a bicycle. Jomo Sono started selling snacks and fruit on trains. Both have since reached for the stars. So, it's very doable.

#ProductReview: #Glenfiddich Fire and Cane. #WhiskyReview #Whisky

Glenfiddich Fire & Cane review

The fourth release in the Glenfiddich Experimental Series is a combination of the classic unpeated whisky with some of their rarely-seen lightly peated spirit (8 ppm phenols, hence '"Fire"). This was matured in ex-bourbon casks, married andfinished in a variety of Latin dark rum barrels (hence "Cane") for three months.

Although it is officially ageless, it is said to be between 12 and 15 years of age.

glenfiddich-fire-and-cane-experimental-seriesGlenfiddich Fire & Cane
(43%, OB 'Experimental series' 2018, dark rum finish)

Nose: surprisingly medicinal for such a moderate peat level. Herbal notes, tiger balm, sage. Hints of smoky cedar wood. Underneath there is a creamy sweetness of bananas and brown sugar. Toffee. Orange peels. Cinnamon. Mouth: creamy but perhaps a little underpowered. It starts on rounded fruits (apricot, lime) but quickly moves towards herbal notes, slightly acrid smoke, nutmeg and clove. Big peppery notes. A slightly harsh rummy note too. Finish: quite long, with plenty of spices and a bitter edge.

While most reviewers seemed to like it, this doesn't really work for me. It's not a bad whisky but the peaty notes feel like a burden rather than an asset.

Score: 79/100

Help the needy children this #winter and create a future for somebody

With the winter season upon us, I'd like to make an appeal to everyone who can help someone with warm clothes to please do so, especially for children.

When you see a child going to school without shoes, and you can give them an old pair or can afford a new pair, please don't hesitate to lend a helping hand.

If your neighbour's child doesn't have a school jersey, please give them one.

They say it takes a village to raise a child and by doing that, you will be playing your part in giving a better life.

Children are a blessing and we should raise them with love. They also say that blessed is the hand that gives. If you give a bit of what you have, you will be given more.

You can't beat the feeling of fulfilment that you get after you've helped someone. By giving, you can create a future for somebody.

#MTN launches cheap R249 smart feature phone #WhatsApp #YouTube

MTN has launched a new affordable smart feature phone, the new MTN Smart S device.

The MTN Smart S device, powered by KaiOS, is on sale for R249 and allows users to access apps such as WhatsApp, Facebook, YouTube and Google Assistant. MTN has bundled Smart S with a monthly allocation of 100MB of data valid for 30 days, for the first six months and 1GB of WhatsApp bundles, valid for 20 days, for the first six months of the contract.

"We are living in a country where affordability of smart devices is one of the biggest barriers to internet access. By introducing this cutting-edge device at such an affordable price, MTN will help its customers who may have avoided traditional smart phones due to the cost, to become part of the information society at an accessible price.

"The device comes at the right time as we recently launched MTN Chat recharging channel, which puts customers in charge by allowing them to conveniently top up airtime and data bundles on WhatsApp," says Jacqui O'Sullivan, executive: corporate affairs, MTN South Africa.

According to Pew Research Centre, South Africa has 51% smartphone penetration which contributes to the country's relatively high internet usage of nearly 60% compared to its peers in the region. |

#Invitation to join #CharlesDickens fans in South Africa. #literature

INVITATION to join the Charles Dickens Reading Circle.

Members of the public are warmly invited to join the above reading circle which seeks to explore and engage with the works of the English novelist Charles Dickens.

Our aim is, primarily, to stimulate and sustain a love of reading (which appears to be dissipating in a rapidly changing world). The novels of Dickens, although written almost 200 years ago, have an abiding relevance to the times in which we live.

The reading circle, What the Dickens, is intended to function along the following simple guidelines on a WhatsApp group: we elect a novel and engage in a group read according to a schedule of five chapters per fortnight. During the course of a particular fortnight, contributors will be invited to post and share their thoughts, ideas, opinions and questions on whatever is of interest to them regarding the chapters under review.

There is no formal or rigid obligation to post as this is intended to be, purely, a fun-filled exercise without any of "the heavy academic stuff" or literary presumptions. The emphasis is on relishing the joys of reading and the art of storytelling (of which Dickens is the undisputed master).

The focus is on laughter as we reflect on the deeper issues which affect our everyday lives: politics, power, love, compassion, hatred, greed, hypocrisy and corruption, to name but a few.

Look beyond negativity and foster good #WednesdayWisdom

It was simply wonderful to read an uplifting local news story, in among all the negativity that bombards us each day in our broken country!

I am referring to the article about two rural doctors who made sure they would reach their patients at a rural clinic on the Wild Coast, despite the road being blocked by protest action ("Doctor walks extra miles for patients", March 28).

Dr John Mitchell carried 25kg of medication in a backpack, and hiked and swam his way across a river to reach the remote clinic.

His colleague, Dr Sityhilelo Majaja, parked his vehicle at a resident's home and also proceeded to carry on on foot to be able to serve his clinic patients that day.

This is the "service above self" attitude that we could all try to adopt more towards each other.

Not only does this story warm the heart and restore faith in human nature, but it gives some pause for thought.

What could all of us do more of, or do differently, to promote a more positive way of co-existing?

What good does it really do all of us to get mired in negativity and point blaming fingers at one another?

When we start thinking beyond our own frustrations, pains and fears, we find that space opens up for creative solutions, positivity, goodwill and hope.

#Golf celebrates 45 years! #motoring

On 29 March 1974, VW's plant officially started production of the successor to the Beetle, marking the birth of what was to become a motoring legend.

The Golf turned out to be a massive success story for VW, having sold 35 million units globally since production started.

In 1974 the Golf was offered in two- and four-door guise, featuring a 300-litre luggage boot and a foldable rear bench, making it a practical small car.

Engine options included a 37kW 1.1-litre four-cylinder petrol unit and a 51kW 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol power plant.

Drive was sent to the front wheels via either a four-speed manual gearbox or an optional three-speed automatic transmission.

Unstoppable

After 31 months in production the Mk1 had already sold one million units and its success would continue in SA where the hatchback was launched in May 1978.

During the years after 1978 a number of variants were introduced into the model line-up, including a diesel version at the end of 1978 and the high performance 1 600cc Golf GTS with its matt black bumper, extra-wide radials, bib spoiler, four headlamps, GTS logo and stripes along the bottom of the doors and quarter panels.

In 1983, almost 10 years after being launched in Europe, the Golf Mk1 was replaced by a larger and more sophisticated second-generation model.

This paved the way for VW SA to retain the Golf Mk1 so as to maintain a presence in a segment which was about to be vacated by its successor, and so the concept of the Citi Golf was born, which turned out to be just as big a hit. VW is currently hard at work on the next generation, called the Golf 8.

Last year, Karlheinz Hell, Head of VW AG's Compact Series Group said, 'The next Golf will take VW into the era of fully connected vehicles with extended autonomous driving functions.

'It will have more software on board than ever before.

'It will always be online and its digital cockpit and assistance systems will be the benchmark in terms of connectivity and safety.'

SA Golf enthusiasts can expect the Golf 8 to arrive early in 2020.

From #waiter to owning a #coffee shop.. Champion #barista is living his life

Starting out as a café waiter in 2010, Port Elizabeth-born barista and coffee art master Sisa Mapetu finally has his very own coffee shop.

Aptly named The Barista Sisa, this caffeine lover's haven was opened in February and offers customers sweet coffee blends, artistic cappuccinos and unforgettable charm.

"Since I started my journey, having my own coffee shop has been a dream of mine and I can't believe that I'm finally here," said Mapetu, 33, who became a waiter after he was no longer able to fund his industrial engineering studies.

He has gone on to compete in the Speciality Coffee Association of Southern Africa's national and provincial barista championships, being named Nelson Mandela Bay's top barista in 2011, and winning third spot in the 2014 nationals.

"I knew nothing about coffee when I started as a waiter, but the aroma is what drew me in.

"I got a really great opportunity when the café I worked for decided to send me on a barista training course. And that's how my journey with coffee started," said Mapetu.

Described as an authentically African coffee shop, The Barista Sisa is situated in Opposite the Arch, an artisanal hub on Makhanda's Somerset Street.

Joining forces with Opposite the Arch's Simon Roberts to make his dream become a reality, Mapetu said it was an honour to have been given this opportunity.

"I've been wanting this for so long so I'm going to grab it with both hands. I'm going to keep working extra hard and I'd love for others, especially within the industry, to be inspired by my journey," said Mapetu.

From smooth and sweet Ethiopian espresso blends to chai lattes, iced coffees and popular cappuccino creations, The Barista Sisa is an explosion of coffee goodness, showcasing Mapetu's impressive coffee art and his cheerful personality.

"The thing I love most about my job is the people," he said.

"I love that I get to make their days a little happier with each good cup of coffee.

"Their smiles and the appreciation they show makes me love what I do."

Roberts, who met Mapetu as a Rhodes University student in 2013, said he had no idea that six years later they would be business partners.

"When I met Sisa I knew nothing about coffee, I was still drinking my filtered coffee and it was Sisa who introduced me to the good stuff," said Roberts.

"He's the best barista in town; the interaction with his customers and the personal touch he adds makes a big difference and people don't forget Sisa."

Dial-A-Pizza... Errr you mean Fly-A-Pizza.. ‘Rich Nigerians fly #pizza in from #UK’

Nigeria's minister of agriculture claims wealthy Nigerians are ordering pizza from the UK and having it flown in on British Airways flights.

The Daily Mail reported that minister Audu Ogbeh made the claim during a senate agricultural committee meeting while trying to emphasise the country spent too much money on foreign imports.

The minister also said the country's farming sector was not doing well because vegetables were imported from SA.

British Airways did not respond to the claims.

Is #Moody's not in the mood? #MotivationMonday

It seems that even international rating agencies have been afflicted with indecision, so much so that Moody's has postponed giving South Africa a rating.

Clearly this seems more like a very moody rating agency having a mood swing.

As for South Africa, with the elections, the Zondo Commission of Inquiry into state capture (which will go nowhere, ask advocate Thuli Madonsela) and load shedding, Moody's is literally trying to hold back the bad news.

The least it should say is: "same as previous", with a few warning signs.

Moody Moody's really needs to show what it is made of — that's leadership.

Gender balance is essential for communities and economies to thrive

Companies that hire women across all levels enjoy a more collaborative culture and improved productivity. The slogan teach a woman, feed a village, is a testament to the influence women have to drive change and create opportunities for the benefit of a wider community.

This is why progress for women in 2019 and beyond is hinged on gender-specific policies and programmes, some of which include equity pay and benefits, alongside national and international domestic violence laws.

However, besides creating a more conducive environment supported by these policies, Lerato Tsolo, human resources partner at Mercer, says that we still have a long way to go.

In the 2018 annual Global Gender Gap Report published by the World Economic Forum, Iceland, Norway, Finland, Rwanda and Sweden round out the top five that promote female advancement, while the Islamic Republic of Iran, Chad, Syria, Pakistan and Yemen make up the bottom.

Iceland is the first country in the world to make pay inequality illegal. According to a CNN report, companies that fail to prove pay equality will be fined close to $500 (just over R7 000) a day as long as the gap continues to exist. Not only is this an important stride in terms of a global outlook, it also shows that Iceland is clearly advancing as an economy.

But even though the Global Gender Gap Report also indicates that it could take over 20 decades for women to earn as much as men, and have equal representation in the workplace, they remain vital contributors towards building thriving businesses and societies. As such, companies will offer a greater value proposition in securing their tomorrow.

One way of achieving this is to include health benefits and financial wellbeing solutions as a holistic employee proposition while considering that diverse segments of the workforce will require tailored solutions.

Across the world, particularly in Africa, not enough is being done to ensure that these needs are met. As highlighted in Mercer's PeopleFirstEmergingMegacities report, Cities like Nairobi and Lagos rank low across these four dimensions: human, health, money and work. To address this imbalance means designing benefits, education and retirement plans in companies that adapt to specific needs. This simply means that organisations need to offer innovative programmes customised for different gender behaviours.

"Diversity is our nature, inclusion is our choice. Value is created when an environment is shaped to embrace unique views across gender, ethnicity and age. It is mainly about sparking connections, and building an environment that promotes a coherent sense of identity," said Nicol Mullins, principal leader of career business at Mercer South Africa. He also emphasised the need to embrace one another and realise that together is better.

Mercer's 2018 Gender Inflection report has found that women are better represented in organisations that view women's health as critical to developing and retaining women and that offer targeted programmes, including gender-specific health education campaigns and parental leave.

Efforts to improve financial wellness can also help mitigate the risk that productivity is being lost to time spent worrying about finances while at work.

The current landscape and dynamics of gender diversity provide a unique opportunity and platform for organisations to make strides. But while the overall progress towards diversity in the workplace may be a long one, every organisation that considers inclusion as a strategy to drive productivity, is a step ahead.

Delicious fruit liqueurs to try this weekend #FridayFeeling

The summer heat is enough reason to enjoy refreshing cocktails.  Ripened fruits are usually perfect for sipping; pool parties and cocktails.  Autumn however is an opportunity to quit goofing around. As the temperatures dip, the flavor of the cocktails improve thereby offering a better cocktail unlike the contrasted with the frisky summer drinks.

It's an opportunity to sit back and enjoy new recipes, really valuing an elaborate drink and fascinating flavor mixture. Some of the undisputed top choices are apple, pomegranate, pear, and ginger. They are exceptional when served alone but certainly combine well together for some heavenly choices.

Autumn is a best period to conjure new flavors. It's never too soon to plan a for party or for vacation. During Autumn, ripe fruits and herbs combine together are a perfect base to blend layered cocktails or something straightforward, for example, only including tonic water.

Some cocktails on this list are produced by brands on the winners list of the New York International Spirits Competition.

GINGER-INFUSED VODKA

Ginger is a root crop mainly used for culinary and curative purposes. A lot of people eat it raw and it has been proven to stomach problems as well as have nice warming effect. Some other people use 1/8 inch slice of unpeeled ginger, little honey and a lemon slice to make hot tea. The tea is tasty, light and great.

Despite its worldwide exposure, Ginger is a unique flavor mainly used in most Asian food despite . When used in combination with vodka, it gives it a strong vodka taste. In other to make about 2 cups of ginger, 2 cups of vodka and ½ sup of unpeeled ginger is required.

Place ginger and vodka in a closed jar and keep in a dark place. Check the flavor after a week. For a stronger flavor, allow it to remain for 3-4 days. If you are satisfied with the vodka taste, taste and use it immediately. There is no need removing the ginger from the cocktail.

APPLE INFUSED VODKA

Apple is a universal choice when it comes to mixers. Vodka is also a drink which can go well with any infusion. To prepare an apple infused vodka, wash and divide 2 apples into 8 different parts. Place them into a glass tumbler and shake.

Pour in affordable vodka (don't squander your cash on expensive vodka but you should be wary of inferior vodka) to cover apples. Mix and shake the mixture every day. The vodka picks up the flavor of the apple within a few days say 2 weeks. Apart from picking up the sweet apple flavor, it also picks up an attractive amber color. You should be wary of leaving it for too long in other to avoid oxidation in the apples due to exposure to air. If you are satisfied with the mixture, turn the vodka into a new glass and get rid of the apples.

APPLE MARTINI

To prepare 1 martini, you would need 1 ounce of Calvados and 2 ounces of apple-infused vodka. Alongside vodka and calvados, put 1 cup of pulverized ice in a shaker. Put 1 container pulverized ice in a shaker. Include vodka and Calvados. Shake and pour into a martini glass. I found Apple Martini rimming sugar and added that to my glass! Check back for your apple martini in a few days.  The mix of this martini and empanadas is a very good combination that everyone should try out.

JALAPENO MARGARITA

Jalapeno Margarita is an impeccably prepared new style margarita with jalapeno lime juice, Grand Marnier and smooth tequila. It takes about 10 minutes to prepare.

The ingredients needed are as follows:

  • 1 ounce Simple Syrup
  • 1 ½ ounces Silver Coin Tequila
  • 2 ounces Jalapeno Margarita Mix
  • 1 Jalapeno Pepper , sliced
  • 2-3 ounces fresh Lime Juice
  • ½ ounce Grand Mariner
  • Optional Garnish: Blistered Jalapeno , slit and perched on glass rim

Combine all the ingredients in a sealed compartment and allow mixture to occur for 24 hours or longer in the fridge. Mix all components in a shaker with ice. Shake properly and pour into a tumbler rimmed with salt.

Homemade cocktail and fruit liqueurs are wonderful serving for the Christmas season. You can enjoy them all year round if you decide to use frozen fruits. In the case of utilizing solidified natural product, you can make and appreciate them consistently.

The humble Col'Cacchio love story that built an empire!

The saying goes: "choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life", but the 26-year old Col'Cacchio love story is a much greater romantic affair than that.

Kinga Baranowska, the brain behind the Col'Cacchio (pronounced Kolcakio) menu, admits that her love for food has tied her to places and people, kept her breathing through tough times, and has provided a creative outlet for when she is working long hours. "Food and cooking have saved me in so many ways, and taught me so much," she says.

Her passion was moulded by working in her grandmother's ice-cream shop in Poland as a child and enjoying her Polish mother's wholesome traditional cooking while growing up in Europe, Australia, and finally South Africa. "One of the things I'm proudest of is how popular my creations have become," she says.

It was while working at an Italian restaurant in Johannesburg back in 1991 that Kinga cultivated her dream of opening her own eatery. "I was going to open a restaurant in Miami," she says, "as my best friend just moved there".

When regular patron Michael Terespolsky suggested a similar, yet joint venture in Cape Town, Kinga's dream quickly became a reality, albeit literally in a different direction.

Says Kinga: "I didn't even know him that well. My parents thought I was crazy – but I said yes."
"The next thing I knew we were building a pizzeria on the Foreshore. Pizza is what I knew, and there was no such gourmet offering available in Cape Town at the time," she says. Michael and Kinga opened their doors a year later on her 21st birthday.

It was a dream come true, and the birth of a bond that evolved into a partnership that stretched way beyond the walls of the business. The duo's personalities and skills were so well suited and complementary that working together added not only richness to the relationship but romance as well. The starry-eyed entrepreneurs were married not long after they realised their mutual appreciation for gourmet dining.

"Spouses come to respect and admire each other in new ways," notes Kinga. "When it works, it is a beautiful thing. I couldn't imagine building my life's dream with anyone else."

"Working together provides spouses with an opportunity to see their significant other do something they're good at and passionate about," says Kinga's husband and CEO of Col'Cacchio Michael Terespolsky.

"We saw each other through the trenches, and had to support each through the best and toughest times. At the very beginning, we had to be the policymakers, the cooks, the staff trainers and the waiters. We had to learn on our feet," he says.

It would be 12 years before Michael and Kinga would start franchising, and by that time, the power couple knew exactly what they we were doing.

Forward a quarter of century, Michael and Kinga, along with partner Greg Mommsen, have grown Col'Cacchio into a household franchise family across Southern Africa.

Greg (with his wife Roz) opened the first franchised Col'Cacchio store in Bryanston. Similar to their Capetonian counterparts they had to manage the staff, cook the food, and often double as waiters to save up their tips and keep the place going.

Indeed, couples who go into business together must do so with care.

#Mpekweni Beach Resort is the ideal #Easter getaway

The perennially popular Mpekweni Beach Resort is situated along the R72 Coastal Road about 40km from Port Alfred and an hour or so from East London.

We arrive at Mpekweni just in time for dinner in the restaurant packed with conference goers who have booked the resort's facilities.

Before we sit down to dinner we are each welcomed with a bottle of wine and a snack basket in our lovely double rooms overlooking the beach, just a stone's throw from the reception and restaurant.

Placed in the exceptional care of marketing manager Linda Maxam, who later joins us for drinks after dinner, we indulge in a delectable buffet while local singer Monde Fani entertains us with his renditions of soothing RnB love song covers.

We learn the resort has a 24hour gym, babysitting services as well as games rooms where big and little players can enjoy table tennis, pool and play station gaming.

There is loads more to see and do, with the beach and river offering the best of both.

With a friendly and genuine smile, Linda gives us a tour of the resort during which we meet spa manager and therapist Zintle Nzo, who boasts 11 years of experience. At her haven she offers massages, facials, hand and foot rituals and waxing services with a smile.

It's all about bonding with nature here and visitors typically come to enjoy languid beach walks, canoeing, birdwatching, fishing, river cruises and various sporting activities.

Although the resort caters for families, couples, colleagues and more, I immediately imagine it will be a perfect destination for a girls' trip I hope to enjoy with my friends in the near future.

Sho Madjozi's secret to global success. #MondayMotivation

Making music that her "cousins in the village" will like has landed rapper Sho Madjozi a top accolade. She has been named the best entertainer in Africa by the business publication Forbes Woman Africa.

The 26-year-old artiste, whose real name is Maya Wegerif, is unapologetic about her music, lyrics, hair and attitude. But she admitted this week that her religious mother called her out on her lyrics.

"A lot of African artistes, when they are trying to be the face of Africa to the world, try to make music they think Europeans will like. I don't bother with that.

"I make music I know my cousins in the village will like. I make music for people in Limpopo. It would be absolutely meaningless to me if I was a star in Europe and not known or loved in Limpopo. I would be completely devastated."

That strategy has paid off as she featured on the Vogue World 100 list of people to watch in 2019 after performing at the Global Citizen Festival: Mandela 100 last year. At the festival, she shared the stage with Ed Sheeran, Usher, Chris Martin from Coldplay and Beyoncé among others.

She has also bagged a collaboration with Damon Albarn, co-founder and lead vocalist of virtual British rock band Gorillaz.

The Huku star said it was "surreal" to be chosen by Forbes along with strong women from across the continent.

"I really couldn't believe it. Being an independent artiste, I never expected to get such recognition. It's encouraging because the hard work that I have put in is being seen.

"Sometimes you don't feel like you are being seen because you are going up against artistes that have entire teams dedicated to getting them exposure and most of the time, you feel like you work yourself to death and it is not seen."

Announcing the winner, Forbes described Madjozi as an "unintimidated young South African musician" who in addition to her music "prides herself in uplifting others".

It was an accolade for the artiste from the village of Shirley, just east of the N1 between Polokwane and Thohoyandou in Limpopo. She follows, among others, Trevor Noah and Black Coffee by getting mainstream international recognition.

"I've performed in several countries and it's so great to hear fans sing my music back to me, to feel the love. Global Citizen was probably the biggest platform I have performed on.

"But the highlights of my career have been those things that mean more to me personally and which make the work I do worthwhile, like seeing young black girls embrace their culture because of me or embracing their hair because they saw mine."

She has helped put her home language of Tsonga on the map and is one of the few musicians to rap in the language. However, coming from a conservative Christian home, her racy lyrics have sometimes ruffled feathers.

"My parents are very supportive of me. They still get excited with everything I am doing but my mom's side is a little trickier because she is quite religious and my lyrics are not.

"She has called me out on it but I think we have got to a point where she has learnt to accept me and I have learnt to accept her as well." Madjozi always knew she wanted to be a star and cut her teeth as an actor on Mzansi Magic's popular youth telenovela Isithembiso and as a poet trying to change the world by speaking about racism that black people experience every day.

She said that her desire to fight racism was fuelled by her wrongful arrest while studying at a college in Massachusetts in the US in 2010. She was detained because she was unable to immediately verify that the laptop she was carrying belonged to her, while a fellow white student had not had to verify his laptop. "It confirmed what I already knew, that black people are often not treated equally to other races in a society," she said. – TimesLive
