#Hisense C30 review - first impressions make lasting impressions

The new Hisense C30 Rock is a masterpiece!

I fell in love with the phone the very moment I laid my eyes on it. The packaging is designed in a creative way that explains the product to the consumer. It has details of dust and water 'screaming' away from the phone. Yes that's right - the Hisense C30 rock is dust and water proof.

It also comes in a very neat slim design that makes you want to hold onto it for eternity. As dearly as you would hold onto it, this gadget can succumb to anything. I'm talking about dropping it, sweeping dust onto it, plunging it in water. It is able to handle the 'abuse' we put our phones through everyday as it boasts of a corning Gorilla glass 4.

Well the wise always adhere to the notion of never judging a book by its cover, so I put the phone to test. Does it really perform the way it should?

The results were incredible!

...Processing speed is like walking in the park

Running on the December 2016 released Android 7 (Nougat), this gem of a phone boasts of  32GB storage, 3GB RAM, an octa-core 64-bit Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset. All these features make it easy to multi task without slowing down its performance. I was able to write my articles while music played in the background and at the same time two items were downloading from separate bowsers.

...The camera redefines selfies and 'cut throat' pics

I have always had problems with taking selfies. Not because I'm a bad camera person (hide face), but because most smart phones come with front camera's that aren't up to scratch.

Hisense seemingly found a gap in the market and included a cute 5MP front camera that does wonders. It gives you the power to garnish your social media accounts with great pics tailored by you.

So if the front camera is 5MP then . The rear camera is an astounding 16MP. YES SIXTEEN!!! Now it means you won't just have a smartphone, you will automatically become a ' photo journalist'.

...Dolby gives sound the extra oomph!

I have often found myself watching a movie on my phone and not feeling it simply because of the sound. Yes sound does play a crucial role when it comes to enjoying a movie. The Hisense C30 Rock comes with

...Fast charging will rock you

The Hisesnse C30 rock comes packed with a 3000mAh battery. But wait till you hear this, it only takes about two hours to fully charge it. Depending on how often you use your phone, the battery can die out after two days. How great is that when load shedding strikes?

...Some cool tech features

The smartphone sensors measure physical quantities and transmit them to the application processor. The phones's accelerometer is a built-in electronic component that measures tilt and motion. The proximity sensor detects when a user is holding the phone near their face during a call and turns off the display to prevent keypad presses and battery consumption from the display. The C30 has Dual SIM capability, which means that you can insert two different SIM cards and use them both from one phone.

.... Just R4499 for a modern smartphone, hmmm

The pricing is alright if you really want a strong phone that will walk you past several years.

Well, everything exciting about this phone can't be concluded in one article so I will most certainly come up with a part two.

Money mistakes people should avoid in marriage

High-net worth individuals who have made a commitment to marry their life partners should not overlook the importance of mutual understanding, trust, open and honest communication to grow and preserve their wealth.

Eric Enslin, CEO of FNB Private Wealth and RMB Private Bank, says "One of the attributes of successful wealth management is working together as a family towards a common goal. As a result, both partners should be intimately involved in their wealth journey in order to build a family focused wealth legacy that can be transferred to the next generation."

Having advised many families about wealth building, Enslin has noted a few common mistakes that high-net worth couples make.

·         Not consolidating wealth advisory – working with the same advisor who provides tailored services for the entire family has many advantages. Couples can save on advisory fees, consolidate financial commitments such as investments and bank accounts as well as benefit from wealth management advice that takes both their goals and aspirations into account.

·         Neglecting estate planning – a fundamental mistake that high-net worth couples make is taking estate planning for granted, leaving them vulnerable in the unfortunate event that one partner passes away. This poses a serious threat to the family's wealth if there isn't an updated will in place that provides certainty on issues related to debt, trust structure, personal and business assets.

·         Lack of transparency – it is often said that communication is one of the building blocks of a successful marriage; the same principle applies to wealth management. Couples should openly talk about money management issues and reach mutual understanding on investments, tax strategies, business decisions and challenges, as well as long-term wealth strategies.

·         Not sharing responsibilities - entrusting one partner to manage the entire family's financial affairs is a mistake that can lead to long-term ramifications. Both partners should be actively involved to be in a good position to pass on knowledge to their heirs.

·         Poor prenuptial agreement – an agreement should be reached upfront on how assets and income acquired prior to the marriage should be distributed in the event of a divorce. Failure to enter into a comprehensive prenuptial agreement can lead to a lengthy and costly legal battle.

Some handy money saving beauty hacks

There are simple tricks that each and every women should learn. Trips to the salon become expensive, and finding the time to look red carpet ready is not always an option.

Below is a list of all natural ways to gain quick beauty results by using ingredients that can be found in your kitchen.

Eat your way to glowing skin.

The solution for glowing skin is so simple, and inexpensive too! It begins with water. Drinking water frequently has noticeable health benefits. You can also enjoy a daily selection of fruit and vegetables that consists majorly of water:

Strawberries 96% water
Iceberg lettuce 96% water
Cucumber 98% water
Oranges 87% water
Watermelon 92% water
Grapefruit 91% water
Tomatoes 93% water

Remove stubborn black heads in 20 minutes.

Squeeze a lemon and add baking soda until it forms a thick creamy paste. Apply this paste evenly to the targeted area and leave for up to 20 minutes. Rinse with cold water.

Remove unwanted hair naturally with no razor.
Remove unwanted hair by mixing baking soda, olive oil and coffee grounds together. The baking soda helps the coffee break down the hair follicles starting at the roots. The olive oil acts as a moisturiser, leaving your skin and legs feeling smooth.

DIY at home tan.

Two tablespoons of cocoa powder (depending on how tan you want to be). Add any moisturiser and an empty bottle. Mix well together and apply evenly. This is great for naturally light women.

#AfricaDay Feature: Did 6000 languages come from a single African language?

New research conducted by scientists suggests that all modern languages that we know today, from English to Mandarin, began from one ancient African language. This single mother tongue may be as old as 50 000 – 70 000 years old, according to Quentin Atkinson from the University of Auckland, New Zealand.

Atkinson suggests that this ancient mother tongue was first introduced by our oldest lineage of ancestors. He found that they laid the foundation for human civilisation, which later led to other cultural advances, including more sophisticated art and hunting tool technology. Atkinson holds that speech was developed earlier than previously thought. Scientists disagree. They believe that language evolved independently throughout different parts of the world.

Atkinson also hypothesised that all the world's cultures began with the first population. They spread from Africa and their single language became more exposed. "It was the catalyst that spurred the human expansion that we all are a product of," Atkinson said, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Other compelling evidence shows that the number of distinct sounds, or phonemes — consonants, vowels and tones — in 504 world languages, supports his theory of a dwindling dialect spoken by our ancient lineage, according to the Daily Mail.

The study found that some of the click-using African languages have more than 100 sounds, whereas Hawaiian, a more contemporary human migration route out of Africa, has only 13, the Times reported. English has about 45 phonemes, or sounds.

The phoneme pattern and human genetic diversity match as humans migrated from sub-Saharan Africa roughly 70,000 years ago.

Squeezable #HTC U11 launched... And the world goes 'gaga'

The HTC U11 represents the firm making "real noise" in the smartphone market again, industry analysts have said.

The Taiwanese firm's latest flagship includes the unique ability to squeeze the device in order to interact with it.

The HTC U11, which will cost £649, was unveiled during a live event in Taiwan and is the tech giant's challenger to the new Samsung Galaxy S8 and the iPhone 7.

The Edge Sense technology can be used to open the camera and take selfies, as well as launch certain apps and trigger voice control features.

It also works when the phone is wet and if the user if wearing gloves, HTC said, and it will also support voice dictation for messages.

What are the main features?

Elsewhere, the U11 has a 12 megapixel, UltraPixel 3 rear-facing camera which comes complete with optical image stabilisation (OIS) - which smoothes shaky photography.

The front-facing 'selfie' camera is 16 megapixels and can also be triggered by voice command.

The USonic earphones which come in the box with the phone have also been given active noise cancellation for the first time - meaning they are able to filter out background noise.

How does Edge Sense squeeze work?

Let's start here: squeezing is exactly as it sounds. The HTC U11 has pressure-sensitive areas around the sides of the handset meaning you can squeeze the phone when you're holding it and the phone will detect that action. HTC is calling the whole thing Edge Sense.

What can you do with a squeeze?

HTC is offering a load of customisation, so you'll be able to trigger a whole range of action through squeezing. That might be something you do all the time - like launching the camera - or might be something you want to reserve as a special action for the squeeze, like opening the Wi-Fi hotspot.

By default, the squeeze will do different things in different places. Here are some examples.

A squeeze from the lock screen will launch the camera. A squeeze will then focus and take a photo. When the camera is open a long squeeze will switch from front to back camera.

When the keyboard is open, i.e, you're entering text, a squeeze can switch to voice entry instead.

A long squeeze will launch Google Assistant, so you can avoid using the hotword

Basically, squeezing can be used to launch or trigger an action. HTC will let you change the default actions to launch and app of your choice, take a screenshot, turn on the torch/flashlight, launch voice recording, launch HTC Sense Companion, turn the hotspot on or off.

Peggy-Sue Khumalo offers guiding framework to #entrepreneurial success

Many start-up and upcoming entrepreneurs or goal setters long to be as successful as Businesswoman Peggy-Sue Khumalo.

Khumalo, who currently  heads the Public Sector and Black Business Portfolio for Investec Group and Investec Corporate and Institutional Banking, has done great things in the corporate world.

She recently spoke to entrepreneurs at the recent To The Point session were she provided pointers to help entrepreneurs set achievable business targets and objectives.

A GrowthPoint Properties initiative, To The Point sessions are held every month to help entrepreneurs achieve the success and growth that will help them reach their goals.

Below are Khumalo's six 'Ps' of life as a guiding framework.

Purpose
Have a purpose greater than yourself. Serve others. Make a difference.

Passion
Your purpose becomes your passion. Whatever it is – children, community, family – it is what gets you out of bed every morning and keeps you moving forward, through good times and bad.

Persistence
Never give up. Life is full of surprises. Don't quit. Have a zest for life. In South Africa, many of our parents had nothing but made it work. Be careful of becoming complacent or dependent on others. Challenge others who have fallen into this trap.

Patience
We get impatient too quickly. Be patient; not everything happens in the time you want it to. This is an unbelievably important quality.

Performance
Give your best. If you want something to happen, get on with it and do the job. This isn't only about work, but also about work-life balance. There isn't one perfect balance. It is all about the integration of all aspects of your life.

People
People and relationships are everything. You are who you are because of the people in your life. You are also accountable to these people. Serve those who matter to you.

Fancy fuelling with some #F1 fuel? Engen Primax Unleaded is now available in SA and Namibia

Engen Primax Unleaded, which has the same fuel technology and engineering that has powered the Mercedes AMG Petronas Motorsport Formula One team to three world championships, is now available at Engen forecourts in South Africa, Botswana and Namibia.

To launch the fuel in these countries, Engen is rolling out a comprehensive advertising campaign, extolling the benefits of the fuel and asking consumers to 'Put a little F1 in your tank'.

The fast-paced and impactful TVC, conceptualised by FCB Cape Town, shows an F1 car racing through a dark tunnel at high speed.  As it accelerates through the tunnel the car's fuel gauge never waivers from the full position, demonstrating Engen Primax Unleaded's key benefits of performance and economy.

The car roars towards a light at the end of the tunnel and, when it exits, we find ourselves on an Engen forecourt where an attendant is filling up a normal car. The F1 car, it's then revealed, is a metaphor for the high-tech fuel that was travelling through the petrol pipe.

The commercial was shot in Cape Town over two days. It was directed by Jonathan Parkinson and Nicole Ackermann of Star Films. Post-production was done by Orchestra Blue.

You can view the ad here https://youtube/ziPcDL9ahio and the longer virtual reality experience here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FiI9FmdErhE.

Engen had briefed FCB Cape Town to develop a strategy that took cognisance of the fuel's ability to improve performance and increase economy.

The agency's response was to leverage the success the fuel has had with the Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula One team on the racetrack. The team has won three consecutive world championships using the same fuel technology now available in South Africa.

The #Domestos Take Your Time campaign launches lavatory showdown across SA

Which South African city spends the most time on the loo? Whose bathroom breaks are the most regular? Where do people prefer to use the throne — at home or at work? Which city keeps its bathrooms so dazzling clean and white that they rack up the most toilet time in the land?

These are the questions weighing on the good people at Domestos White & Shine. To answer them, they have launched a countrywide Domestos Take Your Time campaign to get South Africans logging their bathroom hours and comparing notes.

The innovative campaign aims to revolutionise the time South Africans spend on the toilet, getting rid of stigma and even encouraging them to brag about it.

"The minute you start spending more time in the toilet, you realise how important absolute cleanliness and hygiene are in this environment," said Ant Borstlap, Senior Brand Manager, Handy Andy and Domestos. "We asked, how would the public react to a product that made every toilet perfect — white and shiny! People will spend longer periods of time in nice, clean toilets. Then we thought, what if we could get the public to take their time while enjoying some great content… because everyone loves a good read in the toilet!"

With this in mind, Domestos White & Shine has partnered with Caxton to build a mobile-only web platform at www.takeyourtime.domestos.co.za that allows users to curate a profile with a custom super-newsfeed of varied content.

"It's the world's first website that gets you to spend more time on the toilet, measures that time and creates a national conversation on social media about taking your time on the toilet," said Borstlap.

The user profiles can display data about the user's total time, average time per visit, weekly comparisons and location.

"Our goal with the campaign is to create the biggest, loudest social conversation around taking your time on the toilet, while providing our consumers with personalised content to enjoy in their bright, shiny toilets." said Borstlap.

The Take Your Time campaign insights will be delivered across social media, supported by graphs and visuals showing the week's toilet trends, as the cities of the nation vie for the title of South Africa's toilet champ.

"We believe this idea can cross audiences, interests and occasions," said Borstlap. "We are excited to be starting a national conversation that is set to revolutionise the way people see their time on the toilet"

Take care of your skin this winter

We all know that cold weather means low humidity and this combined with dry air acts as a sponge and soaks up all the water in your skin. When it's cold there's less moisture in the air and winter weather demands skincare that's heavier and that protects the skin more than usual.

Tips to prepare your skin for winter:
-       Use Sunscreen: even though its winter and the sun is not that hot, we still need to protect our skins from the damage caused by UVA and UVB rays.
-       Drink lots of water: Our skins loose vital moisture in the colder months, make sure to keep hydrated from the inside by drinking at least eight cups of water before bed.
-       Avoid the peels: If your skin is prone to be very dry, avoid using harsh peels, masks and alcohol based toners.
-       Avoid super-hot water: Hot water strips your skin of vital moisture. Rather opt for a luke warm wash on your face.

Nandi Madida challenges Jessica Nkosi on #LSBAfrica

"It" girls Jessica Nkosi and Nandi Madida are the next screen queens to face off in Lip Sync Battle Africa this coming Thursday (MTV Base, DStv channel 322, 18 May 2017 @ 21:30 CAT).

While BET A-List host Nandi may have years of experience on stage, thanks to her thriving musical career, it's clear that she will have tough competition from Isibaya soap queen Jessica, who's showcased her dancing skills in numerous Instagram dance challenges.

Cheered on by the electrifying energy of host Pearl Thusi and "colour commentator" Denrele Edun, the two red carpet darlings will pull out all the stops in this no holds barred seventh episode of Lip Sync Battle Africa.  The two beauties will stop at nothing when it comes to winning the winner's belt: Jessica gets all dressed up in a giant ballgown to belt out a big ballad by British superstar Adele, while Nandi channels Pharrell in an upbeat rendition of "Happy", and even enlists her own husband's huge hit "Clap Your Hands" to get the audience on her side.

Commented Nandi, "I am so thrilled I got the opportunity to be on the new season Lip Sync Battle Africa – I haven't had so much fun in ages.  I was surprised how competitive I got, but I absolutely loved working with Jessica, Pearl and Denrele, and it was a real blast to be part of this phenomenal show."

Added Jessica, "Growing up we all did some lip syncing privately in our rooms when no one was watching and to finally be able to do it on a stage with an audience was amazing. I felt like I was the actual performer of the songs I was performing. I don't think people have seen me get loose like I did during my performances - usually because of the character I play they expect me to be a certain way, but in Lip Sync Battle they will definitely see another side of me."

Will Nandi's singing experience topple Jessica's acting skills on #LSBAfrica stage? And which "It" girl will raise their levels and raise the #LSBAfrica trophy? Find out on Lip Sync Battle Africa on MTV Base (DStv channel 322) on Thursday 18 May 2017 at 21:30 CAT.

The launch marks the Fiat's return to the medium-compact segment with an offering that appeals directly to the heart of the market, thanks to a simple but comprehensive range that meets customer needs. The Tipo family's success is based on a value proposition combined with best-in-class passenger and luggage space, as well as versatility.

Thanks in part to these characteristics, the Tipo family has been awarded a string of accolades, the latest of which is the prestigious Autobest "Best Buy Car 2016" award, chosen by a jury of 26 journalists from the most authoritative European car magazines. This award underlines the model's design, quality, comfort and versatility and rewards an exceptional offering that is squarely focused on value for money, a crucial concept in Fiat's functional family strategy, summed up in the slogan "You don't need much to get a lot".

South African brandies take centre stage in the US

While South Africa's credit rating has taken a knock, our country's brandies have proved to be the international gold standard, claiming five Double Gold medals at the illustrious San Francisco's World Spirits Competition (SFWSC).

Once again Oude Meester revealed their Midas touch at the competition last month, with a haul of three Double Gold medals for their Oude Meester 12-Year-Old Reserve Brandy, the Oude Meester 18-YearOld Sovereign and the Oude Meester Demant - which incidentally also won the title as World's Best Brandy at the 2017 World Brandy Awards. Van Ryn's Distillery, another perennial global top performer, claimed two Double Gold medals for the Van Ryn's 12-Year-Old Distiller's reserve and the Van Ryn's 20-Year-Old Collectors Reserve respectively.

Now in its 17th year, the SFWSC is considered among the most influential and widely respected spirit competitions in the world. This year's competition attracted a record number of entries with more than 2 100 spirits submitted for evaluation by an expert judging panel comprising of 43 international industry experts.

"Any medal from the SFWSC is considered a proud achievement, but for Distell to win five Double Gold medals is truly an exceptional performance and perhaps the most authoritative acknowledgement that South African brandies can compete head-to-head with the world's most famous cognacs," said Distell Brandy Ambassador, Nick Holdcroft. "We are extremely proud of the quality of our brandies within our borders, but to win in a part of the world, like San Francisco is truly special, and shows the opportunity we have in spreading these products internationally."

With winter cold fronts happening around the country, South Africans can enjoy some of these premium brandies to keep the chill at bay.

SA businesses brace for winter power price hikes

As winter looms, business and industrial electricity users are bracing for a "perfect storm" of winter price hikes coming into effect from June.

The imminent price hikes, however, signal good news for low energy consuming technologies, as companies race to offset their spiralling electricity costs and invest in sustainable and renewable energy alternatives, according to analysts.

First to hit consumer pockets is the anticipated implementation of Eskom's winter rates, which will see consumers paying more per kilowatt-hour for electricity usage between June and August.

"Consumers will see their energy bills going up in winter but it's not only because they are consuming more electricity, but also because they are paying more per kilowatt-hour," energy specialist Heather McEwan of sustainability company Rhino Group.

MUNICIPAL TARIFFS ADD FURTHER STRAIN:

In addition, the annual municipal electricity tariff increases would also come into effect in July, she said.

"Electricity bills will rise even further in July, when the annual increase kicks in on top of the winter prices. So, after August, when the winter rates fall away, consumers will still be paying more for electricity due to the annual escalation."

In February, the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) approved a maximum 2.2% electricity tariff increase by Eskom for the 2017/18 period, and recently capped municipal electricity tariff increases at 1.88%.

TV personality Zola urges people to enlist with God

Musician, actor and TV personality, Zola has urged people to get aligned to God all the time. In an interview with TruFM, Zola divulged about the importance of walking with the inspiration of God.

"I want to talk about getting aligned with God whilst things are good so that they can call him when things are bad."

Zola heavily stated that before one can come to rely on God, you first need to become a part of his (God) circle.

"People must call him when they are ok so that God will get back to them when they are in trouble. People must not call God when they are in trouble because they shouldn't only depend on him when everything goes wrong," he said.

Once again emphasising that people must "enlist with God" so their journey to spiritual healing can begin.

Dani Alves inspires #Juventus to #UEFA Champions League final

Juventus defender Dani Alves produced an inspired display capped by a stunning volleyed goal in a 2-1 win over AS Monaco on Tuesday that took the Italians into their second Champions League final in three years.

Brazilian Alves crossed for Mario Mandzukic to net the first goal in the semi-final second leg and then scored the second through an explosive strike which, with Juve leading 2-0 from the first game, effectively finished off the tie by halftime.

Juventus were coasting until Monaco's exciting 18-year-old forward Kylian Mbappe pulled a goal back in the 69th minute, ending a run of six successive clean sheets in the competition for the Serie A side and veteran goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon.

Tempers then flared when Monaco defender Kamil Glik appeared to stamp on forward Gonzalo Higuain, although the referee took no action against the Pole, leading to a bad-tempered final 20 minutes as Juve ran out comfortable 4-1 winners on aggregate.

They will face either Real Madrid or Atletico Madrid, who meet in the other semi at the Vicente Calderon on Wednesday with Real leading 3-0. The showpiece match is in Cardiff on June 3.

Success is dependent on your personal drive: Thenjiwe Stemela

At times inspiration, and not an apple a day, is just what the ordered.

Getting something done is often a huge task for many youths throughout South Africa. Never mind getting it done well. But for TV presenter, actress and all round media personality, Thenjiwe Stemela, the inspired always find a way.

Having made great strides in her illustrious and continuously growing career, she hopes to rub her inspiration onto the youths of Mzansi.

"I am highly ambitious. And I believe that South Africa's youths are not seeing the forest for the trees, sometimes. Success is determined on your personal drive and hard work. Sometimes it is a labour of love but stick at it long enough and it will start paying dividends," she told the Star.

Stemela isn't just the brainy and infectious face on TV. She is also a UCT honours graduate in theatre and performance. But beyond her illustrious media career, Stemela is also juggling various balls.

"We live in an era of multi tasking and diversifying. And in the media one of the greatest challenges is not to become pigeonholed. In the end its all about creating content whether acting, producing, firing ior designing the advent of social media," she said,

Stemela is indeed an shining example who has not only shown that anyone can do anything they are destined to do. She is inspiring the youth to wake up and do something. After all, the future tbelings to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.

This is how Stemela implores it - "Read more, explore more, and do not hesitate to pursue self improvement at every turn."
