Weekend Sports Wrap

So much happened this past weekend on the global sporting field and
here is the break down.

The Vodacom Blue Bulls rung in three tries as they beat the Xerox
Golden Lions 31-17 (halftime 16-10) at Loftus Versfeld on Friday
evening.

At DHL Newlands in Cape Town, flyhalf Robert du Preez engineered a DHL
Western Province 34-27 (halftime 17-20) victory over the Cell C Sharks
on Saturday.

The Province flyhalf controlled the game brilliantly, slotting three
conversions, a penalty and creating three tries to claim the man of
the match award.

Also on Saturday,the Toyota Free State Cheetahs routed the Eastern
Province Kings 57-25, scoring nine tries to three in the process.

Africa T20 Cup

Things were exciting on the cricket field as the North West Seeff
Dragons made it three wins out of three and progressed to the Africa
T20 Cup semifinals after a comprehensive 64-run bonus-point drubbing
of Western Province in their final Pool A match at the City Oval in
Pietermaritzburg on Sunday.

US Open

What is the story behind Serena Williams and her so called 'Wonder
Woman' sleeves?

Anyway, the remaining four last-16 matches take place on Monday when
world No 1 and six-time winner Serena Williams tackles Yaroslava
Shvedova of Kazakhstan.

Carla Suarez Navarro meets Simona Halep while Agnieszka Radwanska
takes on teenager Ana Konjuh and two-time champion Venus Williams
faces Karolina Pliskova.

In the mens section, the quarter finals are scheduled for Monday, when
world No 2 Andy Murray will take on Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov.

Third-seeded Stanislas Wawrinka, sixth-seeded Kei Nishikori of Japan,
eighth-seeded Austrian Dominic Thiem and former champion Juan Martin
del Potro will also battle for quarterfinal berths.

Afcon 2017

Burkina Faso, Democratic Republic of Congo, Togo, Tunisia and Uganda
on Sunday filled the final five 2017 Africa Cup of Nations places that
were up for grabs.

They will join Algeria, Cameroon, Egypt, Ghana, Guinea-Bissau, Ivory
Coast, Mali, Morocco, Senegal, Zimbabwe, all of whom qualified before
the final round, and hosts Gabon at the tournament next January.

There is no place for Bafana Bafana who drew one all with Mauritania
and will want to win their multitude of fans when they host giants
Egypt in the Nelson Mandela Challenge Cup.
