Zuma's birthday wish - To see South Africa become a better country

President Jacob Zuma’s birthday wish is to see South Africa become a better country, he said on Tuesday.

“I am grateful for the gift of life and to celebrate this special day in my life,” he said in a statement on his 74th birthday.

“I wish for our country to continue working together to address our common challenges, particularly in this difficult economic climate of joblessness; rising fuel and food prices and high levels of poverty and inequality. It is only through our unity as South Africans that we will be able to overcome the current challenges and build a prosperous South Africa,” he said.

The presidency wished Zuma a happy birthday.

Zuma is expected to celebrate his 74th birthday with family in a low-key gathering at the Mahlamba Ndlopfu residence in Pretoria.

There have been widespread calls for Zuma to resign following the Constitutional Court ruling that he failed to uphold the Constitution when he did not comply with Public Protector Thuli Madonsela’s remedial action regarding payment for the upgrades to his Nkandla homestead.
