Castle Lager Rally Behind The Springboks

South African CEO's Brave Cold To Raise Money For Charity

Around 240 CEOs braved a night on the streets of Sandton on Thursday to raise awareness for people living in poverty. The 702 International CEO Sleep Out initiative is said to have raised over R23million for the charity organisation Girls & Boys Town.

It was the first time South Africa took part in the challenge and the CEO of Lonmin Ben Magara said urged the country’s corporate sector to play its part in eradicating poverty.

“It’s such a good cause and I felt it’s an opportunity for people who have had the fortunes like we have to have a chance to give back,” he was quoted as saying.

NickFest Proves An Huge Hit In SA

Nickelodeon’s first NickFest this weekend was a huge success after thousands of happy kids and families attended the sold-out family-friendly festival at The Globe at Silverstar (13-14 June).

Mums, dads, kids, grandparents, aunts and uncles alike turned out to participate in fun, activities for kids 4-14, and to  watch Mi Casa, Cassper Nyovest, The Buzz, The Tsogo Sun Arts Academy All Stars and Morgan Beatbox perform alongside Nickelodeon heroes Dora the Explorer, Diego, SpongeBob SquarePants and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.



Among the familiar faces enjoying the atmosphere were Khanyi Mbau, Thapelo Mokoena ,Lulo Café, Riky Rick, Reason, Lean Manas, Penny Lebyane and many more celebrities ,while funnyman and ‘comedy doctor” Riaad Moosa was hilariously on cue as MC and hype man.



A huge draw was the NickFest Celebrity Slime Challenge, which saw celebrity volunteers such as Sizwe Dhlomo, Darren “Whackhead” Simpson, Proverb, Kagiso Lediga, Pearl Thusi, Boity Thulo, Trevor Gumbi, Ms Cosmo, David Kibuuka, Altovise Lawrence and Maps Maponyane  doused in sticky green slime to help raise funds to the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital Trust.  The money raised will help towards the ongoing construction of the state of the art pediatric hospital currently being built in Parktown, Johannesburg.  Ten percent of proceeds from ticket sales is going to the same worthy cause.

SAA Vows To Develop Black Business

South African Airways (SAA) has pledged to nurture and develop black business, entrepreneurs and industrialists as well as women and youth.

Speaking at an entrepreneurs gathering in Midrand on Friday, SAA board chairperson Dudu Myeni said the initiative marks – for the first time in the history of South African aviation – a concerted effort to seek out, nurture and develop black business, entrepreneurs and industrialists.

The meeting took place following a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between SAA and the Department of Trade and Industry (dti).

Following the signing, SAA invited small and medium enterprises that are 50% or more Black Owned, Black Women Owned, Disabled and Youth Owned businesses to its series of suppliers’ engagement summits.

“Your presence is testament to our belief that there are a multitude of talented, skilled and successful black owned businesses in South Africa – a collective with whom we can engage and together work toward realising our country’s true potential,” Myeni said.

“Traditionally and by legacy, aviation represents what has been symptomatic of perhaps many aspects of our economy – there has always been a lot of talk-shopping and not enough doing. Now is the time for inclusive participation.

“Now is the time for organic development and support for business. And SAA is putting its money where our promises are, SAA is open for business,” Myeni said.

She continued to say that the future of South Africa is largely dependent on state-owned enterprises nurturing small and medium enterprises.

“Small business drives our economy and represents the vast majority of the formal and informal sector; it employs the majority of South Africans. Insights from the 2013 study by Oxford Economics show that the SAA Group contributes R9.2 billion to the South African GDP (0.3%) of which R1.6 billion is contributed through spending by employees and the company’s supply chain. The study also notes that 16 400 jobs are created directly through SAA’s supply chain.”

Similar engagements like this one will also be held in other major areas in the country, such as Cape Town, Durban and Port Elizabeth.

Details Released Of First NBA Game In Africa

South African is once again making sporting history by becoming the first African country to host an NBA game.

Organisers of the event announced on Monday morning that tickets will go on sale from June 18.

The game is set to take place on August 1 at Ellis Park Arena in Johannesburg.

The teams that will be taking each other on will comprise of “Team Africa” which will be made up of players from Africa and second-generation African players such as Luol Deng from South Sudan who will captain the team as as Serge Ibaka from Congo-Brazaville and Gorgui Dieng from Senegal.

The other team is referred to as “Team World” will be made of Chris Paul, Bradley Beal and Kenneth Faried.

The game will be played in support of Boys and Girls Clubs of South Africa, SOS Children’s Villages Asssociation and the Nelson Mandela Foundation.

Supersport will broadcast the game while tickets to the event can be purchased on Computicket.

AU Urges Delegates To Deepen Africa's Economic Integration And Unity

Delegates attending the African Union Summit in South Africa have been urged to use the meeting to deepen the continent’s economic integration and unity at a time when the vision of Agenda 2063 is taking shape.

The summit also takes place at a time the continent grapples with terrorism, political instability and sluggish economic growth.

The summit is being held under the theme “Year of Women’s Empowerment and Development towards Africa’s Agenda 2063″. The focus is on the financial inclusion of women in key industries such as agro processing and mining.

There will also be discussions on the continent’s economic performance. The AU says although overall growth rate is short of the targeted seven percent, Africa has consistently been growing at an unprecedented average rate of four to five percent over the last decade.

This growth has mainly been driven by prudent macroeconomic policies, high commodity prices, investment in infrastructure, diversification of trading partners and increasing domestic demand.

The AU Commission Deputy Chairperson Erastus Mwencha told delegates on Sunday that if this pattern of growth continues, Africa can reduce widespread poverty in the next two decades.

He said 2015 is a “pivotal year” for sustainable development and poverty reduction on the continent.

“In fact, through the adoption of the post-2015 development agenda, the international community is rallying together to respond in a transformative manner to fundamental challenges facing the world today, eradicating poverty, reducing conflicts and insecurity,” Mwencha said.

It’s highly likely that the summit will also discuss the deteriorating political situation in Burundi. Burundian President Pierre Nkuruziza’s decision to run for a third presidential term has sparked violent and deadly protests in the capital Bujumbura. The decision has also led to calls by some African leaders for elections in that country to be postponed.

On Sunday, the summit started with the 30th Ordinary Session of the Permanent Representatives Committee (PRC) which ends on Monday at the Department of International Relations and Cooperation, in Pretoria.

The AU said the PRC would discuss items on the agenda in preparation for the 25th AU Summit to be submitted to the Executive Council for adoption.

Mwencha said African leaders will discuss ways to find a lasting solution to the crisis in Burundi, urging delegates to support that country as it grapples with political instability.

Meanwhile, Brand South Africa, together with the Department of International Relations and Cooperation and South African Tourism, also hosted media tours ahead of the summit.

Authorities said the objective of the tours was to profile a country with a rich history of diverse cultures, a land of possibility and opportunity, as well as a proud heritage that continues to shape South Africa’s journey to a thriving democracy.

The tours also included a visit to inner city Johannesburg which showcased how a nation’s competitiveness is born from its cities.

President Zuma Appoints 6 Judges

Four judges and two advocates have been appointed as judges to high courts around the country, the presidency said on Monday.

President Jacob Zuma, on the advice of the Judicial Service Commission, appointed Judges Nambitha Dambuza and Rammaka Steven Mathopo as Judges to the Supreme Court of Appeal, Bloemfontein, spokesperson Harold Maloka said in a statement.

Judge Achmat Naaim Jappie was appointed Judge President of the KwaZulu-Natal Division of the High Court in Pietermaritzburg,

Judge Ephraim Mampuru Makgoba was appointed Judge President of the Limpopo Division of the High Court in Polokwane.

Advocate Gerald Hercules Bloem SC was appointed Judge of the Eastern Cape Division of the High Court in Grahamstown, and Advocate Selby Mfanelo Mbenenge SC as Judge of the Eastern Cape Division of the High Court in Bhisho.

All the appointments would be with effect from July 1.
