How to effectively #detox and get geared for work after the festive holiday

After feasting on tons of goodies during the festive season, it is time to kickstart and refresh your body before going back to work. One way of doing this is by detoxing.

FLUSH OUT TOXINS

According to Norma Mangesi, a dietician, detox refers to removing toxic waste materials from the body. She says because of the kind of lifestyles we lead, our bodies get more susceptible to all sorts of toxins. Norma says this is the reason why it is crucial to detox your body every once in a while so that harmful toxins get flushed out.

"Our body is constantly working to dismiss toxins and unwanted matter from its systems. Over time, the body gets run down from unhealthy food choices, alcohol, caffeine, drugs, stress and environmental toxins that are a part of our lives."

ORGANS UNDER PRESSURE

She says when our vital organs are placed under too much pressure and unable to work efficiently, illness and disease can appear. Not taking time to cleanse the body and nurture these vital organs can result in sicknesses.

The body eliminates toxins through the kidneys, intestines, lungs, lymphatic system, skin and liver, which is the body's detoxification organ.

"However, when these systems are compromised, impurities aren't properly filtered and the body is adversely affected," explains Norma.

She adds that detoxing also helps with health issues, including unexplained fatigue, sluggish elimination, irritated skin, allergies, low-grade infection, puffy eyes or bags under the eyes, bloating, menstrual problems and mental confusion.

SIGNS YOUR BODY NEEDS DETOXING

You are always feeling tired, stressed and overwhelmed. You always have headaches. You often have skin breakouts including dark spots.

You seem to pick up sicknesses like colds, flus, bugs and viruses easily and are often on medication. You are carrying excess body weight. You often feel emotionally unstable, depressed, unmotivated and lack energy.
