#Cosatu's first female president #ZingiswaLosi is committed to women empowerment

Zingiswa Losi was nominated unopposed at Cosatu's 13th National Congress in Midrand on Tuesday morning.

With an extensive resume as a unionist, Losi – the former second Deputy President of Cosatu – has been described as the perfect person to lead the federation because she knows it "inside out".

Here are four things you might not know about Losi:

1. Her political career started at the age of 10

Losi hails from a family of activists and naturally, she became politically conscious at the tender age of 10.

"I become politically aware at the age of 10 when my two brothers went into exile and little did I know that, I would follow them when I grew up," she said in a biography.

She cut her political teeth in the Congress of SA Students (Cosas).

2. She's a trained soldier

Losi is a trained soldier and served in the South African Defence Force for three years.

3. She ran for ANC Deputy Secretary-General in 2017

Losi ran against Jessie Duarte for the position of ANC Deputy Secretary-General, but ultimately lost by 484 votes.

4. She's committed to women empowerment

Losi has long been an advocate for women empowerment and has made it her mission to ensure that more women ascend up the leadership ranks at the federation. Her appointment as President will surely go a long way to realising this goal.

"I would love to see women taking their rightful place in the federation, not for the purposes of achieving gender equality, but for the transformation of the broader society. This will go a long way towards eradicating the patriarchal tendencies that still exist in our society," she said.
