Long jumper Luvo Manyonga has waited four years to shake off his
demons and that moment came on Saturday night as he won a silver medal
at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio.
An agonising one centimetre stood between Manyonga and a fairytale
ending not even Hollywood would have dreamed up.
But even then, those 10mm somehow added to the drama that is
Manyonga's life story as an Olympic silver medal wouldn't even have
been a remote possibility just a few years ago.
Four years ago the 25 year old lanky long jump star was banned by
Athletics South Africa after testing positive for Tik.
Manyonga, who is based at the University of Pretoria's high
performance centre, dusted himself off and now finds himself in Rio
with a story to inspire.

"Will the real Manchester United please stand up"
I wouldn't call it the game of the weekend, but Manchester United's
trip to Bournemouth will determine how further Jose Mourinho can take
this ailing giant.
Bournemouth welcome United to town but this is the first time their
fans will get to see a real 'Manchester United' side in action.
Mourinho is going to walk out of the Vitality stadium dugout on his
opening Premier League assignment as Manchester United boss. His squad
will be buoyed by the arrivals of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Henrikh
Mkhitaryan and Eric Bailly – with the promise of the suspended Paul
Pogba to come against Southampton next week.
It will be a match that the Red Devils fight to win back their hard to
please fans who will endure this campaign without Champions League
football.
Last time they had no power, no leadership, no character, no fight,
and no hope. Now they have all of it in spades.
I reckon they now have it all. But will they impress against Bournemouth?

This, perhaps, is the most anticipated English Premier League season

Antonio Conte and Juergen Klopp will all we competing for the same
silverware; the one that is currently in the custody of Claudio
Ranieri. Also, don't forget the good old Arsene Wenger of Arsenal.

How micro jobbing can impact the economy
Thousands of young graduates can’t find jobs in South Africa. Unemployment in the country in general is a significant problem, with the current rate at 26.7%. In fact, analysts warn that the unemployment crisis is one of the government’s most pressing challenges following the municipal elections earlier this month.
At the same time, South Africa is not equipped to enable a graduate to become economically active. Often the skills learned at educational institutions are based on theory, and employers seek practical work based experience that graduates just don’t have. There is also a lack of artisanal training for those who don’t attend tertiary institutions to be able to upskill in order to find sustainable employment.

Economic transactions fall significantly in July
Economic transactions declined significantly in July, recording a real
value fall of -0.2% on a year-on-year basis, according to the latest
BankservAfrica Economic Transaction Index (BETI) – a measure of all
South African interbank transactions under R5 million. This was also
the most significant fall on every measure and for all usual periods
for the BETI.
"The quarterly and monthly levels also declined by -3% and -1.2%
respectively. July seems to have been a particularly weak month with
economic transactional activity closely aligned with January and May's
low figures," says Dr Caroline Belrose, Head of Fraud and Data
Analytics at BankservAfrica.
The BETI data reveals that the quarterly drop is the biggest decline
in 18 months, indicating that SA's economic activity is dramatically
slowing again. "This data shows there is a broader slowdown amongst
all of the country's main economic sectors at present," says Mike
Schüssler, Chief Economist at Economists dotcoza.
He explains that while GDP showed that the large drop in mining caused
the economic decline in the first quarter, the BETI now indicates a
broader economic slowdown in the third quarter after a more positive
second quarter.
Electronic credit transfers via electronic funds transfer (EFT) did
not show any nominal growth at all, while normal debit orders were
down, indicating a long-term decline in credit growth.
"The higher interest rates and slow economic growth is slowing
consumer spending which will, in all likelihood, continue in the
short-term," says Schüssler.
Only real time via electronic clearing showed a meaningful increase.
However, this could be the result of the general shift away from
cheque-based transactions.
In line with July's data, the volume of transactions going through the
payment system via BankservAfrica declined by -1.2%, according to Dr
Belrose. The total nominal value before standardisation also showed a
decline. The standardised value of the BETI was R749 billion.
While the second quarter gross domestic product (GDP) growth is likely
to be far more positive than the negative first quarter figures, the
data suggests that the economy is off to a bad start with low levels
of transactions likely to continue into the third quarter.
"July was certainly a very weak month. While the South African economy
may have shown a glimmer of hope, there is still cause for concern,"
concludes Schüssler.
