#GirlTalkZA: Introduction to passion #investment

Stocks, bonds, funds, ETFs – traditional assets kept in a diversified portfolio. But what about stamps, antique furniture, Chinese ceramics, classic cars, art, and wine?

Demand for passion investing has increased steadily as the income of HNWI and UHNWIs has grown in both developed and emerging economies. But what does passion investing deliver that nothing else can?

The joy of ownership

Passion investing, especially when done directly rather than through an investment fund, has a tangibility and intimacy that no other asset can match.

Love of the craft

The things we're often the most passionate are the things that, despite how good we are in other areas in our life, remain tantalizing beyond reach. Each passion investment has its own unique beauty and a very personal wonder for an investor which goes beyond dividends, stock charts, and financial reports. Some of it is about a return on investment – but a lot of it is about an appreciation of the diversity of human creativity and imagination.

Impressive and countercyclical returns

More and more wealth managers are being asked by clients to invest some of their portfolio in their passion. In the way that gold is often used as a hedge against inflation and volatility, passion investments often move in opposite directions to the main financial indices.

A long term hold

Passion investing is not for the faint-hearted nor is it for an investor looking for a quick return.

Passion investing does not produce an income from your ownership of an asset. You will have to hold on to your investment for a long time, sometimes in excess of 10 years, to make profit when the cost of purchase, the cost of ownership, the cost of selling, and the effect of inflation are taken into consideration.

Caveat emptor

Most passion markets are opaque. Most sales are private. Price discovery is difficult. Mix all of that together with the money needed to invest in a true object of desire and mistakes can easily be made.

There is a multitude of new and exciting ways to invest your money today. Here at Planet of finance we keep track of the most relevant developments to signal them for you. We are the ultimate meeting place to discover, connect and learn about the latest topics relating to your financial wealth.

We hope you find the guide useful and informative and feel free to visit our website to learn how to best manage your wealth and achieve financial freedom.

How to effectively #detox and get geared for work after the festive holiday

After feasting on tons of goodies during the festive season, it is time to kickstart and refresh your body before going back to work. One way of doing this is by detoxing.

FLUSH OUT TOXINS

According to Norma Mangesi, a dietician, detox refers to removing toxic waste materials from the body. She says because of the kind of lifestyles we lead, our bodies get more susceptible to all sorts of toxins. Norma says this is the reason why it is crucial to detox your body every once in a while so that harmful toxins get flushed out.

"Our body is constantly working to dismiss toxins and unwanted matter from its systems. Over time, the body gets run down from unhealthy food choices, alcohol, caffeine, drugs, stress and environmental toxins that are a part of our lives."

ORGANS UNDER PRESSURE

She says when our vital organs are placed under too much pressure and unable to work efficiently, illness and disease can appear. Not taking time to cleanse the body and nurture these vital organs can result in sicknesses.

The body eliminates toxins through the kidneys, intestines, lungs, lymphatic system, skin and liver, which is the body's detoxification organ.

"However, when these systems are compromised, impurities aren't properly filtered and the body is adversely affected," explains Norma.

She adds that detoxing also helps with health issues, including unexplained fatigue, sluggish elimination, irritated skin, allergies, low-grade infection, puffy eyes or bags under the eyes, bloating, menstrual problems and mental confusion.

SIGNS YOUR BODY NEEDS DETOXING

You are always feeling tired, stressed and overwhelmed. You always have headaches. You often have skin breakouts including dark spots.

You seem to pick up sicknesses like colds, flus, bugs and viruses easily and are often on medication. You are carrying excess body weight. You often feel emotionally unstable, depressed, unmotivated and lack energy.

The list is out! #Forbes announces world's highest paid musicians of 2018 #FridayFeeling

Forbes has released its annual data, ranking the highest-paid musicians of 2018.

According to Forbes, the 10 highest-paid musicians pulled in $886 million, about the same as 2017's combined tally.

Forbes also mentioned that although the first four names on the list can all be broadly defined as pop, the rest offer a wide range of genres. There's hip-hop (Jay-Z), country (Luke Bryan), electronic (Calvin Harris) and even heavy metal (Metallica).

"There is not, however, much gender balance," writes Zack O'Malley Greenburg of Forbes. "Just 6 of the top 30 are women, led by Katy Perry (No. 5)."

She is one of the hardest-working names in Forbes' rankings.

"She played 80 dates during our scoring period, grossing over $1 million per night. She's followed closely by Taylor Swift (No. 6), who started her Reputation Stadium Tour at the tail end of our 12-month range."

There were quite a few well-known near misses as well.

"Rihanna, J. Cole, Dr. Dre and Nas all earned over $30 million, but not quite enough to crack our top 30. And some on the list could have ranked higher under a different classification system: Jay-Z and Beyoncé both made the cut as solo acts while touring and releasing a joint album; together, the Carters earned $136.5 million, more than any single act on our list."

The World's Highest-Paid Musicians of 2018:

1. U2 ($118 million)

2. Coldplay ($115.5 million)

3. Ed Sheeran ($110 million)

Young professionals in South Africa are experiencing increased financial stress: Report

The survey – conducted with nearly 2,500 of Profmed's professional membership base – showed that the stress is attributed to work-related factors. More than 50% of young professionals said they were more stressed in 2018 than the previous year. The CEO of Profmed, Graham Anderson, explains:

"The rise in financial stress is not surprising, considering the economic conditions which continue to take their toll on every sector of South African society."

A cause of concern is the increase in the number of professionals who said they experienced higher levels of stress-induced anxiety and depression, with approximately 40% of young professionals claiming to feel detached and wanted to be left alone. This was linked to the higher demands from their careers, which included working overtime.

Other factors include having less time to spend with family or friends, as well as the increase in workload. Despite that, at least three quarters of those interviewed believed they are able to handle stress well. Compared to the data collected during 2017, less than 10% took leave due to stress-related illness.

On the plus side, young professionals are learning to manage the effects of work-related stress and are actively doing something about it. Most rely on exercise to see them through the dark times. Anderson added:

"Exercise improves not only your physical wellbeing but also your mental health. Studies have shown that exercise releases endorphins, which increases levels of focus and improves your sleep, all of which gives you a greater sense of control over your life."

Most young professionals put up with the stress to cash out a large paycheck at the end of the month. A study conducted by recruitment firm Michael Page earlier this year collected data from more than 100 000 candidates which covered more than 1,500 professional jobs.

A BI analyst, for example, earned between R600 000 and R800 000 annually, while a network architect could bank on R700 000 to R1.m per year.

#Unisa warns of fake online registration sites. #MatricResults

The University of South Africa (Unisa) is warning students to be aware of fake online registration sites.

Martin Ramotshela, a Unisa spokesperson, revealed on Wednesday that an advert was placed on Twitter by an internet café in Durban by the name of Lorekom International. The advert claimed that it assists with Unisa online registrations.

"Lorekom International has used the logo of Unisa in the advert; thereby creating the false impression that the advert and the services on offer are endorsed by Unisa. We distance ourselves from this advert. Unisa strongly condemns the use of its logo without its permission. Unisa cautions its current and prospective students to be on the look-out for predatory individuals and organisations who purport to be offering services on behalf of the university," Ramotshela said.

All services of the university to its students are offered either online through its website (www.unisa.ac.za) or at the Unisa service centres spread across the country.

In the case of Lorekom International, Unisa has established that the company charges R60 per student to process a Unisa Online Registration. Ramotshela said it further undertakes in its advert to fetch students from anywhere they are and bring them to the Internet Café for the registration transaction.

"Unisa thus urges students to exercise greater caution before parting with money or getting into vehicles of people unknown to them," he advised.
