#EFF leader Julius Malema Sworn in as Pan African Parliament Member

Economic Freedom Fighters leader Julius Malema swapped his red overall for a smart business suit and tie to be sworn in as a member of the Pan African Parliament (PAP) on Monday.

He replaced his colleague Floyd Shavambu on the 255-member body.

Malema says the PAP must play a significant role on the continent.

"It's an honour and we think it's a responsibility that we have to take very seriously."

He says PAP members must ensure that African leaders are held accountable and they must ensure democracy flourishes in Africa against dictatorship.

He is working on getting legislative teeth for the PAP by confronting those leaders who are blocking this because they are afraid of being called to account.

#GrandWest upgrades Consumer Studies classrooms at #Saxonsea High School in #Atlantis

Saxonsea High School in Atlantis is receiving a R300 000 upgrade to their Consumer Studies classroom, thanks to a generous donation from GrandWest.

The Afrikaans-medium school was established in 1985 for the communities of Saxonsea Atlantis, Mamre, Pella and Darling. Despite the many challenges these areas face, Saxonsea High School learners got a 95,5% pass rate last year. Impressively, this school has managed to achieve an 80% or higher matric pass rate since 2012.

The donation from GrandWest will pay for eight four-plate stoves, a fridge, a microwave, 15 workstations and some kitchen appliances. It will also cover the general refurbishment of the classroom, including painting, improved lighting, new cupboards, fixing kitchen sinks and taps, and repairing the damaged floors and ceilings.

"As GrandWest we wholeheartedly believe that education is a critical lever to achieve sustainable social upliftment," says Heidi Edson, Group Socio Economic Development Specialist at Sun International. "By creating education opportunities for the youth in our communities, we are ensuring a growing pool of talented and skilled people which companies like ours can employ in the future."

Saxonsea High School principal, Deon Claassen, said: "Our community of Atlantis struggles with gang-related violence. For a lot of our learners school is the only place they feel safe and have the opportunity to develop into responsible young adults. Our social-economic level in Atlantis is also very low. Some kids rely on the school feeding scheme for something to eat, and parents struggle to buy the equipment the children need for school. All these factors make this major donation to our school even more significant."

The Consumer Studies teacher, Franco de Nooi, said: "We are delighted by this meaningful donation to our school. Our Consumer Studies classroom needed the upgrade. It will be very beneficial to our learners."

#FNB launches SA’s first biometric mini-ATM

FNB said on Monday it had become the first bank in South Africa to introduce a mini-ATM that uses biometrics as a means of validation for consumers.

The device functions as a self-service kiosk from which customers can make withdrawals, transfers and payments, view statements, purchase airtime and electricity, and perform card cancellations.

It also allows consumers to open new accounts by reading their thumb print.

"The TouchPoint validates a customer's identity by scanning a fingerprint placed on the biometric reader and it can detect false fingerprints to prevent fraud," said Lee-Anne van Zyl, CEO of FNB Points of Presence.

"The identity of the customer is then verified with the Department of Home Affairs to ensure the self-service account opening complies with the relevant laws."

FNB said the device had been successfully piloted in Gauteng since November last year and the bank aimed to place the devices in branches, community retailers in townships and rural areas across South Africa.

"The introduction of biometric validation on self-service devices is an important step to making banking much more accessible to South African communities," said Van Zyl.

"This is a continuation of our journey to broaden financial inclusion."
