Sleep more to boast mental health

Not only do you feel more refreshed after a good night’s sleep, but it will boost your mental health too.

A study conducted by Silentnight and the University of Leeds, England, warns that less than six hours shut eye a night could lead to higher risks of depression or anxiety. More worryingly, the experts found that more than a quarter of British people are surviving on just five hours sleep a night.

Dr. Anna Weighall, who conducted the study, stressed the link between rest and emotional wellbeing as the research monitored various postcodes across the nation.

From the findings, Dr. Weighall discovered a bi-directional relationship which showed a correlation between mental welfare and sleep.

“Firstly, we see the relationship between where people live vs how much they sleep, with this the second observation from the research shows the link between sleepless nights and the rise in mental health,” she explained.

“Areas where we see a drop in the number of hours people sleep are more inclined to struggle with mental health problems.”

Not only is mental health affected by lack of sleep, but health issues are worsened too. Dr. Weighall continued to share that the links between sleep and psychical health are also clearly shown though the survey, backing up former research that has linked it to cardiovascular problems and metabolic disorders like obesity and diabetes.

“Our research, conducted in collaboration with Silentnight, showed how from a survey of 1000 UK adults we found a strong relationship between poor sleep and reduced health related quality of life,” she stressed.

For anyone who is battling mental health problems and wishes to get more shut eye at night, Dr. Weighall recommends trying to set a regular bed time and rising time in the morning. Anxiety and stress can see sleep routines compromised, but when suffering such problems this is when people need more sleep, preferably six to eight hours.

Silentnight’s sleep expert, Dr. Nerina Ramlakhan, also shared her words of advice.

“Sleep is vital for healing the body on every level and not just physical,” she said. “When we don’t get deep restorative sleep, over a period of time we can start to feel symptoms of anxiety and depression…

“Good sleep heals mind, body and spirit. When we get the right amount of deep sleep, this rebalances every cell, tissue and organ system in the body. Levels of hormones and neurotransmitters are restored and rebalanced and we wake up with good energy.”

She further advises to avoid checking the time during the night and to leave technology out of the bedroom.

South Africa expresses solidarity with Turkey

The South African Government has sent its condolences to the families of those who died after a terror attack at Turkey’s Ataturk Airport on Tuesday night.

Following a gun and bomb attack at the Istanbul airport, 41 people were killed – 13 of them foreign nationals – while 230 more were injured. Early indications are that this was an attack by the so-called Islamic State, but there is still not absolute clarity on who conducted the attacks.

“On behalf of the Government and the people of Republic of South Africa, His Excellency President Jacob Zuma has extended his heartfelt condolences to the Government and the people of the Republic of Turkey,” said President Jacob Zuma, in the aftermath of the attacks.

“South Africa shares in the grief of the Turkish people and the international community following the substantial loss of life and wishes the injured survivors a speedy recovery. Terrorism in any form and from whichever quarter cannot be condoned,” added Zuma.

The South African government has condemned the attacks, and expressed solidarity with Turkey.

“South Africa stands firmly with the international community in condemning all forms of terrorism and stands in solidarity with the Government of the Republic of Turkey and all countries affected as they mourn the death of their citizens,” added Zuma.

The Department of International Relations and Cooperation has revealed that it has been in contact with the Consular Services and South African Embassy in Ankara. At this juncture, no South African casualties have been reported but the investigations are still ongoing in this regard.

Cape Town City FC officially launched #IamCityFC

Cape Town Stadium (and the ever loud Twitter) was abuzz with activity on Wednesday as Cape Town City FC was officially launched by new club boss John Comitis.

Cape Town City FC was born after Comitis concluded the purchase of Absa PSL mid table specialists Mpumalanga Black Aces from the Morfou brothers recently.

The big boss was on hand to address invited guests, dignitaries and members of the media, where he showed off the new-look PSL outfit, with players and members of the technical team present.

The club also took the opportunity to unveil its new logo as well as their signature kit as Comitis explained the importance of including Cape Town’s community in the club’s future.

“It was always going to be about Cape Town, it was always going to be about how we can put a club out here that people are going to feel like this is their club, it’s a sense that they feel a part of it, something that they feel either through the history of their football in this city or otherwise from their aspirations in the future, they’ll feel like this club can fill that gap. There’s no doubt that there was that gap,’’ Comitis said.

Its a great thing that the number of football clubs from the Cape plying in the top tier are increasing. Well, winning the title will be another huddle. All the best lads!

5 reasons an employer hasnt called back after a job interview

Waiting for a response is stressful and it’s easy to let your mind run wild when coming up with reasons the employer hasn’t called. Was it your hair? Should you have answered a certain question differently? Put the kabosh on your what-if thought process; usually an employer hasn’t called back due to one of these five reasons.

1. Your Contact Info Was Wrong or Lost

A cover-letter must always include your contact information, even though you already put it on your resume. Prepare for the possibility that your papers might get separated so the hiring manager isn’t left without a way to contact you. Also, be sure to triple check your email address and phone number that you provide — there are few things more careless than providing incorrect contact information

2. They’re Taking Their Time

If your position is a newly created role the employer may not be in a rush to fill it; they’ll want to see a range of applicants before selecting one. Pay attention to the date the position was first listed — if you applied soon after it was posted, the employer may be holding out on making a decision until the job has been open for a certain amount of time.

3. There Aren’t Enough Hours in the Day

Keep in mind that your employment isn’t the only thing the hiring manager has on her plate, not to mention there are several people involved in hiring decisions. If it’s a particularly busy time in the industry then hiring could be a lower priority than usual.

4. An Offer Has Already Been Extended . . .

. . . to someone else. If the position has already been offered to another candidate and is waiting for that person to accept the offer, they’ll withhold from making contact with other applicants in the running. This process can take longer than you’d think — the preferred candidate could be on vacation or trying to negotiate salary. An employer won’t let you know a position has been filled until it’s been formalized.

5. The Position No Longer Exists

Shake-ups can occur that reorganize departments and eliminate the position you interviewed for. This kind of change can cause higher-ups to be distracted and they might not get around to announcing the news to candidates as soon as you’d hope.

How to whiten yellow teeth

Teeth are an important part of your appearance. The first thing people notice about teeth is their colour. Genetics, food, drinks and oral hygiene can cause your teeth to turn yellow. Try the following remedies to whiten them:

BAKING SODA
One of the most effective ways to remove unwanted stains is using baking soda. But limit this to once a month, as doing it too often will also remove some enamel.

How to use it:
In a small cup, mix half a teaspoon of baking soda with a few drops of water or lemon to form a paste. Apply the paste to your teeth using a toothbrush or your fingers.

COCONUT OIL RINSE
You can also rinse your mouth with coconut oil. The acid in coconut oil will help whiten your teeth.

How to use it:
In the morning, before you brush your teeth, take a tablespoon of coconut oil and put it in your mouth. Move the oil around your teeth for 10 to 15 minutes. Spit it out, rinse with water, and brush your teeth.

New Xhosa drama on the cards #MzansiMagic

A new Xhosa drama debuts on Mzansi Magic in early July and it’s tackling one of the world’s most taboo topics. Something no-one talks about mommy’s boys who love their mother “too much”.

It’s called Isikizi which means “disgrace” in Xhosa and centres round the honourable but impulsive Sizwe, played Phila Madlingozi.

According to Reneilwe Sema, M-Net’s Head of Drama for Local Entertainment Channels, “This is essentially a love story, but a demented love story that is going to get people talking about things that are seen as taboo in our society. We want viewers to be conflicted about who the hero of this story is…”

Isikizi will feature some of class South African talent actors, from Tina Jaxa, Timmy Kwebulana, Zandile Msutwana, Phila Madlingozi, Chris Gxalaba, Bongo Mbutuma, Ayanda Dlamini, Andrea Dondolo, Vicky Kente to Khayakazi Kula.

Coffee linked to improving liver health

Coffee can help the liver fight off disease, new research has discovered.

The World Health Organization recently went back on its previous findings that coffee affects bladder cancer by commending the drink for helping protect against certain cancers which attack the liver and womb.

To add to this, the British Liver Trust has published an 83-page report on all the existing research on the health benefits of coffee, such as warding off fatal health problems like liver disease and liver fibrosis. Even more impressive, it’s been found that those who have already been diagnosed with liver disease can slow the progression by sipping the hot beverage.

“At last, physicians have found a lifestyle habit that is good for your liver,” Professor Graeme Alexander, a liver expert at Cambridge University Hospitals, said.

“The evidence in this report shows that drinking coffee can protect you from developing liver disease and, in addition, reduces the risk of progressive disease for those already affected. We have an epidemic of liver disease in the U.K. and the numbers affected are growing at an alarming rate.”

The World Health Organization’s new report, published in the Lancet Oncology medical journal, saw the risk of liver cancer decrease by 15 per cent for each cup of coffee consumed a day. While it’s still unclear how this is possible, experts suspect it’s to do with the molecule found it caffeine – paraxanthine, which may slow the growth of tissues that harm the liver. Furthermore, the substances kahweol and cafestol – also found in coffee – are believed to play a role too.

While coffee isn’t a cure, Andrew Langford, chief executive of the British Liver Trust, insists prevention is better than nothing.

“‘Although the liver is remarkably resilient and can regenerate if given time to recover, by the time most people have signs and symptoms of liver damage it is often irreversible,” he added.

“It’s known as a silent killer because it has few symptoms. Three-quarters of people already have late-stage liver disease when they are first diagnosed – by this time, for many, it is too late.”

However it’s important to take note of the European Food Safety Authority’s recommendation of 400mg a day, the same found in five espressos.

Highlands Park get City of Ekurhuleni nod

It seems like the City of Ekurhuleni will not let Highlands Park endure a 'solitary confinement' situation in the Absa PSL.

This is after Newly the City of Ekurhuleni’s pledge to support the club as they look to hold onto their PSL status in the upcoming season. Highlands Park secured their berth after a superb winning streak in the playoffs.

Ekurhuleni’s mayor, Mondli Gugumbele, has vowed to help secure sponsorships for the club as they prepare for a season in the top-flight.

“As a city we will make sure that there are enough sponsors to run the team and make sure that they are competing well in the PSL,” he stated.

Gugumbele went on to say that he also plans to upgrade the Makhulong Stadium, where Highlands will play some of their home games.

“That's why we will also upgrade the Makulong Stadium to meet the standard so that we keep the team here and the supporters happy and close to the team,” the Mayor concluded.

The newly promoted lads will be using Makhulong Stadium in Tembisa and Sinaba Stadium in Benoni for their games in the PSL next season.

We all wait to see how the journey is going to be like for Highlands Park....

10 ways to make this week very productive

This past weekend was indeed a fruitful one as so much happened. Black Coffee made history once again, Bafana Bafana bagged the COSAFA Cup, The Boks beat Ireland to clinch the series and the Proteas failed making the Tri Series final.

Anyway focus now shifts to this week.

Achieving a productive week is challenging but here are some tips to be productive and enjoy your week. It’s all about  achieving more by doing less.

1. Focus on a single task.

It’s been proven over and over that if you have two things to get done, completing them one at a time will not only allow you to finish sooner, it’ll also increase the precision of your work.

2. Learn to say “no.”

In his new book, The Power of No, James Altucher, bestselling author of Choose Yourself, dives head first into this practice. He states, “a well-placed ‘No’ can not only save you time and trouble, it can save your life.”

3. Plan to be productive.

A productive week starts on Monday morning, as long as you’ve got a good plan in place. Things will always come up unexpectedly, but having a schedule can help. If you know you tend to dawdle during free time, schedule it down to the minute.

4. Start the week before.

As you’re writing out your calendar, aim to have your work completed on Thursday. Friday can then be used to concentrate on any tasks that have come up unexpectedly, allowing you to finish the week strong.

5. Get it out of the way.

Tackle what you don’t want to do first so that you don’t waste any mental energy resenting it. You’ll be so relieved that the rest of the day will seem simple.

6. Become vulnerable.

Everything is better when you put another set of eyes on it. If you don’t have an accountability partner, yesterday was the best time to get one. The next best time is right now. Share your calendar and to-do list while being open to constructive criticism.

7. Play the comparison game.

Compare your weekly calendar or productivity plan to others’ and learn from their best practices. Many of my best habits have been acquired from other people’s methods through simple observation.

8. Complete is better than perfect.

Striving for excellence is a noble goal, but obsessive perfectionism is the ultimate enemy of productivity (second only to laziness). Wouldn’t you rather accomplish 100 things this week, all done well, than 15 things that are perfect?

9. Start early.

The sooner you get started, the more you can get done. Learn to be an early riser and take care of personal issues and breakfast before you begin. Fewer distractions coupled with more time during the day equals more completed tasks.

10. Schedule down time.

Work hard and play hard, but don’t mix the two. Be fully engaged wherever you are. When you’re working, go all out, then schedule some time each day and on the weekends to stay far, far away from work. You deserve a break and your brain does too.

#Brexit: British teams eligible to play in #UEFA Champions league

So UK has voted to leave the European Union and many football fans are wondering if this means that English teams will no longer compete in European competitions such as the UEFA Champions League.

Well, we all love watching Arsenal, the two Manchester clubs, Liverpool, Chelsea sweating it out in arguably the biggest club competition in the world.

Anyway Sports immigration lawyer Maria Patsalos, from law firm Mishcon de Reya, has told the Express that England could still play in European Championships. Pheeeewww that is sigh of relief.

Ms Patsalos said the domestic clubs of non-EU members such as Switzerland and Russia are still eligible to play in the Champions League and Europa League.

She said: “Therefore, England and Premier League clubs would not be prohibited in any way in the event of a Brexit.”

The reassurance came after Liverpool played in the final of the Europa League and Manchester City reached the semi-finals of the Champions League this year.

Ms Patsalos told Express.co.uk: "Membership in the EU is not relevant to the UEFA position, as the members of UEFA are entirely separate. For example, neither Switzerland and Russia are in the EU, but are still eligible to play in European Championships such as the tournament in France this summer.”

Meanwhile, Brexit campaigners have rubbished claims that leaving the EU would stop European talent from coming to play in the Premier League.

What is UEFA and why was it created?

UEFA, also known as the Union of European Football Associations, is the governing body for football in Europe. Its headquarters are in Switzerland and its influence stretches from Iceland in the north-west to Kazakhstan - none of these three countries are in the EU.

The sporting authority represents 55 football associations and runs competitions such as the Champions League, the Euros, the Europa League and the Super Cup.

findingthings.co.za: Work together, share profits!

As much as we hate admitting it, technological advancements have seen us doing most of our stuff online. Talk of paying bills, entertainment, shopping..... the list is endless.

Well, a new website website that offers thousands of South Africans the chance to work together and share in the profits has been launched.

Yeap this one is different!

Hundreds of South Africans (soon to be thousands) have joined together to create an exciting new website called FINDINGTHINGS.co.za which is a one-stop site for finding things – where to buy things, where to go on holiday, latest restaurants in your area, jobs, hobbies, weddings, maternity, babies, cars, boats, planes……anything and everything.

It is a directory of mini-websites known as Groups. Each looks and works just like a Facebook page, and is managed and owned by someone in the community who also keeps 100% of the income. Users can post questions in their own language, chat about a subject and get responses from like-minded people.

The website is unique as it shares its profits as well as its knowledge. A spokesperson from FindingThings explains:

‘Instead of employing 2 000 people and scooping all the profits, we are giving 2 000 people the opportunity to own their own business looking after as many Groups as they can manage. Each Group will only generate between R2 000 and R3 000 pm, but part-timers can manage up to 10 with full-timers looking after 100+’

There will ultimately be a comprehensive index of information with thousands of categories. The site needs over 2000 people part time and 200 full time to all join together to create a super-index of information, with everyone benefiting from one another’s contribution.

So let's get clicking folks!

Why not try some tasty 'mogodu' this weekend

South Africans just love their meat! Whether its a nice hot braai, some sizzling steak, the famed wors or well marinated sumptuous chicken.

But why not go traditional this weekend and try some mogodu? Not just mogodu but some delicious and tasty tripe.

Ingredients
1kg cleaned sheep tripe
3 cups beef stock
1 tablespoon salt
1 onion, roughly chopped
2 pieces Star Anise
4 All Spice berries
4 pods of Cardamom
Ground black pepper
1/2 teaspoon ground coriander
1 sprig thyme, chopped
1 sprig rosemary, chopped

Method
1. Rinse and ensure the tripe is clean and then cut it (using a sharp pair of kitchen scissors) into pieces. I prefer my pieces to be relatively large, about the size of a spoon.
2. Place all the ingredients into a pot. If the beef stock doesn’t cover the tripe completely, then add a little more until it’s covered.
3. Bring the entire mixture to the boil, once boiling rapidly reduce the heat to low and allow the pot to simmer with a half open lid (or a lid with an air vent) for about 2 hours. Test the tripe, if it isn’t soft enough then let it simmer for a bit longer.
4. Remove the lid completely and increase the heat a little to reduce the liquid in the pot to a thick sauce. Only season with salt towards the end of the cooking process.

New Clover low fat milk is the real deal!

In keeping with its “Way Better®” promise and in line with the R260: Agricultural Product Standards Act passed by the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Clover has implemented a change to the fat content of its low fat milk variant. A recent Government bill, which came into effect on March 28, 2016, dictated that going forward low fat milk should contain between 0.5% and 1.5% butterfat (cream) and accordingly, milk with between 1.6% and 3.3% will fall into a new medium fat category.

As a result, and by law, Clover was faced with the option of either reducing the milk fat in its 2% low fat option, or re-categorising it as medium fat milk. After careful consideration and in consultation with consumers, the leading dairy producer has chosen to reduce the fat content to 1.5%, thereby maintaining its low fat status and minimising confusion for the health-conscious shopper.

Clover Cares

“As a favourite household brand, we make a point of meeting the specific needs of our consumers. For this reason, we conducted research with a range of individuals to ensure that the new categorisation of our milk variants will not compromise the high quality and premium taste associated with Clover dairy products.”

“After listening to what our consumers had to say, and based on their feedback, the decision was taken to retain the red ‘low fat’ label and descriptor and lower the fat formulation to 1.5%, which going forward will be in keeping with government legislation and in line with many overseas standards,” explains Clover’s Marketing Manager of Dairy, Sherian King.

Less Calories. Same Quality

The delicious taste of Clover’s milk is no doubt part of what positions Clover as one of the leading dairy producers in the world. The good news is that after conducting blind tasting with consumers, the vast majority of tasters did not taste a difference in the reduced fat milk. It’s also important to note, Clover’s full cream and fat free milk products will remain the same tasty variants as before.

Milk is often seen as a complete food due to its intrinsic properties and nutritional value. And while many consumers are unsure of the percentage of fat in full cream milk, the truth of the matter is that the fat content, in accordance with government legislation, for full cream milk is standardised by most dairies in accordance to legislation to 3.3%. “Indeed, our consumers with a preference for our low fat option or other alternatives, can rest assured that they can continue to purchase the milk they have come to know and love, without fear of compromise in Clover’s quality,” concludes Product Development Manager, Piet Laubsher.

From Farm to Table

Clover’s brand promise of “Way Better” remains firmly in place despite the adjustment to its low fat variant. Clover’s fresh milk undergoes 55 quality tests and is kept cold throughout distribution to ensure freshness. It is also sourced from specially selected farms.

“All milk is pasteurised by heating the milk in order to make it safe for human consumption. After it is pasteurised, we then use a process called bactofugation, which spins the milk so that additional bacteria can be separated and removed. While pasteurisation kills all the bacteria that can make one sick, bactofugation removes the bacteria that is safe to consume but will cause the milk to spoil. Not all companies do this, but we have invested in technology to provide consumers with better quality milk and a longer shelf life, which has now been extended from 12 to 18 days,” explains group manager for product innovation and technology, Anton Pretorius.

“As with all Clover milk products homogenisation takes place to prevent the separation of milk and fat (or cream), which creates an unwanted layer on top of milk. This is when the fat particles are broken down very finely. The milk is pumped through a tiny hole, which puts it under pressure of 250-bar. We do this so that no oily layer occurs on the top of tea or coffee, and consumers can enjoy a consistent taste throughout the use of their milk. The last thing we want is for milk to be full cream at breakfast and fat free at dinner!”

“Lastly, we fill our milk in what is called a ‘clean fill environment’. This is done so that the milk does not come into contact with airborne bacteria, because milk exposed to air spoils faster than milk kept in a clean environment. The combination of all these processes has enabled us to give the consumer the benefit of a longer shelf life.” adds Pretorius.

While it’s important to note that the requirement for reduced fat content in milk also applies to the rest of the dairy category, it is also good to know that discerning consumers can continue to enjoy the same great taste and quality that is so much a part of what we love about Clover.

"When I met Simphiwe Dana I was surprised at how chilled she is. She is a big star, but there were no diva tendencies. Her social media persona can sometimes sound antagonistic, but she is such a warm and easy person to work with," Journalist.

Sophie Ndaba

"Possibly the best person to work with. She does what needs to be done and with so much grace and a smile. Everyone who was at the shoot fell in love with her. She pays attention to people and speaks to everyone as equals. She is a real gem,"Producer.

Five beauty essentials every lady needs

Every woman wants to look and feel beautiful. Beauty starts from the inside and there are plenty of things that can be done to improve what the eye sees.

Here is a list of items one should have on hand at all times.

1. Red lipstick: The idea of applying red lipstick frightens some women. The trick is to find the right shade of red for your skin tone. Use a matching lip liner to your lipstick; this will help to lock the lipstick on your lips.
2. Brow Pencil: For years, women have been using Eyeliner on their eyebrows instead of a brow pencil. This is not correct.
The difference between the 2 is that the Eyeliner has a shiny finish and a brow pencil has a matte or powder finish.
A brow pencil looks slightly brown and an eye pencil tends to look darker or black. One needs to use a brow pencil that is a shade lighter than their hair, for a natural finish.
3. Bronzer: Most people use bronzer to contour their faces and create shadows on the chin, the cheekbone, the temples and the edge of the faces. A bronzer is meant to give a tan-like glow and shimmer.
4. A good fragrance: It has been said that a great scent tends to make a lady appear more attractive. Some women have what is called a signature scent, a perfume that they have worn for years. A scent is very personal and having at least one designer fragrance is important. Most fragrances smell different on each individual; take time in choosing the scent best for you.
5. Serum: In addition to your daily Cleanser, Toner and Exfoliator. If you are approaching the age of 30, a good Serum is essential. Most serums have anti-aging ingredients. A serum is not a replacement for your daytime or nighttime moisturizer, instead is helps target brown spots and assist with discolorations.

#Rockville season 4 coming in July

Mzansi Magic viewers around the country have been yearning the return of the renowned high stakes drama, Rockville. The wait is finally over, as season 4 promises higher drama, more action, and twisted plots from Sunday, 10 July.

The famous series, which contrasts the worlds of northern Joburg, with the adrenaline-filled, bustling streets of Soweto, sees popular stars such as Shona Ferguson play JB, Connie Ferguson as Mavis, Gail Mabalane as Vicky, and Boitumelo Thulo as Mpho return for another season alongside other senior cast members. This season also sees new characters debut with Sello Maake Ka-Ncube appear as the new villain, Rolex, and Themba Ndaba as the crooked police officer, Ngema. Another welcome inclusion is Ayanda Thabethe as the sultry temptress, Aliyah.

M-Net’s Head of Drama, Reneilwe Sema commented on what’s in store for viewers, “The theme this season is ‘journeys to redemption’. Mavis tries to redeem broken family bonds, while JB, who has lost everything, is desperate to reconnect with loved ones in the midst of startling historic revelations.”

A first for Rockville, this season also tackles a pertinent socio-economic issue which is currently very topical in South Africa – that of teenagers dating older, married men.

“This season is set apart from previous editions, in that we now have two main villains, whose paths eventually cross – making for some intense clashes,” Sema added.

Felicia reveals how her marriage almost ended

Business woman, author, motivational speaker and philanthropist Felicia Mabuza-Suttle said at some point her marriage to husband Earl Suttle almost didn’t make it. This was because of Felicia’s decision to move back to South Africa in 1990 to pursue her dream to empower South Africans through her talkshow and also take up a senior position at South African Airways.

Felicia opened up about this time in her life on SABC 1 show Zaziwa, “The move caused a rift between me and my husband, but my husband said when he was about to give it up, what helped is his involvement in The Million Man March. Minister Louis Farrakhan had a march for over a million black men in Washington in 1995 and when my husband went there he said what he heard about supporting your woman resonated with him. That’s what saved our marriage.”

Felicia said that at the time she moved despite the rift in her marriage she knew she had to follow her passion. “I was willing to give up anything for what I believed in. I think sometimes as women we need to do that, follow your passion no matter what,” she encouraged.

Felicia said after the march and six months of not seeing each other her husband came down to see her in South Africa and was impressed at the work she was doing and they rekindled their love and have been strong since.

Felicia and Earl have been married since 1976 and have two daughter Lindiwe and Zanele.

10 tricks to get top exam marks

You may have made it through high school with a pretty loose studying strategy in place, but hitting the books at tertiary level requires much more commitment … and a much tighter strategy too.

“Preparing for the exam season is not only about putting in the study hours, its making sure you are well during an often stressful and overwhelming time,” says Craig McMurray, CEO of Respublica, South Africa’s leading provider of student accommodation.

Respublica has scoped out what the experts say, and has these great ideas to help you get ready for the upcoming exam season.

Adopt the 50/10 approach

Looking at that pile of books you need to work through for just one subject is a pretty daunting thing – but if you plan to work through it in focused 50 minute chunks, broken up with 10 minute breaks, the task doesn’t seem quite so intimidating.

Take technology in hand

If you’re using a computer to study, the temptation will be strong to check social media or disappear down the rabbit hole that started with legitimate studying content – so choose one of the many apps out there to block your access to social media sites, messaging apps and other digital distractions.

Organise your study space

Make sure that you’ve got a dedicated study space, whether it’s at home or in your room at your res. And, however bored you get with your desk, don’t be tempted to try study in bed or on that comfy couch – you’re likely to get distracted or even fall asleep.

Mad about music?

Studying with background music can help, but make sure you choose the right tunes! Ambient, instrumental or classical music should be on your playlist, and if you set up a 50-minute playlist, it will be your cue to take that well-earned break.

Get a study buddy

One of the great advantages of living in a res is that you can get together with friends to study. The other person doesn’t need to be doing the same course as you, but a study buddy is a lot like a gym buddy: they keep you honest, they help you relaxed during study breaks, and they help you avoid feeling alone while you’re learning.

Take turns teaching

You could also find someone doing the same course as you are, and split the study material, promising to teach it to one another. That way, you have to know enough about the subject to share it properly – or you’re getting the benefits of your own personal tutor.

Divide and conquer

If you’ve got a bunch of facts to learn, try come up with mnemonics to help you remember them all. If it’s concepts you’re working with, make sure you understand them properly before moving on – as this understanding sticks with you more than a list of facts will.

Close the books

Don’t just study by reading and re-reading the content you’ve got to cover, and asking yourself questions while your text books are open. Learn your work, close the books, and go over what you’ve studied in your mind or by writing it out. Work through old exams if you can get them, to test your knowledge properly.

Stay healthy

If you’re going to stay on top your study game, make sure you take care of your health and well-being too. Make sure you make time to eat properly – it’s also a great way to take a break from your studies. Drink lots of water, and stay away from alcohol during the study season – obviously you want to avoid hangovers, but there’s nothing fun about dehydration either.

Ease in the exercise

If you’ve got a good training regime going, keep it up to de-stress and take a break.  If you’re not a gym bunny (and that’s ok!), take a walk or go for a swim to get take a break from your studies and dust out a few mental cobwebs.

Whether you’re in res, flat sharing or at home, creating a study space and allowing enough time to prepare for the exam season is crucial to your success. Look for accommodation providers, like Respublica, that provide quiet, private spaces or study rooms for study groups, access to WiFi and recreation rooms for taking those as important study breaks.

Handy things to do on your #smartphone

Let's face it, there are times when we find ourselves staring at our smart phones without any prospect of doing anything. That is because we are so addicted to these gadgets but hey, there comes a time when smart phones become just phones.

Geeeez, let me take on a rundown on some activities you can do on your phone when boredom creeps in.

Can I get a Contact?

A sizeable number us don't quiet understand the importance of backing up data on our phones. It doesnt take a rocket scientist to tell you that when you lose your mobile you loose all your contacts. But do you know that when you sync your smart phone with gmail then your contacts still remain with you? Yeah that's so true! When you login with your gmail onto another phone then you can find all the contacts. Similarly when you accidentally erase all the data on the mobile then backing up data might be of great use.

Passwords, passwords, PASSwords

Research often reveals that accounts whose passwords weren't changed for a long time are the ones likely to be hacked. Yes you read that right, we are living in a dangerous HACKERS world. So you might as well constantly change your passwords for all the accounts which include social media, email and the likes..

Selfies rule 2016

Yes i know you have loads of friends that just love throwing themselves at the limelight by taking endless selfies. This may seem silly but you can give them the limelight but putting contact pictures. When you do this then every time you call someone or they call you, you'll see their image which is of great use. Literally that is!

e-books anyone?

Instead of just killing time you can increase your knowledge or flaunt your imagination by reading books which are available online through Apps such as Kindle or google books. It is as easy as A-B-C.

Visit blogs

Blogs now form a part of the Internet's family. Do visit various blogs to learn new things and you could also learn how to do complicated things in a simplified manner. www.mzansidailytrends.tk will always be here for you. Spread the word and we will spread the love.

Mrs Right Guy

The local romantic comedy, ‘Mrs Right Guy” was a refreshing look at the daunting dating game, with characters that were both relateable, realistic and fabulously styled.

The film is funny, and has an internationally viable feel, with great shots, and a story line that doesn’t have any holes.

Though the beginning is a bit cliche, with the main character, Gugu, played by Dineo Moeketsi, waking up in a hotel, on an exotic island, abandoned by her husband.. the film ties everything together in very entertaining way, keeping you interested all the way through.

The leading men are also some great eye-candy.

Holding its own against blockbusters like ‘X Men – Apocalypse’, ‘Angry Birds’ and ‘Alice Through The Looking Glass’ local romcom starring Dineo Moeketsi ‘Mrs Right Guy’ secured fifth place on the industry Top Ten this past weekend just behind ‘Money Monster’.

‘Mrs Right Guy’ passed the R1mllion mark on last week Monday following its release on Friday 3 June. It opened 5% stronger than the recently released Paula Patton helmed ‘The Perfect Match’. ‘Mrs Right Guy’ doubled the gross takings of audience favourite ‘Fanie Fourie’s Lobola’ (2012) and performed 19% better than last year’s ‘Tell Me Sweet Something’.

Directed by Adze Ugah ‘Mrs Right Guy’ follows the challenges facing the contemporary single woman in her search for a mate and reflects the complications millennials face as they try to find true love.

“We are thrilled that audiences are embracing the film to the extent that we are adding sites this coming weekend.’ said producer Dumi Gumbi about the opening weekend results. ‘May this film burst open many more doors and continue to prove that there is a market for South African film.’ added producer Mokopi Shale.

Raising laughs as well as hope for those who have been wounded by love, the film follows Gugu as fate introduces her to two eligible young men – serial seducer Dumile (Thapelo Mokoena) and regular good guy Joe (Lehasa Moloi).

‘Mrs Right Guy’ was produced by Dumi Gumbi, Kethiwe Ngcobo, Mokopi Shale and Cati Weinek. ‘Mrs Right Guy’ was funded by the National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF), in association with Gauteng Film Commission, and The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and supported by the Kwa Zulu Natal Film Commission. The film is being distributed in South Africa by Indigenous Film Distribution.

School girls take lead in building Africa's first satellite

The future is 'technologically' bright for 150 South African schoolgirls who have been drafted in a project to design and build Africa’s first private satellite.

Yes you got that right - Africa's first private satellite.

The satellite is expected to be launched into space towards the end of 2016 as part of a program that's sponsored by The Meta Economic Development Organization (MEDO). This program is aimed at motivating more teenage girls in African countries to study and work in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics field, widely known by the acronym STEM.

Now isn't that what we all need in order to further empower the girl child?

Anyway, the lucky girls kicked off the project last Thursday and they have been tasked with designing the payload for the satellite. This of course after being trained by satellite engineers on building rovers or mini-robots.

MEDO's space program manager, Carla De Klerk, had this to say:

"MEDO has procured the first private satellite in Africa and we have decided to effectively give this to young women to design it and put it together. . . The satellite is going to have a polar orbit, meaning it is going to go over Africa and they want to focus particularly on Africa and the problems they will be facing in a ten-year time."

In the long run, the 'healthy' project will also involve girls from Namibia, Malawi, Kenya, Rwanda and Ghana.

A satellite has generally two major sections: the spacecraft bus and the system that provides its core functionality, known simply as the payload.

Research shows that the number of women working in STEM fields is low, more so in Africa where girls are more likely to be kept out of school than boys, because of poverty and early marriage.

About 80 percent of jobs will need STEM skills by the year 2020, but less than 10 percent of girls are currently interested or are pursuing university studies in STEM field.

Let the work commence young ladies! The thought of Africa's first private satellite is so WOOOOOOW!!

Springboks get Jo'burg buzzing

Johannesburgers just know how to light up their city during international rugby match days. Well, Saturday was no different as the city dwellers painted the streets green and gold before welcoming Ireland at the iconic Emirates Park fortress.

The Springboks were out not only to salvage lost pride following their Cape Town defeat, but also to prevent the Irish from becoming the first of the four home nations to win a series on South African soil.

Things started off badly for Alister Coetzee's troops as a Devin Toner try and 14 points from the boot of flyhalf Paddy Jackson saw the Boks going to the break 19-3 'shattered'.

Boooooos Booooos and even louder boooooos escorted the players down the tunnel.

I don't know if the boos worked as the Springboks mounted a dramatic second half comeback to win 32-26 with four smart tries that left everyone inside the stadium pretty chaffed.

The win was the first under new Springbok coach Allister Coetzee and maintained his nation's hopes of safeguarding an enviable record of not having lost a Test series at home in the past 19 years.

All eyes will be in Port Elizabeth next Saturday for the series decider. If the Boks play like they did in the last 10-15 minutes on Saturday, then PE rugby fans are in for a classic.

The Soil's Buhle on come back path

Phew! Some great news to kick off the entertainment week is that Buhle Mda (A member of The Soil) will soon be making a much awaited return.

Buhle, who is currently on a brief sabbatical, is expected to be back behind the mic this August.

The beautifully voiced Buhle took it upon herself to answer her ancestral calling earlier this year and according to the Sunday Sun, there are strong indications that she will make a highly anticipated return before the end of the year.

Co-owner of Native Rhythm, Velile Sithole, told the Sunday Sun that: “There’s been speculation that the group is breaking up. But this couldn’t be further from the truth – as we await the return of the group’s original female member, Buhle Mda.”

Throughout Buhle’s absence, female vocalist, Theo Matshoba made her strides felt by filling in her shoes. Sithole does not believe this will complicate matters when Mda makes her return though.

“Theo is part of The Soil’s development project for all the artists to get a chance to perform and gain experience as well as recognition in the music industry,” explained Sithole.

Surely Theo has made a name for herself within the challenging music entertainment scene.

#WorldWiFiDay: AlwaysOn celebrates with free WiFi

On June 20, in celebration of World WiFi Day, AlwaysOn will be connecting the people of South Africa on a grand scale. The goal: complimentary Internet access to anyone who is in an AlwaysOn Super WiFi Hotspot and registers on our network, until midnight June 21.

Established by the Wireless Broadband Alliance – an organisation campaigning for better access to technology and Internet connectivity for all – World WiFi Day is a one-of-a-kind, global initiative that recognises the pivotal role WiFi is playing in cities and communities around the world, by driving innovative and exciting projects to “connect the unconnected”.

Commenting on World WiFi Day, Hayden Lamberti, MD for AlwaysOn, said: “South Africa’s prolific adoption of WiFi comes down to the huge growth in the use of WiFi-enabled devices and the search for credible, alternative mechanisms to connect to the Internet. Most people in South Africa do not have a broadband connection at home, but are well aware of the advantages and benefits of such a service. We want to grant them, and quite frankly anyone else who’s interested, the opportunity to experience seamless, free Internet for World WiFi Day.”

That drive for Internet access has resulted in AlwaysOn’s network seeing an average of 4 million connections per month, and data consumption is more than doubling year on year. That’s in part thanks to the 30 minutes to 1 hour of complimentary public WiFi data AlwaysOn provides for all users, no strings attached.

Interestingly, a large portion of that free data is used for job searching and general research purposes, making it a vital service given the struggle so many South Africans are having finding employment. “Imagine what those searching for jobs could do with a day of unlimited access to our network”, said Hayden. “We’re about to find out.”

For the best possible public Hotspot WiFi experience, we urge you to find our nearest AlwaysOn Super WiFi Hotspots, on the Hotspot Finder. AlwaysOn SuperWiFi locations are incredibly fast – possibly the fastest available public WiFi in South Africa.

If you’re concerned about the safety of your personal information, we’re happy to report that we’re 100% ECA (Electronic Communications Act) and POPI (South Africa’s Protection of Personal Information Act) compliant. That means that we only ask for information that is absolutely necessary and required by law, for the protection of ourselves as well as you. Any information we do gather is secure and protected.

Need help? Here are a few simple steps you need to follow to connect to AlwaysOn.

Go to alwayson.co.za
Use the HOTSPOT FINDER to find your nearest SUPERWIFI LOCATION.
When you are in an AlwaysOn Super WiFi Hotspot, switch on your device’s WiFi.
SEARCH for AlwaysOn amongst the available WiFi networks on the list.
Click on AlwaysOn and your smart device will CONNECT.
Open your browser and you will be directed to the AlwaysOn Dashboard or Client Portal when you search.
Fill in your details to log in and register, and away you go!
We love – nay, adore – the Internet, it’s the reason we’re in this business, so we know how frustrating it can be to have something go wrong. We’re doing our best to prepare, but sometimes things go wrong anyway. If you’re struggling to connect, please contact our support desk on 0861 468 7768. They will be on standby to assist with glitches on the day.

Now it’s up to you to share the news! Hashtag: #FreeData4All    #WorldWiFiDay

Remember T’s & C’s apply, with our fair usage policy1!

Happy browsing with compliments from AlwaysOn.

#TransAfrica radio withstands test of time

TransAfrica radio recently held an event in which it celebrated its continued success on the African sphere. The 15 year old radio station has prided itself in belting out 100% African music.

Busi Ntuli narrated about how the radio station began 15 years ago when she and her business partner realised the inadequate exposure of African music and content across Africa. Ntuli said it was this realisation which led to the birth of TransAfrica Radio.

Broadcasting on both satellite and internet streaming, the radio station is highly dedicated to establishing and highlighting African music.

TransAfrica radio boasts of full spectrum programming which not only promote African music, but also vast cultures, sporting icons etc sprouted across the continent.

Ntuli describes her mission to promote African artists as a movement and said that we all need a mindset shift. She reiterated that although there is nothing wrong with supporting western musicians, it is a travesty to ignore the talents of the artists in our own motherland.

TransAfrica Radio is available on the DSTV audio bouquet on channel 872 and on all three satellites across Africa. Ntuli is also determined to promote African music beyond the borders of Africa, with listeners in parts of Europe and Asia. The radio station can also be accessed on tunein.com and RadioBox.com.

TransAfrica radio has surely taken the front pedal in promoting African cultures through music.

Cristiano Ronaldo bags the money

Cristiano Ronaldo has become the top earning athlete in the world after raking in a cool £61million in the last year alone.

The superstar footballer usurped long-term leader Floyd Mayweather Jnr into first place. The retired boxer, who fought just once in the last 12 months, earned £30million.

Ronaldo’s monster pay-packet was the result of his eye-watering £38.5million-a-year salary with Spanish giants Real Madrid and endorsement deals with the likes of Nike, watchmaker Tag Heuer and nutrition supplements group Herbalife – themselves worth £22million.

His footballing rival Lionel Messi – who the 31-year-old beat to be crowned the World Player of the Year in January – was second on the list, taking home £56million in 2015/16.

It is the first time since 2001 that an athlete other than Mayweather Jnr or golfer Tiger Woods topped the earning league.

Former world number one Woods has not won a single tournament since 2013 and missed most of the last year recovering from surgery on his back.

Splendid #WhatsApp features

WhatsApp, the app Facebook bought for $19 billion (£12 billion), is used by more than 900 million people around the world and has become one of the best ways to connect with people in different countries or have group conversations. Unlike with text messaging, WhatsApp uses a data connection, which means sending a message is essentially free, especially for those with unlimited data plans.

While the app is reasonably simple, there are features many users haven’t yet discovered. Here are the “hidden” features in WhatsApp that everyone should know about and use.

1. Hide your “Last Seen” time.

Hiding your ”Last Seen” time is a useful feature if you don’t want people to know when you last checked in to WhatsApp.

To switch it off, head to Settings > Account > Privacy > Last Seen. From here, you can select who gets to view your “Last Seen” time.

The feature does come with a trade-off: You won’t be able to see anyone else’s ”Last Seen” time either.

2. Create custom group-chat notifications.

An alternative to muting group chat is having different notifications for each one, allowing you to check your phone only for the important ones.

As with the muting feature, head to the chat, click the name and go to ”Custom Notifications,”’ where a different sound can be selected.

3. Stop photos from being saved to the camera roll.

Phone storage space is a precious thing, and WhatsApp can consume a lot of it.

To avoid this, head to Apple Settings > Privacy > Photos and then un-select WhatsApp from the list, banning the app from saving new pictures to the camera roll. Pictures do still download, however, so you won’t be missing out.

4. See how many messages you and your friends have sent to each other.

To find out whom you communicate with most on WhatsApp, go to Settings > Account > Network Usage.

A number appears next to each contact that represents the total number of messages sent back and forth. Selecting a person reveals more information, including how many messages have been sent by whom.

5. See when someone has read your message.

Checking when someone read your message is useful for all kinds of reasons, especially in a group-chat setting.

To check, select the message and drag it left, revealing the time it was delivered and the time it was read. In a group chat, a list of whom the message has been delivered to and who has read it shows instead.

Note: If you uncheck Read Receipts to prevent people from seeing when you have read their messages, you also won’t be able to see when other people have read your messages (explained next).

6. Change your WhatsApp number if you switch phone numbers.

Setting up WhatsApp and then changing phones can be a pain. The service is not linked to your actual phone number, just the first number you enter and verify. This ”number” will then follow you onto your next phone, creating confusion for everyone.

If you get a new number, you can change your WhatsApp number quite easily by going to Settings > Account > Change Number and following the steps from there.

7. You can switch off Read Receipts — just like iMessage.

Reading someone’s messages without replying is, in 2015, considered the height of bad digital etiquette. Luckily, WhatsApp can help.

By going to Settings > Account > Privacy and switching off Read Receipts, your friends will never know that you are ignoring them.

8. You can access WhatsApp on the web.

WhatsApp Web, accessed via web.whatsapp.com, brings the phone experience to your computer and is available in all major browsers.

To access it, go to the website and scan the QR code with the WhatsApp app and you will be logged in. From here you can start, continue, and end conversations with all the usual features that are in the app.

9. Mute group chats.

Group-chat notifications especially in a big group can become annoying, particularly if you aren’t involved in the conversation. While muting group chat may seem drastic, sometimes these things have to be done.

Go to the group chat in question, click on its name and select ”Mute,” where you will be presented with three options: eight hours, a week, and a year.

Use minced meat in different ways

By Esther Malan

Cut down on the stress of preparing meals for supper by making and freezing food.

Here is how you can make and use mince in different ways:

Freezing tips: Prepare a large pot of a simple curried mince or Bolognese recipe and double or triple it. Let the rest cool, divide it into portions and freeze it. Cooked mince can be frozen for two to three months.

Defrost and use it for:

1 Bobotie – Spoon the mince mixture into an oven dish, make a simple egg custard and pour it over the mince, add a few bay leaves and bake until heated through and set.

2 Vetkoek with curried mince – heat the mince in a saucepan, add a cup of peas, heat and fill the Vetkoek with the mixture.

3 Curried shepherd’s pie – Mix a few grated carrots with the mince, spoon into an oven dish, cover with mashed potato or mashed vegetables (a mixture of mashed potatoes and pumpkin or carrots) and bake in the oven until heated through.

Bolognese:

Defrost and use for:

1 Lasagna – make a simple white sauce; arrange layers of lasagna sheets, mince and white sauce in an oven dish, ending with white sauce and cheese. Bake in the oven until done.

2 Bolognese-pizza – spread the mince over a prepared pizza base, arrange a few halved cherry tomatoes on the mince, sprinkle with cheese and bake in the oven until done. Sprinkle with fresh basil and slice.

3 Tomato soup – heat the mince, a can of chopped tomatoes and 1 litre of beef extract in a pot, season with sugar, salt and freshly ground pepper and bring to the boil. Serve with toast.

Fulu Mugovhani bags #AMAA Award

Just last week I was "revelling" about how South African talent is being recognised on the continent. Mzansi's soapie stars have carved a niche for themselves as household names, thanks to DStv.

Anyway, Scandal actress Fulu Mugovanhi did heed my call to bring home the Award for BEST ACTRESS at the AMAA 2016 for her role in Ayanda.

Strato IT Group launches mobile business application

IT solutions expert, Strato IT Group has launched its first mobile business application, StratoPOD. Aimed at logistics companies and their customers, StratoPOD is one of the first mobile business applications guaranteed to offer an immediate ROI with real-time visibility of delivery operations and digital proof of delivery.

Cassie Lessing, MD, Strato IT Group, says that the company is very excited about the mobile business application and the impact it will have within the logistics sector: “Unlike traditional delivery systems, StratoPOD, because of its innovative digital platform, removes risks, reduces loss and improves delivery time and accuracy via its custom-designed app.”

StratoPOD provides a single, connected system that simplifies and digitises delivery. The solution has been developed using Sybase technology from SAP and provides the highest level of data security. The application is portable over multiple mobile devices and is architected to operate independently or to be integrated with most recognised business technologies. It features a cloud-based data repository that facilitates real-time visibility of goods in transit across all suppliers, customers and logistics operators in the supply chain.

Lessing says that StratoPOD easily transforms any paper-based delivery system to a digitised environment and has already been successfully implemented within one of South Africa’s largest automotive companies: “For this customer we have configured the app to digitise their parts delivery operations and the benefits have been immediate. The app can be configured for any logistics environment and solutions are already in place for packaged materials, bulk materials (stone, coal, fuel and sand) and palletised materials.”

StratoPOD essentially automates the entire documentation process according to Lessing and has laid the foundation for additional app development by the Strato IT Group.

Top 10 qualities employers look for #MotivationMonday

Most job seekers wish they could unlock the secret formula to winning the hearts and minds of employers. What, they wonder, is that unique combination of skills and values that make employers salivate with excitement? Every employer is looking for a specific set of skills from job-seekers that match the skills necessary to perform a particular job.

Here are the skills and qualities that will help you win your dream job below…

1. Communication Skills

The ability to communicate clearly and effectively in many mediums: by email, verbally, with lists and phone messages, on the phone, and with body language. Communication also includes listening skills and the ability to follow directions and provide feedback.

2. Honesty

Employers want accurate and timely information regarding their business and their employees. Made a mistake? Don’t cover it up, admit it, and learn not to do it again.

3. Technical Competency

Most positions require certain skills that are advertised on the Job Posting. If you are hired to perform certain tasks then you should have the skills. Improving your skills along the way is also expected.

4. Work Ethic

Be at work on time, do what you were hired to do, meet targets and deadlines and work to the best of your ability. What more could an employer ask?

5. Flexibility

Employers and their employees need to react quickly to changing business conditions. Employers need employees who can change gears and adapt as required.

6. Determination and Persistence

Managers will give employees challenging goals but generally they are achievable. The key is to be able to work hard and keep moving forward when you encounter obstacles.

7. Ability to Work in Harmony with Co-Workers

Employers and managers like to have people working with them and for them who can get along with their colleagues and who can work with others effectively in different circumstances.

8. Eager and Willing to Add to Their Knowledge Base and Skills

As businesses change, there is often a need to find out new information, expand knowledge and explore new ways of doing things. People with an interest in learning, and a willingness to pass it on to others, become invaluable.

9. Problem-Solving Skills

Companies are looking for people who are motivated to take on challenges with minimal direction. Employees should see when something needs to be done and react accordingly.

10. Loyalty

Employers want and need to be able to trust their employees to work professionally to meet the employer’s best interests. Employers do not want to hire people who require close scrutiny or who cannot be trusted to represent the company in public.
