Telkom is on a roll!
Despite competing in a ruthless, global environment, Telkom's financial results raved up remarkable results from its mobile unit.
The unit managed to reduce strong losses from R2.2 billion three years ago to just R43 million in the year ending March 2016.
Chief executive Sipho Maseko described the mobile unit as “a star performer” hinting that the company had completed its turnaround strategy and the business was now ready for further growth.
Telkom recorded operating revenue of R37.3 billion, an increase of 13.9 percent from R32.8 billion, boosted by the acquisition of Business Connexion (BCX) and a solid performance in data.
During the year under review, Telkom managed to set up an open access network, Openserve, which offered same priced services to all, including it’s competitors.
The strong financial results demonstrate the viability of open access networks and their contribution to company sustainability.
Telecommunications Minister Siyabonga Cwele heaped praises on Telekom stating that it is an important blueprint for other State-Owned Enterprises, adding this was proof that government entities were able to function.
