Jayshree Parasuramen and Kajal Bagwandeen will lead a star-studded cast, when Ashwin Singh’s Spice ‘n Stuff runs at the Playhouse in Durban, starting next Wednesday.
The show is a revival of the 2006 show, which was last staged during a national tour in 2010/11. The play is a tribute to the Durban community, and a celebration of the human spirit.
Also starring in this play are talented actors Yateen Dayaram, Maeshni Naicker, Warrick Frank, Vedarsha Singh, Bongani Mbatha, and Singh himself.
The show will run for four nights this season.
Singh said: “It depicts a people who overcome institutionalised racism and out of their culturally designated precinct, build a magical place, inviting the whole world to sample it. It also laments the recent deterioration of Grey Street (now called Yusuf Dadoo Street) due to circumstances beyond the control of the Indian and Black vendors and hawkers who still work there.”
“Most importantly, it exposes the stories behind the stories of the people who populate this Durban landmark,” added Singh.
