Each day I wonder how almost everyone (conscious about their appearance of course) can claim to be so busy, short on cash but still look so put together?
Everyday I walk around the beautiful streets of Joburg and see men and women oozing personal style without falling into the “t-shirt and jeans” stereotype that seems to be the epitome of college student style.
Yes, people complain about the costly look that most of us exhume but like I always say, you have no reason to look untidy. Most South Africans don’t earn much money to buy a new wardrobe but somehow still pull it together.
If you generally take a peek at people at parties, barbeques and bars on weekends, or just people walking around town, you will see how everyone would be impressively dressed.
I think it is only wise to give ourselves some credit for looking so put together, given the rigid economic circumstances. Nonetheless I am awed at how great people look even when completely bundled in cheap clothing.
The motivation to look good in the worst conditions illustrates how people are dying to express their own unique style, something that i have been preaching for the past three years now. I recently engaged in a debate with someone where she said it was impossible to be well put together if you were either a domestic worker or a taxi driver.
I was obviously against that idea. Being neat and stylish is all about how you view yourself and and how you want people to perceive you.
With all due respect, taxi drivers have been labeled the dirtiest individuals working in an industry that deals with the public on a daily basis. Partly that is true as I guess once you are in that field you cease to care about your appearance.
I have come across a few smart ones and they do whack a punch on street fashion.
Being well kept and put together is all about the way you want people to think of you. There are places that offer great deals and prices for clothes, basing this argument on the fact that there are some people that don’t earn much.
Typical places include Chinese shops; I am sure most of us do our shopping there as well.
I can definitely relate to the dilemma of wanting to look trendy while not spending too much money. I am constantly mixing up my wardrobe to keep my style fresh and new each day and I hope to bring some of my own tips and ideas in order to help you do the same.
