Changing young lives inspires maths teacher

An Eastern Cape teacher honoured for excellence in teaching mathematics at the National Teaching Awards run-up event, says knowing she is able to change the lives of young children inspires her to succeed.

The event was held at East London's Osner Hotel by the department of education last week.

Pamella Mbhongisa, who teaches at SW Mbanga Junior Secondary school in Butterworth, said it was fulfilling to see the department appreciating the work of dedicated teachers.

Mbhongisa teaches pupils from grades 7 to 9.

She said her teaching career began at the age of 22 and at 52 she still looked forward to going into the classroom and teaching her subject.

She said the aim of teachers was to help children grow at school and this was why she had given her all.

Mbhongisa said: "I did not expect to get that award, but when I did I was so excited. I didn't know my passion would get me that far."

She said she was driven every day by her love of mathematics.

"I am passionate about teaching and passionate about the subject itself.

"My intention is to grow my learners. I want to see them majoring in mathematics even when they get to varsity.

"I want to see doctors and seasoned mathematicians coming from rural areas."

She said she wanted to end the negative perception many pupils had of the subject.

"I always tell my learners that anything is achievable, including the subject itself.

"I have discovered that it is the easiest subject because what you know in foundation phase can never change even when you get to grade 12.

"I want them to be in love with the subject," she said.

Mbhongisa said witnessing children she had taught succeed was one of the most amazing feelings.
"I have past learners who come to me and appreciate the role I played. Witnessing the growth right in front of me is something I take pride in.
"Life is really unpredictable — one minute they are young and the next they are graduating in their fields of choice. As a teacher you become so proud to see the transition," Mbhongisa said.
