Johannesburg residents and visitors will have a treat on New Year's Eve in the form of a free dance and music concert featuring local and international artists.
The City of Joburg will be hosting this annual event at Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown on Saturday to see in the new year. There will be DJs, live bands and dance groups, ranging from jazz to afropop, hip hop, reggae, kwaito and house, reflecting the cosmopolitan mix which makes Joburg exciting, said city spokesperson Nthatisi Modingoane.
Expect soulful performances from Donald, Ishmael, Kelly Khumalo and Cici, hip hop hits from headliners Khuli Chana, Kid X and DJ Speedsta, house jams by legendary Dbn Nyts, DJ Clock and DJ Sbu, and Venda and Shangaan-influenced house beats by rising star King Monada. The concert will also feature kwaito artists Busiswa, Chomee, Arthur and Brickz.
The rest of the continent will be represented and celebrated, with a special music and dance spectacular headed by music maestro Steve Dyer.
Also performing will be Mzansi Africa, featuring singers and performers Selmor Mtukudzi with her sensual dance moves and Xixel Langa, inspired by Afro-Latino sounds from Mozambique, plus a range of Zimbabwean and South African musicians and dancers.
There will also be a fireworks display, managed by professional pyrotechnic personnel.
Modingoane said the city was urging concertgoers to behave responsibly. Bottled beverages, alcohol, fireworks and weapons will not be allowed into the venue.
The city gave the assurance there would be a strong presence of law enforcement agencies and emergency services to look after partygoers.
The concert starts at 4pm and will end at 5am on New Year's Day.
