Khanyisa Sigebetshu's life took a positive turn three years ago when she lost her job and decided to start her own business.

Now, at the age of 30, she is the proud owner of Kay's Baking Haven, a small bakery located in the rural town of Lusikisiki.

Specializing in treats and special occasion cakes, Sigebetshu has built a reputation for delivering high-quality products that not only look good but taste even better.

With a team of four employees, Sigebetshu and her staff work tirelessly to create a variety of baked goods, including cakes, scones, muffins, cupcakes, biscuits, popsicles, pies, and doughnuts.

Some items are available for order, while others are readily available for those in need of a quick grab-and-go treat.

Sigebetshu prides herself on meeting her clients' expectations and ensuring that every bite is flavorful and satisfying.

Before embarking on her baking journey, Sigebetshu worked for MSC Cruises, a cruise ship company.

It was during her time there that she discovered her passion for baking, despite initially working as a mess attendant.

Over the course of three contracts, she gained valuable experience in the food industry and honed her customer service skills.

In May 2020, amidst the peak of the pandemic, Sigebetshu took the leap and launched her business. Her first orders came in September of the same year, with three customers from Port St Johns.

To further enhance her skills and knowledge in the food industry, she enrolled in classes at Injabulo Foodworks in Durban in February 2021.

This allowed her to refine her baking techniques and expand her repertoire to include catering, cake making, cooking, and the creation of platters.

Social media platforms, such as Facebook, TikTok, and Instagram, have played a significant role in growing Sigebetshu's business and attracting clients.

Operating under the account name Kay's Baking Haven, she has managed to reach customers not only in Lusikisiki but also in Port St Johns and Mthatha.

Her popular cakes start at a retail price of R550, with an additional charge for delivery to other towns.

Khanyisa Sigebetshu's journey from job loss to successful small business owner is a testament to her determination and skill.

Through her passion for baking and dedication to customer satisfaction, she has built a thriving bakery that continues to bring joy to her clients on their special occasions.
