People are most likely to donate money to cancer and animal charities, while education and disaster relief causes receive the least amount of support.
The elderly (13%) and the homeless (12%) are also near the bottom of the pile when it comes to donations, says research by Virgin Money Giving.
But in general the public are getting more generous, with over half (52%) now saying they would prefer a donation in their name rather than a birthday or Christmas present.
Cancer Research topped the list of good causes with 45% happy to hand over money, while education was left trailing with just 4% prepared to pay out.
The poll of 2,000 adults was conducted to mark the 10th anniversary of Virgin Money Giving, the biggest not-for-profit charity platform in the UK.
The project has helped raise more than £800million since 2009.
Virgin founder Sir Richard Branson said: "I've always believed business should be a force for good.
"Virgin Money Giving is a great example of that."
