eKasi+ To Broadcast Naledi Theatre Awards

eKasi+ (channel 105 on OpenView HD) will broadcast the 11th annual Naledi Theatre Awards which took place on Saturday, 14 April at Gold Reef City’s Lyric Theatre.

The Awards, which recognise and honour excellence in professional theatre, is the biggest and most highly anticipated theatre award event of the year. It showcases the best of what South Africa has to offer in music, dance and song.

Some of South Africa’s best-known performers graced the stage.  Guests were treated to, performances from some of the theatre productions that were staged during the year such as Marikana – The Musical, The Sound of Music, Peter Pan and many more. Newcomer, Michael Riff Thema, who was  nominated for a Naledi in the “Best Performance in a Musical: Male” category,  performed a number from Peter Pan, giving the audience a taste of his vocal capabilities. The indomitable PJ Powers soared with a song from her award-nominated one-woman show, Firefly.

There were hot items from ShooWop Shop. The Vuyani Dance Company enthralled the audience with a new item direct from their European tour. World-renowned performers Keith Smith, Timothy Moloi and Janelle Visagie took to the stage with breath-taking performances. Janelle Visagie was nominated for her performance as the Mother Superior in “The Sound of Music”. Joburg Ballet  performed a segment from Swan Lake.

The MC’s were  popular TV presenter, poet and actress Lebo Mashile and the famous Chester Missing, a puppet whose curt comments on matters political have sent the Nation into stitches. Celebrity presenters included Kgomotso Christopher, Jack Devnarain, Aubrey Poo, Sylvaine Strike, Zuraida Jardine as well as Dali and Rachel Tambo.

Twenty-five awards were handed out on the night, each carrying a trophy made of crystal and a cash cheque. One of the highlights was the Lifetime achievement award, presented to an individual who has made an indelible contribution to the arts. A special award was presented to the WarHorse production as well as to its South African producers, Pieter Toerien and RMB.
