Pearl Thusi gets emotional

Pearl Thusi recently celebrated her 36th birthday in a poignant and emotional way, as she wished for the presence of her late parents on her special day. The "Queen Sono" actress lost her mother over 19 years ago and her father passed away in 2020.

In a heartfelt Instagram post, Thusi shared her feelings of longing and nostalgia for her parents, expressing how much she missed them on her birthday. She revealed, "I've been feeling a lot of big feelings lately… grateful that my kids are already at school and don't have to see me like this. But I'm so happy to be feeling. And maybe crying on your birthday is okay – it's all the love I still have for my parents yearning to be felt by them."

Despite the overwhelming emotions she experienced, Thusi reflected on the strength and resilience she has gained from her parents. She expressed, "I'm feeling everything… joy, sadness, excitement, love, hope, fears. What I'd do to get a call from them. I miss my dad's voice in a heartbreaking and wrenching way. But with all the despair I may often feel at the losses I've had to take through the years, I'm still standing, tall and proud, so just in case they see everything – they didn't die in vain."

As she navigated through the bittersweet memories of her past birthdays, Thusi found solace in the love and support she received from her parents. She hoped that her special day could serve as a reminder of the powerful and enduring love she inherited from them. Reflecting on her journey as a mother, she mused, "Giving birth and raising a child is tough – hope I'm making it worth it. My mom would be proud and my dad pretended he wasn't phased until I heard the stories he was telling people when I wasn't there. 'Yimi uBaba kaPearl Thusi' 😂."

In celebrating her birthday, Pearl Thusi paid tribute to her late parents with a mix of tears, laughter, and gratitude, honoring the legacy of love they left behind.

Taxi driver becomes a doctor and immediately gets a job #BestMornings

Lindani Mzize, a 26-year-old from Mbizana, has defied the odds by graduating as a medical doctor from Walter Sisulu University (WSU). His path to success was paved with immense challenges, including witnessing his mother's murder at the young age of 14 and battling post-traumatic stress disorder and financial hardship.

Mzize's journey to becoming a doctor was not easy. After matriculating in 2016, he initially enrolled in a Bachelor of Science degree at the University of KwaZulu-Natal but later dropped out. To support himself, he began driving a taxi. However, his dream of becoming a healthcare professional remained strong.

"Graduating has left me speechless," Mzize shared. "It still feels like a dream because the road was not easy." He credits his late mother as his inspiration, stating, "Everything that I did was for my late mom who passed away in 2012."

Despite the challenges, Mzize persevered. He applied to study medicine at WSU and continued driving a taxi during holidays to maintain financial independence. "I knew it would be difficult at the beginning of every year because the funding takes time to reflect in our accounts," he explained.  "Thinking ahead, I made a point in the holidays of working hard and saving so I'd have money to sustain me for the first three months while waiting for funding."

Mzize's story is a testament to the power of resilience and determination. He hopes his journey will inspire others facing adversity to pursue their dreams. He is now set to begin his internship at General Justice Gizenza Mpanza Regional Hospital in KwaZulu-Natal, marking the beginning of a new chapter in his life.

#DrinksReview: Amarula gin is balanced and refreshing

Amarula Gin is an exciting new addition to the world of spirits, crafted from the fruit of the marula tree. This distinctive gin is made using the white pulp of the marula fruit, which is hand-picked and carefully processed to preserve its fresh, fruity flavors.

The production process involves fermenting and distilling the marula pulp to form the spirit of marula, followed by blending with botanicals. Sweet and subtle notes of juniper berries and orange blossom harmonize perfectly with the exotic marula fruit, resulting in a balanced and refreshing gin.

Amarula Gin's African roots give it a unique character that can be appreciated by gin enthusiasts worldwide, whether enjoyed neat or with tonic. The marula fruit, known for its rich flavor, grows on tall, wild marula trees found across sub-Saharan Africa.

By mid-February, the marula fruit ripens, attracting the attention of wildlife, especially elephants who seek out the fruit as a favorite snack.

The tasting notes of Amarula Gin are a delightful journey through floral spices and freshness on the nose, followed by juniper berry, orange blossom, and marula fruit on the palate. The gin finishes with a fresh, balanced touch that leaves a lasting impression.

Inspirational lady creates opportunities for South African freelancers to work remotely for overseas companies

Di Luden, a Gqeberha resident with a heart firmly rooted in the Eastern Cape, has taken her international experience and channeled it into creating opportunities for South Africans to work remotely for overseas companies.  After a successful career on super-yachts, Luden co-founded Ubuntu Freelancers, a platform connecting South African talent with global clients.

Luden's journey began with a desire for a more settled lifestyle after years of globetrotting as a purser on luxury yachts.  "I never imagined moving back to the Eastern Cape," she admitted, "but life has a funny way of choosing a path for you." The COVID-19 pandemic provided the catalyst for change, prompting Luden to explore remote work options.

Inspired by a friend who was successfully working remotely for US clients, Luden secured her own international client and relished the flexibility and international exposure it offered.  "I absolutely loved that I was still getting an international taste while living in Gqeberha," she shared.

The seed for Ubuntu Freelancers was planted during a casual conversation with her cousin.  Luden's belief in the potential of South African talent, combined with the increasing demand for remote work, led them to explore the idea further.  "We are naturally hardworking, diligent people," she remarked, confident in the abilities of her fellow South Africans.

In November 2021, Ubuntu Freelancers was born, aiming to bridge the gap between South African freelancers and international clients seeking skilled professionals.  Luden's venture exemplifies the spirit of Ubuntu, harnessing the power of community and collaboration to create opportunities that transcend borders.

From humble beginnings to household name: Conza's Biscuits rises to success

Conza's Biscuits, a Soweto-based family business, has blossomed from a mother's determination to provide for her daughters into a thriving enterprise on the cusp of becoming a household name.  Founded in 2004 by Constance Chauke, the journey began as a means of survival when her daughter, Rhandzu, was unable to pursue higher education due to financial constraints.

Armed with her baking skills and a mere R150, Constance started small, selling biscuits to neighbors and local caterers.  Her dedication led her to become a familiar face outside Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, where her delicious treats sold out daily.  Through her hard work, Rhandzu was able to obtain a diploma in media production.

In 2015, Rhandzu joined her mother's business full-time, recognizing its potential for growth.  Her sister, Rhulani, followed suit in 2019, bringing her corporate experience to the table.  Together, they formalized the business and propelled it forward.

Today, Conza's Biscuits supplies a variety of biscuits to over 30 retail outlets and independent resellers across Gauteng.  Their success has earned them recognition, including the prestigious 702 MTN Small Business Award in 2024.

While Constance has taken a step back, relocating to Limpopo, her wisdom and guidance remain integral to the business.  Her daughters, inspired by her entrepreneurial spirit, are determined to make Conza's Biscuits a global brand.  As Rhulani proudly states, "Her wisdom is what drives the business behind the scenes."

For more information on Conza's Biscuits, visit www.conzasbiscuits.co.za or email info@conzasbiscuits.co.za or call 010-980-5122.

Skincare ingredients to amp up your skincare this winter #GirlTalkZA

The search for the perfect skincare regime often leads us to explore a plethora of ingredients promising radiant, healthy skin. This winter, as the chill sets in and our skin calls for extra care, the spotlight is on a handful of powerhouse elements that are not only trending but are also backed by science for their rejuvenating effects.
"The key to surviving winter skin — redness, dryness, flakiness, irritation, itching, overall sensitivity — is to incorporate ingredients to help nourish, hydrate and protect the skin," explains marketing manager for Vitaderm Ruan Winter. Among the most sought-after are Vitamin E, Vitamin A, Ceramides, Hyaluronic Acid, and Vitamin C — each offering unique benefits to combat the harsh effects of the season.
Vitamin E: The protective shield – Embraced for its potent antioxidant properties, Vitamin E emerges as a winter skincare hero. Its ability to neutralise free radical damage helps shield our skin from factors such as pollution, sun damage and certain foods we consume. Plus, it assists in protecting our skin from environmental aggressors like harsh winds and indoor heating which can strip away moisture and lead to dullness. It aids in strengthening the skin barrier, reducing water loss, and promoting a supple, nourished complexion—perfect for combating the dryness that often accompanies winter.
Vitamin A (Retinol): The age-defying elixir – For more youthful, glowing skin, Vitamin A, especially in the form of retinol, remains an unbeatable ally. Renowned for its cell turnover prowess, retinol helps to diminish the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and uneven skin tone. In winter, when our skin's renewal process can slow down due to the colder, drier air, incorporating Vitamin A into our routines can revitalise and rejuvenate.
Ceramides: The moisture lockers – In the battle against winter dryness, ceramides come out on top as the ultimate moisture saviours. These lipid molecules are naturally found in the skin, forming a protective layer to prevent moisture loss. When temperatures drop, and our skin's barrier weakens, ceramides step in to replenish and restore, leaving the skin soft, smooth, and hydrated.
Hyaluronic Acid: The hydration magnet – Hyaluronic Acid, or HA, has long been celebrated for its exceptional ability to attract and retain moisture. In the winter months, when dry indoor heat can leave our skin parched, HA becomes a coveted ingredient. By drawing in moisture from the environment and deeper layers of the skin, it plumps up fine lines and restores a healthy, dewy complexion.
Vitamin C: The brightening booster – The brightening powerhouse, Vitamin C not only helps to fend off environmental stressors but also works wonders in combating dullness and uneven skin tone. As the colder months can leave our complexion looking lacklustre, Vitamin C swoops in to restore radiance and luminosity.

#Phone Review: vivo V30 5G is the ultimate smartphone for South Africans. @vivomobile_sa

vivo has recently introduced its latest flagship smartphone, the V30 5G, to the South African market, and we had the privilege of reviewing this impressive device.

Upon unboxing, it became immediately apparent that the V30 5G is positioned to rival top contenders from industry giants like Samsung and Apple, boasting an exceptional triple-sensor camera system and a world-class display.

The standout feature of the V30 5G is its remarkable camera system, enhanced by the Aura Light Portrait module located beneath the main camera array. This module revolutionizes portrait photography by delivering significantly more light than conventional smartphone flashes, resulting in perfectly lit photos with exquisite detail and accurate colors.

The Aura Light Portrait module offers a staggering 19-times larger light-emitting area and 50-times softer lighting compared to traditional smartphone flashes, making it a game-changer in smartphone photography.

During our testing, we found the V30 5G's photos to be outstanding, particularly in low-light conditions where other smartphones often struggle. The dedicated Smart Colour Temperature Adjustment technology further enhanced the accuracy of colors, ensuring clear distinctions between subjects and backgrounds.

Beyond its impressive camera capabilities, the V30 5G shines with its Ultra Clear Sunlight display, boasting a generous 6.78-inch screen with a 1.5K resolution. Features like a 120Hz refresh rate, 2,800-nit peak local brightness, and a P3 Colour Gamut that supports over one billion unique colors contribute to an unparalleled viewing experience.

Overall, the vivo V30 5G excels in both camera performance and display quality, solidifying its position as a formidable contender in the high-end smartphone market.

#Competition - Stand a chance to #win your share R72,000 when you register for Sebenza's free WiFi

Running out of mobile data can be extremely frustrating, but this is a reality many South Africans face on a daily basis.

Fortunately for taxi and bus commuters across SA, a platform offering free on-board Wi-Fi is readily available — and is rewarding users for signing up!

Sebenza is an innovative, free-to-use platform offering you entertaining and educational content in more than 7,500 taxis and buses nationwide. And with the newly launched Khomba. Khonnecta. Sebenza campaign, they are giving away amazing cash prizes to the value of R72,000 to newly registered users during April, May and June 2024.

The campaign name takes inspiration from the Zulu slang term for hailing a taxi — Khomba — and is a playful nod to the unique use of hand signals when doing so.

Khonnecta refers to the ease of connecting to Wi-Fi inside a bus or taxi and Sebenza means "work together" to get connected.

Durbanite scores dream trip to watch #Liverpool and meets football icon Michael Owen for drinks

For Leshern Naidoo, a 32-year-old travel industry worker from Isipingo Beach, Durban, a lifelong dream recently became reality.

As a passionate Liverpool FC supporter since childhood, Naidoo won a competition hosted by Sunbet that sent him on an unforgettable journey to England, culminating in a meeting with his football idol, Michael Owen.

The competition, aligned with Owen's weekly Premier League predictions, offered a five-night trip to England as the grand prize. Naidoo, along with 24 other Sun International winners and guests, embarked on a whirlwind adventure that included attending the Manchester United vs Liverpool match at Old Trafford, a tour of the iconic Anfield stadium, and a day spent at Owen's equestrian estate.

"I was shocked when I got the call to say I'd won," Naidoo exclaimed. "It was a legendary trip!"  He described the experience of visiting the modernized Anfield stadium, which he had previously seen in 2014 before renovations, and enjoying live music at the historic Cavern Club, famous for its association with The Beatles.

While the football match ended in a two-all draw, leaving Naidoo slightly disappointed with his team's performance, the overall atmosphere was electrifying. He noted the contrasting energy of the home fans, who were quiet during Manchester United's struggles but erupted in song towards the end.

The highlight of the trip, however, was undoubtedly meeting Michael Owen at his Manor House racing stables in Cheshire. "We enjoyed a tour of the yard, looking at the racing stables, and viewing the gallops and equine spa," Naidoo explained. "Then, we had drinks and a chat with Michael, where he signed our kit and spoke about his days as a player and his current life."

The trip concluded with a farewell dinner at the Cheshire racecourse, attended by former English player Mark Wright. For Naidoo, this dream trip was more than just a competition win; it was a chance to connect with his passion for football and meet his childhood hero, creating memories that will last a lifetime.

#Series Review: Netflix's "Baby Reindeer" explores the dark depths of obsession

Amidst the buzz surrounding its top-ranking status on Netflix, "Baby Reindeer" has captivated audiences with its gripping portrayal of obsession and manipulation.

Despite its initially off-putting title, the seven-part series delves into the disturbing world of a bartender, Donny Dunn, portrayed by Richard Gadd, who finds himself ensnared by the relentless pursuit of Martha Scott, played by Jessica Gunning.

Adapted from Gadd's own autobiographical one-man show, the series offers a harrowing glimpse into the complexities of human relationships and the consequences of unchecked obsession. From the outset, viewers are drawn into a chilling narrative as Martha's seemingly innocuous encounters with Donny gradually escalate into a sinister obsession.

As Donny's acts of kindness are misconstrued by Martha, her relentless pursuit becomes increasingly unsettling. Despite Donny's attempts to maintain boundaries, Martha's fixation intensifies, blurring the lines between admiration and manipulation. Gadd's nuanced portrayal of Donny's internal struggle adds depth to the narrative, highlighting the psychological toll of being ensnared in Martha's web.

Throughout the series, the tension continues to mount as Martha's presence looms large in Donny's life, infiltrating every aspect with her disturbing fixation. Gunning's portrayal of Martha is both compelling and chilling, capturing the character's unraveling psyche with unsettling precision.

As the series unfolds, viewers are confronted with uncomfortable truths about the nature of obsession and its devastating impact on both victim and perpetrator. The dynamic between Donny and Martha is fraught with tension, leaving viewers on edge as they navigate the murky depths of their relationship.

In addition to its exploration of obsession, "Baby Reindeer" also delves into themes of identity and trauma, offering a multifaceted narrative that keeps audiences engaged from start to finish. Through Donny's tumultuous journey, the series examines the complexities of sexuality and self-discovery, shedding light on the lasting effects of past trauma.

Ultimately, "Baby Reindeer" is a riveting exploration of the darkest corners of the human psyche. With its compelling performances and thought-provoking themes, the series is sure to leave a lasting impression on viewers long after the credits roll.

Springbok star Eben Etzebeth endorses Kaizer Chiefs

Eben Etzebeth, the renowned Springbok rugby star, has revealed his support for Kaizer Chiefs when it comes to South African football.

In an interview with Radio 2000, Etzebeth admitted that although he doesn't watch many local matches, he would support the struggling Amakhosi.

Thomas Tuchel linked with a big money move to Manchester United

Manchester United's struggles this season have been well documented, and it seems like the club is already preparing for a change in management. With Erik ten Hag under immense pressure, reports have emerged suggesting that the Red Devils have made contact with former Chelsea coach Thomas Tuchel to potentially take over at the end of the season.

The Dutchman is facing criticism for the team's poor performance, currently sitting in seventh place in the Premier League and facing a tough road to secure Champions League football for the next season. With rumors swirling about his departure, it seems like the club is already looking for a potential replacement.

German publication Kicker's writer Georg Holzner suggests that Tuchel has already been contacted by Manchester United, indicating that the club's owner James Ratcliffe highly values the former Chelsea coach. In the event that ten Hag is let go at the end of the season, Tuchel could potentially step in and take the reins at Old Trafford.
