Tyla's 'Jump' video sparks concerns over snack price hikes. But chill, Woolies isn't selling Go-Slo's for R100

Fans of singer Tyla have praised her latest music video, which features popular local snacks like Go-Slo's and Apple Munch ice lollies.

However, some viewers expressed concern that retailers would capitalize on the newfound popularity and raise prices.

Screenshots circulating online purportedly showed Woolworths marking up these products significantly. A pack of Go-Slo's, which normally sells for around R150 for 12, was listed for R99.99 for just 100g. Apple Munch lollies, typically sold for R120 for 96 units, were allegedly being sold for R17 per piece.

"The Tyla effect," one user exclaimed, calling out the supposed price gouging. However, Woolworths quickly responded to the allegations, stating that the screenshots were from a fake website and did not represent their official pricing.

"This is a fake website," Woolworths tweeted. "It does not belong to us."

In the meantime, Tyla's music video for "Jump" continues to accumulate views on YouTube, with over 2 million already logged.

DJ Zinhle humbles herself and apologizes for 'unemployable' comments

South African media personality and businesswoman DJ Zinhle has sparked controversy with comments she made about unemployment in a radio clip that went viral.

"It bugs me how long it takes us to fill positions at Era," Zinhle said, referring to her fashion accessory brand.

Zinhle's remarks were met with backlash on social media, with some accusing her of being insensitive to the high unemployment rate in South Africa.

"@nalathokozane said: "dj zinhle and those who agree with her are talking nonsense. zinhle herself only have matric from siyamukela high school.""

"@afroghanga said: "fellow south africans when you don't support celebrities like dj zinhle or pearl thusi they complain about us being unpatriotic but when we do the first chance they get they insult us. why isn't helping to upskill people then," "

Zinhle later took to social media to apologize for her comments, saying she was not trying to attack the youth.

"I wasn't attacking the youth at all, as a small business owner I do employ & train people, but this doesn't even start to solve the problems we are facing as the South African youth," Zinhle said.

"How do we up-skill our youth so that they are ready for employment? Are we in denial that we are not getting the jobs we want because we do not have the skills required?"

Zinhle's comments have sparked a debate about the role of business and government in addressing unemployment in South Africa.

Pearl Thusi gets emotional

Pearl Thusi recently celebrated her 36th birthday in a poignant and emotional way, as she wished for the presence of her late parents on her special day. The "Queen Sono" actress lost her mother over 19 years ago and her father passed away in 2020.

In a heartfelt Instagram post, Thusi shared her feelings of longing and nostalgia for her parents, expressing how much she missed them on her birthday. She revealed, "I've been feeling a lot of big feelings lately… grateful that my kids are already at school and don't have to see me like this. But I'm so happy to be feeling. And maybe crying on your birthday is okay – it's all the love I still have for my parents yearning to be felt by them."

Despite the overwhelming emotions she experienced, Thusi reflected on the strength and resilience she has gained from her parents. She expressed, "I'm feeling everything… joy, sadness, excitement, love, hope, fears. What I'd do to get a call from them. I miss my dad's voice in a heartbreaking and wrenching way. But with all the despair I may often feel at the losses I've had to take through the years, I'm still standing, tall and proud, so just in case they see everything – they didn't die in vain."

As she navigated through the bittersweet memories of her past birthdays, Thusi found solace in the love and support she received from her parents. She hoped that her special day could serve as a reminder of the powerful and enduring love she inherited from them. Reflecting on her journey as a mother, she mused, "Giving birth and raising a child is tough – hope I'm making it worth it. My mom would be proud and my dad pretended he wasn't phased until I heard the stories he was telling people when I wasn't there. 'Yimi uBaba kaPearl Thusi' 😂."

In celebrating her birthday, Pearl Thusi paid tribute to her late parents with a mix of tears, laughter, and gratitude, honoring the legacy of love they left behind.

Taxi driver becomes a doctor and immediately gets a job #BestMornings

Lindani Mzize, a 26-year-old from Mbizana, has defied the odds by graduating as a medical doctor from Walter Sisulu University (WSU). His path to success was paved with immense challenges, including witnessing his mother's murder at the young age of 14 and battling post-traumatic stress disorder and financial hardship.

Mzize's journey to becoming a doctor was not easy. After matriculating in 2016, he initially enrolled in a Bachelor of Science degree at the University of KwaZulu-Natal but later dropped out. To support himself, he began driving a taxi. However, his dream of becoming a healthcare professional remained strong.

"Graduating has left me speechless," Mzize shared. "It still feels like a dream because the road was not easy." He credits his late mother as his inspiration, stating, "Everything that I did was for my late mom who passed away in 2012."

Despite the challenges, Mzize persevered. He applied to study medicine at WSU and continued driving a taxi during holidays to maintain financial independence. "I knew it would be difficult at the beginning of every year because the funding takes time to reflect in our accounts," he explained.  "Thinking ahead, I made a point in the holidays of working hard and saving so I'd have money to sustain me for the first three months while waiting for funding."

Mzize's story is a testament to the power of resilience and determination. He hopes his journey will inspire others facing adversity to pursue their dreams. He is now set to begin his internship at General Justice Gizenza Mpanza Regional Hospital in KwaZulu-Natal, marking the beginning of a new chapter in his life.

#DrinksReview: Amarula gin is balanced and refreshing

Amarula Gin is an exciting new addition to the world of spirits, crafted from the fruit of the marula tree. This distinctive gin is made using the white pulp of the marula fruit, which is hand-picked and carefully processed to preserve its fresh, fruity flavors.

The production process involves fermenting and distilling the marula pulp to form the spirit of marula, followed by blending with botanicals. Sweet and subtle notes of juniper berries and orange blossom harmonize perfectly with the exotic marula fruit, resulting in a balanced and refreshing gin.

Amarula Gin's African roots give it a unique character that can be appreciated by gin enthusiasts worldwide, whether enjoyed neat or with tonic. The marula fruit, known for its rich flavor, grows on tall, wild marula trees found across sub-Saharan Africa.

By mid-February, the marula fruit ripens, attracting the attention of wildlife, especially elephants who seek out the fruit as a favorite snack.

The tasting notes of Amarula Gin are a delightful journey through floral spices and freshness on the nose, followed by juniper berry, orange blossom, and marula fruit on the palate. The gin finishes with a fresh, balanced touch that leaves a lasting impression.

Inspirational lady creates opportunities for South African freelancers to work remotely for overseas companies

Di Luden, a Gqeberha resident with a heart firmly rooted in the Eastern Cape, has taken her international experience and channeled it into creating opportunities for South Africans to work remotely for overseas companies.  After a successful career on super-yachts, Luden co-founded Ubuntu Freelancers, a platform connecting South African talent with global clients.

Luden's journey began with a desire for a more settled lifestyle after years of globetrotting as a purser on luxury yachts.  "I never imagined moving back to the Eastern Cape," she admitted, "but life has a funny way of choosing a path for you." The COVID-19 pandemic provided the catalyst for change, prompting Luden to explore remote work options.

Inspired by a friend who was successfully working remotely for US clients, Luden secured her own international client and relished the flexibility and international exposure it offered.  "I absolutely loved that I was still getting an international taste while living in Gqeberha," she shared.

The seed for Ubuntu Freelancers was planted during a casual conversation with her cousin.  Luden's belief in the potential of South African talent, combined with the increasing demand for remote work, led them to explore the idea further.  "We are naturally hardworking, diligent people," she remarked, confident in the abilities of her fellow South Africans.

In November 2021, Ubuntu Freelancers was born, aiming to bridge the gap between South African freelancers and international clients seeking skilled professionals.  Luden's venture exemplifies the spirit of Ubuntu, harnessing the power of community and collaboration to create opportunities that transcend borders.
