Popular South African musician and reality TV star Busiswa Gqulu weighs in on the gender-based violence (GBV) fight within the music industry and how women within the music space have had to compromise themselves to get recognition and respect.
In a one-on-one at the 10-day True Music Studios festival hosted by Ballantine's Scotch whisky in partnership with Boiler Room, Gqulu explained the dangers a woman in the music industry came with.
She said most of the time, gigs were at night, which meant travelling at night in a country where women are targets of GBV.
"It's hard for us because we live in a country that rapes and kills women more than any other country in the world.
"This is a travesty for women who want to be in the entertainment industry. In most instances, a lot of women I know got married and left the industry or got pregnant. This is heart-breaking," said Gqulu.
