Life's greatest moments are always worth celebrating. And every celebration must forever linger on like icing on a cake.
Mary Mathebula has made it her business to ensure that celebrations are redefined through creativity.
She is the founder of Demaries Creations - a leading confectionery business that specialises in affordable custom celebration cakes. Be it a wedding, birthday, baby shower, graduation, basically they are your go to "buddies" for any kind of celebration.
But how was the company established? Mary isn't shy to hint that the concept was born after she realized that she needed extra income to supplement her budget.
"Well money was my motivation (😂🤦🏽♂). Yes, i wanted to make extra cash and since i enjoyed baking for my family during the weekends, i then decided to start selling some of my bakes at work. I later attended a cake decorating workshop, which is where i fell in love with cake decorating. Like they say, the rest is history," she attested in a free ranging interview with Trends Mzansi.
So popular are the products that Demaries creates that social media is always abuzz.
"The public has really embraced our concept well. I mean when you meet people who know you and your work but you dont know them, then you know you are doing something right," she disclosed.
Mary took us through the baking process and its worth mentioning that everything begins from scratch.
"Everything from our kitchen is made from scratch with quality ingredients, other than that we make sure that we create what the client wants thus making each cake that leaves our kitchen, one of its kind," she said.
But the well spoken wife and mum is never alone in the kitchen. Her artistic husband ensures that every order is quality perfected.
The couple has surely proved that a husband and wife can venture into business together.
"Currently, I work with my husband who is a great help. He is very artistic so whatever requires an artistic hand i know im sorted. He also doubles as a cool head when mine gets heated," she smiled.
Mary's father owned a spaza shop and that equipped her with entrepreneurial skills that have come in handy in her business.
Stints with Avon and Tupperware also helped shape her skills.
"I must acknowledge that I come from an entrepreneurial background since my dad owned a spaza shop and i used to assist him during weekends and school holidays. I also did a lot of selling myself, the likes of Tupperware, Avon, Avroy Shlain, Honey and others that i dont remember. This is the longest i have stayed with one business though, from 2015," she disclosed.
Her future plans are expanding the business to employ more people and also offer training.
Her clients happiness is her ultimate satisfaction.
And her advice to aspiring entrepreneurs is simple.
"Start now, with what you have, what you need will find you busy," she advices.
