Thandiswa Mazwai's amazing journey continues

Afro-soul musician Thandiswa Mazwai has been announced as the recipient of the Simon Nkoli Award at the 15th annual Feathers Awards. 


This prestigious award recognizes excellence within the LGBTQI+ community. The nominations for this year's awards will be revealed on Friday.

Thandiswa Mazwai, a 47-year-old member of Bongo Maffin, was announced as the recipient of the Simon Nkoli Award during the hoisting of the rainbow Pride flag at Constitution Hill in Johannesburg. 

This event took place as part of Pride Month, which is celebrated globally in support of the LGBTQI+ community. The ceremony was attended by other notable stars including Ponahalo Mojapelo, Yaya Mavundla, and Tumi Powerhouse.

The Simon Nkoli Award is named in honor of the iconic queer freedom fighter, Simon Nkoli. 

It recognizes a public figure who has made significant contributions to the LGBTQI+ community throughout their career. Previous recipients of this prestigious award include renowned fashion designer David Tlale, acclaimed choreographer Gregory Maqoma, and talented singer Gloria Bosman.

Thandiswa Mazwai's selection as the recipient of the Simon Nkoli Award is a testament to her immense impact and dedication to advancing LGBTQI+ rights and representation. 

Mazwai has been an influential figure in the music industry, using her platform to advocate for social justice and equality. Her artistry and activism have resonated with audiences, making her a deserving recipient of this esteemed award.

The Feathers Awards, now in its 15th year, aims to celebrate and honor individuals and organizations that have positively contributed to the LGBTQI+ community in South Africa. 

This event not only recognizes achievements but also serves as a platform to raise awareness and promote inclusivity and acceptance.
