Spur just got a R7.1 billion bite!

Chain restaurant owner Spur Corporation reported a 1.3% increase in total franchised restaurant sales to R7.1 billion in the year to June 30, 2018.

Spur said franchised restaurant sales in South Africa grew by 1.5%, but sales from international restaurants declined by 0.7% in Rand terms. The results exclude the Captain DoRegos chain, which was sold in March 2018.

In South Africa, 44 new restaurants were opened and 18 closed during the year, while 11 restaurants were opened and nine closed internationally.

Pierre van Tonder, group chief executive, said the Spur brand had continued its recovery in the second half of the financial year after a 6.1% decline in the first half, adding the local trading environment was likely to remain subdued until the economy was able to grow sustainably.

Van Tonder said the group's strategic shift in reducing reliance on discounting, and replacing it with promotion and product improvement, had improved franchisee margins and ensured the franchise's financial model remained sustainable.

Spur Group has 569 outlets worldwide, with restaurants in various parts of Africa, Mauritius, the Middle East and Australasia, consisting of Spur International, Spur Steak Ranches, Panarottis Pizza Pasta, John Dory's Fish Grill Sushi, The Hussar Grill, RocoMamas, Spur Grill & Go and Casa Bella.

Wenzile Madonsela- Msimanga is a name you need to remember.

She is a democracy defender, an activist and in her final year studying towards her LLB and wants to pursue Masters in Human Rights Law next.

She served as the transformation officer at the Black Lawyers Association and is currently Company Secretary and Chief Ambassador at the Thuli Madonsela Foundation which seeks to deepen and defend democracy through concerted dialogues, advocacy, research and training.

At the young age of 20 she had already dabbled in politics too as she served as the General Secretary and then later social welfare officer at the University of Pretoria under the EFF student command. During her term, her branch saw the success of the university workers insourced and transformation policies during "Afrikaans must fall", implemented. She was also involved in the research involved for Advocate T Madonsela's book "Our time: No more tea makers".

While still pursuing her studies, she is committed to her fundamental theory that it takes a community to raise a child. That's why she started a Woman's Leadership Training programme called the "Princess Chronicles" under her and her husbands consulting company Unafundo PTY LTD. The programme seeks to train young woman on self-acceptance, living consciously, acting with integrity, living purposefully, being self-assertive and most importantly adapting into the digital revolution and functioning in a global village.

Teaching your children how to use #smartphones responsibly

Smartphones are such a central part of life today that the question is no longer if a child will get a mobile device, but when. Used responsibly, they can be powerful educational tools, give parents the peace of mind of knowing their children are always reachable, and help children come to grips with tech from a young age.

Here are some ideas on how parents can help their children make responsible use of smartphones and mobile devices.

1.       It starts with a conversation

Before even purchasing a smartphone for a son or daughter, parents can lay the groundwork for the child to use technology in a responsible way. Ahead of giving the child a device, you can discuss elements of smartphone ownership such as how the child will look after the device, which apps and tools he or she wishes to use, cyber-threats like cyberbullying, and what sort of device you will purchase.

2.       Set a good example

We depend on our smartphones for work and our personal lives, to the extent that they are an extension of ourselves, and we are not always conscious of how often we look at them. Be mindful of how you use your own devices and set the right example for your children. If you look at your smartphone at the dinner table or in bed at night, you should not be surprised if they do the same.

3.       Establish appropriate boundaries

Children need some guidelines from their parents if they are to learn to use their mobile devices in a responsible manner. For example, how many hours in a day may a child use the phone and other screens? How much freedom does he or she have in choosing which apps to download and which content to interact with?

How much data and airtime will children be allowed to use each month? Do you pay or must they pay out of their pocket money? Are you okay with a child using the Internet without supervision? May the child play games on the mobile device? Are there some tasks that the child must do on the family computer rather than a mobile device?

The rules will vary from family to family, so parents need to reflect on their values and their expectations before setting the guidelines. Naturally, the rules will evolve as a child grows older and hopefully learns to self-regulate.

4.       Monitor and discuss the content and apps your child is using

When children first start using a smartphone, doing spot checks on the apps they're using and the websites they are viewing can be a good way to set limits. Be honest about what you will be monitoring and encourage children to speak to you if they have an interaction with or see some content that makes them uncomfortable.

There are many powerful tools and apps you can use to review apps on a child's phone, and block and restrict them; filter kids' access to content online; manage how they use messaging apps; track their whereabouts in an emergency; etc. Some examples include Norton Family Premier, ESET Parental Control and Net Nanny.

Boity Thulo streams into music with her first single set to be released sooooooon.....

Boity Thulo continues making a name for herself in the entertainment industry.

The actress announced on Instagram that she would be releasing a single.

She previously dabbled in music when she rapped with Nasty C on Club 808 last year. She then stole the show at the Migos Culture Tour in Johannesburg when she joined Nasty C on stage to debut a song the duo collaborated on.

Think Nasty C just dropped a track with Boity#MigosCultureTour#SizenzaZonkepic.twitter.com/5W89DDPPFR

— Tracksuit (@ThabisoMosia)October 21, 2017

At the time, Boity said people should not expect her to spit any more bars soon, as she was taking her music aspirations slowly, reported Tshisa Live.

"Right now, I am just having fun, but who knows what the future will bring? I love a lot of genres, so I could go into anything if the chance arises."

It appears all that may have changed with the release of her new single, which may mark the start of a serious music career.

Fans have reacted positively to the news, but several of her followers mistook her for Nadia Nakai because of the blonde wig.

The next big thing or what??? #Huawei plans on releasing the worlds first foldable #smartphone in 2019

Huawei, the world's third-largest smartphone maker, is reportedly planning to beat Samsung to market with the world's first foldable smartphone, according to the Nikkei Asian Review.

The foldable phone, which could launch in early 2019, will reportedly use a flexible OLED display made by China's BOE Technology Group.

Even though BOE's screen technology is said to be inferior to Samsung's own, that's apparently not stopping Huawei — it's intent is to be first, which would showcase itself as an innovator capable of leapfrogging Samsung.

Echoing an earlier Wall Street Journal report on Samsung's plans for its own foldable phone expected to launch sometime next year as well, Huawei's foldable phone might only be produced in limited quantities of up to 30,000 units.

With so few units planned, it's unlikely that Huawei wants its first foldable phone to replace its flagship Android phones. Instead, the company's probably hoping it'll click with early adopters — perhaps the same mobile gamer niche Samsung is reportedly targeting with its foldable phone.

Beyond Huawei's ambitions to beat Samsung to market, there are no additional details on the foldable phone.

In contrast, more info on Samsung's foldable phone continues to surface. The WSJ's report previously said Samsung's foldable phone display would measure about 7 inches and fold in half like a wallet. When folded up, the rear would feature a "small display bar" and cameras on the front.

Adding to the WSJ, the Nikkei Asian Review claims Samsung's foldable phone will be "no thicker than an iPhone 8 or 8 Plus" and sport a 7.3-inch screen when fully open.

The report also says Samsung's foldable phone will have one durability limitation: It'll only fold 20,000 times. Additionally, the Nikkei also echoes the foldable phone's potentially high price tag of $1,500-2,000.

With both Samsung and Huawei now reportedly planning foldable phones for early next year, you have to wonder if such devices will really be the next big thing or just a passing fad.

My bet's on the latter — I think they're dead on arrival — but lots of people also cast doubt on Samsung's "curved glass edge" as nothing more than a gimmick and they were proven wrong.

Whatever the case is, 2019's gonna be very interesting year for phones.

Get set...ready... blood #moon to dazzle SA sky tonight. Rare lunar eclipse to grace #Mzansi in one of the “astronomical highlights” of the year

Look up to the sky and you'll be in for a massive spectacle on Friday night.

The longest lunar eclipse (the total eclipse of the moon) of the 21st century will dazzle the sky and turn the moon a beautiful red hue.

The Astronomical Society of Southern Africa (ASSA) says it's one of the "astronomical highlights" of the year.

No special equipment is required to see the spectacle, so you have no excuse!

Things start to get exciting when the moon begins to appear to change shape from 20:24.

From 21:30 until 23:13 the moon will be totally eclipsed.

At 00:19, the moon will be out of the Earth's umbral shadow and the show will be over.

The moon will appear normal by 01:30.

For the super keen

Several South African organisations are set to host eclipse-watching events.

If you'd like to be a part of the hype, telescopes for planet-viewing will be available at these public eclipse-watch events:

At the old Observatory, in Observatory, Johannesburg, hosted by Astronomical Society of SA (Jhb)At the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town, hosted by the SA Astronomical Observatory and the Astronomical Society of SA (CT)At Pearly Beach, near Gansbaai, hosted by the Southern Cape Astronomical Society.

Don't miss the planets

Another wonderful about the eclipse is that on this night, four planets will be easily visible to the naked eye, says the ASSA.

"If you look for them, you'll see that they stretch in a line across the sky, from Venus in the west to Mars and the Moon in the east – you're looking at our flat solar system from the inside," it says on its website.

Venus is the very bright "evening star", high in the west as the Sun sets; a small telescope with good optics and enough magnification will show a "half-Venus" – Venus has phases, like the Moon. Venus will set as the eclipse starts.

Jupiter is also worth looking at with a small telescope – look for its four largest moons.

Saturn is another good telescope target – look for the rings.

Mars is at its brightest this week and noticeably orange – completely coincidentally, our planet is passing Mars, and we're closer this time than we have been since 2003. It will be near the eclipsed Moon – very cool sight!

You will only be able to witness this rare lunar eclipse again in 2025.

Award winning actress Baby Cele spurns big TV role

South African award winning actress, Baby Cele has opened up on why she turned down a big Television gig. She turned down that major deal over money.

During an interview, Baby told TshisaLIVE that she recently had a run-in with a big name production over payment.

She adds that she felt insulted when they announced to her the less payment she was set to received from the big name TV production for three months hard work that they were supposed to receive from her.

Baby Cele says that the payment she was meant to receive from the company was less and that she earned that kind of salary way back 15 years ago.

The "My Perfect Family" actress decides not to mention names and also the Television company but rather reveals she turned down the job over money.

"What frustrates me the most about the industry is payments. You have to fight all the time. Recently, I felt so insulted. I received a call, and I won't mention names, but one of the producers got someone from their office to call me. They wanted me to join their soapie. It was a big name, and it was before Uzalo.

"When they told me the fee, how much I was going to get for three months work, it was appalling. I used to get that fee years ago, more than 15 years ago,"  Baby Cele said.

Baby Cele is popularly known for her acting roles in movies such as; "Jump The Gun," "Voices of Sarafina!", "Backstage."

The actress thinks that the low payments big companies make frustrate always work and the entertainment industry, for example, she turned down a big TV gig after hearing from the producer who called her to let her know how much she was supposed to receive after delivering her services to the company.

#MotivationThursday: Never give up on your dreams! #DJFresh nearly gave up on #radio but continued chasing waves till a breakthrough came #FreshBreakfast

DJ Fresh has worked at some of the biggest radio stations in the country but told listeners of his breakfast show this week that he had knocked on doors and dropped off demos at radio stations for five years before getting his break.

Metro FM host DJ Fresh may be one of the most popular radio personalities in the country, but there was a time when he nearly abandoned his radio dream to focus on other things. He said that at one point he even stopped sending demos because he just couldn't get a foot in the door.

"I pretty much stopped and then the YFM opportunity appeared. But I had stopped sending demos because I was like nobody is responding. Nobody is calling."

Fresh said that he got so disheartened that he decided to focus his energy on school instead. Only to finally get his break.

"After five years of trying and trying, I stopped because I was like let me focus on school. So that is what I did, and then the light shone." Fresh has spoken before about the difficulties of breaking into the industry, claiming that in the age of Insta-fame and twelebs, talent can get lost.

"There are people that are passionate about radio and they're not getting gigs. If you have a million followers you'll get onto radio," he said at a magazine launch last year.

He added that it was something that was prominent in the acting industry as well. Fresh has been doing the most to try to give people a break into the industry, mentoring several people and handing out bursaries with Boston Media House.

Wanna own a mansion, travel the world like #Bonang and never be broke for life? R100 mil could be yours this Friday. Simply #PhandaPushaPlay! #Powerball

For the first time in 18 years, the South African PowerBall jackpot for 27 July is sitting at an estimated jackpot of R110 million.

According to the Operator of the National Lottery, ITHUBA, this is a milestone for ITHUBA and for the South African lottery industry as a whole.

"It is no secret that a jackpot of this magnitude attracts a lot of players. This means that as the National Lottery Operator, our weekly, 27% contribution towards supporting charity courses increases —this is money that is going towards helping support essential needs of disadvantaged South Africans.

This has always been ITHUBA's intention: to contribute positively and actively to socio-economic development", said Khensani Mabuza, member of the Executive team at ITHUBA.

In January, LOTTO reached a guaranteed jackpot of R110 million.  This ground-breaking jackpot was won by four people and one of the winners was a woman who was a first time LOTTO player.

"All winners receive extensive financial advice and in addition, trauma counselling from qualified psychologists to help them deal with the new financial changing circumstances. Both these services are at no cost to the winner," said ITHUBA in a statement.

#MoneyManagement: Effective ways to #save big time. #GirlTalkZA

The simplest money management strategy to follow, is to spend less and save more. This strategy will go a long way in helping you achieve your financial goals and dreams and give you direction in terms of how your money should be managed. Building a savings strategy should not be tedious, but rather an easy and empowering process.

"Savings should be a priority for everyone who wishes to be financially independent and should be actively managed on an ongoing basis. Consumer needs and wants differ, some may save for a holiday, while others may opt to put their money in a savings account until they have defined their savings goals. Whatever the choice, we encourage consumers to start saving regularly," says Himal Parbhoo, CEO FNB Retail Cash Investments.

He adds that, "Your savings strategy should ideally encompass ongoing planning, effective budget management, identification of short, medium and longer-term goals and objectives and regular monitoring. Sticking to this strategy will help you steer clear of unnecessary debt and help you live a happier and healthier financial life."

Parbhoo unpacks 5 principles to ensure effective Money Management and an empowering Savings Strategy:

Time is of the essence: Wealth creation happens over time. The longer and the more you save, the greater the growth and returns earned. Compound interests, which describes earning interest on interest, significantly boosts the rate of growth of money saved over time. So, saving consistently over a long period of time will generally yield better results than saving more money over a short amount of time.

Start saving sooner rather than later:The sooner you start saving the better it will be for you in the long-run, as you establish a healthy savings habit early on, rather than to make big savings sacrifices later in life.

Pay yourself first: If you are serious about accumulating wealth and healthy savings – you will adopt the principle of paying yourself first. Put away a healthy percentage, for example 10% or 20% of your salary in a savings or investment account, on payday and then spend the rest according to your budget, rather than to save what is left at the end of the month. Your savings will grow and help you reach your financial goals sooner.

Consider a range of savings and investment options: Look at savings and investments that suit your lifestyle. Consumers also have the option of investing in Tax-Free Savings Accounts, which enable you to enjoy the full benefits of your savings and investments. With Tax-Free Savings Accounts customers can top up on their existing Tax-Free Savings Account portfolio for maximum gains, within the annual and lifetime contribution limit.

Reinvest your extra cash: Money that was allocated to pay-up loans, can be reinvested in savings, once the loans are settled. This is a great way to ensure that you do not pick up or spend your available funds on unnecessary things.

Ongoing information gathering to build a better understanding of the financial landscape is important in managing your savings. "The more you know, the better financial decisions you will make. Strive to access financial information every day to help you grow your knowledge and develop an innate propensity for saving and growing your money," concludes Parbhoo.

FNB offers a range of savings and cash investments where you will not only benefit from attractive interest rates, but your capital and quoted returns are fully guaranteed, meaning there is no risk of losing your hard-earned money.

The #BRICSSummit in #Sandton is more than just a #PR bunfight

The 10th Brics summit, which begins today in Sandton, might be dismissed by cynics as yet another talkshop and public relations bunfight. But that view would be not only simplistic, it would be incorrect.

More than 1 000 government representatives and business people from Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa will attend the summit. Heads of state Vladimir Putin, Xi Jinping, Michel Temer, and Narendra Modi are expected to attend.

And, even before the official proceedings have got under way, the deal making has already begun, including an announcement by President Cyril Ramaphosa that agreements in principle covering possible investments in South Africa from China – totalling $14.7 billion (about R195 billion) – have been reached.

Many South Africans have grown up with the idea that "the West" is where our national interests naturally lie. In part this is a heritage of colonialism; in part because we share the same language, English, as the big Western nations, the United States and the UK. Also, that belief was helped along by the fact that, in the past, "non-aligned" was a term which effectively meant "anti-West".

The world has changed remarkably in the past three decades, though, and the Brics bloc seeks to offer an alternative global economic relationship which aims at empowering developing countries. It is in our interest to cultivate these links, if for nothing more than they give us other options for our trade and exports. This is especially crucial now, as the US government – under a president who believes Africa consists of "s***hole" countries – has imposed extra tariffs on some of our exports there, threatening South African jobs.

At the same time, we need to be very aware of the danger that the other, powerful members of Brics could become our future colonisers and exploiters.

South Africa has signed several agreements with China following a bilateral meeting between Presidents' Cyril Ramaphosa and Xi Jinping on Tuesday.

These include the simplification of visa requirements for certain categories of visitors.

There's also an agreement in trade and industry and agriculture and fisheries.

The Chinese President arrived in the country on Monday, ahead of the Brics summit which gets underway on Wednesday at the Sandton Convention centre.

President Ramaphosa described the talks with his Chinese counterpart as successful and wide-ranging.

"We've signed several agreements and memorandums of understanding that intended to further deepen our relations including investment that has been struck to the value of 14.7 billion dollars.

"President Xi has indicated that China is ready to invest and work with South Africa in various sectors such as infrastructure, ocean economy, green economy, science and technology, agriculture and environment, as well as finance," Ramaphosa said.

6 simple tweaks to speed up your #Android smartphone

If you have had your smartphone for a while, you might be finding that it's no longer as fast and responsive as it was when you first got it. The good news is that cleaning up some unwanted apps and data and making a few simple tweaks can often put the zip back into your trusty Android device.

Alcatel offers a few suggestions about how you can improve the speed of an Android smartphone that is not as quick as it used to be:

1.       Have you switched it off and on again?

Sometimes, simply powering the device down and switching it on again can be enough to pep up performance!

2.       Delete unneeded apps and data

One of the most common reasons for performance problems with an older smartphone is that you have used up most of its storage space. This is easily remedied by removing the apps you are no longer using and the data that you don't need.

To fix the problem:

·         Go to settings, look for the app manager and uninstall apps you no longer require.

·         Look at your photo and music libraries and check if there is media you are happy to delete. You could also back your files up to the cloud or a PC so that you can remove them from your smartphone.

·         Check the downloads folder – you may have many unneeded files there wasting storage space.

3.       Turn off widgets and animations

If you're running a bunch of widgets and are experiencing poor smartphone performance, disable the ones you are not using or even all of them if your device is particularly slow.  The same goes for animations – they might look great, but they can slow down an older smartphone.

To remove widgets: Navigate to the widget and give it a long press. Then drag the widget to remove.

To switch off animations:

·         Go to settings, tap 'about phone', then tap on 'build number' several times to enable developer mode,

·         Navigate to settings - developer options and look for 'window animation scale'.

·         Tap on animation options to switch them off.

4.       Flush your cache

After a while, your phone's cache might become crammed with data and files that drag down performance. Go to settings, tap storage and then cached data and then clear the cache.

5.       Close apps you are not using

If you have several apps running in the background, close the ones you don't need. You can look at the running apps list to see which apps you are running and the memory they are consuming.

6.       Update your software

Do not ignore that notification that pops up on your screen, instructing you to install the latest software version available. Updating your software will enhance your phone's functionality and security.

Internationally acclaimed Terry Pheto in new movie role #Faces

Showing the impact of living with Aids in 2018‚ the movie from award-winning British-Nigerian director Joseph A. Adesunloye will have its world premiere at the Durban International Film Festival on Sunday night.

The 82-minute drama tells of the shared experience of minority communities.

"When the director contacted me‚ I said yes immediately‚" said Pheto. "I always want to challenge myself and get out of my comfort zone."

She said she met Adesunloye in the UK when she was there in 2017 to collect her award as best supporting actress for her role as Naledi Khama in the movie A United Kingdom at the National Film
Awards UK.

The movie tells the love story of Botswana's first president Seretse Khama and Londoner Ruth Williams.

"He approached me there and said he wanted to work with me‚ so when he started this project he gave me a call."

She also won Best Actress - TV or Drama in 2017 for her role as Winnie Mandela in the BET series Madiba.

#Blitzboks claim bronze at #RWC7s

The Springbok Sevens team claimed third place and the bronze medal at the 2018 Rugby World Cup Sevens, played at AT&T Park in San Francisco on Sunday. The Blitzboks secured a 24-19 win over Fiji to claim a second medal in two months and cap off another stellar season.

The team won the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series in June for a second consecutive year and added bronze to their medal tally. The team finished fourth at the Commonwealth Games – their lowest placing in a major sporting event for the season.

Solid performances against Ireland and Scotland on Friday and Saturday respectively, counted for very little as they were outplayed by England in the semifinals of the tournament, losing 29-7 early on Sunday (SA time).

The team bounced back against Fiji later in the same afternoon, and played some brilliant rugby to end the season with a commanding performance.

Springbok Sevens coach, Neil Powell, said the team were happy with the medal, although not the colour.

"What is most pleasing for me is the fact that, after that disappointment against England, we came out firing against Fiji and outplayed them to finish the season on a very strong performance.

"We have lost against them six times during the World Series, so to be able to beat them here was a huge effort from the players. We will never be happy with anything but first place, but the bronze medal does help to justify the efforts and sacrifices a little bit."

Powell congratulated New Zealand on winning the Rugby World Cup Sevens tournament.

"They clearly know how to pitch for once-off tournaments, as they also won the Commonwealth Games gold, so well done to them. It was a great effort from them."

The Blitzboks arrive back in South Africa on Wednesday.

#BRICS must focus on #investment led trade

South Africa's Trade and Industry Minister Dr Rob Davies told participants at a Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa (BRICS) business meeting that partner nations should focus on investment-led trade, "instead of it being the other way around".

Davies was speaking at a specially convened investment session on Sunday during the BRICS Business Council meeting being held at the Chief Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre (ICC) in Durban.

"In this global environment, we need to play catch-up on the investment front. We need investment-led trade instead of the other way around," he said.

The biggest recent news on the African continent, he said, was the establishment of the African Free Trade Agreement. "We are a signatory to the framework but there is still lots of work to be done to make it commercially viable," said Davies.

South Africa signed on to the agreement in early July, about three months after a number of other African countries had done so.

Davies said it was important to not only increase trade on the continent, but to ensure quality of trade. When it came to regional integration, "our approach must be developmental," he said.

"Regional integration must be complemented by regional infrastructure development. This is where the BRICS New Development Bank comes in. We have a significant backlog that has to be addressed."

He said countries were entering a period of turbulence in the global trading system. The US is increasing tariffs in violation of many trade agreements to favour certain nations, which does not assist the global economy.

New technologies were happening in the context of a world with huge levels of inequality where there was a "winner takes all" attitude. The outlook in BRICS was different, he said.

"We don't want masters, we want an inclusive roll-out of new technologies that will create better lives for the citizens of the world. BRICS is an important institution in that connection."

South Africa was working hard to address policy uncertainties, added Davies. "Since president Cyril Ramaphosa has taken over, there has been a commitment to clean up the challenges facing the country."

The country was addressing uncertainties in the renewable energy sector and had removed "blockages" caused by lack of action. "There is scope for investment now".

Interesting #sex positions that double up as exercise - #FridayFeeling

Standing

Standing is one of the most challenging positions. Not only does your man have to be fully capable of supporting you, you also need to balance your movements and penetration. It really does test your core and upper-leg strength.

This position works the leg muscles as you need to keep yourself upright. The woman has to work her core for balance, and her arms especially if she's got her hands against a wall to help thrust.

Seated

In this position, he's sitting on the couch or chair and you're on top, with one of your feet on the sofa and the other on the ground.

This position will work your left glute and your right hamstring. When you're halfway there, switch your legs, so you'll work both sides of your body evenly. If the chair is high and you have to stand on your tippy-toes, you'll work your calves, too.

The cowgirl

With the standard cow girl position, you're on top with your knees on the bed, enabling you to flex your lower abs and pelvic muscles.

To make things even more intense, switch things up and reposition yourself into a frog like position resting your feet on the bed rather than your knees.

As you straddle him, the position ultimately becomes like low squats which target your quads (the front thigh muscles), hips and butt. You can even move towards the front and back to work the rest of the muscle group as well as the pelvic area.

DJ Sbu set to expand business empire with new premium #vodka range - #LokoFlame

Radio personality and entrepreneur Sibusiso Leope, aka DJ Sbu, is pushing boundaries and expanding his business empire with the launch of his premium vodka range Loko Flame.

The self-proclaimed chief hustler is preparing to launch his home-grown "world-class" vodka just in time for spring festivities.

According to Loko Flame's website, the vodka's taste profile "boasts a distinctive earthy note and silky texture", while the ingredients are from the North West.

DJ Sbu says his new alcohol range is the product of hard work and dedication – traits that he says are central to succeeding as an entrepreneur.

He demonstrated this back in 2016 when he took to the streets of Joburg to sell his proudly SA energy drink Mofaya.

He killed two birds with one stone – promoting his brand, while raising awareness for the SLEF Benefit Concert.

"Building from the ground up requires patience, which most of us don't have. We all want a quick pay-day," he said.

Instead, he advised aspiring entrepreneurs not to rush or take corners when growing their businesses, saying entrepreneurs should rather take their time crafting a business plan and execution strategy.

"Relax, learn, focus and build gradually. It takes time, but it can be done," he said.

But not everyone is pleased with the DJ's latest business venture.

Outspoken poet Ntsiki Mazwai took to Twitter to take a jab at DJ Sbu, calling him out for not using his "marketing genius" to focus on a more positive product that uplifts the nation, as opposed to a product that, when abused, damages lives.

"Eish moFaya now has an alcholic range what a waste of a marketing genius to make the nation drunk. Why can't you use your gift Dj Sbu?" she asked.

Explaining her comments, Mazwai said she was unapologetic about being "anti-booze" because "it is the leading cause of most social ills. Alcohol has broken our nation and we know it".

DJ Sbu, however, seemed unperturbed by her concerns, writing in an Instagram post that while he respects and understands where she's coming from, he also reminded her that at the end of the day he's an entrepreneur and that they think differently.

He also took the opportunity to announce further additions to his beverage range, with a sugar-free version of the Mofaya energy drink, as well as a still and sparkling mineral water range, set for launch soon.

#NelsonMandela's #Houghton Home to Be Transformed Into Hotel #Mandela100

With a refurbishment project expected to start soon at Nelson Mandela's first Houghton home, contractors have given the assurance that the original appearance of the late former president's home will be retained.

Madiba's first home after he left the Presidency will now be turned into a boutique hotel for diplomats, scholars and world leaders.

The Nelson Mandela Foundation unveiled the plans during a sod-turning ceremony on Thirteenth Avenue where it confirmed the dilapidated house will be transformed into The Nelson Mandela Presidential Centre.

Thebe Tourism Group CEO Jerry Mabena says architects will respect the building by restoring the dilapidated home to its original form.

Mabena says the architects will aim to create a place where world leaders can be inspired at the iconic location.

"Landscaping and artwork will fill the space, evoking memories of Nelson Mandela with the aim being to design a building sanctioned for individuals specifically for how they are intended to be used."

While details about the cost of staying a night in this boutique hotel have not yet been revealed, the Nelson Mandela Foundation says it will be open to the public on the days that it's not occupied by diplomats, scholars or world leaders.

#KZN Records Highest #HIV Prevalence in SA

A new study by the Human Sciences Research Council shows the country has made progress in addressing the HIV epidemic, despite all nine provinces showing an upward trend in HIV prevalence.

The study surveyed over 33,000 South Africans across the country since last year.

It reveals that the province with the highest HIV prevalence rate is KwaZulu-Natal, where over a quarter of the region's population is living with the disease.

This is followed closely by the Free State and the Eastern Cape.

Although the Western Cape reflects the lowest rate of HIV prevalence at 12.6%, the study's principal investigator Mpumi Zungu says the province has seen an unprecedented rise.

"We're saying there's a need to do more research around what is driving the increase in the Western Cape. It could be issues of targeting, maybe we're not targeting in a way that reaches the vulnerable."

Approximately 7.9 million South Africans were living with HIV when the study was conducted.

#Workplace Tips: Here are some unwanted habits that can ruin your reputation at work. #MandelaDay

More often than not, we develop bad workplace habits. And while you may not realise it, your boss or your colleagues might have formed a less-than-perfect impression of your work ethic and professionalism.

HR specialist Hope Lukoto brings your attention to some of the workplace habits you need to be aware of.

Constantly on your cellphone
With the unceasing activity on our social media profiles, it's likely that many of us (more than most would admit) spend a lot of time looking at our cellphone screens.

"This makes you look unprofessional and gives the impression that you are not getting any work done," Lukoto says.

Your energy
Lukoto explains that your energy levels at work, whether you're a hard worker or not, has a huge impact on how your colleagues and boss perceive your work ethic.

"Walking slowly, talking slowly and the sort give the impression of laziness," Lukoto says. "Low energy makes people wonder whether you're getting any work done."

Long lunch breaks
Lukoto explains that you need to be conscious of your daily work breaks, saying that consistent long work breaks create the impression that you're not doing enough work.

Tardiness
"Being late is a very big one," she says. "It almost always sets off alarm bells. So even before your manager asks the 'Can they do the job?' question, they may be asking the 'Should they be working here?' question."

Chewing gum in a meeting
Lukoto says that while chewing gum at your desk might not necessarily give off a bad impression, continuing to chew gum when you get into a meeting is problematic.

"It makes one seem distracted in a meeting, and will make people wonder whether you're listening. It gives the impression that you're not present," she explains.

Email language
How you write an email is a very important part of what forms a professional image. Lukoto says that however innocent or quick your email may be, it's important to always write it out in full words and full sentences.

"You never know where your email might go and who's going to read it, because tomorrow one might have to forward it here, then forward it there, and the other people that have access to the email trail might start to question your professionalism."

Be at your desk
"It depends on the type of boss you have, but a lot of managers want to see you at your desk, because if you're not, they assume work isn't being done," Lukoto says.

#BarackObama blasts lying politicians #Mandela100

Barack Obama did not mince his words during his keynote address at the 16th annual Nelson Mandela Lecture.

The former US president used the opportunity to lambast politicians who lie, calling out the "utter loss of shame" among politicians who "just make stuff up".

"We see it in the growth of state-sponsored propaganda. We see it in internet fabrications. We see it in the blurring of lines between news and entertainment.

"We see the utter loss of shame among political leaders where they're caught in a lie and they just double down and lie some more," he told the 15 000-strong crowd at Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg on Tuesday.

If you drink be alarmed, #alcohol related deaths are on the increase in #Mzansi

According to a study entitled TheSocioeconomic Profile of Alcohol-attributable Mortality in South Africa, globally, illness and life expectancy follow a social gradient that puts people of lower socio-economic status (SES) at higher risk of dying prematurely.

Alcohol consumption has been shown to be a factor contributing to socio-economic differences in mortality.

The research study, published by BMC Medicine, sought to quantify mortality attributable to alcohol consumption in individuals 15 years and older from the general population of South Africa in 2015 by SES, age and gender.

The study has shown that one in 10 deaths in the country can be attributed to alcohol abuse, with men in low-income groups the most at risk.

"Overall, approximately 62 300 adults died from alcohol-attributable causes of death in South Africa in 2015. With a total of approximately 529 400 deaths from all causes in 2015, roughly one in 10 deaths were attributable to alcohol use," the study finds.

The research paper indicated that South Africa has a large drinking population, with almost half of all adults being current drinkers, although the majority still abstains. It shows that men are bigger drinkers by a wide margin, across all socio-economic levels.

There are a number of high-income drinkers, but the middle- and lower-income groups drink the most and abuse alcohol the most. Data revealed similar indications with women, but at a much lower rate. When looking at mortality rate, it shows that those in the lower socio-economic levels are succumbing to alcohol-related deaths.

"Roughly 60% of all alcohol-attributable deaths occurred in the low socio-economic group. About one-quarter occurred in the middle group and roughly 15% in the high SES group.

"In the higher socio-economic group, deaths due to chronic diseases constituted the largest subcategory of alcohol-attributable deaths. In the middle-income group, chronic and infectious diseases contributed approximately the same number of deaths.

"In the low-income group, the majority of the alcohol-attributable deaths occurred due to infectious diseases."

The research revealed that the number of people dying from alcohol-related causes is much higher than the previous estimate of 7% in 2010.

President Ramaphosa wants #MandelaDay to be dedicated to the needy

President Cyril Ramaphosa has urged South Africans to dedicate their time, energy, and resources to improving the lives of the less fortunate in honour of the country's first democratic statesman and anti-apartheid icon, Nelson Mandela.

Nelson Mandela International Day is an annual international day in honour of the global icon, celebrated each year on July 18, his birthday.

This year, the day has added significance as it would have been the 100th birthday of Mandela, who died in 2013.

In a pre-recorded message, Ramaphosa said that people across the world would celebrate a man whose extraordinary contribution to the cause of freedom continues to inspire millions in the struggle for peace, justice and equality.

"On this day, let us go out in our millions to make a meaningful and lasting difference in our society. Let us also dedicate our time, energy and whatever resources we have in improving the lives of those in need," Ramaphosa said.

Ramaphosa said this year's Mandela Day should mark the start of a new era of of citizen activism for social change and economic change in line with the "Renewing the Mandela Legacy and Promoting Active Citizenship in a Changing World".

#BarackObama gathers 200 young African leaders for five-day summit in #Johannesburg. #MandelaLecture

The Obama Foundation on Saturday began its five-day gathering in Johannesburg of 200 young leaders from 44 countries across Africa as part of a one-year leadership development and civic engagement programme.

The foundation said the programme was designed to train, support, and connect emerging African leaders working to create positive change and explore new ways to tackle the biggest problems in their communities.

The gathering will see speakers from public, private, and non-profit sectors, including billionaire philanthropist Aliko Dangote, former Liberian president Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, former United Nations secretary general Kofi Annan, former South African public protector Thuli Madonsela, former president Nelson Mandela's widow Graca Machel, and many others.

This as former US president Barack Obama travels to South Africa this week to deliver the 16th Nelson Mandela annual lecture in Johannesburg on Tuesday to mark the 100th anniversary of Mandela's birth. Obama will also visit his ancestral home in Kenya. The 16th Nelson Mandela annual lecture will be delivered under the theme "Renewing the Mandela legacy and promoting active citizenship in a changing world".

In an official statement, Obama said he would talk about how citizens could create the conditions to bridge divides, make changes across ideological lines, and work together to "resist oppression and inequality".

The visit takes place despite lobby groups, such as CAGE Africa and Palestine Solidarity Alliance, calling on the Nelson Mandela Foundation to "uninvite" Obama after he was announced as the guest speaker for the lecture last month, claiming Obama's principles were "contrary" to Mandela's.

Obama issued a short list of books that he recommended for summer reading, including some of Africa's best writers and thinkers. The list included Chinua Achebe's "Things Fall Apart", "A Grain of Wheat" by Ngugi wa Thiong'o, and Mandela's "Long Walk To Freedom". Obama said he wanted to share the books list as he drew inspiration from the authors and their books.

"Over the years since, I've often drawn inspiration from Africa's extraordinary literary tradition. As I prepare for this trip, I wanted to share a list of books that I'd recommend for summer reading, including some from a number of Africa's best writers and thinkers – each of whom illuminate our world in powerful and unique ways," Obama said.

A new coach, #KhamaBilliat and a new jersey - #KaizerChiefs dream big this season

Kaizer Chiefs unveiled a new coach in Giovanni Solinas last Friday, and today, they unveiled their new kit for the 2018/19 season!

It's been a heady few days for the Amakhosi as Solinas was announced as the replacement for Steve Komphela.

Then they won the Maize Cup on Saturday at the James Motlatsi Stadium in Orkney by beating Buya Msuthu and Free State Stars.

And now Chiefs will play in their new kit on Saturday when they take on Mamelodi Sundowns in the Shell Helix Ultra Cup at the FNB Stadium.

The gold jersey has bold diagonal black stripes across the front, which the club says is "representing traditional spears rising together to create a sense of motion and unity on the field".

The away kit is a bold purple, which is "paying homage to African royalty – strong and unbreakable, like the new team", with black shorts and purple socks.

The new jerseys feature Nike's DRI-FIT technology, which assists with ventilation, while Nike's ground-breaking polyester is a lightweight fabric.

The range of Chiefs kit also includes a training jersey and tracksuit, as well as a female jersey.

"Our long-standing partnership with Nike has produced many distinctive kit designs that have become part of our history, and this year is no different," Chiefs marketing director Jessica Motaung said.

"With the world celebrating 'Madiba' this month in the centenary year of Tata's birth, we are sure that the former statesman would have been proud of the jersey as he's always loved our jerseys, including the one he wore in 2002.

"Just as it is with every jersey, the stylish, fashionable design is augmented by advancements in the fabric technology to give the garment a more comfortable feel and enable players to perform better on the pitch.

"We are once again thankful to Nike for another iconic home and away jersey.

"It is important to recognise our ladies and the role they play in supporting the team, and having a special design for them is important to us."

The new kit will be available from the nine Kaizer Chiefs retail stores, as well as online at kcdigistore.com and at Nike.com on Monday July 16, and major retailers from Monday July 23.

The nominees were announced at a press lunch at The Goliath Comedy Club on Wednesday but we'll have to wait to see who'll leave with the Waldo at the main awards event on 8 September at The Lyric Theatre.
