Is online trading the key to riches in #Mzansi's economy?

Online trading for new and second-hand goods is on a constant up curve.

Online trading platform Gumtree has seen a massive increase in the past year and now carries more than one million listings.

Head of Core Business at Gumtree South Africa Claire Cobbledick believes when South Africa finally sheds itself of the data cost choke chain, growth in online trading will become explosive across the board.

"This already massive online trading economy is important and is under-estimated on formal analysis in several significant ways," she says.

The thriving trade in second-hand goods is a result of the search for value by consumers in the tough economic climate and, in many instances, it displaces retail sales.

"Car sales are a classic example of this. Last year, we estimate that previously-owned cars outsold new ones in South Africa by two to one yet almost all the sales data and awards shows and industry analysis focusses on the new metal on the showroom floors," says Cobbledick.

Car dealers seem to have adjusted to this shift and now operate cleverly and flexible in the previously-owned online space.

She says South Africans are only just beginning to appreciate how much potential value they have locked up in unused or unwanted goods.

"An Australian survey found that families could add 6% to their total household income by selling their unused goods online. And we estimate there's more than R1 billion lying around in South African homes in unused, good condition.

"Most importantly, the online space is the protagonist of a new economy in which anyone can become a retailer on their own terms. This phenomenon is in line with global trends and it could play a huge part in alleviating South Africa's massive unemployment problem," says Cobbledick.

How to launch your business on a shoe string budget and your #Smartphone

Smartphones have become so common in many parts of the world that we forget their significance at times. It is perhaps one of the greatest gifts to an entrepreneur looking to launch a business on little to no seed capital. If its functionalities are maximised, it's not far-fetched that one could launch and run a business from it successfully.

"Now more than any other time in history, starting and running a business can be done with little to no seed funding. The digital age offers entrepreneurs the ability to launch and grow a business using a set of online platforms and tools that can be installed or accessed on your smartphone," says Jesse Weinberg, Head of the SME segment at FNB Business.

Weinberg gives us an idea of how one could go about using a smartphone to launch a start-up at little to no cost.

Business registration & certification – Entrepreneurs can register their businesses and apply for a business account on a bank's website. CIPC registration through a bank was launched by FNB in partnership with the DTI in 2012; it is now available through all major banks in South Africa at a minimal fee. This includes the creation of a company with the registrar of companies (CIPC) on your behalf.

Reserve a web domain and email address – One of the best ways to professionalise your business image from the start is to have a business website and business email address - it says that you are serious. Registering a web domain address is relatively cheap and easy through companies such aswww.godaddy.com andwww.Afrihost.co.za which also offer you the ability to setup an email account and even a website.

Cloud and App-based accounting software– With so many companies offering various software tools and solutions, it has never been easier to get yourself up and running so you can start invoicing and balancing your books right away. Many banks now even offer business customers accounting software as part of their value-added offering. FNB offers their Instant Accounting Solutions suite for free which enables business customers to import and reconcile their bank account transactions immediately, invoice clients and even issue payslips to employees.

Social Media – Never before has it been easier for a small business owner to compete with larger businesses in the digital marketing arena by creating and managing multiple digital campaigns right from their own smartphone. With mature social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, there are a whole bouquet of tools available to create, track and monitor campaigns with incredible precision. What's more is most of these platforms now even enable you to sell your products and services directly on their platforms.

Cloud services – By definition, this is any software service that is available to its users via the internet or "the cloud" on demand. Cloud services cut costsbecause the business doesn't need to own its own physical servers, meaning no direct technology costs of owning servers or physical storage. For example an entrepreneur can access web-based productivity software such as Microsoft Office 365 or Google Docs, or they can file and store all their documents online in the cloud and have access to them from anywhere with the likes of Dropbox, iCloud and OneDrive.

Website builders – The idea that a website has to cost a fortune isn't true; one can launch their own website online using an online website builder platform offered by many providers. Most platforms offer pre-created themes and templates either for free or at a minimal cost. You can personalise a theme to suit your business aesthetics, image and needs, when you are happy with it, you can simply launch it under your web domain URL. Most of these platforms offer plug-ins that are built for ecommerce, meaning you can link it to your account and sell online. Examples include www.Shopify.com andwww.Wix.com.

"These platforms and tools, when used effectively, can empower you to take your product or service from an idea, to a huge online audience. The best part of it all is that these are easy platforms to master right from your smartphone. An entrepreneur can also use the analytics tools built into most of these platforms to get deep insights into who their customers are, allowing the entrepreneur an opportunity to improve and grow the quality of their offering. It's a new digital business world out there, and by embracing the power of your smartphone, you can take full advantage of it." Weinberg.

Making cleaning greener and smarter #GreenWorx

For the last decade, South Africa has been on an educational journey, as the market began to embrace greener living, cleaner results and smarter practices. The planet is finite, and its resources are limited. In legal terms, there's a saying that "ignorance of the law is no excuse" – the time has come where ignorance of our effect on the planet could be our own downfall. This is why the best time to be an #ecowarrior is now.

Many of the chemicals in traditional domestic and commercial cleaning products cause harm to the environment and the people exposed to them. These harmful chemical products contain surfactants that are not biodegradable, emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and endanger both human and environmental health.

In the last quarter of 2017, Green Worx Cleaning Solutions launched its online store, offering consumers the opportunity to purchase truly green, enzymatic cleaning products in a few easy steps. The manufacturer previously focused on the industrial market, but recognised the need for an effective, environmentally friendly solution backed by real accreditations and a decade of experience.

According to John J Coetzee, CEO at Green Worx, the company's mission is to live the philosophy of "bio-excellence", using innovation to provide solutions that will improve the quality, performance and safety of products, with a constant focus on its environmental impact and meeting consumer needs. "Our vision is to provide biotech solutions, finding better ways to get things clean. Our focus is our strength, striving daily to find the right balance between compassion and competitiveness."

In their natural environment, bacteria produce hundreds of enzymes in response to the organics present in their environment. They produce extracellular enzymes that break down proteins, starches, fats, oils, greases, urine, esters and toilet tissue into smaller particles outside the bacterial cell. The bacteria then transport the smaller particles across their cell membrane for use as an energy source and for building of new cellular components. Since bacteria detect the organics present as potential food and produce specific enzymes to breakdown these organics, it is a very efficient system.

"Enzyme-based cleaners are especially useful for biofilm removal (this is a hood that bad bacteria hide under, which chemical cleaners can't penetrate)," adds Coetzee. "Bacteria are somewhat difficult to remove with traditional alkaline or acid cleaners. Enzyme cleaners are more effective on biofilms since they work as proteases by breaking down proteins. After washing, the biodegradable surfactants and enzymes will break down and can safely be absorbed back into nature.

Morne Morkel to call it a day #ProteaFire

Standard Bank Proteas fast bowler, Morne Morkel, has announced he will retire from all forms of international cricket at the conclusion of the four-match Sunfoil Test series against Australia starting in Durban on Thursday.

The 33-year-old has played 83 Tests, 117 One-Day Internationals and 44 T20 Internationals in a successful career spanning 12 years. He has taken 294 Test wickets - including seven five-fors - and is currently the fifth highest all-time wicket-taker for South Africa in Test matches. He has an impressive tally of 529 wickets across the three formats.

Explaining his decision, Morkel said: "It was an extremely tough decision but I feel the time is right to start a new chapter. I have a young family and a foreign wife, and the current demanding international schedule has put a lot of strain us. I have to put them first and this decision will only benefit us going forward.

"I have loved every minute that I have played in the Proteas jersey, and I am incredibly grateful to my team mates, Cricket South Africa, and my family and friends for the support over the years. I still feel there is a lot of cricket left in me and I am excited for what lies ahead. For now, all of my energy and focus is on helping the Proteas win the upcoming series against Australia."

Michelle Obama's much anticipated memoir to be released in November #Becoming

Michelle Obama's memoir, one of the most highly anticipated books in recent years, is coming out Nov. 13.

The former first lady tweeted Sunday that the book, to come out a week after the 2018 midterm elections, is called "Becoming."

"Writing 'Becoming' has been a deeply personal experience," she said in a statement. "It has allowed me, for the very first time, the space to honestly reflect on the unexpected trajectory of my life. In this book, I talk about my roots and how a little girl from the South Side of Chicago found her voice and developed the strength to use it to empower others. I hope my journey inspires readers to find the courage to become whoever they aspire to be. I can't wait to share my story."

She and her husband, former President Barack Obama, last year reached a joint agreement with Penguin Random House for their respective books.

The deal is believed to be well in excess of $30 million. "Becoming" will be released in the U.S. through the Crown Publishing Group, a Penguin Random House division that has published works by both Obamas.

Memoirs by former first ladies usually sell well, with notable works including Laura Bush's "Spoken from the Heart" and Hillary Rodham Clinton's "Living History." Michelle Obama's memoir is expected to be a major commercial and cultural event.

She is admired around the world and has never told her story at length. Her only previous book was a 2012 work on gardening, "American Grown."

The book will be published simultaneously in 24 languages, from Swedish to Arabic, and Michelle Obama expects to promote "Becoming" in the U.S. and overseas. She will also narrate the audio version.

According to Crown, Obama is working with a team of assistants, but that every word in the finished text will be hers.

"As first lady of the United States of America - the first African-American to serve in that role - she helped create the most welcoming and inclusive White House in history, while also establishing herself as a powerful advocate for women and girls in the U.S. and around the world," Crown said in a statement.

"In her memoir, a work of deep reflection and mesmerizing storytelling, Michelle Obama invites readers into her world, chronicling the experiences that have shaped her-from her childhood on the South Side of Chicago to her years as an executive balancing the demands of motherhood and work, to her time spent at the world's most famous address."

Barack Obama, who has written the million-sellers "Dreams from My Father" and "The Audacity of Hope," has not yet scheduled his memoir. He is expected to focus on his eight years in the White House.

Why you should consider using a #Nokia #smartphone

Android is a name that is now synonymous with smartphones, not just in Mzansi but the world over. And this is not surprising considering the phenomenal reception of the Android Operating System over the years.

According to the Worldwide Smartphone OS market share released by IDC in Q1 2017, Android enjoyed a massive 85% of the total smartphone OS market, iOS had 14.7%, with Windows left with a paltry 0.1%.

Just like everyone likes to be associated with something great especially when it is continuously successful, several smartphone manufacturers now make low, mid and high-end smartphones running on the Android Operating System.

However, it may interest you to know that as at today, Nokia is the only major smartphones player committing to a 100% pure approach to Android. Cool right? Yeah!

Here are three reasons why you should consider one of the Nokia smartphones that run on pure, secure and up-to-date Android.

You can tailor your phone to your life.

As the name suggests, one thing about pure Android is that it is pure – Just as Google intended it. The implication of this is that your Nokia Smartphone is free from pre-installed apps and hidden processes eating up your battery life. There is a perfect match between the apps you use in your daily life and the apps on your phone. You, therefore, can tailor your phone to your life, save your battery from unneeded apps killing it in the background, increase energy, enhance memory and free up space for more of what you love.

Monthly Security Updates

Monthly security updates come as standard with Nokia Smartphones running on pure, secure and up-to-date Android. What this does is that it helps keep your phone as secure as possible.

Regular Updates of Android OS

With Nokia Smartphones, rest assured you are ahead of the game as the phones will launch on the latest version of Android. Customers get to experience Android features and innovations from Google with Nokia's regular updates.

Picture this!  You wouldn't let a stranger put a fridge in your living room, so why would you want a phone with apps you didn't ask for? As humans, we need order and we crave peace. We deserve phones that don't say you are out of storage when you take a selfie and this is exactly what you get with Nokia smartphones running on pure, secure and up-to-date Android.

#PRASA introduces #Joburg to #Musina train service

South African transport minister Joe Maswanganyi on Friday launched a new passenger train service between Johannesburg and Musina for long distance-travelers to commute directly between Gauteng and Limpopo.

At the official launch at Johannesburg Park Station, Maswanganyi said that the intention of the department of transport was to provide cheap and affordable public transport.

"Many people spend most of their income on transport, so that is the reason we are launching this service because we believe it is more affordable and safe. We are not saying that other modes of transport are not affordable," he said.

The train will be operated by Shosholoza Meyl, a division of Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa).

Maswangayi said that there will be more launches and installations of Shosholoza Meyl across South Africa and across the borders, but that did not mean taxis and buses were not recommended as they work with the train service.

He said that the outline routes -- like Johannesburg to Mafikeng and Botswana, and Johannesburg to Nelspruit and Mozambique -- will be launched as well the new route from East London to Mthatha, and Durban to East London.

The Johannesburg to Musina train will also be used by Zimbabwean customers crossing the border after alighting in Musina.

"The train will have a dining car that provides meals, tea/coffee, refreshments, TV screens, Wi-Fi access, showers, a dining hall, and also charging facilities enabled to attract more youth," Maswanganyi said.

Get beautiful skin at any age #BeautyTips

We're all looking to achieve that coveted summer glow, but the older we get, the harder it is for us to find products that best suit our skin, let alone give us the radiance we're looking for. What products should you be using to get your skin luminescent and looking beautiful at any age?

Your 20s

Youth brings with it a lot of advantages – mainly your skin's elasticity and ability to heal itself. With so little to correct, getting glowing skin in your 20s is as easy as exfoliating and masking for the perfect glow. Exfoliate to buff away any dead skin cells on your face so your skin's natural glow can shine through. However, keep in mind that you should not exfoliate your skin more than three times a week. For an instant skin boost (perfect for date night), apply a face mask that will help even out your skin tone and remove impurities.

Recommendation:

L'Oréal Pure Clay Bright Mask, R160

Your 30s

Your skin looking a little dull and tired? Your 30s are some of your best years, so your skin should look as radiant as you feel. Maintaining the elasticity in your skin while protecting it is a must at this pivotal age, as this is when the early signs of ageing will begin to reveal themselves. The best product that will last throughout the day is a moisturiser with anti-aging properties and an SPF to firm your skin ,while also shielding it from harmful UVA and UVB rays.

Recommendation:

L'Oréal Revitalift Laser Renew SPF 20, R260

Your 40s and upwards

Once you've gone beyond the prime years of your life, good skincare requires a little extra vigilance. Your routine should also include products that impact your skin's health even while you sleep. Using products that contain glycolic acid, which gently exfoliates the skin while you sleep, will leave your skin more receptive to the active ingredients in your overnight skincare products, allowing them to penetrate deeper and work better. Adding a brightening anti-wrinkle treatment to your night-time skin care cocktail will also help diminish fine lines (practically overnight) and tighten your skin.

Recommendation:

L'Oréal Revitalift Bright Reveal Brightening Dual Overnight Moisturiser, R400

How to ace your next job interview

Here are six strategies that will take your interviewing experience to the next level.

Establish the right mindset beforehand

According to Steve Errey of the Daily Muse, if you're nervous, don't assume your interviewer is there to be judgemental and mean. The hiring person is not your opponent, but he/she is hoping to be impressed. So get yourself hyped for the interview.

This can be pretty difficult for some, especially if you've got a lot on the line. Try taking some deep breaths. A good trick for maintaining a sense of calm is visualising your success and accepting that rejection's a possibility, but not an inevitability.

Prepare some good questions

Asking good questions that demonstrate your knowledge and interest in the job is exactly what you have to do in order to demonstrate your engagement. It's often impossible for people to think up informed questions on the spot, so write some down beforehand. Rehearse them a bit, if that makes you feel more comfortable.

Do your homework when it comes to money

Money is usually an awkward subject to begin with, which makes it especially easy to bungle in a job interview. Doing your homework is key to avoiding salary-related awkwardness in your conversation with the hiring person. Know your worth. Know the market.

Stick to your thesis

If you are anxious or speaking with an experienced interviewer, it can be easy to diverge from your interview. You might end up failing to demonstrate the value you can bring to the organisation.

Make sure to always keep the focus on what you can do for the organisation. Treat your interview a bit like an essay. Everything you discuss should pertain to one thesis.

Pretend as if you're about to start work tomorrow

Do you want to nail that job interview? Pretend that you already have the job. It's a bit of extra effort, but it can really put you far ahead of the competition.

Ask about the next steps

If you are particularly nervous or new to the hiring process, it can feel a bit daunting to ask about the next steps. Still, asking about the follow-up process demonstrate to the hiring manager that you're realistic and serious about the job.

Government allocates R57 billion for tertiary education #Budget2018

Government has allocated R57 billion into higher education for the next three years to foot the bill for the funding of free free higher education

Finance minister Malusi Gigaba tabled the budget in parliament on Thursday afternoon, where he announced R1.67 trillion expenditure for the financial year.

Gigaba said consolidated spending in the medium term would increase to R1.94 trillion, representing a nominal annual average growth of 7.6 per cent, or 2.1 per cent in real terms.

The Department of Higher Education and Training received the largest reallocation of resources towards government's priorities, Gigaba said.

"As a result, this is the fastest-growing spending category, with an annual average growth of 13.7 per cent.

"Accordingly, this government is proud to implement a major step forward towards our ultimate

goal of guaranteeing access to higher education and training for all South Africans who qualify based on merit, not class position," he said.

Last year, former president Jacob Zuma announced that government would provide free higher education for students from poor and working class households, which Gigaba said will be phased in from this year.

"This means that all new first-year students with a family income below R350 000 per annum at universities and TVET colleges in the 2018 academic year will be funded for the full cost of study.

"This will be rolled out in subsequent years until all years of study are covered. Returning National Student Financial Aid Scheme students at university will have their loans for 2018 onwards converted to a bursary," he said.

The allocations are expected to increase the number of students supported by the scheme from 230 469 this year to 1 123 212 students in the next three years.

#NationalBudget2018 - what to expect

The South African economy has experienced undue economic pressure and decreasing investor confidence. Pressure wasundoubtedly on the South African National Treasury to take active steps to address short-comings and enable growth within the local economy.

"The anticipation of 2018/2019 Annual Budget Speech is growing; with the hope that it will bring improvement in the economy, address key challenges and create tangible solutions for consumers and businesses alike," says Hugo van Zyl: FNB Fiduciary Specialist.

With the upcoming Budget Speech on the 21st of February; we looked to the past year and highlight a few key financial key points that may still affect consumers this year:

Personal Income Tax

In 2017, minor adjustments were made to this tax bracket last year; with 45% for taxable income above R1.5 million being introduced. This increase in taxes payable for income earners above the R1.5 million income thresholds saw significant pressure on tax payers having to manage an existing budget with lower disposable income.

We foresee that the Personal income tax rate will remain the same for this financial year.  With this in mind we encourage tax payers to avoid incurring unnecessary debt and ensure that one's debt to income ratio is minimized at all costs.

Higher Education

Last year, an additional R5 billion was added to the previously announced R32 billion. Approximately 30% of South African parents save for their child's education on a yearly basis. With the cost of education rising by about 10% each year, parents are encouraged to continue making provision for their children's future. In addition, the recent funding announcement for free university education to students from poor households in South Africa will be announced in the upcoming budget together with possible tax increases.

Excise duty rates for tobacco and alcoholic products

The Sin Tax has increased previously between 6.1% and 9.1%. We anticipate this to also increase as is the case every year. We advise that consumers should consider reducing their consumption to ease budget constraints on their wallets and more importantly, improve their health.

Tax-free Savings Accounts

The annual Tax Free Savings limit increased from R30 000 to R33 000 last year. This was great news for investors and we predict that this will remain the same this year.

The financial year ends on the 28th of February 2018. South Africans still have an opportunity to take advantage of tax free savings, encompassed in the benefit of exemption from taxes like dividends tax, capital gains tax etc. The benefits will give a huge boost to your investment over time. The key to investing is to invest early, stay invested and in time you will reap the rewards, regardless of how much you invest per month.

Dividend Withholding Tax

The rate increased from 15% to 20%, which was put into effect 22 February 2017, and any dividends incurred on or after this date attracted the increased rate. We do not foresee any further change during this Budget speech.

VAT Increase

We predict a possible increase in the VAT rate as it can raise large amounts of revenue. Between 2015 and 2017, the general fuel levy increased by 30c/l. We expect an increase in the fuel levy; but the extent of the increase will depend on whether the VAT rate is increased.

Capital Gains Tax

An increase in the annual inclusion for individuals and special trusts is expected.

Investment overview

Chantal Marx; Head of research FNB Securities says that, "The MTBPS painted a very negative picture of the South African fiscus in October last year, and from an investment perspective, we will be very focused on how government plans to make up what is expected to be a significant revenue shortfall. However, the expenditure component will be equally important."

Possibilities to increase revenue:

·         Disposing of assets like government's share in Telkom.

·         Increased taxes:

o    A possible increase in VAT. If this is the case, there could however be some relief for grant recipients through higher grant increases as well as the zero rating of certain items.

o    Fiscal drag (not adjusting tax brackets to compensate for inflation).

o    A possibility of a further increase in the marginal tax rate for the highest income earners.

·         Given the stronger rand, treasury could use the opportunity to raise the fuel levy.

On the expenditure side, the line is even finer and there is very little government can do to limit the states' spending bill. The wage bill is expected to grow a little ahead of inflation and grant payments could increase to provide relief for possible VAT hikes. Capital expenditure growth is anticipated to remain negative in real terms.

We anticipate an improvement in deficit targets relative to the MTBPS on the back of revenue raising measures. This will signal a return to fiscal consolidation which is likely to be bond friendly, particularly if enough is done to avert a Moody's downgrade.

Small Business Institute welcomes #Ramaphosa's commitment to #SMEs

The Small Business Institute (SBI) on Monday welcomed President Cyril Ramaphosa's commitments to examine the role government has played in holding back South Africa's small and medium enterprises (SMEs), but called for the collapse of the Department of Small Business Development.

"After four years since the establishment of the Department of Small Business Development, with a cumulative budget in the region of R5.2 billion and a consistent year-on-year underachievement of its annual targets, there is still no coordinated effort – or evidence-based strategy – to drive government's efforts to support this vital segment of our business community," the SBI said.

"We therefore recommend that the Ministry of Small Business be collapsed into a small and effective advocacy office, positioned within the Office of the Presidency to heighten its role as champion of the small business community.  Failing that, we would suggest it be housed in the Treasury."

The SBI said that it would soon be launching the first-ever baseline study to be conducted on small, medium and micro businesses in South Africa in a bid to respond to the call to action towards growing small business, growing employment and growing the economy.

In his maiden State-of-the-Nation Address, Ramaphosa said that government would work with social partners to build a small business support ecosystem and continue to invest in small business incubation, including finalising a small business and innovation fund and reducing the regulatory barriers.

He said that the establishment through the CEOs Initiative of a small business fund – which currently stands at R1.5 billion – was an outstanding example of the role that the private sector can play.

Ramaphosa also said that government would begin begin rooting out corruption, especially in State-owned enterprises, and review the structure and size of government departments.

Not #FingerLickingGood as #KFC hit by chicken shortage

Washington - "The chicken crossed the road, just not to our restaurants."

So said an announcement Saturday that tried to find humour in KFC's chicken shortage, which has prompted the fast-food chain to temporarily close hundreds of its restaurants in the United Kingdom. KFC said the shortage was caused by "a couple of teething problems" with its new delivery partner, DHL.

"We know that this might have inconvenienced some of you over the last few days, and disappoint you when you wanted your fried chicken fix - we're really sorry about that," KFC said Saturday. "Shout out to our restaurant teams who are working flat out to get us back up and running again."

As of Monday, about 300 of KFC's 900 locations in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are open, according to a list on KFC's website. Some restaurants are operating on a limited menu or shortened hours. It remains unclear when all restaurants will be open.

DHL said that a number of its deliveries had been "incomplete or delayed" because of operational issues, CNN Money reported.

The mishap came just months after KFC partnered with DHL as part of the fast-food chain's ambition to "revolutionise" the food service distribution market in the United Kingdom. A news release from October said DHL will manage KFC's warehouse and distribution service, with a "greater focus on innovation, quality and service performance" and a promise to "provide a faster turnaround of orders."

Some customers aren't happy.

"So we're going have to hit a McDonald's up," says a customer who posted a video on YouTube showing a closed location in Manchester, England. "This is s--- mate. We like our chicken. You know we like our chicken."

Still, KFC assured its customers that "the Colonel is working on it," a lighthearted reference to the late Col. Harland Sanders, the chain's founder.

Sanders acquired a service station in the 1930s in Corbin, Kentucky, and later transformed it into a restaurant, where he cooked his signature fried chicken. He franchised Kentucky Fried Chicken in 1952 at the age of 62 and sold it for $2 million 12 years later. Sanders, whose image is featured in KFC's logo, is now known in more than 100 countries for his fried chicken recipe.

KFC is owned by Yum! Brands, a Kentucky-based company that also owns Pizza Hut and Taco Bell.

#NBA Africa game returns to #Johannesburg to honour #Mandela

Some of the NBA's biggest former and current stars, as well as the African continent's brightest entrepreneurs, musicians and influencers are set to descend on Johannesburg in August as the NBA Africa Game returns to South Africa for the third time.

NBA Africa vice president Amadou Gallo Fall announced during the NBA All Star Weekend in Los Angeles that the NBA Africa Game between Team World and Team Africa will take place on 4 August in Gauteng at a venue still to be announced.

The game will honour the centenary of the birth of former SA president Nelson Mandela and will be played in support of the Nelson Mandela Foundation.

The announcement of the NBA Africa Game returning to Johannesburg was made at a swanky luncheon at the Indigo Hotel in downtown Los Angeles moderated by CNN anchor Isha Sesay.

To give an indication of the growth and importance of NBA Africa's role to the multibillion dollar NBA organisation, the announcement was attended by NBA Commissioner Adam Silver and a host of celebrities, basketball stars and African entrepreneurs.

An indication of the kind of star power soon to descend on Johannesburg again is that the launch was attended by the likes of NBA global ambassador Dikembe Mutombo, NBA players Frank Ntilikina (New York Knicks), Emmanuel Mudiay (New York Knicks), Cheick Diallo (New Orleans Pelicans), Bismack Biyombo (Orlando Magic), actor Djimon Hounsou and singer Akon, among others.

Sesay also moderated an "Africa Now" panel discussion featuring Akon, the World Bank's vice president for Africa, Makhtar Diop, entrepreneur and Uncharted Play founder Jessica Matthews and Sundial Brands chief executive Richelieu Dennis, the Shea Moisture founder who recently bought Essence Magazine from Time Inc.

SA celebrities who attended included socialites and personalities such as Nomzamo Mbatha and Pearl Thusi, rapper Cassper Nyovest and filmmaker Akin Omotoso.

All glitz and glamour as #BlackPanther premieres in South Africa

Dressed in traditional attire and a modern twist on African chic, local and international stars dazzled on the red carpet at the official premiere at Monte Casino in Johannesburg.

An African superhero film, the movie stars Hollywood actors and actresses including Chadwick Boseman, Lupita Nyong'o and Danai Gurira and local acting legends Dr John Kani and Connie Chiume.

The film follows the journey of T'Challa, who following the death of his father, the King of Wakanda, returns to the isolated, technologically advanced African country to take up his rightful place as king.

Audiences at the premiere cheered as the opening scene introduced the first of many dialogues in isiXhosa, and later as the spellbinding special effects – including war-ready rhinos and spiky space ships powered by electric blue flashes – filled the screen.

Is it possible to breakup with your #smartphone

Maya Oren wants to dial back her dependence on her smartphone. She plans to do it slowly by getting a new phone - a simple one that doesn't download apps or take photos or send her notifications. Her new device will place calls and receive them.

But the 27-year-old Washington, DC, entrepreneur isn't planning to entirely ditch her iPhone to which she has an increasingly dysfunctional relationship.

"I wake up in the morning and my heart is racing out of my chest," she says. "I'm checking Instagram. How many new followers did I get? How many people did I lose? What am I going to post today?"

Oren's new phone won't have its own number - it will simply accept calls forwarded from her iPhone, so she can attempt, on occasion, to step away from the shiny, buzzing rectangle that has come to feel like an ever-present taskmaster.

That's right - she's thinking of buying a new phone so she can try to spend less time with her old one.

You got a better idea?

The past few months have brought an escalating awareness of the perils that lurk in our pockets. Or, most of the time, in the viselike grip of our hands. Yogis and pastors across the country have called for digital detoxes. There's been a fresh wave of articles about how to curb our smartphone addictions. And a small parade of former tech executives have come forward to raise alarms that their innovations are, perhaps, just a teensy-weensy bit evil and could be a destructive force acting upon both our psyches and our democracy. Oops!

Anyway, here we are, in what Larry Rosen, a psychologist who studies society's relationship with technology, refers to as a "really interesting pit." He thinks we're going to sink even deeper into the abyss of smartphone obsession, though not so deep we can never escape.

But, for the moment, there's no ladder in sight. How can we use all the tools and conveniences smartphones offer without becoming ensnared by the widgets that have us - often unconsciously - staring at screens instead of our loved ones?

One by one, agitated people are trying to break the trance. Hence, Maya Oren's desire for that new gadget, called the Light Phone, marketed toward millennials with a mission statement that declares: "multitasking is a myth" and that "our phones have become our nervous habit, our invisible crutch."

Will Yoste, a 24-year-old project manager in Oxford, Mississippi, found himself feeling "phantom vibrations", so he deleted his Facebook app, which is helping a little.

Kay Rhind, a 52-year-old sales director in Silicon Valley, cuts off her home's WiFi at 11 p.m. every night and downloaded an app that allows her to shut off her three teenagers' phones remotely.

Andrew Martin, a research librarian in DC, put his little girls on a seven-day no-screen challenge. And those girls wisely insisted that Martin and his wife, Julie, put their own devices away.

"It's really made us realize how insidious the addiction to these screens in our pockets are," Martin says. "If you have more than 30 seconds without stimulation you have this twitch to reach for your cellphone."

Tony Fadell, a former Apple executive who helped invent the iPod, wants to make one thing clear: "The devices themselves are not addictive," he says. "That's like saying a refrigerator is addictive. No, it's the food inside them. The devices are not addictive, but the things they deliver can be addictive." (See: Twitter, Candy Crush, Snapchat, Netflix shows.)

Fadell's oldest son was born a few weeks before the introduction of the iPhone. Fadell saw what happened when he took devices away from his kids - "They would get really anxious and upset," and he noticed that adults had a fairly similar reaction. His family started "screen-free Sundays" and banned smartphone use in the morning. But that didn't feel like enough.

So Fadell has become vocal in calling for tech companies such as Apple to give people new mechanisms to control their smartphone usage. If a phone can count our steps, can't it count our minutes on social media? And eliminate notifications?

"What we're asking for is not much," he says. "It's just helpful. And it's 10 times easier than self-driving cars."

Tristan Harris, a Google alum who runs an organization called Time Well Spent has likened cellphones to portable slot machines. We carry them around and swipe the screen looking for a win - a few new "likes," a crucial email, an interesting news story. Sometimes we get a dopamine-releasing hit, sometimes we don't, but that's what keeps us coming back. To make money, social media companies need to grab and hold our attention as frequently as possible. And the more we swipe, the more we want to swipe.

Also, we can't leave the casino - because it's in our pockets. Or at least, it seems that way. Andrew Martin considered getting rid of his smartphone. "But we can't just go cold turkey," he says. "We rely on them too much for legitimate, logistical stuff like navigating." What would be required if you wanted to revert to a flip phone? A camera, a paper calendar and address book? Online dating would not be as easy as swiping right, and there would be no easy access to work emails in your off hours.

Rosen, the psychologist, thinks it's not just entertainment and utility that pulls us to constantly check our phones. It's obligation.

"If you text me and I don't text you right back you start thinking things like, 'Is he mad at me?' We never think, 'He's busy,' " Rosen says. This is why he believes trying to quit for a while doesn't do much good. "When you emerge from your time of detox the situation is more bleak. Instead of having a few email messages, you've now got thousands."

One of Rosen's colleagues found that smartphone alerts can become a source of anxiety. Next time a text message alert sounds, try to resist looking at it for as long as you can and notice how your body feels.

Rosen, co-author of "The Distracted Mind: Ancient Brains in a High-Tech World," is appreciative that some companies are starting to help consumers crawl out of the hole of obsession. He points to Apple's "Night Shift" option, a setting that schedules phones to emit less blue light, which can cause people to stay awake.

Other tools are emerging in the form of apps such as Checky and Onward, which allow consumers to track their phone usage.

Has Rosen's research allowed him to escape the clutches of digital compulsion?

"No. NO!" he exclaims. "I know I'm using it upwards of four or five hours a day. I am equally culpable."

Article after article about smartphone addiction offer similar advice on how to cut back: Don't use your phone an hour before bed, don't charge it in your bedroom, don't check it first thing in the morning and delete social media apps.

Yes! All good advice that would totally work except they rely on self-control, which we have proved not to have in this domain.

"If you walk out your front door and throw a dart, any of us are addicts. The genie is out of the bottle," says Rhind, the technology sales executive. "If everybody is an addict, no one will tell you it's an addiction. They'll say 'it's a necessity in life.'"

That's exactly what she says, when she turns off her teenagers' phones using the app OurPact but continues to use her own, because "it's for work."

"I'm justifying myself," she admits.

So are smartphones the cigarettes of our era? Are they an addiction we intuitively know is unhealthy - even without the confirmation of hard evidence - but continue because, well, everyone's doing it?

Maya Oren thinks so. Oren generates digital marketing content for a living, and she's grateful for the online connections her smartphone has wrought, even as she grapples with its hold on her attention.

So, she's taking baby steps. She bought an old-school alarm clock and has tried, with mixed success, to wake up to that instead of her cellphone. And, when she's walking around, she tries to keep her phone in her bag rather than in the palm of her hand. Baby steps - but it's a start.

"I hope as a society we would take this collective breath," she says. "Take a step back and use our phones more as the utility they were meant to be - rather than as this appendage of our bodies."

#Chivas partners with Nhlanhla Nciza to mentor upcoming #musicians

Musician Nhlanhla Nciza is set to work with and mentor Palesa Moakwe and Palesa
Manne, who are known by 2PM with a financial backing from Chivas Regal

The singer has produced a song with the two female DJs.

“I discovered 2PM on social media. We are actually from the same township in Kagiso. They tagged me in everything they did. I thought they are hard workers and hustler because they never stopped tagging me and I thought they really had talent,” she says.

She says as a musician and entrepreneur, upcoming and start-up musicians need to work hard and refrain from giving up in order to flourish in the music industry.

“Not giving up and working hard. Young artists also need a financial backing to build their brands,” she says.

Nciza has been in the music industry for the past 20 years. She recalls that when she started somebody gave her a chance to showcase her talent and she wants to do the same.

“I am passionate about young people and supporting young talent. One of the main reasons I wanted to do this was because I wanted to give them the support and the opportunity given to me years ago,” she says. She says that South African music industry lacked financial assistance and is no longer about producing a song but building a brand which involves financial support to take it to the next step.

“There are people out there who want to help and have opened doors to young artists. Everything, however, boils down to the finance. You can have a song, but if you don’t have the means to support it then it becomes fruitless,” she says.

She believes that regardless of these challenges, however, established artists in the music industry can do their bit to help.

“I felt there were not enough record companies owned by women. We also need more corporates like Chivas Regal backing young talent.”

Chivas Regal has a long-standing history of sharing success. Through mentorship and a curated financial contribution, the brand partners will continue to share their success by inspiring a new generation, while making a positive impact on the lives of others.

The whisky producer announced towards the end of last year that it has partnered with musician Nciza, along with football legend Lucas Radebe and fashion designer Laduma Ngxokolo, who share a common characteristic of excellence in their respective fields.

#Mining ends the year on a low

By Jason Muscat, FNB Senior Economic Analyst

December mining output surprised sharply to the downside, slowing to just 0.1% y/y, compared to 6.5% in November.

Gold production fell -12.4% y/y, cutting -2 pps off the headline number. Copper and coal production declined by -16.3% y/y and -5.5% respectively, shaving a further -1.5 pps, while PGM output contracted -1.4% y/y.

The year-on-year number was only just dragged into positive territory by continued strength in iron-ore output, which climbed 15.9% y/y, as well as higher chromium, manganese and building material volumes.

Despite a disappointing end to the year, mining finished the year 4% higher than in 2016, and is set to make a solid contribution to annual GDP.

We expect the sector to regain momentum in the first half of 2018 given strong Chinese demand, particularly for iron-ore. Commodity prices also remain supportive and we expect 2018 to deliver another year of mild growth.

Justin Gatlin to compete in South Africa for the first time #Athletix

World champion, Justin Gatlin, who owns three world sprint titles including an Olympic title, has joined the list of world class athletes who will be competing at the much-awaited Athletix Grand Prix Series in March.

Gatlin, the 2017 world 100m champion and the fifth fastest ever human being in the 100m and 200m, will line up in the men’s 150m race at Tuks Stadium (Tshwane) on Thursday March 8 in the second of the three series meetings.

He is the biggest name to compete on South African soil since Michael Johnson in 2001 and is a massive boost to South African athletics. His presence shows once again how far the sport has come and that global champions are again seeing South Africa as a top global player.

The 35-year-old has astoundingly never run a competitive 150m, so this will be a new experience for both him and for South Africans alike.

“I have obviously done 150’s in training, but have never raced over that distance before. It will be interesting to see how I do. It is also my first race of the season which adds to the excitement for me,” said Gatlin.

The USA star spoilt the retirement party of Usain Bolt in 2017 when he dipped countryman Christian Coleman and Bolt, to win his first global title since 2005, testimony to the longevity of his career.

He ascribes his ability to stay at the top to his ongoing work on his technique.  A glance at race videos of the last four years will show just how much his technique has improved, coming as close to perfection as possible.

In 2015 Gatlin set a world lead in the 100m when he broke his previous best of 9.77sec to clock 9.74sec for the win at the Diamond League in Doha on 15 May. This is also his best time ever and sits 5th on the World All Time lists. That same year he would run times of 9.75sec twice.

Gatlin was so dominant in 2015 that the only race that he was beaten in was the 100m final where his arch rival, Usain Bolt, again snuck victory from him at the World Championships. The margin of victory was a mere 1/100th of a second.  Only Bolt was able to run faster than him in the 200m in 2015.

Gatlin’s 19.57sec in Eugene on 28 June was 2/100th of second slower than Bolt’s 19.55sec. It is also the fifth fastest time ever run.

To date Gatlin has run an incredible 55 times under the 10 second barrier, a feat very few can boast of. He has also gone under 20 seconds seven times in the 200m.

“Having Justin Gatlin running in South Africa is a big coup for us,” said Aleck Skhosana, president of Athletics South Africa (ASA).

“We have such incredible depth in the sprints in South Africa. To have an athlete of Justin Gatlin’s calibre compete here against our athletes means that the world sees us as a major contender in the sprints.

“It also brings other great benefits as it inspires other aspiring sprinters and beyond. It also inspires coaches to produce the calibre of sprinters along the likes of Gatlin and Akani Simbine.”

Petrol and diesel prices drop

The price of all grades of petrol will drop by 30 cents per litre with effect from midnight on Tuesday.

Diesel (0.05 percent sulphur) will drop by 17 cents per litre, as will diesel (0.005 percent sulphur), the energy department said in a statement on Sunday.

The wholesale price of illuminating paraffin would drop by 19 cents per litre and the single maximum national retain price (SMNRP) by 26 cents per litre. The maximum LP Gas retail price would drop by 23 cents per kilogram.

The department said the main reasons for the fuel price adjustments were due to the contribution of the rand/US dollar exchange rate. The rand appreciated in January, on average, against the dollar, which led to a lower contribution to the basic fuels price,

Wayde van Niekerk challenges Sascoc

Olympic champion and world 400m record holder Wayde van Niekerk on Sunday pleaded with the SA Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc) to pick middle-distance runner Dominique Scott-Efurd for the Commonwealth Games.

“Sascoc please put @domscottrunSA (Scott-Efurd) in the Commonwealth team already please,” Van Niekerk tweeted on Sunday.

The 25-year-old Scott-Efurd was not part of the 169-member national team that was announced on January 30 by Sascoc for the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast in Australia in April.

Her performances on the track have seen Scott-Efurd hailed as the best local long-distance prospect on the track since Elana Meyer, who famously won silver at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics in the 10 000m.

Scott-Efurd smashed her own SA record – by nearly 13 seconds – for the 3 000m indoor event at the NYRR Millrose Games in New York on Saturday, when she ran eight minutes 41.18 seconds (8:41.18).

Scott-Efurd finished third in the event narrowly behind winner Aisha Praught-Leer (8:41.10) and world champion in the 3 000m steeplechase Emma Coburn (8:41.16).

Since competing at the Rio Olympics in 2016, the multiple SA record holder – in the 800m, 1 500m and 3 000m indoors – would have found her non-selection for her country baffling.

Sascoc please put@domscottrunSA in the Commonwealth team already please. 🙏🏾

— Wayde van Niekerk (@WaydeDreamer) February 4, 2018

Scott-Efurd was not selected for the World Championships last year despite meeting the IAAF qualifying standard for the event, with ASA imposing their own qualifying standards.

Now, Scott-Efurd again will not be taking part in a major global athletics event, which could force her to reconsider her future.

Although born in Cape Town, Scott-Efurd moved to the USA when she turned 18, where she studied and competed for the University of Arkansas.

She has since married American Cameron Efurd and holds dual citizenship.

Since Van Niekerk has now brought Scott-Efurd’s non-selection into the spotlight, it will indeed be intriguing to see how exactly ASA will react, if at all.
