The CANEX Prize: Elevating African Publishing and Cultural Identity. Entries now open for US$20,000 CANEX Prize for Publishing in Africa

The CANEX Book Factory, a partnership between the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) and Narrative Landscape Press, proudly announces the launch of the CANEX Prize for Publishing in Africa. This prestigious award aims to recognize and empower the vibrant literary landscape across the African continent.

Afreximbank, recognizing the significance of the creative and cultural industries, initiated the Creative Africa Nexus (CANEX) programme in 2020. Within this framework, the CANEX Book Factory seeks to promote a thriving literary culture in Africa and foster a sustainable business ecosystem in the literary sector.

The inaugural CANEX Prize will honor the publisher of the best trade book, defined as literature intended for a general audience, excluding textbooks and academic publications. The prize carries a grand value of US$20,000, while four finalists will each receive US$2,000.

To ensure a comprehensive and equitable evaluation process, submissions will be assessed based on writing, editing, and production quality. Furthermore, priority will be given to books printed and produced on the African continent, as well as those published in indigenous African languages.

The inaugural year of the prize will consider books published in the preceding two years, providing an opportunity for a wide range of African publishers to participate.

Kanayo Awani, Executive Vice President at Afreximbank, expressed the organization's commitment to fostering Africa's creative industries. "The CANEX Prize is a testament to our belief in the power of African literature to shape cultural identity and enrich communities."

Renowned author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, who will lead the CANEX workshops, emphasized the transformative impact of literary support. "CANEX embodies hope for aspiring African writers, inspiring them to pursue their dreams surrounded by like-minded individuals."

Publishers are encouraged to submit their published trade books for consideration. Submissions must be made through the CANEX Book Factory portal at https://canex.africa/canex-book-factory.

The CANEX Prize for Publishing in Africa is set to culminate in an award ceremony at the prestigious CANEX Wknd event in Algiers, Algeria, from October 16-19, 2024. This award will not only recognize literary excellence but also contribute to the growth and sustainability of the African publishing industry.
