How to do cross border like a pro

Being at the southern tip of Africa does have its challenges when travelling, but with the festive season drawing near, the ability to make cross border payments oversees doesn't need to be one of them. In a time where the world is becoming progressively interconnected and with many family members now living abroad, there is an increasing need to be aware of the options and legal implications when transferring money across borders.

Depending on your specific needs and requirements, you can choose either from the Electronic Fund Transfer option (SWIFT), the Western Union® Money Transfer Service or a more personal Bank Draft.

"Electronic transfers are the securest and most reliable for money transfer, however it is still important to be vigilant when making cross border payments," says Daniel Buntman, head of Absa Retail International Banking.

Benefits of electronic transfers include:

It is a risk-free and secure form of payment
Easier/faster than a bank draft (should time be critical)
You are able to stipulate the exact date of payment
Convenient and fast
Funds received are available immediately

However when it comes to security, Buntman stresses the need to continually monitor your account.  "Cybercrime remains a concern, no matter the form of transfer that you decide to use, the necessary precautions and security checks must be taken when providing your banking details in order to complete the transaction."

"Always be observant as to the amounts that are being withdrawn from your account.  If you are suspicious of a withdrawal or transaction, contact your branch immediately."

It is also important to note that there are rules and regulations to the amounts that can enter and leave the country, so make sure you read about South Africa's Exchange Control rules and regulations or ask your friendly international banking expert at your nearest Absa branch for advice.

Mmatema Moremi to play Miriam Makeba on stage #Manhattans #SowetoTheatre

She did not win Idols SA last year, but former Idols runner-up Mmatema Moremi has not allowed that to deter her from pursuing her lifelong dream of a career in the entertainment industry.

She will star in an upcoming theatre production based on the life and times of the late great singer Miriam Makeba and The Manhattans.

The production will run from 9 December at the Soweto Theatre and, speaking at the launch, Mmatema said she is honoured to have been offered the role.

"I had to do a lot of research on her and I'm currently reading a book she wrote, My Story, and I'm also learning the deep IsiZulu accent in which she spoke," she said.

While Mmatema admits singing is her first love, she says she's always had a keen interest in pursuing a career in show business, particularly acting. "What I remember about Miriam is her soul and that she was a fighter. According to the book I'm reading, she never allowed rumours to stop her from doing what she loved – she was a strong woman," she said.

Mmatema adds that when she was offered the role, she simply couldn't resist portraying the icon's life.  The star says she's pursuing acting full-time and will feature in SABC2's upcoming drama series in a lead role, but remains tight-lipped on details about her character and the name of the drama.

"For now all I can say is that the drama will hit the small screen in February next year and I play the lead role," she offered.

African Bank makes steady recovery

African Bank Chief Executive Brian Riley reports that the institution is making meaningful progress, despite recording a R1.7-billion loss in September.

Riley said he was encouraged by the figures recorded during the transitional period, as the bank continues with its recovery. African Bank has been through curatorship and considerable restructuring and the consensus appears to be that the outlook is promising.

"We believe our first six months of existence evidences significant improvement in all aspects of the business, while setting a good foundation for the transparent reporting and business transformation that will be essential to our success," Riley told IOL on Wednesday.

"The foundation for success is being set. What we have achieved so far in a short period of time gives me confidence that we will deliver on our strategy to the benefit of all our stakeholders," added Riley.

African Bank recorded an operating profit of R335-million during the six month period in question, which was better than the initial forecasts. Indications are that the liquidity is good too.

Management is under no illusions about the enormity of the task that lies ahead but there is tremendous confidence that those challenges can now be overcome.

How to fund your tertiary studies

The #Feesmustfall movement garnered a lot of publicity in recent months. While some inroads have been made, students still have to pay for tertiary education. Private banker and professional speaker Samke Mhlongo-Ngwenya says that while securing sufficient funding may be difficult, there are options you could consider.

Funding option 1: Company scholarship

For a long time, company scholarships have been the go-to tertiary funding option for many disadvantaged South Africans, especially during the apartheid era. One of the benefits of this option is that company scholarships usually have a work-back period, which provides guaranteed employment upon the completion of your studies.

"Sadly this option has become more difficult to secure due to increased competition as there are more matriculants qualifying for university entrance," says Mhlongo-Ngwenya. "In addition, there tend to be more scholarships available in fields such as accounting and engineering, for instance, and less in the humanities."

Funding option 2: Take a gap year and save

A working gap year, whether in South Africa or abroad, allows you to earn some money that can be directed towards funding your tertiary education. Furthermore, additional work experience may be an added advantage when competing for job opportunities later.

The downside is that students who opt to take a gap year will be a year or two older than other graduates upon completion of their studies. However, this is becoming less of an issue for potential employers. Another restriction to consider is that it is unlikely that you can generate enough money in 12 to 24 months to fully fund a diploma or degree, but saving money while working before going to university will ease the financial burden.

Funding option 3: Take out a student loan

A student loan is a reasonably accessible funding option but it comes with the burden of debt.

"Many student loans are only repayable after the student has spent a minimum period in employment, which gives the false illusion that they are easily manageable," says Mhlongo-Ngwenya. "Not many people realise that interest on the student loan accrues from the day in which the funds are dispersed, thus ballooning the total repayable figure relative to the initial loan amount."

She says that the advantage of this option is that it affords many more people the opportunity to fund their tertiary education, thus improving their employment prospects.

Funding option 4: Work full time and study part time

Many students in developed economies choose to work straight after high school in order to fund their tertiary studies. This suggestion may not be easily implementable in South Africa where we are facing an estimated 27% national unemployment rate and over 50% youth unemployment rate.

However, if it is possible to secure employment that generates enough income to fund your tertiary education, there are two main benefits: You will not have a huge debt balance at the onset of your working career and you will have years of work experience that other graduates may not, thus adding to your marketability.
